Review The Captain's Boil - Waterloo

Omas Abdullah
After looking through the reviews it seems like I experienced what many others did. Two main things stand out: good food and poor service. 1. Food quality: I think of all of the sea food places this has to be one of the best in KW. All of the mains have tasted great. Some of the dishes may be quite spicy, but that doesn't take away from the fact that the food itself is very good. 2. Poor Service: This is something that I have noticed in many comments where we rarely saw our server come to us, we always had to flag them down. We had sat for almost 15 minutes before we had to call our server to let them know we were ready to order. After receiving our food/drinks, our server did not make sure we received all of our food. Upon realizing we were missing some items we needed to call our server over to ask for what was missing. I believe in the 2 hours our family was seated, our server approached us twice, meanwhile we needed to call our server over about 4 times (5 if you include me needing to walk to the counter to pay the bill). It bothers me to have a high price point to receive great food but poor service. However if you are a die hard seafood fan I would still recommend going at least once.

So I've wanted to come here for quite some time now and it's just never happened, so when all signs pointed towards being here for dinner tonight, I was more than thrilled! Is it gonna live upto the hype? Have I possibly raised my expectations so much that I'm gonna be disappointed??.... HHHEEELLZZZZNNNOOOO!! ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL! To start off, there free parking just down the street, so totally bonus. Then you walk in and the atmosphere is so good, modern with sailor flair. Super clean. And the greeting by the hostess was perfect, super friendly with a huge smile, very inviting. So now to the food. Pretty simple. Pick your catch (by the pound), pick your spice, and pick your heat level. Fave spice? That's a tough one as all 4 are amazing, but certain ones go better with certain picks. Found the captains boil on the shrimp with a medium heat to be the fave for shrimp. Clams, only tried them with the lemon pepper but so not disappointed, amazing. The muscles with the garlic spice was perfect, had to get 2 more pounds of that, easy. Got the crawfish, but only once to try and was definitely disappointed. Mind you I've never had them before so it was an interesting experience, but barely got through, they're all shell with almost no meat. So not worth the effort needed to get that tiny bit of meat out. The fresh oysters were to die for, wow so good. And for drinks we got vodka Caesars with a bottle of Soju on the side. You must! Poured half in each of our drinks, made the Caesars sssooo much better (and stronger). The entire experience was amazing. After ordering enough shrimp, clams, oysters, muscles, and crawfish to absolutely stuff 2 people, drinks to get a nice buzz on, the bill came to around $150. And we got to hangout after and sip away and chat. Amazing experience! If you love seafood, or even just like it a bit, this is the place to go! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 5 star rating, easily! I do have one beef with this place. And it's not the food or the service. It's the plastic bags. The food comes out in large thick plastic bags. And I can only assume they are not cleaning and recycling these bags but going right into the trash. And that's a dammmmm shame! I'll have to enquire if they are a compostable type and edit this post accordingly when I get the answer.

Okay, I ordered two mugs of beer of their special “Sapporo” something they did not have that, so I had to order same old fashion “Corona” which is ok. But they did not have variety in beers section limited choices... then we ordered fish n chips though fries were way more than the fish... serving in a bowl with two sauces in tiny cups which makes it little awkward as its not a “corner shop” ; should have served in a better way. We were two but did not give us separate plates... first we tried to sit at the front but a person from staff said its reserved but we did not see any reserved sign over there then he moved us to back... surprisingly it was not reserved for someone but its a reserved area... I literally did not get that in my mind. And he then adjusted the furniture for just two of us... a large sheet of paper was there on the tables which is understandable. So that customers does not make a mess and staff just pick it with whole of left overs and put in bin... but that is so boring hides the furniture... no music in there. It looks nice from outside but it was actually not as per the standards. Overall 2.5 stars...

Food was good, okra a bit hard. The server forgot our ites ordered on 3 occasions and we had to ker reminding her for each item. Service ruined the experience. Typical good for geoups, casual dining. The fast food of seafood!

