Review Bonfire Bistro - Winnipeg

Geoffrey
Bonfire Bistro This cozy little Bistro has limited parking. We parked on a nearby street. We waited outside to be seated. With the signs in the window we weren't sure we had been seen. Not to worry we were seated quickly by our friendly server. We had a large choice in seats in the two main rooms. We chose a bigger table near the window. We quickly got our menus and our choice of beverages. We chose the chicken with fig sauce and the beet salad with goats cheese and candied walnuts. The chicken was delicious, tender and juicy. It was served on sliced potatoes along side of carrots, broccoli, asparagus and cauliflower. The potatoes were so flavourful and cooked to perfection, the fig sauce mixing in from the chicken. The vegetables also tasted fresh and not over done. The beet salad was tasty original. The beets were sweet buttery and tender. The goat's cheese paired wonderfully with the beets. The arugula was young and tender and not bitter, the candled walnuts being crunchy and sweet added texture and completed the salad. Our food was brought out promptly. The service here was excellent, the food was great, the restaurant was clean. It's a great date night spot.

Great atmosphere and food, what a find!! Prices are right where they should be average cost per dish is around $26.00.

A truly enjoyable place to dine. We didn't have a reservation, on a Friday... total parent of young children mistake, but Diana made room for us at the bar. All staff were fabulous. All of them. Everyone smiled at us and helped us to make the experience with our three young children as easy as could be. The pizza chefs even brought the pizza over so they could talk to the kids and see how they liked it. Everything was delicious to say the least. This is the best mac and cheese I've ever had. The pizza was inhaled, and the beet and goat cheese salad was fresh, flavourful and crisp. Of course I would rather drive here with a friend or my husband, but I wouldn't hesitate to go as a family again.

We had a lovely meal this evening at this restaurant. It wasn't the first time we had dined there. We ordered the Beet and goat cheese salad and the Manitoba chicken breast. To drink was the Aranciata flavor of San Pellegrino. The meals came fast and were delicious. I especially liked the dijon vinaigrette and candied walnuts on the salad. Great mix of flavours with the roasted beets and soft goat cheese. We were there later in the evening - around 9pm - so it wasn't that full in the restaurant, with space to have a good conversation. Ambiance is very nice. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable. Thanks for a great meal.

Service is wonderful. Caesar salad needs serious work and not worthy of a restaurant of this caliber. Pizza had great overall flavors but was soggy in the middle on arrival to the table and the dough lacks taste (should be able to stand as it’s own work of art since this is the restaurants’ core competence). The brisket with gnocchi is excellent.

We had a family dinner, my 4 y.o. son went home telling us “that is the best pizza” :) the food is really delicious and the presentation is great. Desserts are well done and very tasty. (Photos included) the place looks very clean and quite. Staff are also friendly and very helpful.

Great service, food quality was great. Shared a pizza and a salad - plenty for 2. Enjoyed wine, weren't rushed by server.

Went tonight with my wife and a friend and we all had Caesar salads and shared 2 wood fired pizzas. Plenty of food. Pizzas were spicy pepperoni and a pear prosciutto. The Caesar was excellent...just the right amount of homemade dressing. Pizzas were good. Spicy pepperoni not that spicy but lots of tomato and delicious pepperoni. The pear, prosciutto and onion pizza was good maybe a tad bland for me. We arrived when they opened at 5pm as they don't take reservations. The restaurant filled up fast as it doesn't seat a lot of guests. Friendly, efficient server and we topped it off with a chocolate cream brulee. Best part of a good meal. Had coffees and no alcohol. $81 + tip.

Who would of known...pear on my pizza with a little blue cheese and prosciutto
...brilliant. we devoured our perfect za. Their salads are garden fresh and we always leave full and very happy. I more than highly recommend this adorable gem of a place!!!

Tried Bonfire Bistro for the first time with an out of town coworker who is a vegetarian. The reviews looked good and the vegetarian options are plentiful so thought it would be a good way to go.

The service was very friendly and the prices on the menu seemed extremely reasonable. However, a restaurant can have the best service in the world but that makes no difference if the food is lacking. We thought there was no chance of that based on the reviews.

The food arrived VERY well presented and the portion sizes were generous. We thought we were in for a treat. The taste was - shocking.

Bland isn’t even the word for it.

I tried the New Zealand Lamb Shank and my coworker tried the Margherita Pizza. They both tasted the same. Just nothing there. The risotto that accompanied the lamb did have a nice mild flavour but that lamb was boring, tired and flavourless. I didn’t finish it. I took it home to doctor it into something I could eat. My coworker said that pizza tasted like cardboard.

Due to the reviews I would chalk this up to an off night or we just tried the wrong items; but there is absolutely no chance I would go back. Too many restaurants in Winnipeg that consistently deliver a positive dining experience to risk this again.

Two stars for the service.

The Swizzle Styx had lunch here and I’m not sure we’d go back. The service was awful but the food was great so it’s hard to rate the place. We were there for 25 minutes before a beverage reached our table and it wasn’t busy. Just after that we finally placed our appetizer order and then I watched as the appetizers sat on the counter for 7 or 8 minutes before being brought to the table. Things did get a bit better after that. The waitress was knowledgeable and experienced but just so slow. The food was excellent.

