Cozy atmosphere! Nice German vibes
FANTASTIC! VERY nice people that aim to please a very pleasant environment you'll feel right at home coffee is fresh as every thnig else they make it right in front of you also they are NOT slow. you can also bring your family they don't even care if your a sea monster....Cheers!
This German bakery is always packed at lunchtime. They offer many breads, pretzels, sandwiches, desserts and two daily soups. You can phone in an order and have the bread waiting for you when you arrive. They're only open until about 5 pm at the St. Mary's location on weekdays and are closed on Sundays.
The German breakfast (coffee, two crusty buns with jam and butter, cheese and ham) is my mother's favourite and I get the crusty or seed bun sandwich. They will make a vegetarian version and I'm happy that they've been offered to add an extra piece of cheese to replace the meat since they're the same price. The sandwich is a bit light but you can also add the soup to it. The pretzels are quite tasty as well. I've tried a few of the desserts but none really stood out to me.
One of the best place to enjoy fresh bake breads and goodies. I love their hazelnut twirls and the witch pretzels. They also serve coffee with ample seats at this location. Quite busy but service was fast and friendly. Be back.
Crusty Bun is amazing, they use spelt flower and no preservatives in their Bread. Just like a good European bakery. Love the pumpkin seed buns and the Crusty bun. The desserts their are fantastic, all homemade products. Homemade soups are excellent! The BEST bakery in Winnipeg
Crusty Bun is an European bakery located 5 mins from the St Vital Mall. They have a wide selection of pastries. I absolutely love that there is a seating area in the bakery so customers can have their order fresh there!
Below are a few items I've had and my thoughts to them:
- Bee-sting Cake: This is a German dessert that is made of a sweet yeast dough topped with caramelized almonds. It is filled with a vanilla custard and buttercream. It was good but it was too sweet IMO.
- Ham & Cheese Pretzel: Excellent! This is my favourite pretzel ever!!!! Make sure you get there early if you plan to get one because they are sold out quick! Highly recommended!
- Chocolate Croissant: Really good! This is my significant other's go-to order! Highly recommended!
- Danube Waves: This is a German vanilla cake that is topped with chocolate cake, cherries, butter cream and chocolate ganache. The one that I had from Crusty Bun had too much buttercream....if they had cut down the buttercream, it would have been perfect.
- Witch Pretzel: this caramel twisted pretzel is topped with sugar glaze. I probably wouldn't get this again. It was way too sweet IMO.
In summary, if you have never been to The Crusty Bun, I would highly recommend it! It is definitely worth the try! Just keep in mind that the dessert pastries are generally pretty sweet but they do a great job with all their other pastries.
Yummy vegetable soup. Usually hit timmies for quick lunch but decided for something more homemade. Sandwich and soup was very good. My husband had fruit cheese cake but he didn't like it. Bit pricey and with counter service debit asked for tip. Oh well good thing the food was
So good
This is a great German deli, the pretzels are legit like mama used to make and everything is oh so fresh. Deserts are very flavourful and not too sweet.
I've been searching for sour dough bread that has been fermented 24 hours to give rich flavour and health benefits. Crusty Bun definitely delivered! All their bread is apparently sour dough, but the one I got was Farmers sourdough and omgosh soooo good. And less than 7 bucks for half a loaf! Half a loaf was actually bigger than a regular loaf you would get at a grocery store. Also had 2 of their little pie things, also very flavorful and priced fairly. Exceeded my expectations and I think I will be getting all my bread from here from now on!! :)
Yum yum! Delicious! Decor is fresh and cute. I felt like I was in a cafe in London. Lots of variety in baked goods. It was hard to pick out something to try. I can't wait to go back and try more items. This is a great place to get unique fresh baked bread and sweet treats!
I will be back! Stopped in for a Rye Crusty bun and coffee. The smell in there just put me in my happy place. Would like to try their soup and sandwich next time.
And they have an MTS hotspot 😌
I’ve heard about The Crusty Bun on St. Mary’s road several times over the last few years. The reviews from friends have always been positive. Despite it’s being located just down the Street from St. Mary Magdalene Anglican Church, I’ve never been in. That’s mainly because my visits to SMM generally occur after The Crusty Bun closes for the day.
I never realized how much I would enjoy bread until I came here. The bread here is always fresh and they have a wide variety of breads and desserts to choose from as well. Another thing that I enjoy about this place is their local jams and butter they provide with your meal.
