I had the cheeseburger, order was cooked fresh in under 4 minutes. Served a small fountain pepsi. Burger was plump, hot, fantastic pickle game, fresh cut onion, seasoned perfect. Hasn't changed since I can remember. The stand is clean inside, friendly and prompt service. I will recommend, and return.

It's a must try. Everyone in winnipeg loves VJs. Their homemade burgers are a thing to drive for. I almost forgot to review them. Cant wait for my next trip!
I love Vjs. I work close by, everyone from my work LOVES the burgers, fries and milkshakes. I used to always get the vjs special, but switched to a cheeseburger or double cheeseburger because I get to appreciate the chili a lot more!
Great burger, and unbelievably awesome fries!
Just a few things though: the pickles were huge and a little on the unbalanced side on the burger. Almost an entire pickle on my single patty burger, but that's alright, I just took it off.
You won't find prices on their menu, but a single patty burger, a double VJs, regular fries and a milkshake were less than $30, so the prices are good.
Sadly the milkshake was not the best. I had a strawberry milkshake and it was too syrupy and tasted like chemicals.
Best burger place. Fries are amazing as well, great big portion. Very friendly people. Highly recommend. If I could have a fried egg on top the burger would be perfect.

We were travelling through Winnipeg and I'd read reviews about VJ's. I highly recommend trying it out if you're hungry for a classic burger & fries. Generous portions, tasty spices on burgers and delicious fries!

VJs Drive-In is one of those Winnipeg institutions. The kind of place that eating at marks you out as a true Winnipegger. Which means, I probably wasn’t a true Winnipegger until about six years ago. The picture doesn’t really do justice to the amount of fries in one order. During my time at L.C. Taylor & Co., one of my co-workers, John Platt, took me for lunch at VJs for the first time. On that occasion I had the fries and only the fries. Since then on most of my trips to VJs, fries are also all that I’ve ordered. Firstly, because they are incredibly good and secondly they are a meal unto themselves. Recently though, I decided to give the burgers and hot dogs a try.

A dining experience I've enjoyed at least twice per summer since I've worked downtown. Great "Greeks" burgers and fries out of a joint on Main Street with a lot of character. Standing in line and eating outside in the parking lot on a rickety picnic table (if you're lucky enough to find space at one) is part of the overall experience. The high prices are the only thing that's hard to swallow.
Top tier burguer for sure. Little small patties but the prices are so low that you can just get the double. Absolutly reccomend if your in the area.
Mmmm...VJ's, another one of my "one a year" spots. Always look forward to it and have never been disappointed. The VJ burger and fries and awesome. Fresh, hot fries and the chili and onions and pickles on the burger, just yummy!
It was my first time here and I was pretty happy with my experience. I had the hot dog and fries which was about $9 - not too bad. The food was served fairly quickly and the amount of fries you get is very generous. We all had fries in a packet PLUS another scoop of fries! The fries were also crispy, good, and filled half the box we got. I did expect the hot dog to come plain but it does come with toppings - beef (I believe), onions, and some sort of sauce (closer to a mustard), but still good!!
Always good, always consistent! Never have I had a bad burger from VJ's! Fast service. The area isn't the greatest but you're in and out of there quickly with some pretty awesome food. The fries are delicious and cooked to perfection.
The VJ's Special, with a side of fries, is the benchmark by which I judge all others. A few places have come close, but, to my taste, none has been better, in the ongoing search for the best burger in North America.

Will return. I went for the first time in the spring of 2014 and had a special with fries and it was perfect. It's a Greek style burger with the chilli on it so if you're not used to that it can taste funny, but I grew up on Country Boy burgers in Gimli so I love them. They also have terrific fries, which is something that is painfully lacking at other joints like Mrs. Mike's and Dairi Wip. My mom's swears by the lemon milkshake. It's not fancy for sure, but the food was cooked well and the service was perfectly friendly.

Better post-drinks food option than Johnny G's. After the beer festival, I decided to try VJ's for the first time. The counter staff was friendly and so were all the regular customers waiting in line. We ordered the cheese dog, fries and a VJ's special burger, which is essentially a fat boy burger. The fries don't come salted, so you have to do it yourself. The fries were crunchy and cooked a little on the longer side. The cheese dog was pretty delicious and all the toppings were good, with a nice soft bun and a hot dog which is longer than the bun. My favorite was the VJ's special burger, which had just enough chili but wasn't as messy as other fat boys I've eaten.
Update: Came back again to try the cheeseburger and a mango milkshake. The milkshake was overly sugary and sweet. The cheeseburger was good and without all the sauce from the VJ's special, you could taste all the seasonings in the patty.