My 85 year old grandmother decided she was taking my partner and I out for dinner, and we choose Bonfire Bistro. The food was pretty good, but the server, Jon was amazing. He was so patient and sweet with my grandmother, never rushing her, always making sure she understand everything; very respectful and patient. The pizza cook was great as well, as when she saw me looking for a place to stash my grandmothers walker, she jumped from behind the counter to move some chairs, so it could be close but safely out of the way. The food was good, but we are going back for the service. Thank you!

Omg what a cozy little restaurant. Casual atmosphere, nice and quiet for conversation. Food was delicious, pizza was a nice balance of delicious sauce, toppings and crust. Will go again.
The Heavy Hitters
I feel like we are missing something here because we had massive expectations based on reviews and only an OK experience. We went on a weekday for lunch and ordered a chicken pizza ($18) and 1/2 veggie pizza with green salad combo ($13) along with, of course, a couple glasses of wine ($11 each). The crowd was mostly middle aged and well dressed and it was somewhat busy. We were expecting the best pizza EVER and just didn't get it. The chicken pizza was okay but not worth $18 or remotely mind-blowing. The veggie pizza had more toppings but of the 4 slices one didn't have cheese. The salad was pretty good but only consisted of spring lettuce mix, onions, pecans and dried raisins (or something that tasted like that). More veggies would have been nice. We left hungry. The service was also VERY laid back and a little slow which is typical of a place that is a bit fancy but at lunch time you would think they would understand many patrons are on a break with limited time.
Maybe it's because the Hitters have done a lot of travelling and have had a lot of wood-fired pizza all over the place or maybe it was just an off-day where we picked the wrong items but based on previous reviews I feel like we must be crazy in the head for writing this average-at-best one. Perhaps the non-pizza menu items are mind-blowing. Some suggestions would be great for us to consider a return visit.

I went to Bonfire Bistro for the first time last week. We ordered the Prosciutto and Pear pizza, Chicken Pesto pizza and the Pork Tenderloin specialty pizza. In addition, we ordered the Seafood Spinach Linguine. I was quite impressed by the amount of seafood that was served with the pasta and for the value we were paying for, it was totally worth it! Although we were disappointed with the uncooked clams within the seafood pasta, the food and service were both excellent overall! I would still highly recommend it!

The only down side to the restaurant is that it does not take any reservations and the maximum group that they take in is 6 people. If you have plans to check out Bonfire Bistro, arrive early to guarantee yourself a spot, otherwise, be prepared for a wait!

My family have dined at Bonfire Bistro many times. We have yet to have bad experience. Food and service is always phenomenal. Highly recommended.

Great place! The food was awesome. Server was very friendly. I had the Spicy Bonfire Pizza. A bit of spice and a bit of sweet, perfect combo. The caprese salad was fantastic. The place is happening so be prepared to wait for a table!

My buddy was a chef in Winnipeg told me I had to come to Bonfire Bistro so was in town recently so had to try it out. Its a nice little bistro with the wood fire oven in the kitchen. I ordered the bonfire flat bread with the red lentil hummus, roasted red peppers & feta cheese & I also ordered the paella. The flat bread was delicious anything with roasted red pepper on it I will love but the red lentil hummus was delicious too. Paella is a rice dish & this one comes with mussels, chicken, prawns, chorizo, green onions, peas & scallops that is bake with saffron rice. I was not a big fan of the paella the mussels ended up taking over the flavor of the entire dish it might as well have been a mussel paella. Next time I am in Winnipeg I will have to try something else here I heard from so many people that this place rocks so I will have to try it again.

Another great meal. A friend and I arrive at 6:00 on a Wednesday and we got a high table by the window which is nice. By 6:30 the place was packed. Although I love their pizzas and the salad with the warm vegetables and goat cheese, we both decided to try the specials. My friend had the pasta which came with a pork bolognese with peas and cheese. So delicious and there was so much that he took half home. The only complaint with the pastas is that there is no bread in the side. You can order water bread or flatbread but it is way more than one person can eat so unless you have two people ordering pasta, so much goes to waste.
I ordered the pea soup which had ham and chicken with a mint sour cream and paper thin slices of radish on top. Soups here never disappoint. I also had the appetizer special which was plenty of food. A bed of rice with slices of avocado surrounded by pork sausage, spicy salsa, and micro greens with a creamy sauce on the side. My only complaint here is that it was slightly warm so I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be hot or not.
I always try the two wine features before I make my choice. A great way to try new selections.
It was busy and no, it's not a quiet Romaric atmosphere but the food and service are always great.

My husband and I arrived bright and early at 5 pm on a Friday and thank goodness we did, the place fills up very quickly. We were seated immediately and service was prompt. We had barely gotten our drinks when the server, very apologetically, asked if we might mind switching tables as there was another empty two seater adjacent and the possibility to seat a part of four if were to move. Of course it was no problem and we happily scooted over for the family. It was nothing to us but the server was so pleased she offered us a free dessert! Service like that is just one of the lovely features in our great experience.

The artichoke dip was good, but both of us found it lacked flavour. We almost enjoyed the flatbread more.
Our meals, however, were sublime. My husband enjoyed the curried steak of the day and it was so flavourful and tender. The basmati rice bed was a soft pillow of delight and I was almost jealous. My gnocchi with braised boneless short rib was so rich and delicious I would eat it nearly every day if it were a feasible (and healthier) option. The short rib was so tender I didn't once need to use the knife they had brought me. The gnocchi were perfect and not as heavy as I've had in the past. The cream sauce was divine. I'm so glad it's a regular menu item!
We chose the pear cobbler with vanilla iced cream for dessert and it was a treat for sure. I sometimes am sensitive to 'maple/caramel alternatives' which can give me a headache but had no problem with this. A lot of brown sugar and butter can make anything delicious but this dessert held its own without being heavy handed.

