Naturally, ordered steak. I got the ribeye and it was massive and cooked exactly as I asked - medium rare. Service was great, our waiter was polite, had a personality and was very attentive. The quality must speak for itself as it was packed in there and we were glad we made a reservation. The decor is outdated but I think it’s all part of their history. It is a steakhouse, so it is priced similar to others like The Keg, Chop, etc. This will likely be a favorite for a fancy occasion!
There is something nostalgic about R&J's. It harkens back to a less complicated time in ones life. Think of the '60's and '70's. Think of Mad Men. Smokey cigarette haze wafting along the rafters of the restaurant , drinking scotch and soda or sipping a martini. slicing in to a fine steak. Couples dressed up in their best togs. Those romantic days are long gone but the furniture remains pretty much the same, as does the menu.
There is still a schmoozey vibe on a Friday or Saturday night in the bar, tables are huddled together, the classic red revolving chairs are pivoting back and forth, large orders are hustled in from the kitchen on massive trays delicately balanced over the patrons heads. The bar food menu is perfect for a quick nosh before heading to a Jets game, theatre or just coming back from the beach. The smoked salmon is schmaltzy, which smooth and rich cream cheese adorned with bite size pieces of bread. For a long time the 'beef bones' were a secret menu item that never appeared on the menu, but now are. Big beefy bones, perfectly sauced. Have one or two with a side of coleslaw and fries, you will leave very satisfied. The hamburger platter is huge. Open faced with all the trimmings of lettuce, tomatoes, onions, bbq sauce and relishes accompanied with a crunchy pickle, fries and coleslaw. If you have to share a sandwich, try the clubhouse. It is truly that big. Crispy bacon and tomato, chicken and dill pickle. The hot roast beef sandwich is always good. Smothered in gravy with fries and a pickle. Have it medium rare with horseradish on the side.
One can also order from the main dining room menu if you just want a casual evening in the bar.
The main dining room with it's white table clothes, the assorted basket of breads to start off your meal is a nice touch from yesteryear. The steaks are always good. From the prime rib to the filet's and all the cuts in between have not disappointed me yet. Ask for your steak to be cooked Chicago style, charred on the outside but perfectly cooked on the inside. The soups are tasty, the salads are cold and crisp.
The waitresses, I have yet to see a waiter serving there! are attentive and accommodating.
There is a reason the R & J's has been there for so long. It's a Winnipeg institution.
My husband and I went last Friday evening and we were looking forward to Rae and Jerry’s all day. They did not disappoint! We had our usual cocktails before the meal.My Martini was perfect as always, they make the best! We both had our Steak Sandwich with Fries and Coleslaw. The onion rings are the best, funnel style and cake like. The steaks were perfect on top of garlic bread. Everything was hot! The service was excellent! The waitress was great. I love this place! We always sit in the lounge. The place was packed, everyone was in a good mood, lots of laughter!
Best Steak Sandwich in the city!!
Came here for lunch with a colleague and we both got the steak sandwich. It is my favorite sandwich on the menu and is a nice rib eye grilled to your liking finished with a BBQ sauce served with onion rings AND fries and coleslaw.
Rae and Jerry's is an institution, so there are a few quirky things about this place. First, they only have Stella and a couple of other beers on tap. Their wine selection is also limited to one page. This isn't like other steakhouses with large draft and wine selections that go on for pages on end. The decor is something out of the 50s or 60s (wasn't around then so I'm actually just guessing), but when you go to the bathroom, you time warp back to 2017 because it's ultra modern! Service here is attentive and seems to include some unavoidable small talk. Most of the wait staff appear older as well.
Our meals were delivered very promptly. As expected, the steak was awesome! Portions are generous and exactly how you'd expect it. The only issue is value. Honestly, lunch for two can set you back quite a bit, but for a treat or special occasion, this place never disappoints.
Time travel back to the days of Sinatra! Rae & Jerry's is awesome! Good eats, traditional and friendly. Great cocktail lounge and tomato juice with your meal! a little pricey but worth the dosh when you're Jonesin' for the red meat!!
