Review Kuku's - Victoria

Jennifer Dempsey
Loved this place! We got takeout to take home and the service was amazing. The staff took their time to give us suggestions and help us decide what to order. I love that the mango lassis were in the fridge ready to go and the dessert selection is amazing. I loved how all the sweets we got aren’t over sweet like most North American sweets. All the food we got was so tasty! The butter chicken is different from how we have had it anywhere else and it was so creamy, delicious and had a lovely mix of spices. This is a great place for quick take out Indian food. So affordable too! I can’t wait to go back to try some different items.

They have a great variety of East Indian food and by far the best value per portion that I have come across in town. The three item lunch of rice, one vegetable curry, and one meat curry is what I always go for, and I am always full after my meal. They also have a great selection of deserts all year round.

I wish I can put five more stars. First the owners are fantastic, and you will be treated like part of the family, i wasn't treated like a customer. because they show care about my food allergy and being vegetarian. The food tastes amazing, and lot of sweets to choose. the service was 10 stars and the price was soooo cheap that i had to add $10 for the tip because i never imagined that it will be so cheap. and the food was 10 stars too. Here you will feel like your home with a family and eat an amazing lunch with them.

Fantastic mom and pop shop! Service was prompt even though they were packed. I had the butter chicken and fish pakora which were excellent. More of a take out place as seating is very limited so I won't critique other than food quality.

Always my go to for Indian food. Fabulous authentic food. The owners are also incredibly kind and generous people. The fish pakora are the best I have had anywhere. Buy a big bag of samosas for lunches too!
Michael Mataanda
Nice customer service and quick pick and go. Not much seating space. Their spice level is pretty descent

Absolutely love the food here! Everything is delicious. I have to satisfy my craving for this place every so often. Great selection of baked goods also.

Just nipped and grabbed a Butter Chicken Poutine. Well priced and REALLY TASTY 😋

Their sweets were awesome! It was my first visit, I heard quite a lot about them before. Everything was so good. It's a must try
Garry Groth
Always the best food every time I go there. And most friendly staff.

So, my family love East Indian food. And we eat a lot of it. So why we have not eaten from Kuku's until now is unexplainable...so I have remedied that issue. Last night we ordered 10 dishes and it was a MIGHTY triumph! Oh my, the chicken curry is off the charts, the butter chicken was different then any other, it has a nice spice and and kick. The paneer spring rolls and pakoras were amazing. And the price was very good. Oh and I ordered for delivery at 6:30pm and guess what...at 6:30pm a super nice dude arrived and handed off the hot nicely wrapped packages. Mission. Accomplished. It will be done again....and again.

2nd best Indian takeout in 2014... yeah, not so much anymore.

To start off, the Dahl was pretty good. Could have had more spice, but as I have come to understand, the pallet of Victoria tends to find mayonnaise zesty. The portion was ample and all in all, I'd probably order it again.

That is where the positives stop.

I'm not sure if it was a really low bar in 2014 or if it has been that big of a slide but I have never tasted a butter chicken as bad as what I got from here. It was a thin, sweet tomato sauce, with virtually zero spice and a splash of cream and/or yogurt to make it less obvious you were basically eating something similar to canned Hunts tomato sauce, or Prego. Seriously, it tasted like the cheapest spaghetti sauce you can buy with some form of dairy added. The chicken was so dry and flavourless, one could be excused for mistaking the bland chunks for old erasers or shoe-soles. I've honestly had better butter chicken at a gas station in the middle of South Dakota than here. The portion:price was decent but that hardly makes up for the worst Indian food experience I have had in a long time.

The naan was also terrible, and might have been the packaged naan you can buy for $3 for 5or6 pieces at the local grocery store. It was cold, rubbery and the garlic naan had zero garlic flavour.

My next day wasn't so hot either, but we can all do without reliving those details.

All and all this was a terrible experience I hope to never revisit. I thought it was worth a try as it was open late and I didn't want pizza or fast food, I regret that decision. Feel free to roll the dice and take your chances.