I will continue to tell people of my wonderful experience here and can't wait to enjoy it again. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant to anyone interested in a delicious meal with a home cooked feel.
Enjoy!

My girlfriend took me here for my birthday this week. We got there shortly after 5. Thank goodness because it filled up very fast. I have to say this is not a sit down, take your time and relax kind of place that we were hoping for. It's loud....very loud and difficult to hear or make conversation. I ordered the Italian sausage pizza and she had the mushroom spinach pizza. I have to say hers was a bit better then mine. Mine was soggy and cold when it came out so I asked to have it heated up. Which the waiter did and you could tell they took the time to put it in the pizza oven instead of a microwave. Nothing spectacular and I didn't eat my leftovers which is not a great sign. So not sure if I'd go back.

Went for an early dinner,(4:30) when we knew it would not be busy as we had 2 toddlers(who are well behaved in boosters and snacks). We phoned the day before to tell them 5 adults and 2 small children would be attending for a birthday celebration and inquired if that would be a problem. They assured us it was fine. When we arrived we were greeted with"well we don't really seat more than 6"I wanted to sit in the other room but we were led to the table at the front door. When asked for a high chair or booster seat they said they don't offer them.I explained we had phoned the previous day about this birthday gathering but that fell on deaf ears.If you are not children friendly then say so.Most uncomfortable gathering, should have left immediately.Food was OK

just ate here tonight, it was amazing! the waitress was awesome and the food was perfect. My wife and I both had the duck and it was cooked perfectly and the risotto with cheese croutons was soooo freaking good. the other couple with us had the lamb and whatever their cover photo dish is and both were delicious. we all had desert and a beer for around $200. i will for sure be going back again

Great pizza but long wait to get a table at this place. Server wasn't the most polite. Would go back because great pizza forsure. But maybe not at such a busy time.
Jeff Power
Pizzas and pastas are very good, parking is easy, and service is great. They have interesting specials as well. I just wish they took reservations, the last two times I've been we've had to wait for quite a while to get a table and there's no waiting area, just a cramped doorway.
Sally
This is one of my favourite places to go to in Winnipeg. I've tried the paella, the gnocchi, the mac n cheese and just recently the special, which was beef tenderloin medallions. Everything I've had from here has tasted great, the atmosphere and service is on point. I would definitely recommend Bonfire Bistro!
James Clark
I would rate this place a 5.0 if it weren't for the wait times to get a seat on the weekend. They don't take reservations, so it's difficulty to get a seat on the weekend for dinner. However, assuming you actually get seated, the food and service is significantly above expectations. The pizza is fantastic.
Cindy Lee Lowry
Pizzas and salads awesome! Great variety of pizzas! Service was spot on! The atmosphere was perfect location to catch up with old friends, thanks for a great night! When I am back home again I will definitely make a point of coming back !
Laura
Service was great, fast, didn't have to wait long to place an order. Wine selection was good, they had far more different salads than most italian restaurants would. My boyfriend and I stuck with the standard greek salad, which didn't skimp on cheese or kalamata olives, as most places might. We shared a margherita pizza which was delicious. Next time, we'll get our own pizzas rather than sharing one, because we found we were still hungry. We filled up on some Portugese water bread, and then shared an apple and pear crumble, which looked and tasted fantastic. We will be back, to try more things! There was a veggie pizza and a veg pasta dish that looked really tempting that I can't wait to try!
Wine And Dine Me
This is one of my favorite restaurants in Winnipeg. I have ordered off the menu and I've ordered their specials and have always been impressed with their fresh high quality meals. You will likely have to wait for a table but it's totally worth it.
Food Musings
Yesterday the “birthday girls” assembled to celebrate another year of the wonderful gift of life. At that time we decided that instead of trying to decide where to go for each birthday lunch, we would always meet at Bonfire Bistro. It is close to home for two of us and centrally located for the other two. The food is so affordable and always terrific. We typically make a later reservation when the lunch rush is done because we have a habit of laughing too loudly, talking all at once and lingering too long. The lovely staff does not seem to mind and I would imagine that they get a lot of behind the scenes work done while we wallow in each others company.
Eat. Run. Repeat.
Superb meals and desserts! My dad and I both had specials and were impressed with the interesting flavour pairings and world cuisine fusion. Also any place with dark chocolate crème brûlée is a winner to me! Don't be put off by the understated and slightly cheap looking decor; the food and service more than make up for it.

Great pizza, great service - easy to park, friendly open atmosphere - nice salads and lots of variety - recommend for casual family lunches or dinners.

Wow wow wow! Food was so fresh and best pizza in wpg by far. Service was amazing. Atmosphere was really nice. Only thing is we ordered a salad to eat before our pizza and it never showed up. But they took care of it and didn't charge us the salad for that mistake. Grade A service. We'll be back for sure with our friends!

Great little restaurant. A little bit of a wait but was worth it. Service was good and friendly and the food was awesome. I had the Mac and cheese and it was very filling, not greasy! which was a huge plus. Would recommend eating here.