I have been to this bakery over the years and stopped in the other day for a little something. I had forgotten how good it is. It is not what I would call a trendy spot,, but it has stood the test of time because it is no nonsense just plain fabulous!. There is a German flair to the baking, reminds of the way my mom and grandma used to bake, Fruity delights like apple cake, cherry railroad tracks and poppy seed rolls glazed with lemon icing. Wonderful homemade soups that change daily. Soft pretzels and croissants that are perfect.
There are also amazing breads to take home, rye, multi seed, pumpernickel to name a few. It really fills up at lunch time so go early if you want a spot.
I'm salivating just thinking about their smoked salmon sandwich...yummy....!!! 😝 Just make sure you get there early... It gets quite busy during lunch hour and the bread tends to go fast!
Winnipeg in the winter - all you can do is stay warm and eat good food, right? Diet starts in the spring.... Here are some of my favorite places in Winnipeg...The Crusty Bun is another hidden gem...To begin with, it is an amazing European bakery - breads, pastries, the most amazing Christmas stollen, and of course, the crusty buns (my favorites are studded with pumpkin seeds and drizzled with cheese - they are truly crusty with a soft chewy interior).
Turkey on Pumpkin Seed Bun. Delicious! An absolute favourite.
Notice this bakery few years ago, this is the first time I went there and the place was tidy and bright, staff was full of energy and very polite, food were fresh, everything was awesome to me, strongly recommend this place, but go there earlier, coz their bread gone so fast!
Such good bread. I am a self professed carb-o-holic so this place is like heaven to me! I've never eaten in here, but all the baked goods I've tried are so good it's really just a matter of time. Their namesake crusty buns are TO DIE FOR, with that perfect buttery crust and light, airy insides. I also love the sunflower loaf: careful though, the large sized loaf of bread is actually ridiculously big, it took our family of five almost two weeks solid to polish it off! The only thing is that their hours are kind of wierd, so be sure to phone ahead.
A Divine Weekly Ritual. We stopped in at The Crusty Bun one day on a new route to work, since they are just opening on our commute in. And it's become an addiction. We have to limit ourselves to stopping once, because we have not yet had one thing that isn't delicious, and that doesn't brighten our day. We've tried every bread, and our favourites remain the sunflower or pumpkin seed crunch. It's a treat to stop in shortly after opening and get a ham and cheese pretzel for breakfast, the cheese still soft and the pretzel still hot. They have a wide variety of sweet delights too, but their creams and pastries aren't overly sweet, but are succulent and rich. The beesting cake is heavenly and I could always eat a hazelnut twist. It's become one of my favourite places in Winnipeg, where the bakers always offer a smile. It smells AMAZING and tastes even better! You won't regret anything from here. It's given me a whole new appreciation of bread, good bread, and filling bread that leaves you sighing in delight.
I will be back. This bakery has been on my wish list and I'm happy to say that I have finally come and indulged myself. It was a saturday and they were quite busy. Luckily a couple had just left the table so my friends and I snatched it up. The fresh baked bread, delicious! Their railroad tracks, variety of cookies, blueberry square and cream puff were amazing! I took a whole box of goodies home. My friends both found their sandwiches and soups to be quite good and satisfying. I will definitely be coming back!
Great buns. I live close to The Crusty Bun and frequently buy their baked goods. The sandwiches are very small and simple, so it's hard to justify the price, but they are delicious. I've sampled many buns and pastries, but I find that their best products are the hearty, seed covered buns. For German baking, this place is Winnipeg's best.
Delightful. Had their small German breakfast and I felt like I was transported back to the time I spent in Germany. The crusty buns had a crust that was light and crisp with the fluffiest centre. The ham, cheese, and jam was all top quality. Also tried a choco croissant (fabulous chocolate) and a poppyseed pastry (complemented with apricot jam). A small, but delightful space.
This is an amazing bakery. Fresh bread blew my mind. The black and white cookie is a must try
Excellent Baked Goods. This bakery has pastries that are to die for. My personal favorite is the cream ball which is a delicious large cream puff filled with a vanilla custard cream and sour cherry preserves ... Best pastry EVER!!! Their bee sting cake and apple Danishes are also exceptional. Their breads are made with old world recipes and are a great step up from bland grocery store breads. Crusty Bun is definitely worth a try and after one visit ... I bet you'll be hooked!!!
Yummy little Sandwiches. Ok, so this place was introduced to me by a friend, it is sort of confusing, as it looks more like a bakery to just pick up bread, which it is as well as a little cafe.
there is only a few tables and it sort of is pick up and seat down with your food. But super clean, and they are super friendly.
