Review Desiam Thai Restaurant - Whitby

The food is super good! We received great service. The menu was full of all my favourite dishes and more. Great prices for large portion sizes. The server was very helpful and friendly. This is great place to bring a group for dinner. Restaurant has a relaxing environment and a nice patio. They also have UberEats set up as of today! I highly recommend this place.

Great Pad Thai! My favourite dish here. The portions are really big, and the personnel is very gentle. Totally recommended!

The food at Desiam never disappoints it's always fresh and hot on order. I highly recommend the new coconut wings they have a sweet bite at first but then a spicy kick to them as you keep eating them. The red curry rice, pad Thai, mango salad and rolls are fantastic too. The other chicken wings are so good I love the Tamarind ones as well as they are unique and not found anywhere else. The owner James is very friendly and has no problem accommodating your needs. I love eating here and recommend it often to family and friends.

I've been going to good life there for 3 years now, decided to stop in and grab a menu. The owner/cook offered to make me coconut chicken, for free! I asked for a large size and I'll pay he refused and made me a large size for no cost so I also purchased Thai chicken (which was amazing) and he brought me food to eat while waiting for my order. Such great service and amazing food. I'm definitely coming back and more than happy I stopped in.

I recently went here for my friends birthday and we all had an incredible experience. The service was warm and the food was amazing. Once the owner found out we were there for my friends birthday, he gave us all coconut crusted wings and dessert on the house! After dinner, we stayed and chatted with the owner about his passion for creating quality food. Such a nice guy! If you're waiting a little bit longer for your food, it's because he's making it from scratch with no MSG added. Truly impressed by this place and I can't wait to go back! Shoutout to the waiter as well!

Authentic and good price dinner! I would encourage anyone to try this restaurant. This was the second time I had gone to the restaurant for dinner. The first time I went, I was invited by a family of foodies to go try this place. Anywhere they recommend, I would try. The food and service were excellent so I decided to stop in again while I was in the area. The second time, the chef came out and spoke to us, asking us what we thought about the food and if he could make it any better. We even received a free mango salad, which was very refreshing for that hot day we stopped by. The restaurant is a little hard to find if you have never been before but it is worth it.

Been coming here for years, since 2008, and the food is always amazing! The restaurant is cozy and full of Thai culture. There seems to be more items on the menu, despite its smaller size. Only ever been here for lunch, so can't comment on the dinner experience.

Were looking forward to a meal for the first time from Desiam as friends said their food was so good. Put order in for delivery at 6:25. Site says 40-60 minutes for delivery. At the 85 minute mark we phoned and were told that the order was on the way. Didn't arrive 15 minutes later. Phoned again and was told it would be there soon. After 1 hour and 45 minutes phoned to cancel the order and was told "Sorry about that my Friend". Never had service like this before with living in Whitby 14 years! From anywhere! Not even an offer for a discount!

Ordered delivery off the online menu only to be surprised that the prices online do not match the prices being charged. The manager claims a service handles it and they've requested the menu be updated but it hasn't - instead of advising people who call in they just charge whatever price. We ordered Mango Salad (mediocre at best) Pad Thai (flavour was ok) Ginger Beef (beef pieces were too large, unclean - full of tough tendons) and Tom Yum soup (flavor was lack luster). They charge 10.99 for small containers of the soup (the menu online specified 5.99) and claim because they put 3 jumbo shrimp (they weren't even that jumbo) it justifies such a high cost for soup and you won't get that quality of shrimp other places - let me tell you not only do most places use the exact same shrimp (Thai Delicious, Spring Rolls) they charge way less and the soup tastes better. I've eaten at several dozen Thai restaurants in Toronto and in Whitby and have had more authentic flavours than this place. Will not be eating here again.

I had previously gone there once, a long time ago with my sister. I didn't remember much from the meal at the time but my sister said that the Pad Thai was amazing....Their menu was very large with tons of options so it took us a while to look through everything...We started with a Kanuck Roll as an appetizer. It was really hot upon arrival and stuff with ground chicken and various vegetables inside. I really enjoyed the filling, it had a good mix of ingredients inside almost like Sheppard's pie.

Best Thai food outside of Thailand. This place is my fave restaurant! It is also the closet to real thai food you will get outside of Thailand. The atmosphere is nice, the service is decent and its inexpensive and fun place to go with a group and order an array of dishes to share.

True Thai Food served Here. This is a genuine Thai owned, Thai cooked Thai restaurant.
First Impressions, This is well hidden amongst many store is a pleasant surprise. Upon entering your bombarded by a wave of clean spice lofting in the air. Your surrounded by neat little Asian trinkets and Thai art including as most genuine Thai places will have a photo shrine to the royalty of Thailand.
As i often do i tested the cook, as i am shameless. And was well surprised with a fresh order of Som Tum. The cook is also owner and came out and sat with me as I discussed my love of her food. She is a very pleasant and wonderful host.
Visits: well over 30
Atmosphere: (Tables recently renovated with what i call disco black sparkles)
But the place is filled with neat trinkets and asian flare. Some small things need updating but easily overlooked. Clean. 8.5/10
Service: When they are busy it can be a wait, since they don't staff properly for rush. 7.5/10
Food: Genuine Thai (with exception, Thai ice tea is no longer the real deal but a Nes-tea product) 9/10

Suggestions,
If you can get them to make you a green papaya salad "Sum Tom" You are in luck for an amazing treat.
Otherwise go for Mango Salad and split it between you and a friend, Followed by a Mello yellow curry or whatever curry you would prefer. It is truly the best I have found in Canada so far.
Oh and maybe if we are all lucky maybe she will start carrying Pumpkin Thai Custard again.

Okay food and terrible service. The food was okay but to give them credit where it’s due everyone else in my party enjoyed their food so I wouldn’t want anyone basing an opinion on this place just on my review. The issue I have is after multiple mistakes:

1) Steamed rice was not brought out with my entrée which was so late that I just ended up eating my meal without any rice. Subsequent to eating my last bite of the meat dish I ordered the owner brought the rice out and almost looked confused as to why “I didn’t want to eat plain rice”. She then took the rice away as if it was my fault for not waiting 15 mins for a simple bowl of plain rice to eat with my meat dish. She later returned and in a tone that implied she was doing me a favour “I won’t charge you $1.99 for the rice”.

2) Obviously because of the above incident I put $0 for tip. Everyone else on the table paid their gratuities. She asked me why I didn’t tip and I told her I wasn’t thrilled with the service and left it at that. She proceed to borderline motion with a pen and receipt to change the tip amount and I was so flabbergasted that I was almost inclined to take the pen and receipt and change the tip. Once I was jarred awake from the awkward situation I said “no” and she left it at that.

Again to give this place credit the food seems decent and I did come here once almost 2 years ago and my wife and I loved it. They did accommodate us bringing our own birthday cake which was great until the waitress came over and asked us if we were ready for the cake and started passing plates down pretty much wrecking the surprise for my wife. All in all I wouldn’t go back.

Oh, Desiam. A favourite spot in Whitby. I've been visiting this place for 5 years or so and it is excellent and very consistent. It is a family owned business and they are actually from Thailand. How much more authentic can you get??