Went there for the first time because we heard it was good! My boyfriend got the paella which was AMAZING! I tried it too and it tasted better than the one I had in Spain! I got something with a beef brisket in it that was really good! The unique menu is what draws me to go back! It's a little more expensive then regular restaurants but definitely worth it!! I cannot wait to go back

Wonderful meal in a delightful atmosphere. We arrived to find the expected crowd on a Friday night and were seated within 10 min which was an excellent surprise. We'd heard many good things from friends about Bonfire Bistro and we were not disappointed.
Ambiance: The restaurant layout and overall decor lends to a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. Menu specials are written on chalkboards with a printed menu at the table offering so many wonderful dishes. The restaurant is slightly cramped but what popular restaurant in Wpg isn't. We felt it was intimate for our group of 4 without feeling like we could hear the conversations of the tables beside us.
Staff: We were greeted promptly and warmly and as quickly as they could a table materialized for our 4-some. Staff was attentive all evening which was refreshing (that's one of my pet peeves - either too much checking on us or far too little).
Food: We ordered a few dishes but the ones that stand out for us were the Chicken Caesar salad and the Spicy La Bomba Chicken pizza. I know everyone does a Chicken Caesar but this one was mouth-watering, not too much garlic or blech fishiness. Chicken was wonderful cooked on top of the romaine greens blend and bacon croutons. The Spicy La Bomba Chicken pizza was even better. The highlight of the evening actually...until I got to dessert. I'm constantly on a quest for really great pizza and this was a good one. Thin crust fire roasted just the right amount of toppings...it all worked wonderfully. I highly recommend. If you have room for dessert...try the Banana Coconut gelato to fill in any remaining cracks in your fully satisfied belly.
Our friends had the Mediterranean Seabass which she really liked...it's a bit of a medley of flavours in a sauce. Seafood was offered several times on the menu and people all around us were enjoying those dishes. I'm a catch and release guy thus the twin chicken dishes.
Overall - we believe the hype and recommend Bonfire Bistro. If you go on a Friday night prepare to wait but it's all worth it.
(pics attached - pizza and seabass dishes)

Just ok. I ordered the spicy Hawaiian, for a pizza that's supposed to consist of ham and pineapple, there was VERY little pineapple. Service was pretty dismal. I can think of many other places with better pizza and service, we probably won't be back.
Perch
Very small portions !!!. I was recently at this restaurant and my date ordered lamb chops , 2 lamb chops , 1 brussel sprout and 2 sprigs of asparagus was on the plate for $ 30 , although they were tasty it was a total rip off , I mean 1 brussel sprout and 2 asparagus , not one potato or anything else -- we will not be back !!
Margaret Warner
Best salad ever.. The arugala ,goat cheese and pecan salad is outstanding. A great starter portion to share while you wait for the main course which for us was a pizza. Highly recommended the restaurant and the food.
WildRose08
Have been here 2x now & had a great experience both times. The pizza is fabulous & the staff is friendly and helpful. Parking is a bit of a challenge, but if you're nice to the 7-11 worker next door he'll let u park there w/out towing! Will def be dining @ Bonfire Bistro again!

Service was poor and slow. Food could have been better.

Yummy, quaint, local, seasonal, healthy and innovative!. A lovely surprise... quaint, local, seasonally-sourced, healthy and innovative restaurant.

Pros:
-see above
-outstanding, personalized service... the waitress was not only attentive to every need, seemed genuinely to love her job and customized my meal from three different items on the menu and did not charge me extra. She even made my friend happy by confirming the bacon was ethically sourced (with a wink, of course)
-comfortable, cozy atmosphere with specials written on a chalkboard (that night they had pork tenderloin, soups etc) and a fire oven in the corner... you can watch the chefs bake the pizzas!
-the food is outstanding... the menu varied, seasonal, local, healthy, simple but innovative and constantly changing from what I can see... plus, it tastes amazing!
-Bonfire Flatbread with hot spinach artichoke and parmesan spread: delicious, not your average doughy flatbread its more light and baked in their oven to give it more of a crunchy outside. The spreads (which were very generous) were piping hot and warm, melty goodness.
-Mixed Salad of baby field greens, red onion, currants, toasted pecans, balsamic vinaigrette and crostini; the crostini was plain and dry, but the salad was fresh and delicious, especially the currants and perfectly toasted pecans
-Fire-roasted vegetables were a mix of zucchini, mushrooms, tomatoes, onions and peppers which were well grilled, spiced and toasty warm. Never thought cold lettuce would go well with warm veggies, but it was delicious.
-Added spicy prawns to my salad (which was not an option on the menu, but is a pizza topping) which were out of this world... plump, sweet meat perfectly grilled and well spiced (not just your generic hot sauce heat) with a thin glaze.
-Wild Mushroom & Maple Bacon Pizza had garlic spread and blue cheese which brought out the flavor of the perfectly cooked mushrooms. Even my friend who doesn't love mushrooms liked these. The crust is perfectly baked and thin, but not too crunchy.
-Margherita Pizza: I don't know who Carlo is, but he makes amazing tomato sauce!
-Nice wine selection
-Great value for the price!!!