I got the tuna sandwich, and the bun was sooo fresh and had pumpkin seeds ontop... it was a cute little place that one should try if they want something small but filling.

Delicious!. Lots of yummy breads and pastries.
I went here for brunch and enjoyed the "German breakfast" which is slices of ham and cheese, two crusty buns, a cup of coffee, and really fruity jam.
The bakery is really clean and efficient, and every time I come here I find something else to try. If you haven't been to this place yet (and you like homemade baked goods and soups), you must try it!
Crusty bun feels like a true immaculate European bakery. The breads and buns are simple perfection, please try the pumpkin seed bun sandwiches. The food is simple and delicious!
Walking into the crusty bun reminds me of walking into my Mennonite grandma's kitchen. The food is amazing, everything is so fresh and well made. The owners are also two of the nicest people I have ever met! Do yourself a favor and go to the crusty bun ASAP if you haven't been there yet.

Without exaggerating, this fabulous eatablishment is like stepping into a bakery in Germany. The baking is the most authentic we have ever experienced in north America. Everything is good. Well done, crusty bun!
Best in Town. The Crusty Bun offers a large selection of German pastries and Breads. They also have a selection of light German Lunch fare. I have sampled many of their pastries and have found that they are all outstanding in taste and quality.
Fresh Bread. Went here early afternoon on a Saturday for lunch and treats. I first only thought this place was a bakery, but from other reviewers learned they served lunch here as well, and that it was very good so I decided to make the trip. When we walked in there was a small line up of people but more than enough girls at the counter, so we got helped rather quickly. They have a small, but nice selection of sandwiches which were wrapped up in the cooler. I thought when I ordered a salami sandwich on a seed bun they would simply take one out of the cooler but instead they made it fresh. It was a very simple sandwich: salami, mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickle but incredibly delicious. I am going to have to say it was because of the bun it was served on. Crusty and seedy on the outside but fresh and soft on the inside. The only downer is that you pay $4.50 for a sandwich which isn't that big. It doesn't take a lot of food to fill me up, but I was still very hungry after. They sell the seed buns of 90cents, so you are paying $3.60 for basically 2 thin slices of salami and a slice of pickle/tomato/lettuce. I also sampled their cheese pretzel stick, which is amazing I might add. If you like cheese buns you will love this.
For take home goodies I tried the almond crescent (?) which was a thick and sweet crescent covered in almonds and dipped in chocolate on the ends. While it doesn't look big it is very sweet and heavy and I could not eat it all at once. I also tried the beesting cake which was also amazing. It is cake with puff pastry on either end and stuffed in the middle with a custard cream and topped with almonds. Highly recommend. My bf tried the cream puff and loved it, and also their soup of the day which was a chicken and rice with potatoes (odd combo) but tasted delicious and homemade.
Will be back soon for some of that yummy bread and more desserts to take home.
Very good bread. I have tryed there soups and seed bun sandwiches. Very good. A little pricey maybe. Hard to find a seat at lunch time. There breads are very good Europeon style. Some good desserts also
Fresh Healthy & Tasty. Loved my lentil soup and tuna multi-grain pita here the other day though the pita was more leavened-like flat bread than a thin pita. The lettuce and tomato was fresh and crisp despite the sandwich coming out of plastic wrap from the display case and the tuna was not overly laden with mayo. What was even better were the two dessert squares I took home to enjoy later. One was a cherry strudel and the other cherry cheese cake. Very very yummy and not too sweet which I liked !! Could eat those all day !!!
This place is great !!. Decided to check this place out one day when I was in ST Vital to do some shopping, I had a sandwich with the pumpkin seed bun....wow it was amazing, the bread was so crunchy on the out side and the middle was nice and fluffy, and was packed with pumpkin seeds on the outside. I also tried the chocolate macaroon, it was super moist, chewy and rich. This place is just great for rustic breads and pastries.
Nice sweets, lovely bread and pretty caf. I had to swoop by this place before heading to the airport; I wanted to bring goodies back to Calgary. I got a salted pretzel, two german tea cakes and a loaf of light rye (all stuffed as gingerly as possible into my backpack). While I was there, I figured I'd have some light dinner so I got a salami sandwich on a seeded crusty bun.
My sandwich was tasty and the bun was quite nice, though at $5-ish dollars, the sandwich did seem a bit wee (I don't need huge, but maybe a touch larger or cheaper for the size). No complaints on freshness though, so I suppose that's "homemade pricing".
Once home, I shared my loot with my husband, and while I thought the pretzel had a nice dark brown crust, I discovered that they don't really drive me wild. They're good, just not over-the-moon good. I suspect they make a fine pretzel, and that I'm just a devotee.