Four of us came here. Two had prime rib, two had steak, different cuts. Everyone said their meals were very good. Cooked and flavored perfectly. Price wise I thought the meals were good value as soup, onion on that day and very good, and two other sides are included. Other steak places some of those are add ons. Another big big positive is that it was quiet, no loud music blaring. You can actually talk to people in your party. I would come back.
This is a late review..We came here for lunch as a treat from my former Boss from my former job. The steak was cooked to our likings and was tasty and delicious. Service was on time and friendly staff. The place was quite busy for lunch but not as busy in the evening so I've heard. We'll try this place for dinner next time.
I went to Rae and Jerry's for the very first time recently. The first thing I noticed when I walked into the restaurant was the setting and the atmosphere. We noticed that the setting was quite old-fashioned with red carpets and red chairs all over.
We were served with a basket of assorted bread to start. I loved how diverse the bread that was served to us!
For entree, I had an 8oz Filet Steak with mushroom and mashed potato. The steak was good but it was not extraordinary. It was no comparison with Hys or 529.
The only issue I had the whole evening was that our server was quite inattentive. It took her awhile to finally come back to us to take our order.
Overall, I would definitely go back to this place again, perhaps not on a special fancy date but definitely on a regular date night.
We went here for the first time last week for an early Christmas celebration dinner, and we were not disappointed. The decor has gone past dated to wonderfully vintage. Everything from the carpet to the furniture has clearly been taken care of over the years, so the mid 20th century decor creates a nostalgic elegance. The entrance to the restaurant is amazing and large, with wonderful coat check and hostesses to greet you. Our server looked like she'd been there since the restaurant was built, and her personality was more than lacklustre, but the quality of food, and timing of service made it a minor issue overall.
My filet mignon was probably the best restaurant steak I've ever had. The menu is outdated, yes... but I love it. Where else can you try classics no longer offered? The menu matches the decor in that it is vintage, well taken care of, and quality. Don't change--this is part of your charm.
I will definitely be back to try other items on the classic yet retro menu!
First time goer to Rae and Jerry's and I was very impressed. The décor is very vintage and has an Old school feel when you walk in. The hostesses were very friendly and so was our server. I had the filet mignon, it was AMAZING. I don't usually like my meat too rare but asked for it anyway just to see and I definitely wasn't disappointed. Perfectly crisp and the outside and chewy on the inside. Usually it comes with mushrooms but I got sautéed onions instead, it was perf 👌
Been here twice and they have been exceptional. Great food and amazing service. They were extremely accomadating with our group of 20. Beautiful atmosphere too.
SwizzleStyx. Our group had lunch here today, it wasn't our first time and it certainly won't be our last time. We always eat in the lounge, we just like it in there. People mock the décor here, I love it, it is unique and unlike anything else you'll find. The service is always excellent and the food is always delicious. We dined on the steak sandwich, the clubhouse, the toasted bacon and tomato, the liver and onions, and the smoked salmon...everything was wonderful and far more than we could finish. This restaurant is nothing if not consistent. I always look forward to coming and I always leave happy!
December 2016 - had lunch here again today, the place was packed! Service was still very good and food was fabulous, we had shrimp cocktail, pickled herring, salmon sandwich, onion rings, chicken pot pie and hot roast beef sandwich and everything was excellent :)
Oct 2017 - we dined here again and the food was amazing. Portions are gigantic! We had the devilled eggs and they were yummy. All the meals were excellent. The service, however, was super slow so luckily the food made up for it.
Wed. Lunch Better than Fri. Lunch.... I went on a Wednesday for Lunch and thought it was pretty good. Then, around a month later, went back again for the Friday fish & chips and was grossed out. If I go back I'll do the Wednesday lunch. But, overall too expensive for what ya get.
Up-Date November 2015:
Went for the Wednesday Pot-Roast Lunch. It was totally AMAZING. Holy smokes! Really, really good.
I love Rae and Jerry's. This place has the best spare ribs and prime rib in the city. Make sure you get the skinny French fries with gravy.
Phenomenal food, amazing restaurant!. We went to celebrate our anniversary and were not disappointed. It lived up to the hype!
Food was fresh, tender, and some of the best prime rib I've ever had. All our dishes were great, and the bread basket had a wonderful assortment.
The restaurant itself is beautiful, and I'm so glad they have kept the vintage vibe. It feels sleek and fresh, but not tacky or outdated!