Cons:
-Parking can be tricky on busy nights
-We weren't offered dessert, and so I'm pretty sure they don't serve it. Sad because I was hoping after such an excellent meal they might have even better dessert... but I guess they are sticking to what they know. Its commendable that they can admit their weaknesses and not bother ruining their otherwise amazing menu. And I got to keep the night going by heading to another dessert place anyway!
-Close at 10:30pm which can be a little early sometimes.
-The restaurant is very small... maybe 10 tables and a bar area, which makes for nice ambience (it wasn't noisy at all, in fact, since there was no loud music and quiet conversation with a bustling kitchen which was nice) but I can see having to wait for a bit on busy nights

Overall, I can't say enough good things and will definitely be back. Took a gamble on a new place and it definitely paid off. I can't wait to try the Cioppino and see what other specials they come up with.
Luder99
Don't argue with me about wine.. We enjoy lovely meals here and tonight no different. (Cioppino was excellent). However, ordered a bottle of wine and a inferior product was delivered, and served. When questioned the staff informed this was the updated version, it wasn't! I asked to change and informed they "were uncomfortable" to do this. After discussion they did. This resulted in lack of service followed by being ignored. Wont rush to return.

Pasta perfection. We went for a birthday dinner to Bonfire Bistro and were impressed with the appys, not complicated but tasty, and we tried 4 different pastas, each was excellent. Service was great, and we will be going back.
Dianaorban
Dinner Out. Went here for the first time. Food was very good. I had the manicotti and the hubby had the pickerel. Both meals were hot and very tasty. Over all the evening was great, not to pricey , nice atmosphere but the one thing that turned me off was the servers were in flip flops and some had tank tops on. I have been in the hospitality industry forever and it is not cool for people to see your feet or have armpits serve you. That being said I would go back again.
Matt
Okay pie, but eat it at home. Bottom line: The pizza was nothing to wrote home about

Found the main area of the restaurant to be a little loud and very plain atmosphere wise. I wouldn't take a date here.

We tried the Hawaiian and Spicy pepperoni pizzas. The pepperoni was the tastier of the two; both had ample toppings and a thinner crust. Neither were spicy and the Hawaiian was sort of bland aside from the cilantro sprinkled on it. Service was prompt and friendly, I wouldn't order pizza there again. A similar disappointing taste experience to that of Corrientes. However all the non-pizza dishes at other tables looked to be worth trying.
R.K.
Meh?. It was good, but...that's it...it was good. I ordered the Mac and Cheese and it was terrible. There are chunks of ham that go into it and it tasted like they made the mac and cheese and then poured hot ham water over it. The noodles were watery and there was no cheese taste whatsoever. All I could taste was ham and hot water. It was very disgusting. Having said that, I would go back to try one of their pizzas and they sounded and looked amazing.

Thank you Alexa. On August 7/14 we had a birthday party at Bonfire Bistro (Corydon Ave.) - service was excellent, food was delicious, the bill was very reasonable, the waitress Alexa was friendly & very efficient. We definitely will be back - thank you Alexa for making our party of 6 so enjoyable.

Must have been a bad night. Her paella tasted like liquid smoke bottle went over way heavy. My spicy chicken bonfire pizza was bland. The appetizer bread and dip was great, but meal went downhill from there. Oh, and piping straight ub40 was a little punishing.
Megan Gyles
Good food. Not a fan of the no liquor (only beer and wine) list.
Holerc
I'll call it excellent. The walk up to the restraunt is fantastic, got that wood smoke smell just spilling out of the oven. Love the restraunt set up in side, super chill. Pizza is good, not great like I was expecting. Best mac and cheese in the city hands down. It was absolutely fantastic.
Sammu J
This is not a bad restaurant. Better then most. If you want a consistently pretty okay food this is a fitting choice.

Perhaps does not live up to the hype
Rainn Willson
I've been here several times, had pizza, pasta and salad and never been disappointed or had a bad experience. The food is always delicious and service is quick and friendly. My favourites are probably the Hawian pizza and the Italian Sausage pizza. I'll keep coming back here, that's for sure.
Fruitsaladyummyyummy
I love this place. The best bruschetta in Winnipeg, hands down. Everything I've tried there is delicious. It's artsy but not pretentious at all.
Lestardiff
Wrong order times three. Why is it that three times I've gone to Bonfire Bistro and three times they 've gotten our order wrong. I mean it's only pizza and salad, how hard can it be? I have friends that swear by this place but my wife and I dine out every Saturday night as a treat and the kids stay home and order pizza. We'd be better off ordering pizza from home, it would be half the price, better pizza and they would probably get our order right! Three strikes you're out. Sorry Bonfire you're food is good but allergies are an important thing to pay attention to.

Excellent food. Recently went on a Wednesday night for dinner and had the beet/goat cheese salad and the mushroom/ham pizza. Excellent.

So. goddamn. good.. EVERYTHING I've had has been absolutely delicious, thoughtfully prepared, and fantastic. I've said many times, that with some overhauling to decor, a more intimate atmosphere, and improvements and focus on service, they could charge double what they currently do for their dishes. VERY reasonably priced, and always great. The service is fairly lackluster.
Hannah M
Hawaiian and spicy chicken pizzas are great. Very flavorful and spicy, unique. Not your traditional pizza joint, but very good. Caesar salad is always great and desserts are too!
Joanna Wyszynski
I am extremely confused on why this place is getting good reviews. First off they only serve wine in wrong wine glasses. I'm a bit of a wine connesseur therefore when I order red or white wine I expect it to come in the proper size glass it belongs in. Secondly the food was mediocre. Nothing special. Nothing out of the ordinary. And thirdly the decor in the part of the restaurant where the bar is is horrid. The way the tables are placed are awkward. This restaurant needs modern or rustic tables and chairs. Their tables and chairs and not nice.