Had one of the best seafood meals I have had in a very long time. While I am a huge fan of the lobster normally, this lobster was not the prime eat that you get when you normally have lobster. The flavor was good but the texture was a little off and rubbery. The remedy to the slight rubberiness of the lobster was the phenomenal flavor, texture, and seasoning of the captain's boil crab legs. The house seasoning in combination with the medium heat was the perfect setup for the crab legs. When you add on top of this the fact that you eat with your hands... The experience itself is something you have to try at least once... and you will probably try it multiple times to be honest.

A great place for groups. We all got a "boil bag" of seafood. It got really messy really quickly. The Captain Boil's sauce was tasty and flavourful on its own. Though I found it actually overpowering and drowned out the delicate flavours of the seafood. The crawfish were tiny and hard to eat but it was my first time eating crawfish so it was kind of fun. They cut the lobster in half so it was fairly manageable. The Seafood Fried Rice was alright too, uses the same Captain Boil sauce, $10.95 for a very decent portion. Since the place just opened, we all got 10% off on our bill. Also, it's worth noting that the crawfish and lobster are fresh from British Columbia :D EDIT: Later in the day and into the following day, a few of us got an upset stomach and diarrhea. Though the rest of us were fine.

Overall experience summed up best by my 5 year old: "Abe Erb is nearby and they have forks and plates." Seafood quality: average - poor, Dining experience for a family with kids: very poor - yeah we are ok to get hands dirty but all food served in single-use plastic bags and no plates or cutlery. Sustainability: Horrible! This restaurant uses tons of single-use plastic bags, can't recycle them because they can't separate out the food waste enough to be recycled. They want to create the experience of a backyard seafood boil but what you actually get is just tons of waste, mess and chaos that isn't worth their price point given the mediocre food quality. The only thing deserving 3+ stars is the wait staff. They were very nice.

employees are really nice. The portions are huge and you can customize your meal in so many different ways! There are plenty of options and you will never leave with an empty stomach.

Last night was my first time at this restaurant, also any restaurant like it. My boyfriend and I ordered the shrimp with captains boil seasoning, snow crab legs with garlic seasoning, and the mussels with the lemon and black pepper seasoning. We started with the Cajun fries which were amazing, and then the seafood. It all came in great time, and it was all very well cooked and seasoned. The garlic seasoning was to die for on the snow crab legs. The wait staff were extremely nice, and when the waiter found that it was out first time there, he explained the menu and gave recommendations very well. Our waters were always topped up. Once our meal was finished, they brought over a complementary dessert. I have no idea why, but it was very appreciated! The meal cost $58 and change. For 3lbs of sea food and fries, it filled up both my boyfriend and I (both good eaters) and did not break the bank. Overall, we will absolutely be coming back and bringing friends. The food was not only very well done, but its extremely fun to eat it with your hands. Prepare to get messy!

I'm a huge fan of Louisiana style food, and Captains boil didn't disappoint! I loved the fact that you have to eat with your hands (that's how it's done in the south btw) and the washing station is an amazing idea! The server was so friendly and made sure to explain the concept of the restaurant not once, but twice! I highly recommend the Captains boil seasoning for your food, it was amazing, as was the shrimp fried rice that we ordered.

Great atmosphere, fresh seafood however we found it over seasoned.. garlic overtook the great taste of scallops and mussels!! Would prob go just butter next time and garlic on the side

Best seafood in town! They offer fresh seafood, great flavour options, the steam cooking makes this place a unique experience for the whole family. Please check out this treasure.

Good food, over seasoned it’s fine, i love seafood not sire why people don’t like to serve the food in plastic bags, obviously you have seen where you are going. So why you are complaining . IF YOU ARE NOT ASEAFOOD LOVER Do not bother to go.

The foods were good. But the way the mussels, crab and shrimp put in the plastic not on plates were not inviting to eat. The servers were not hat courteous.

Too many rules and stipulations. It's not about the customer it's about them. Btw folks, some people like a knife and fork.