Best Burgers in Town - seriously!. I have lived in many cities in this fair country. VJ's is the finest burger joint in Winnipeg, by far; and very possibly the best in Canada. Well done John! You guys run a great operation.
The menu is classic for a burger joint, and everything is excellent... the burger meat is always juicy and flavourful, the chilli spiced perfectly, love the pickles!, and the fries are golden and crunchy - the best you will ever have.

I tried the VJ Special (equivalent of a "Fat Boy") the other day, and it was fantastic! I actually noticed how tasty and juicy the patty was; I'm usually in a burger for the toppings, but when I notice the meat, I know it's an extra-special burger.

After the pub, or before a ball game. Vj's I still like it, but I wonder if the owner still enjoys it. He seems a bit like he's going to work to painfully feed people, but yet still puts out a good burger, and fires. I would have said many years ago this place was the best of the greasy spoon dinners, but clearly that honorer goes to Mrs. Mike's.
Vj's now to me is not as much about the food, but location and hours. After going to the King's Head Pub or before ball game this is where you go to fill up on fries, and a decent burger to boot.
I don't go to Vj's as often as I did 20 years ago, as a kid it was always special to go to this drive-inn on Main. The last time I went the food was only okay, staff was more impatient, and the owner at this point should just sell. He seems over worked and under appreciated, just showing up to work because well that's what he knows-- the love disappeared long ago !
Only other negative thing I can say is you might want to eat in your car, as once you sit down you will be confronted by baggers looking for spare change or asking if you can leave them a little food. Leaving them some fries should be a problem as the sizes are huge and filling. If you are an urban type who isn't afraid of the city scruffs, then this wont bother you, if you are a shy suburban goer this might be a bit much for your comfort.
Either-way I can still say Vj's is a decent dinner institute of Winnipeg, and will fill your hunger for larger burgers and fires well into the late night.
BEST BURGER IN WINNIPEG!!!. Ahhhh... Nothing like a VJ's burger! The only burger I ever get is the VJ's special, which is like a fatboy but so much better. What makes the burger for me are those huge pickles and the chili which is obviously homemade. You can taste the nutmeg and cumin in it. The burgers are sloppy, but oh so good! Great hangover remedy. Whenever friends from out of town visit (former Winnipeggers) we go there for a bite.
Hangover?. The remedy is at this place. Great hangover food.

Lovin' VJ's. I have heard nothing but good things about VJ's since I moved to Winnipeg, so I had to go there. It had an amazing atmosphere just as your walking in you get a lovely smell. The building was nothing special but the employees all seemed very happy. Joel, I believe his name was, greeted me with a smile, and was very nice and friendly. I thought it took a little long for my food, but the wait was well worth it. Top ten best burger I have ever had. The fries were equally amazing. Now I can see how it has made the headlines in so many papers.
What's not to like?. Seriously, the menu is as simple burger joint as it gets. Cheeseburger, fries, and a pepsi for ten and change. Stuffed. Enough fries to make a guy explode. Burger had just the right ratio of toppings(mustard,onions,chili,pickles). The staff are friendly, and move you through fairly quickly during the busy lunch hour.
Is definitely a must have burger in Winnipeg during the summer.

Most consistent burger in the City. I wouldn't call them the best burger joint in the city. You can go to other burger joint and get a better burger once in awhile. But unlike most places the food at VJ's is always good or great.

Delicious. I'm really quite shocked that anyone could write a bad review of VJ's! I completely understand why this place is legendary in Winnipeg. My husband and I usually get a VJ's Special each and share an order of fries, which is a nice amount for two people (too much if you aren't hungry though). The staff are really friendly, efficient and professional. We have even had some fun banter with other customers while waiting for our FRESHLY COOKED food. I admit I love burgers and fries, but this is seriously one of my favorite burgers not only in Winnipeg, but anywhere.
Bottom line: We will be back again and again for many years to come!