Ordered butter chicken, rice and naan bread
First off, the order arrived over 2 hours after it was ordered. Was told the driver was out for delivery and had to wait an hour after that talk for him to show up. The packaging was horrible. Leaked everywhere. Naan bread was just a heated up pita bread. Butter chicken tasted like chicken in tomato sauce with a hint of curry AND it was 90% sauce/10% chicken. Food was lukewarm and the rice was cold when it arrived.

Will NEVER be ordering from here ever again.

Future customers BE WARNED!!!!
This is a place my wife and I love to get take-out from when we're not feeling like cooking. Be warned that some of the curries, such as goat, have bones that are quite annoying to pick through. I know it's an ordinary thing to order but they have great butter chicken. Some of their menu items are hit-or-miss (goat, as mentioned, as well as lamb curries are less than stellar) but they have great samosas (incredible dipping sauce!) and naan. Obviously my review is only considering the food since it is very much a pick-up kind of place rather than eat-in, but the food is mostly good and reasonably priced.

nothing more lazy than making your customers pay for the curry and meat seperate from the rice. to top it off the curry is like 3 dollars less than the full dish with rice at most other places. nothing more annoying getting a dish thinking your getting a dish; not part of a do it yourself meal thats overpriced.

I was in the area the other day and we popped in. We just got some samosas and a their "spring roll". In the past i have found their food hit and miss. These two things were good that day. The spring roll was just paneer(fresh in-house cheese) and peas deep fried in a crispy spring roll wrap. Really hits the spot dipped in a little chutney. I had never heard of anything like it so I applaud them for trying out cool ideas. The samosa was big, with a nice moist garlicky potato filling. But I do think the dough may have been a bit undercooked. As a suggestion I feel like the chutneys could be more interesting, perhaps a few options to pick from? Thanks for the food Kuku.

Ok, I am Indian and I expected some authentic INDIAN food. IT IS NOT. THE NAANS ARE PITAS, THE SHAHI PANEER CURRY HAS NO BASE, the place just reeks of unauthenticity. DO NOT EVER SPEND A PENNY HERE!
Karensmith
AWFUL. I ordered the butter chicken and rice and poppadums to my place and it was 25$ which was a rip off and second the butter chicken was the most disgusting butter chicken I've ever had - it just didn't taste right it was gross and oily and just bad and the chicken itself in it was chewy and just awful - do not suggest!!
Bjorn
Really bad. Very bad experience, the worst Indian food we have ever had. Even our "eat everything in sight" teenagers stood down. The food left us queasy and feeling unwell.
Fiona
Not a first choice, but okay in a pinch. I wish there was a "mediocre" option as that sums up my feelings about Kukus better than flat out dislike.

I was really craving Indian food and my usual favourite Indian restaurant was closed. As the only (?) Indian delivery in Victoria, I chose Kukus. While I don't regret my decision, I can't say I was thrilled with the result. The vegetable samosas were fine—nothing to get excited about, but—but the chicken curry was incredibly oily. The entire top layer was pure oil. The naan was also pretty oily and very small.

It's definitely not my favourite in Victoria, but if you really want Indian food and don't want to go outside, it's a decent enough option, I guess.
Tayyclark
Best. The people who are saying this is "the worst" clearly don't know what authentic Indian food is.
The food is always fresh! Delivery comes faster than my ex boyfriend and the butter chicken is to die.
Deepasriver
Worst food ever!. I tried dal makhani and a butter naan and it was the worst dal mahkani like 15 days stale . Butter naan They don't know what is butter naan it was frozen naan that we get from target or walmart with no butter on it. I will never ever go there again. I would suggest everyone don't ever try it's not worth it.
HungryHippo
Delicious food and speedy delivery!. I love Kuku's! I have ordered it online a number of times now and am always very happy with the quick delivery and quality of the food. Pricing is very good- and the $5 delivery charge is fine with me because of the great and speedy service. :) Great job Kuku's!