It's Ok Pizza. Had the pizza as well as the clam chowder soup. Server mixed up my pizza with another diner at the table. We didn't realize till the last bites. It was ok but nothing spectacular.

-----05 Dec, 2013-----

It's Ok. Had the pizza as well as the clam chowder soup. Server mixed up my pizza with another diner at the table. PIZZA!. I'm not a huge pizza eater, but this pizza rocks from here. I usually get the Magherita pizza. It's great! It's definitely one of the best.

Try the Pizza!. Tried the shrimp pizza -- LOVED IT. The shrimp mixed with the lemon jelly and sriracha sauce, while an odd-sounding combination, is a tasty treat for the palate.

Great service, great food, nice atmosphere.

Beets. The beet salad is really nice

Food is good enough but the service is absolutely terrible. I have eaten there several times and every time have had to wait at least 5 minutes for someone to even acknowledge me. Even when it's slow and I see a constant stream of staff walking by; no one ever greets you.
Deliciousfoodomg
To die for. We ordered the special feature pizza and it WAS AMAZING. i dont know if they still have it, but man, it was delicious. the flavours were popping. the only thing i didn't like was the burnt crust, but im not the fan of crust anyway, and it was cooked in those fire ovens or whatever so ya.. thats okay

we had the bread and artichoke dip, which i was also a fan of.

the service was a little slow, but the food truly makes up for it. if i didnt live so far, or if wasnt so broke (its expensive here), then id go here every weekend. perfect date place too.

Perfect to eat-in or take-out!. I've been here numerous times over the last year or two both to eat-in as well as to pick up take-out lunch (as I work in the neighborhood). Every time it has been wonderful. I usually get the half pizza of the day with side salad at lunch. They offer a daily meat & vegetarian option.
I took a friend there for dinner one evening a couple months ago. We showed up right when they opened as we knew they do not take reservations.. We split a large Caesar salad & a pizza and it was the perfect amount of food for the two of us. We finished every bite, but just barely.

Yum, yum, yum! We could not decide what we wanted because everything sounded amazing on the menu so we went with the beet and goat cheese salad, the Mac and cheese and the spicy pepperoni pizza. Each dish was better then the last. I'm sure they could not disappoint with anything on their menu.

Highly Recommended. If you enjoy fresh inventive food, go there. It's not pretentious and once inside you will find the atmosphere to be very cozy. Wood fired pizzas and wonderful pasta dishes are some of the highlights. Salads ( in articular the beet salad) is also a great dish.

Favorite Restaurant. My boyfriend and I frequent Bonfire Bistro regularly, and it has become our "go-to" restaurant for date nights.

After trying many items on the menu, we now seem to order the same things when we go (unless there is a special that catches our interest).

The Caprese Salad is unreal. The ingredients are SO fresh, and the portion is huge. We always share this salad as a starter.

As an Antipasti, we always order the flatbread with roasted red pepper and feta spreads. Delicious! And the presenation is nice too (last time we ordered it, the couple sitting next to us saw it, and immediately flagged down the waitress to order it themselves!)

We always order their pizza. I have had coal-fired pizza in virtually every restaurant in the city that offers it, and hands-down, Bonfire Bistro is #1. What makes their pizza the best is the flavour. They don't skimp on the toppings either. The crust is always a perfect "not-too-thin" or "not-too-thick" perfectly coal-fired. We ALWAYS have the Spicy La Bamba Chicken pizza. It's absolutely amazing!

If you haven't tried this restaurant - you must!

The food is amazing. I had the Hawaiian pizza and the bruschetta for a starter. All the ingredients were fresh and cooked perfectly. This restaurant is absolutely one of my favourites in the city!

Great Place!. Great Thin Crust Pizza and friendly service!

Had a very lovely lunch with my mom on Saturday. I had not been before and I thought the place might be pretentious. It is very airy feeling subside and the staff is very friendly. It wasn't very busy so can't judge if the place would be a noisy atmosphere or not. We shared the mixed greens salad with the roasted veggies and goat cheese on the side as my mom is not a fan of the taste. I have to say the cheese was probably one of the best I've had; it was very creamy and didn't have any sourness. My mom can't do too much spice but the spicy Hawaiian pizza was calling my tummy. The server said that everyone's palates are different but she'd rank the spiciness as a 3; we asked for no jalapeño. After I started eating I knew mom wouldn't be able to handle the pizza it was too spicy for her but I loved it. The leftovers came home and were re-heated for supper and enjoyed the second time. I'd say give the place a try.

This a consistently good spot that is worth the wait. I recently had a shrimp pizza with sundries tomatoes and lemon juice that was the best pizza I've ever had!!

Class experience from top to bottom. I really love the energy that goes into the food at Bonfire Bistro. I can always appreciate the artistry applied to every dish that I almost feel guilty eating it... but than I do. This is one top notch restaurant. Love it!

Great date night. Appie spinach dip is fresh and tasty. We share a pizza and seafood dill linguine that was really great. Prices are reasonable and a cozy place to grab eats.
Chris
Lovely food. Had dinner service..foods.. everything was excellent.

Quality. I've only ever ordered the specials when I eat at Bonfire Bistro but they are always good. Lack of cocktails is a bit disappointing but I'd rather have a beer then a bad drink. Portions are great. Tons of Flavor. A great value. Busy nights mean you might have to wait but it's worth it.