One of Winnipeg's best meals, hands down.
Old School Cool. I really enjoyed my dinner at Rae & Jerry's last week. I've been wanting to go for years. This is a place my grandparents used to frequent, and I will admit, we were the youngest diners by about 30 years. However this did not change the way we were served or the food quality.
We felt a bit under-dressed, but after a quick glance around the dining room, it wasn't uncommon. So don't feel like you have to dress up to feel comfortable, but you wouldn't stick out if you did.
Onto the service. Our server was prompt and polite. Our food was served in good time and we didn't feel rushed at all. This is a great place for an anniversary, birthday or retirement dinner. I do feel like busy nights might affect the service or quality of the food. Since it wasn't too busy when we went, perhaps we lucked out.
We enjoyed our food very much. The steaks were cooked perfectly. This is a steakhouse, so I imagine that's what they do best. I did also enjoy the coleslaw and the garlic mashed potatoes were AMAZING! My cocktail was also a generous size and very, very tasty. We finished with an incredible crème brûlée with a side of tea and coffee. The bill was well over $100, but we felt it was worth it. Next time we might just try the lounge for a drink or two.
Had the steak sandwich in the lounge. Did not like the sauce that was on the steak and would ask to have it without next time. Beyond that all was good. Love the style of the place and sadly didn't see an mob figures.
Classic steakhouse with good steaks and a nice, classy atmosphere. Good spot for a nicer meal.
Still great after all these years. I attended school in Winnipeg and went to Rae and Jerry's for the very first time in 1978. I had been to the restaurant for MANY lunches, dinners, drinks, events, etc. Ive always had great food from this restaurant. I love that this place looks the same as it did in the 60's... The place is comfortable and has a fabulous atmosphere......great chairs.....large tables ....cosy booths....great service.....This is the kind of restaurant people use for special occasions ..Rae and Jerry's is a restaurant you can dine at EVERY DAY. The food is not fussy and many of my friends and I used this establishment as our kitchen. Presently I live on the West Coast and Italy but still travel through Winnipeg regularly ...... I wouldn't miss having a meal at Rae and Jerry's. Grenadine of beef is the winner for me..... Great job R&J's....
Fantastic Anniversary Dinner. My wife, family and I celebrated her parent's 55th wedding anniversary at Rae & Jerry's Steak House last week. All ten of us thoroughly enjoyed our evening. All dinner selections from prime rib, grenadine of beef and jumbo shrimp were delicious and the service that was provided by Judy and the other server was excellent. One of the favorite desserts from the wide selection to choose from was creme brulee. Another thing that we appreciated was a round table that allowed us to all converse with one another without difficulty. Can't wait for the next visit!
A FABULOUS RESTAURANT FROM START TO FINISH. Rae and Jerry's has not missed a beat for as long as I have been going there(20+ years). From ample parking, sophisticated staff, quality food and drinks in both appearance and taste, huge portions, a wonderful decor(much quieter and far better laid out than the "other steak house" chain), to great prices, this restaurant will tickle your fancy time and time again.
Yummy Rae and Jerry's Yum Steakhouse. Rae and Jerry’s Lounge is an institution in Winnipeg. Rae and Jerry are long gone, but the decor has remained. Everything old is cool again, and the red, black, and wood lounge is back in style, in a Madmen kind of dimension. The lounge has its own (ahem, cheaper) menu and the greatest old-school cocktails. I had a champagne cocktail for $ 6.25 and it was so full I don’t know how the waitress managed to carry it without spilling. Quite the deal! The dining room’s menu is more extensive but more expensive! Luv the lounge!
The service was excellent. The wait staff is efficient, polite and professional. We ordered our drinks, and then we both ordered a steak sandwich, medium. We did not wait very long for our food. It was served in a great combo of steak on toast with barbecue sauce, fries, delicious cole slaw, and yummy onion rings. My friend’s steak was thicker and juicier, while mine looked like its poor thinner, drier cousin. Marks deducted! However, being quite a regular customer, I put it down to an off night, as this has never happened before, so I did not complain.
Dessert was a delicious ~ hummm~ New York-style cheesecake topped with a luscious sauce and about five large and juicy black cherries. It was large enough to share and we each enjoyed a great cup of coffee. However, for $3.00 a cup, it should be good!!