Food = good, Packaging = not so good. The food was pretty tastey but the packing wasn't and it leaked everywhere. At least it was good...decently priced, quick service. Veggie pakoras were good, not too spicy. Butter chicken was good, not the best but certainly not the worst! Naan delish but small.
Terri
Great :). I stopped in for a quick "lunch box" of chicken curry. There was a decent amount of tender chicken, the sauce was very full flavoured with a kick of heat but not so much as to take your head off :) I'll definitely return. It was a good value for the big impact of flavour.
Jessie_kidd
I LOVE KUKU'S. To me it is the best East Indian food in voctoria. I would go anywhere else for butter chicken.. My absolute favorite is the chicken pakora
Gunstar_Hero
Quality has gone downhill. When it first opened Kuku's had cheap, good quality Indian. Coming back to it several years later we saw some mixed reviews and with a little bit of trepidation we decided to try it again. Unfortunately we were disappointed with the quality of the food. The Palak paneer was a horrible over pureed mess. The spicy chicken was ok and the chicken tikka was not up to standard. The Naan were small and not particularly flavorful. Its too bad because this place used to be better. Hopefully they can get back to making good food again.

Tired of Waiting. I ordered and they seemed nice enough and said it would be about 45 minutes for delivery. Its been over an hour and its still not here. I called the shop and they were very curt with me saying it would be here soon. And then he hung up on me. I'm not really impressed with the service thus far and will be ordering from elsewhere in the future.

Veggie combo sucks. I threw it all in garbage .. gross ....curry in a can is better than this .... :(

i decided to give kukus one more chance.. last time i ordered the butter chicken it was sub par but the somosas were great rice was ok if i was hungry i would eat it but i have definitely had better way better ......

this time i ordered veggie lovers OMG WHAT A MISTAKE !!! the rice was just regular white rice with frozen veggies over then spinkled with curry powder ,the paneer was disgusting !!! was like eating old spinach in a can .. the korma was not the best either but was the only thing that was somewhat edible ...oh and the naan bread was weird .... hard in middle, doughy on outside and small round and thick ? not like any naan i have had before it was the only part i actually ate ... all that for thirty bucks delivered to your door ? next time I'm driving to pick up something decent ... DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY IM A CURRY LOVER AND THIS PLACE SUCKS !!!!
Danyel Zilinski
Delicious butter chicken! Lots of sauce for rice. Save $$$$ make your own rice at home and leave the hard work to Kukus...mains have lots of flavourful sauce. Thumbs up on the Butter Chicken and Aloo Mattar! Can't wait to try other menu items...

LOVE KuKus
Sk
Average. The food was average, the customer service was terrible. We got take out and they forgot a portion of our order (yes we should have checked before leaving but who really does that?). When we phoned, there was no apology - they blamed us and then hung up. Yes - they hung up on us.
We will not endorse Kuku's nor will we recommend it to anyone else.
CD
Hit and Miss. I love the Pakoras, and the samosas are great. The butter chicken is amazing. The people are so nice - I really, really want the restaurant to succeed. But...they really need to make sure all staff is paying attention to Food Safe handling procedures 100% of the time. I will leave it at that, and hope they read this and get everyone working up to all Food Safe Codes, all of the time.
Garry
Most disgusting indian food in Victoria. While there are no amazing indian restaurants in Victoria, this has to be the worst. The food has no flavour what so ever and the paneer was rubbery. Threw out most of the food away. Will not be going there again.
Mike S.
I like it. Great butter chicken, good chili chicken, saag is good, veggie curry mix is good too. Don't have to run to the bathroom 5 minutes after eating which to me is a sign of decent curry haha
Jan
I love the butter chicken!! If you are new to Victoria, just visiting, or a local, this place is a MUST!! The owner is wonderful and so friendly just like the food they serve. You've gotta try it!!!
Vic Vegetarian
Good Appitizers, but that's pretty much it.. A good place if I want to chow down on appies, I enjoy the Veggie Samosa, Vegetable Mix Pakora and the Paneer Pakora. But I wouldn't order a meal again. I tried a couple times but after the last time I swore never again, way to greasy.
Homer
Will do. No frills, quick take out, and cheap indian food. I wished the prata, naan breads were crispy.