Novemeber 2012: Good Little Bistro. I went with here with my girlfriend last night for a nice dinner. The place is very simple in decor when you walk in but it looks nice. I called a couple hours before to make a reservation and they took my name down. When I arrived they assured me that I didn't make a reservation as they don't take them. They said that sometimes a man with a residential number similar to theirs takes reservations as a joke but I spoke to a female. Oh well... We were early and the place was not full, but if this would have been during there busy time it could have made for a bad experience. However, no issues, and we were seated. The server brought us water and grabbed us a couple beers. I also ordered the flat bread with hummus and a feta and roasted red pepper spread. When that arrived, it was a generous portion and tasted great. It is a great appetizer to start the meal off with because it is flavourful yet light enough to keep you hungry for the rest of your supper. My girlfriend then proceeded to order the spicy prawn pizza while I ordered the paella. They arrived and both were delicious. The first bite of my paella caught me off guard as it was full of saffron, but very tasty. It is a smaller portion for $23 but it is full of goodies. There is a ton of prawns, scallops, and chorizo in it as well as other vegetables and seafood. I prefer this as I can't eat that much rice anyways and would prefer more protein. My girlfriends pizza was top notch. The preserved lemon flavour really made it pop in your mouth and it had a lot of prawns on it. I was worried they would put too much Sriracha sauce on it but they put the perfect amount on. I was really happy with our meals. The server was nice and friendly. She was a little on the quiet side but that was fine. All in all it was a great experience at Bonfire. The only request I have for an improvement is for them to please keep the curtains closed that surround the door. There are curtains there to keep the cold from the opening door out while people come and go, however, they were open all night resulting in a very cold restaurant. I had to keep my jacket on the whole meal and I like being cold. However, do not let this detract from the positive review I gave. Bonfire is a nice place to eat.

July 2016: Returned to bonfire bistro for another lovely evening. This time we visited blew the first time out of the water. This is an amazing place to eat. The food is great. I would have to rate this place among my favourite places to eat in Winnipeg. My only complaint is that they don't have a patio. Otherwise A+++.

Unpretentious food, unpretentious prices. This place has it all. Paella is amazing..will return, will dropy cash. Well done bonfire bistro.

Move on. Cold seafood pasta served by inattentive and exasperating waitress when asked questions. Overpriced and I felt like an idiot standing in the middle of the room looking at the menu board of items not listed elsewhere. There are other overpriced places to eat - the room was cold - turn up the heat! And it was a weekday dinner. I spent over $50.00... if you want a certain clientele and are serving cream brule than spice up the rest of your restaurant....waitresses wearing jeans?? Did I mention ...cold pasta...yech!
Gail
I love it here! The thin crust pizza is the best I've ever had. I can't remember which one i ordered but it had a lemon sauce to drizzle over top of it. Delicious!

Delicious Clams & Pizza. We came here for dinner and ordered: the clams appetizer, the clam and seafood pasta, and the butter chicken pizza. All 3 items were so amazing. The sauce in the clam appetizer was great and creamy. The seafood pasta was delicious. The butter chicken pizza really stood out to be quite unique...it is a definite must-try! The portions at this restaurant were pretty generous for the price. The only thing I would recommend is to have some complementary bread for the table before the meal. Overall, great place, great food, and great service!

Bad experience. I have eaten at this restaurant many, many times and admittedly have always enjoyed the food, but the lineups are often extremely long at peak hours. For this reason we usually go very early (around 5:30 for dinner at the latest) to avoid the lines. The other day my wife and I were meeting my Dad for dinner there, and we were running about 5 minutes late. However, my Dad was there on time and was given a table immediately. In the next few minutes a lineup accumulated at the front door, so the host approached my Dad who was already sitting down, and told him he had to get up and give up his table for other people. He asked to use their phone to call me to see how long we were going to be, but they made him give up the table anyways. We arrived almost immediately after this, and were told there was now a 30-45 minute wait for a table. I don't think I have ever experienced such rude service at a restaurant in my life, especially at a restaurant that I go to all the time.

My only advice to this restaurant is that having a lineup at your door all the time doesn't mean you should treat your loyal customers so poorly. We will probably never go back.

Great Place!. I recently discovered this restaurant and have since been back a few times. Each time I've been the place has been full and I have yet to be disappointed with my meal choices - great pizza's!
Robert
Excellent. Wonderful - had the pizza and I have to admit, it was the 1st time I had a pizza that was scrumptious and left me very contented but not bloated..kudos

Deelish.. Friendly service. quickly seated.
Already had our orders in mind, but server was very intuitive and quick with her recommendations and what would most likely compliment our choices. Polite intrusions when refilling drinks and asking if our meals are fine. Great little place. Great food. :)
Sarah
Great pizza!. Very good pizza, the ceasar salad was just okay same with the clam and chorizo . the tall female server we had really seemed like she would rather be anywhere but there though, could have been a lot nicer.

Very Good Pizza. Nice little place very busy early evening. Ordered the side Greek salad and Hawaiian pizza. Great food quiet service. Enjoyed the food.

Nice little restaurant. You have to get there a bit early because that small restaurant fills up pretty quickly. The staff was friendly and the food was good. It was a bit weird sitting down to have a meal at a bar like table, but regardless, that doesn't affect the taste of the food :)

Great every time. My friends and I and wife have been atleast 5 times since dicovering about a year ago
and we all agree Bonfire is our favorite. Always amazing food and service.