Overall, it was a a very good dinner, and we will definitely be back.
Consistently great food great service. You can't go better than R&J's!
So good. Went for dinner with my friend, both had the 6oz filet. I love the choice of sides and the tomato juice to start. By far better steak than I have had at hys in the past year, it was prepared perfectly and tasted amazing. The garlic mashed potatoes and green beens were also superb, admittedly I do find the mushrooms a little odd (canned??)
We splurged on the coconut cream pie even though we were both too full to eat it and I was blown away by it, I would go back just for coffee and dessert anytime!
2nd Of The 2 Fat Guys
+4.5
Our perceptions are influenced by so many things beyond the plate in front of us, I'll bet Rae & Jerry's is a good example of how a sense of nostalgia might shape our view of this place.
My dad took me here for one of our first father/son steak nights so many years ago when I was maybe 17. I was mesmerized by the experience of feeling like I stepped into the late 50's. Fully expected Deano and Sinatra to saunter out if the lounge at any moment and head to their table.
Nothing much at all has changed to this day, including some of the staff.
To be sure, they do beef right. Properly aged and selected cuts, made to order. No keg spice or wrapped in bacon a schtick. Beef. NY strip is my cut of choice, pops gets the ribeye. Tough to beat.
Limited menu and premium prices. Well worth it for us, and judging by the crowds we're not alone. If you're in to people watching you're bound to catch a glimpse of some of the "who's-who" on any given day. I hosted Will Arnett for a few days last year on a business trip to Winnipeg. He didn't need restaurant suggestions... "How do I get to Rae & Jerry's from my hotel?"
Special place for my dad and I.
Let's do the time warp again.... First things first. At R+J's you do the lounge, not the restaurant. The dim lighting and red leather chairs will make you feel all Don Draper. Classic cocktails - maybe with a shrimp cocktail? The lounge menu is limited but everything on it is pretty safe. The steak sandwich (with crunchy onion rings on top) is really good. I often order it minus the commercial-tasting BBQ sauce they put on it. R+J's also has a really stellar burger. A full half pound of higher quality beef (ground sirloin and chuck?). I don't often do the restaurant itself but in my experience you pay full steakhouse prices for a product that doesn't compare that well to the other high-end joints in town. I have to admit they have some die-hard loyal customers.
Well done Retro. I have to say that every time I go to Rae and Jerry's, it feels like slipping into a very cool time warp! Love the decor. Love, love, love the filet mignon! Yum!
Love the Steak. My boyfriend wanted to go to Ray and Jerry's for his birthday last October. My family being from out of town hadn't been before and were excited to see what all the hype was about. I drive by it quite often and it is always packed!
Well my steak was FANTASTIC. The servers still wear the red blazers that are sure the same uniforms that the restaurant opened with in the 60's and they haven't done any renovating since then but it's all part of the experience. I have been 5 times since there when I have been craving a big juicy steak and every time has been great. The only thing I would say is don't go there if you are in a rush, I like having a nice break between appetizers and dinner but don't go there expecting to be in a out in under 1 1/2 on a busy night.
Always love it. Rae and Jerry's is an experience. If you're not into the retro menu and decor then you are likely to be disappointed. Personally I LOVE that not a thing has changed in the place. I have never had a bad meal here and the servers actually SERVE you. No half naked severs who can't remember a drink order which seems to be the trend these days.
Tastey. Been there twice and the food is awesome. The medalions of beef are the BEST! My hubby really loves the Prime Rib. Bit pricey, but always will come back. Love the old fashioned decor too and service!
Best steak in city. The atmosphere is nice. I like how you can get tomato juice or a salad for a starter. I like the blue cheese dressing but I think it may be kraft! The steak is always good. The prime rib sandwich is nice for lunch with thin homemade fries. This is where I would go if I wanted to go to a steak restaurant. It is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than the Keg or Hy's. The bread is delicious. But now I know where to buy the bread and my husband can cook just as nice steak at home. But I miss the atmosphere. :( Such cozy seats.
Love the ambiance. Rather overpriced, but I love the ambiance and the vodka martinis.