I give the buttered curry chicken two thumbs up.
Foodfan
OMG YUM!. I can't believe all these other reviews, I've been a huge butter chicken fan and have tried it everywhere, I love it there. I am sooo in love with the prawn pakora!!!!!!!!!! The best I'm going to order right now hahahaha
Cookin' Wit Coolio
Solid take out. If you're looking for no-frills yet tasty indian food, give it a shot. It's no Amrikko's, but I'd actually take Kuku's over most Victoria Indian restaurants
JL
Good cheap fast and near my house. They make their own cheese
Dinerrhea
President's choice. This goes to show that you can open a restaurant and serve only reheated food from superstore. The owner is friendly but the food is no good. Nothing authentic. save some money and cook your own jar of tika masala.
Mralph
Sorry, but dissapointed. Chicken was very rubbery and unedible, flavours were ok, but come on use real chicken. Very dissapointed.
Timaila
Terrible. Lamb curry was the worst I have ever tasted and it was covered in tiny sharp pieces of bone. Butter chicken was ok. Very strong tomato sauce flavor. Naan did not taste fresh. Will not be ordering here again. Spice Jammer on Fort Street is 100% better.
Breakkie G
I like it. I get butter chicken for takeout often. Always tastes great to me. I do have a place i like better for butter chicken takeout, but kukus is pretty good and quick for $10 pickup.
John Smith
Ordered from a hotel it took almost an hour. No cultery was provided, and there were missing food!! Called the resturant back, there was no apology and hang up right away. The curry tasted old, cold, and reheated and the naan was extremely rubbery and nasty. The rest of the order came almost an hour later. Thou the delivery boy was nice, there is not much to say about the owners service. Very dissapointing. DO NOT reccomend
Tupac
They are KuKu crazy for their lack of quality control.
Letdown
Disgusting. What else to say everthing here is DISGUSTING. Just don't go there
JLP
No joke, worst meal I've ever had in Vic.. This was truly the most awful meal I've been served in eight years in Victoria!!! The chili chicken was just dry, diced up chicken breast in Frank's Red Hot. I like Frank's, great on a chicken wing, but not appropriate for a supposedly Indian dish. Vegetables in the rice were frozen veg mix, curried goat was very salty. No redeeming qualities, should be a crime to serve that food.
Chrissy
Veggie Samosas are the best I've ever had.. Love Kukus. Would eat their food every day if I could. Everything on the menu is deelish. My only complaint is that the lamb and goat curries are mostly bones, which can be annoying, I'd pay more for more meat.

I love the samosas and the fish pakoras, and the $9.99 meal deal you can get is awesome.
Karen
Disgusting. Just ordered for the first time from Kukus. Both the veg korma and mattar paneer had exactly the same overpowering spice. The raita was $7.50 and nothing but yogurt. Oh, it gets better! I found a black hair cooked into the pakora and my husband found a black hair in his samosa. Gross! Needless to say we threw out our entire meal. What a waste of $60!!!!!
Rod
Not Bad. I am a big fan of butter chicken and went to this establishment about 3 or 4 times. The flavour of the butter chicken is good; however, there is something about seeing a huge batch of the stuff sitting behind the counter, uncovered, in a buffet style warmer, ready to be dished out as soon as you order it. It makes me wonder how long they let it sit there.
Ray
I hope they read this. Bone chips in lamb first time ordered. Too little food for the prices. Second time at Fort Rodd Hill kiosk, good food, but still too little portions for cost.
A Fat Bloke
Hole in the wall. Cheap honest food, better than some much more expensive places in town. Call ahead to avoid the wait, and have your food waiting in 20 minutes. Beware, lamb curry is full of bones. Really tasty, but if you aren't in to that sort of thing, go for the chicken!
Andrea
Awesome. I was having a stag night with me and my friends, we orderd food from the indian food store on Quadra Mckenzie and the lady that picked up the phone was so rude did not know how to speak ENGLISH, one of my friends said call KUKU;S we were all craving indian food, we go there and we all got free samples of food enough to feed us for the night the staff was so good to us we will be difinately going there again, CHEERS TO KUKU;S AWESOME FOOD. BTW AT LEAST THEY ARE FLUENT IN ENGLISH AND UNDERSTOOD US THANKS ALOT KUKU;S.

Great Prices. I like Kuku's because it is very close to our house. We usually order the family pack, for $20, and it has rice, butter chicken, naan, samosas, and dessert. We have had problems before though, with how he packs the bags, because he stacks everything and it has squashed the butter chicken everywhere. The food is always the same and pretty good, hot, and the owner is always kind when we go in.