Yummy Pizzas. I went there last night with my husband and our friends and their little girl. I agree with the other reviews that the restuarant is small and do not allow for reservation. We got seated pretty quickly (although I have say we got there at 6pm). The service itself was very slow but the pizzas were great. I had the their special of the day and love it. We each ordered different types of pizzas and we all seem to have a great time. Our friend's little girl wanted a "cheese bread" and the waitress got the hint and made the cheese pizza for her and called it a cheese bread. The restaurant is not really for kids, but they do really well in accommodating the circumstances.

We also had dessert. Their lemon meringue pie is to die for.

Stuff your mom could make if she was a superhero.. They don't take reservations, unless its Valentine's day. So you better get there early, because we got there at six on a Friday and had to wait a half hour! No complaints here, though, you can tell its just a well-loved place... and you can see why! Right now, they have their Summertime Sangria on for 6.75 a glass, and it it just yummy. Their waiters are friendly and knowledgable, and the food... the food is fantastic.

You know how at some restaurants, the food is amazing, but its so waaaay out there? Things you would never make yourself in a million years? Well, at Bonfire Bistro, its stuff your mom could make you, just a thousand times better. I had the pasta special, Linguine with Lobster Tail, prawns, grilled corn, tomatoes in a lobster cream sauce. Absolutely delicious, and had a home-cooked feel to it. For dessert? Apple pear crumble. Like I said, stuff your mom could make... just a thousand times better.

Had the pizza which was great. Atmosphere was ok, expecting more. Good place though.

Love it. Food, drink, atmosphere are all top-notch. Been here twice, they have some of the most interesting and flavourful pizzas in the city. Beer selection is good, wine selection looks decent, they don't have hard alcohol though. Anyways, 5 stars.
Andrew
Very Good. This place is awesome. Order the paella and come hungry!

Delicious.. We went here to mark one of those small special occasions that don’t mean anything to anyone else but which require a small celebration. I had the cioppino which was all savory and herby and delicious, and served with Portuguese water bread to mop up the sauce. My companion, who loves pasta dishes, predictably had one of the pasta dishes which was very good. We each had dessert, mine was a crème brulee and his was bananas foster; they were good enough but not outstanding. Service was good even though it was filled when we were there. The tables are a little too close together for lingering in comfort but it depends where you get seated, some had more room. I look forward to going back and trying their pizza.

Very good, overall. I took my mother there yesterday for her birthday. Everything lived up to my expectations for the most part. Service was good and attentive. Their wine selection was nice too. Food wise, the PEI muscles were divine! The water bread the came with it was so delicious because it had such a smoky wood-oven taste to it, perfectly complimenting the white sauce on the muscles. The paella was very good as well, my mother loved it very much, every bite had either chorizo, shrimp, scallop, muscles or chicken so they were certainly not skimpy with the proteins. My linguine tasted excellent as well. My only complaint about it was that even though the menu had described the sauce as "lemon dill", it lacked that dill flavour. My pasta was a bit on the dry side and I like my pasta al dente. My mom did order the soup of the day and wasn't impressed with it at all. It lacked flavour and just didn't live up to par. I can't remember the name but it was vegetarian (with eggs, spinach, tomatoes...) Overall a great experience though. I will definitely come back for the yummy looking pizzas!

Expensive. A bit too eclectic for me. Definately worth the trip. I'll be bach.

Great food, good service, good atmosphere. We had the bonfire flatbread with hot spinach artichoke and parmesan spread, the wild mushroom pizza and the mac and cheese. The flatbread and spread was absolutely delicious. We ordered the wild mushroom pizza because I LOVE mushrooms but it was a bit overpowered by the woody mushroom taste. It had a really good sauce though and the pizza crust was great. The mac and cheese was just ok.

I would definitely come back here.

Yet to have bad dish. Been a few times due to proximity to my home, and loved it every time! It may be on the smaller scale for eat-in, but is cozy enough to enjoy your meal without feeling crammed. One of the few places that has a wood fire oven... And honestly if you didn't feel like eating pizza before going in there... You will want one once your in there. From pizza, to pasta, to bruschetta... Everything tastes like was made with care and not just another cookie-cutter quantity based dish.
Trish
We were at Bonfire last night, packed as usual!!! : ) The tenderloin is perfect, not sure if the tenderloin complainers from last night know what their talking about? I'm not a food snob, and I'm also not an idiot ! I've been eating this dish for years, and it gives any tenderloin in the city a run for it's money!!! And the spinach linguine, are you mad? Another great dish, infact one of my friends had it last night and we all had a taste of her pasta...BECAUSE IT WAS SOOO GOOD. Bonfire is so busy for a reason. Thank you Bonfire Team for another great meal, fun, casual atmosphere. We always feel welcome...your Regulars love you! (some people like to complain, it's a power thing )

Great Pizza. Went to Bonfire Bistro mid February. We had the caesar salad to start, thought it was really good. We shared 2 entrees, first the mac and cheese dish which was very average, nothing special. The second entree was the hawaiian pizza which was fantastic. The wine was priced very reasonable. The chocolate cake (can't remember exact name) for dessert was good, but nothing extraordinary ... almost like a microwaved Costco chocolate muffin. Would go back for the pizza.
Food Is Good
Food was good, service poor. We've been there a couple of times. The first time it was great, we had lunch and it was really enjoyable. the 2nd time...the service was pretty poor. it wansn't so much the lack of service as it was the attitude and manorisms of the waitress. The food, however was once again great. i would still return adn recommend, if your looking for a good lunch at a decent price!