Entertaining. I was recently taken to Rae & Jerry's for a business dinner, and while I enjoyed my visit, and enjoyed their steak even more, I don't think I'd ever go back if I were the one footing the bill.
I've grown up in Winnipeg, and have passed Rae & Jerry's location on Portage Ave hundreds of times, but had never been inside. I'm just not a steakhouse kind of guy. When I want a steak, I'll head down to Costco, buy the best steaks I can (which is seldom more than $10 per steak), and BBQ my own, as opposed to paying a restaurant 3, 4, or 5 times more than it would cost me.
Anyway, when the folks who invited me out suggested R&J's, I happily agreed, being very curious about a place my dad used to consider the best restaurant in town when I was a kid.
Walking in, I felt like I was walking into a Vegas restaurant 70 years ago.......blood-red vinyl everywhere, waitresses in cute, diner-like uniforms, dark wood panelling.......very distinctive for sure. I'm not sure, but I think Dean Martin was sitting over in one corner.
The waitresses (not 'servers' here) look like they've been there for an average of 40 years apiece, and recite their lines with a hint of boredom, but with intimate familiarity with all aspects of the menu.
The bread and salads that came before the meals were tokens only.....and completely forgettable, with store-bought dressings.
I enjoyed a shrimp cocktail appetizer, which had nice, plump shrimp with a spicy cocktail sauce, followed up with an 8-oz sirloin. No fault with the steak - it was cooked perfectly, had an excellent crust on the outside, was perfectly rare on the inside, and could literally be cut with a fork. Everyone at the table reported exceptional steaks, as well.
Service was good, if a little uninspired.
I wouldn't hesitate to go back, but quite honestly, I just don't see the value of paying so much for steak.
However, based on the quality of the food, and how long they've already been in business, I can easily see how they could attract and keep a very loyal following. I wouldn't be surprised if one of my sons were writing an UrbanSpoon review for Rae & Jerry's 20 years from now themselves.
A Plug for the Lounge. I adore Rae & Jerry's for the atmosphere and the drinks, but not so much the food. The whole place is stuck in a time-wharped 60's black hole, which is cool for the ambience, not so much for the menu, which in the dining room still features items like hamburger steak and liver.
My favorite way to experience Rae & Jerry's is by drinking and dining in the deeply red lounge, as I did last night. The retro drink menu features classic tipples you don't see so much of anymore, like old fashioneds and Shanghai slings and Manhattans (all three sampled, and all three great). My nosh was a giant clubhouse sandwich. While its size was impressive, there was no crispy bacon, only fried back bacon. Still, it was pleasant enough, and I only finished half of it. Take a pass on the french fries, which are not crispy and taste off. Opt instead for the funnel-cakey onion rings.
Our server was perfect. She made sure our drinks stayed filled and was exceedingly pleasant.
Lounge fare is pretty good.... From the moment you walk into this Winnipeg institution, you feel like you're being teleported back to the 1960's...and not in the cheesy retro diner kind of way. I almost felt compelled to light up a butt right there, suddenly remembering that it was 2010 and there are now public smoking laws and all...
I had a steak sandwich off their lounge menu, and was impressed. Tender and perfect medium-rare, just like I had ordered, with just enough barbecue sauce. Everything else, be it the hand-cut fries, coleslaw with flecks of green onion, or the onion rings on top of the sandwich, was excellent as well. Finished off with a key lime pie, which was the only disappointment of the night; the graham cracker crust was blah, and instead of meringue topping there was a lazy dollop of whipped cream on the side.
Our server was prompt, friendly and attentive, though I couldn't help but notice some other servers having a rough night.
It's a pricy restaurant (probably on the overpriced side), but it's a nice little indulgence for penny-pinching Winnipeggers. For old-school comfort food, I would strongly recommend R&J's to anyone.
Not bad - a little pricey for the 10oz New York Strip - $50.00 for a meal & a beer, if you like 60's decor check it out!
Great prime rib the sides and a dirty knife were all that kept this from a 5 star dinner. A classic institution. Great drinks, nice to have a classic bar menu.
This place is another tribute to the 50's even down to the uniforms the waitresses wear. No waiters here! Oh, and if you like red, you'll love this place. Great steak. Appetizers and salad are like afterthoughts - go for the beef.