The german tea cakes were lovely though: nice flaky pastry with a somewhat crustier/crumblier top and powdered (icing) sugar :) My husband likened it to a Passion Flakie, but far better (and minus the white cream and 'fruit' jelly). I'd easily have a couple more of those.
The rye was nice too - obviously fresh, with a lovely flavour and aroma. I should've picked up some salami of my own to have with it.
The café was cute, bright, and very clean. Staff was polite (if not as cheery as the shop; in their defense, an interac repair guy was in their road) and efficient.
Great brunch supplies. It's a bright clean space, with lots of pastries and breads. I stopped in to pick up goodsies for brunch. I got a Crusty Bun Sandwich for my husband, which he really liked. I also got several pastries. My favorites were the apple croissant, cherry cake and the german tea pastry, which was awsome...sort of strudel baked on croissant dough. Yummy stuff, although not cheap. I'll be back to sample other pastries and try some of the rustic looking breads.
Great place to enjoy a soup and sandwich for lunch. The fresh bread and buns are AMAZING. My favourite are the multigrain seed buns. The desserts are also all amazing. My picks are the beesting cake and Omas streusel.
Amazing!!!. This place is amzing! The smell, the cleanliness and decoration of the cafe - and of course the taste of all the baked goods! The bread and buns are just like in Germany! Crusty and sooooooooooooooo good! I don't have one single item I could praise the most! Everything is just spectacular!
Great fresh bread. The breads are awesome. The sandwiches are a bit pricey, however it tastes fresh and healthy. I had the lentil soup with chicken, and it's one of the tastier and less salty soup I had from a eat-out place in quite some time. Just like home-made. The selling point is still the bread.. they smell and taste so good!
This place is amazing, all the food is made from scratch daily and tastes great
Smells soooo good. As soon as you walk in you smell the fresh bread... mmmmm .... The lady at the front greeted me promptly and was very nice she offered me a sample of raisin bread ... I ended up getting a sandwich and a multigrain loaf of bread ... the atmosphere is so nice and cozy the colors are vibrant and welcoming ... I will defiantly return!
Memories of Germany. Mmmmmm, glorious fresh German baked goods - crusty buns, hearty breads, Bavarian pretzels and fresh German cakes such as rhubarb and sour cherry are all fabulous! Try it all!
Man, I can not wait for the next time I can go to this place. Everything there tasted so good and wasn't all that expensive. I hope everyone has a chance to go to this place and try one or two of their desserts (I recommend the macaroon!) because it has lots of sitting space and very friendly staff.
This is a local Winnipeg gem that you must visit. Buns are made fresh daily and you can enjoy a hand made sandwich using fresh ingredients. There are tables and chairs to enjoy your sandwich with a coffee and also their hand made desserts. Better get there early or order in advance to make sure you get your selection guaranteed. Check out their daily soup as well.
There is something for everyone to try and enjoy. My favorite is a salami sandwich.
Love love Crusty Bun!
Everything here is so yummy!
Just treat yourself to something nice from here.
Nice selection of baked good. Croissants are great here! Come earlier in the day to make sure they still have some. Lots of breads to choose from, they will slice it for you if you all.
My go to bakery for bread. The breads and crusty buns have such a nice outer crunch to them. The prices are very reasonable. The pastries are delicous and have some nice classics. Probably about 10-15 different kinds of pastries to choose from. A little coffee shop is a added bonus. I usually meet a friend for coffee and a pastery, and then buy my bread to go home.
Excellent first experience. 5 stars for the food and it's variety. 5 stars for friendly and helpful staff. 5 stars for the restaurant itself - great layout, spacious and easy parking.
Will be back soon!
It's my childhood bakery. I've been coming here since I was a child. The bread and pastries are always baked fresh and the service is always fast and attentive. I especially recommend the classic crusty buns, the pig ears and the crazy sticks.
Great little bakery. Awesome crusty buns and a variety of breads. Raisen buns are always so fresh and tasty. Excellent staff as well.
Today was my first visit here - I came here for lunch with two colleagues and we had a great experience! Excellent professional service, they had vegetarian options as well as meat, soup if you don’t eat bread, and delicious pastries. There’s not a huge selection but if you’re looking for simple, fresh ingredients and excellent quality bread, it’s the place for you! I didn’t have the coffee here but maybe next time will try it. But I bought some pastries to take home and they were a hit - super fresh, European-style, flavourful. Also, the place was bustling-busy and I bumped into two other people I knew!