I have a couple criticism though. One is that the guy is always rushed on the phone. I always get something on top of the family pack, and I ether have to be like, "WAIT, WAIT!" before he hangs up on me after I say I want a family pack, or call back because he has actually hung up on me (we usually get some pakoras, and the fish ones are especially tasty). My other complaint is the butter chicken. It is good, but it is nothing like any butter chicken I have had anywhere else.
Gestalt And Pepper
Don't believe all the bad press below!. I agree with the previous reviewer, why the whine? Kuku's samosas are some of the best I've ever had, slightly crispy outside, moist, flavourful inside with just the right amount of spice.

Someone complained about the lack of authenticity. I bet they didn't try the goat curry.

No overall it isn't the best Indian food I've had (and I have had better samosas, but only once I can remember) but its nowhere near the worst. For under $20, the 'family butter chicken dinner' has got to be the best deal in town. Everything including dessert, including 4 of those great samosas!
AT
One of the better ones in Vic'. I am really surprised to hear the whiners below. Kuku's, for the price point, is one of the better East Indian places in town. Like someone else said the heat is great, try the chilli chicken it's hot, tasty and all round awesome. I am from England so know a thing or two about Indian food having eaten a fair amount of it. It's hard to get good Indian food in this town. Da Tandoor is my other fav but it's downtown which sucks. Spice Jammer was good but we had a bad experience and it was really pricey. The only bad thing was whoever answered the phone was a bit off with my wife. You can't do that often and get repeat business. Why is it hard to get really good indian food around here? If you're asking this then try Kuku's.
Vana Farlowe
Truly Vile. I was excited about haveing an Indian delivery restaurant and couldn't wait to try it.

The food was inedible. It tasted as if it was warm slop just sitting stewing and waiting to be popped into tinfoil.

For what I paid we could have gone to Da Tandoor and had a feast.

A very large disappointment.
Sid
Service is so poor..arogrant. Worst est india food i never had.....after sabri...he claims he is best and prices are okay but not better then one on quadra and mackzie...i actually rate it as more authentic curries of est india.....if u do not know the dish u are ordering..then u are gettin ripped....coz add all the crap just to make it look right...believe me ...

i would never go to the place ...i finally found one more on quadra and makenzie...much better and ppl are pleasing .

if 10 is best i rate this as -2....

i really want you to go there and experience how arrgant those ppl are...treatment you get is as they are doing you a favor...

thanks for reading..

sid

The Butter Chicken is great. Waiting for the buffet to open.....
Dan
Great food. It compares to the big city
better than the normal east indian fly by night, will fool these small city folks into buying our mush as its all they have, restaurants in victoria .
at least here the food is hotter than normal and you can get made to order stuff
Rob N.
Great Value and Full of Flavor. We ordered from Kuku's for the first time this past weekend. We did not know the portion sizing and ordered too much but didn't pay alot. Basically for under $40 we could have fed 5 people.

We ordered the vegetable pakora, vegetable samosas, Daal, Chana Masala, and the Aloo Gobi. All were full of flavor with the right amount of spice.

I will be ordering from there again!
Ed Sum
The family friendly atmosphere is certainly one reason for me to come back. I could zip here before visiting friends who live only a few blocks away. I could easily bring a couple of samosas or pakoras with me to share, and when they are sold by the pound, I'm sure all of us would wolf it down in an instant. The variety offered here is great. In their take-out menu, they list vegetable, cauliflower, chickpea curry, chicken, fish and prawns. Now that's a list! But if those appetizers are not enough, I'm intrigued by the type of Tandoori breads offered. They have all three types--the root, naan and paratha--that can no doubt be stuffed with anything I would want. Now if I can only safely order a meat side-dish without the bones, then I've found a meal to savour!

Kuku's has been open on Burnside Road near Harriet for more than three years now. Do to the problems with the building, the owners never managed to make into a full service restaurant which is sad because the corner of Harriet and Burnside needs at least one restaurant worth going to.

Sheila got us our dinner there last night , work and a sleeping baby stopping all the cooking I wanted to do for dinner. She got us take away, more great butter chicken and pakoras for me. As of yesterday the buffet half was still not open. Meanwhile half