Decent enough. A fairly tasty fat boy style burger. Sloppy and greased up. It has more appeal as a Main Street staple and late night rest stop. Prices in sync with similar fare elsewhere. Worth a visit at least once.
Decent Burger Joint - Over Hyped Though.... Decent burger spot - nothing special 6.5/10
It is still good, but not as good as it used to be. I remember the big portion of VJ's Drive-in and the delicious taste of it's burger. I also remembered I can always have it when I was kinda broke and get away with good feeling, satisfied and full. But now, the burger bun is kinda thin. And it shrunk in size and the price is more expensive now. The taste is more about the same as it used to be.
This place is busy at 12am in a snow storm, tells you how good it is, diners drive In and dives need to stop by.
This is one of the better burger and fries joints, its been around for a long time. The long line ups tell you how good it is. No place to eat inside, but lots of picnic tables.

Best greasy food in town. Typical greasy food place but far off better than any greasy burger joint in winnipeg the only place leveled with it is Half Moon which is in Lockport. The fries are super greasy and ofcourse the food is fast. The only problem really is it's not indoors and cash only which is frusterating.
Like it. Like the burgers and fries. They all taste homemade and are fresh and hot. One of the better places in the city to have a burger/fries. They put chilli on their burgers so if you don't like that you have to say something ahead of time. Reasonable prices. There is a parking lot and you order in what seems like a shack. You get your food quickly. Probably have eaten here 20 times.

Only Go If You Got Cash!. Can't go wrong with VJs! I love going there in summer. The burgers are unrivaled and even though I'm not a milkshake person, I buy one every time I go to VJs! If you haven't been to VJs, you should definitely check it out!

This place has been on my radar for sometime. With the sun shinning, it was a beautiful day to explore Winnipeg.
And what better way to top it off then with a stop at this iconic burger joint. I opted for the VJ special and a side of fries.
The burger can be tastefully messy, but it is still a wonderful experience. The copious amount of fries were golden and crispy.
Judging from the size of the burger and the fries, you could certainly share this. If you aren’t into sharing your burger, definitely share the fries.
Johnny and his fam(crew) have been serving their signature delicious value for money burgers for more than 2 decades.
Their delicious chili added moist patty burgers are worth it to stop and have a fricking bite once every few weeks.
Plus so many places around to have a mini snack outside.
It's a simple menu and they are all made with a load of heart and passion.

This is one of few great experience I've ever have in the burger category in Wpg. I ordered the cheese burger. From the bread, patty, lettuce, pickles all are align with the hype that I have been hearing about, which is why I am curious and try it. However, the cheese burger is a tad too salty for my taste. On the other hand, the fries! The fries is awesome! No ketchup, no nothing.... just hot sauce, you are good to go! Even without anything, it can still compete with some fries you find in a casual family restaurants.
Settings: drive-in, takeaway order.

VJs what can I say, it’s a family owned restaurant with honestly some of the best burgers in the city, it melted in my mouth and every bite was perfect, everything was proper cooked and tasted great, they gave me a free water and I gave them a decent tip for their troubles. They are friendly the staff are nice and it really has a home cooking vibe. Great job and can’t wait to go back to try more I only had a Chance to get a cheese burger but it has been my favourite burger in a long time.

Lived in this city my whole life and driven past this place countless times. Had some time today to stop in on my way through downtown, so I thought, “Let’s do this!” Coming north bound, you can’t turn left, so you just have to compensate for the roadways. Not an issue, just an FYI. Parking was good, as it seems most people aren’t there very long - just getting their food and driving off with it. Not all pricing on the sign is accurate. They have updated pricing on the hand-written signs on the windows. Cost has gone up for everything, so not surprised. Stood in line with some regulars. They were talking about how people who have lived here forever and always drive by finally stop in for the first time. I smiled and raised my hand. I said, “That’s me, today!” The server was very helpful regarding all my questions and I got the scoop on how to order from the regulars in line. Everyone was in a great mood, talking about the delicious food and the great weather.
Cash only. I ordered a ‘Special’ which is a cheeseburger with all the fixings, a fry (one size only) and a chocolate shake. I took the advice of one of the other patrons and got my fries in a box vs a bag as I planned to eat them in my car, en route to my destination and added vinegar and salt right at the counter.
Fries were super crispy and tasty!
Burger was flavourful, but the bun was completely coming apart in my hands. I had to eat it much faster than I would’ve liked and didn’t get to savour the experience. Maybe I’ll eat at the picnic tables next time, as my burger bun won’t have a chance to get too moist and crumbly.
The chocolate shake was thick, which I love. Not easy to find those anymore, for some unknown reason. They had many flavours to choose from, so I might venture to get a peach one next time.
Menu is pretty basic, which isn’t a bad thing. It allows them to process orders fairly quickly.
An overall great experience. I plan on coming back soon!
