Review Mexican House Of Spice - Victoria

Jennifer Dempsey
A lovely shop with a huge variety of Mexican and South American products! I came in to get some frozen passion fruit and found out about some amazing other tropical fruits that are like different types of passion fruit. The shop keeper was so helpful and friendly. I’m Looking forward to trying all the new things I purchased.

Great products you can't find anywhere else!

Sells Mexican spices and other spices that are authentic and a fair price. The new location was a bit cryptic as they haven’t put up a sign yet. The top says “Coalescence Design Studio”. They are located between The Mint pub and a hair salon.

I have shopped at this store for years, I just tried the tamales for the first time. Chicken and veggie were absolutely amazing. Must try. They have such a fantastic selection of Mexican items that you can only get in Mexico (vanilla!!!). I can not wait for those tamales again. Thank you!

Wow! Great store, packed full of so many goodies. So glad I asked if they had frozen passionfruit.. it's in the back freezers!

A full wall plus more of reasonably priced herbs and spices, especially dried peppers. They also have lots of Mexican canned goods and corn tortillas. If you are planning to cook an authentic Mexican dish, or need a specialty pepper for a dish, check this place out first.

love love love this store. small. packed with goodies. everything I need including friendly convo with abuelita behind the counter. reminds ne of every little groceteria in Spain as a kid. prices super reasonable and they're and it's not a trendy overpriced 'global' market . real deal.

This might be the greatest little store in Victoria that nobody knows about. Every spice and pepper you could ever want, at very reasonable prices, and not just Mexican spices! I will come back to try the food!

PROS love when things get a little spicy, and if you want to know the best place do #doitYYJ the Mexican House of Spices is the place to be. This specialty grocery store has all the Mexican treats, whether you are looking for spicy, sweet, savory or custom made #putitinmyMOUTH frozen goods. We adore that the owners chose to stand for all human rights by showcasing a red umbrella sticker in their window. PROS TIP - If you are looking for Jesus candles, Ponchos, Mexican jewelry or other nick knacks - stop into this store to cruise through their eclectic selection of products to say #putitinmyBAG to.

This tiny taco 🌮 joint is more than what I expected when my sumptuous tangy double-walled chicken tacos. The sauce is delicious, the bottom taco shells are pan seared so all flavours meld beautifully! Mmmmm

The amazing selection of spices is only the tip of the ice berg when it comes to this wonderful little store. There is incredible range of imported condiments, snacks, sweets and other foods. The lovely owner makes tamales which you can buy frozen, or fresh on some days - they're delicious! On Fridays she makes mole. Everything is very reasonably priced. I highly recommend to any home cook, lover of Mexican foods, or someone curious to discover something new!

This store has a great selection of products from Mexico you won't find in any other stores in Victoria. Tons of spices, blends, snacks and more. There's even Chorizo as well as hand made Tamales and Tortillas. The owner works there and is very friendly and nice. I'd recommend a stop here for any of your authentic Mexican products.

Amazing and reasonably priced selection of authentic Mexican ingredients. Store owner was extremely kind and knew exactly what I needed to make some al pastor tacos! The best place to find dried chilies for all your favourite recipes...until your next trip to Mexico! 😉

Super helpful! I called looking for Guascas and the woman working was just closing and told me he'd be closed the next day as well..... Then the next day she called me to let me know that she was opening the store. It was super sweet and helpful and clearly she remembers what the customers needs and wants are and tries to meet them.

Huge help!!!! So happy.

i came two times. the first time i got a chicken tamal and it tasted terrible. the second time i got pupusas. the lady asked me if i wanted the cheese pupusa or the pupusas with meat. i asked for the ones with meat. she gave me a pack of pupusas (about 5 or 6). they costed me 15 dollars. i was surprised by the price. later i figured they were not the type that i asked for (not the meat ones but the cheese pupusas). Why bother ask if you are going to end up giving me the wrong ones? the taste of the pupusas was ok at most.

Good, but not good enough.... In general, it had a wide selection of Mexican and Central Merican staples. Decent prices.
But, there is always a but, sometimes they have whaty you want and many, many Times they dont.
It' s frustrating to go to but your usual stuff and they don't have it. Looking for alternatives...
Foodie Goodie
Have checked out the store and it has all the goodies of Mexico...

Lots and lots of authentic mexican food stuffs for those cooking at home or ?. Some store made foods for take out as well. I had a chicken tamale and having bought a container of home made green salsa the combination made for a tasty lunch.
The owner is really nice and had me sample a few things that I may have not discovered otherwise.
And she gave me a bottle of hot sauce as a gift?!.
Fantastic.
I will be shopping there on a regular basis. And its a locally owned and run business I'll be happy to support.

For items not easily found around town. They sell Mexican chorizo and frozen arepas. We tried the tamales to go and they were pretty good. We walked around the corner and had them with a coffee from Discovery Coffee. I haven't eaten many tamales so can't compare, but I enjoyed them.

Love it!. This place is wonderful. I love Mexican cooking and you can find everything you need to make any type of dish. I purchased a tortilla press and the necessary ingredients at the store to make tortillas, but I always end up buying their's!

Avacados for $0.99!

Quick bite and more - a place for latin american cooks!. If you are looking for a quick bite, fresh homemade tortillas can be found here! But more importantly, if you are looking for the ingredients to make your own Mexican/latin american dishes, there is a good selection here to buy from. Just a little store, but loads of speciality spices, sauces and more, with very knowledgeable owners who can help you find what you need and maybe even import it for you if you can't find it.

In its third year of business, the MHoS is your one-stop shop for anything Mexican, or even just spices of all kinds. Heck, they even have some Caribbean ingredients. Even if you’re visiting Victoria on the way back to the Mainland, this should be your last stop before blowing town. It’s right there on Douglas, on your way to the ferry, so why not?

I may have found where most of the Mexican, South American and Caribbean restaurants in town gets their spices. Upon entering the Mexican House of Spice, I was treated to a delight of scents, an array of packaged spices, a towering amount of canned goods and plenty of sodas to make my eyes go wide. I was very impressed with the fact that no shelf looked half bare or empty. Had there been a deli, I’d be salivating.
