Review Bon Sushi 2 - Victoria

I just love the food at this restaurant, especially fresh sashimi! I ordered assorted sashimi and it's so fresh and melting in my mouth. I also tried their new menu, Sashimi salad. Perfect for people who seek no carb diet. Rolls taste so yummy! Their tea tastes authentic Japanese green tea. Servers are nice and friendly Will definitely come back

Enjoyed this Japanese restaurant. Good atmosphere. Great customer service. Fast delivery of orders. They have a wide selection on their menu. From don buri, to noodles to sushi to poke and more. We have tried a few and their all sooo good. I recommend this nice place on West Saanich.

The prices at this sushi restaurant were reasonable considering the quality of the food and the overall dining experience. While it may not be the cheapest option in town, I believe that the value for money is definitely worth it.

Absaloutly my favorite sushi place currently, the deep fried california roll and donkatsu are amazing.

Each item I ordered brought me back to the food I ate when I lived in Japan. I am so glad I ate in at the restaurant because everything served was just right!

Sushi from Bon Sushi is a take-out staple in our house. Always always always their sushi is fresh and delicious. Todays order was california rolls for the kids, spicy tuna fried rolls and baked salmon rolls for the parents. Ingredients are always top shelf. I'll eat the avocado pieces my youngest makes me pick out of his cali roll. It green, perfectly ripe, tastes great. Not brown or too hard. Baked salmon rolls are amazing - on the right in the photo (sorry its a little blurry). Salmon is baked perfectly. Cream cheese and asparagus add tang and crunch. First time trying the spicy tuna fried roll - on the left in photo. Loved it! Very hearty. Every piece made you feel like you were eating something of substance. Would order again in a heartbeat. 10/10. Highly recommend Bon Sushi in Royal Oak. We have never been disappointed in approx 25 times ordering from them. Excellent.

My family and I where looking for a quick meal before heading to a swim meet, we dropped in, looking for pre made sushi. This company does not make pre made sushi, but! One of the employees, says she can have sushi made in 2 minutes, I did not believe her, but she proved me wrong! Sushi for four in 2 minutes, i was very impressed. The food was pretty good, standard sushi joint, but the service was beyond excellent.

Had an incredible experience at BonSushi this evening. Staff were extremely generous and welcoming. Fantastic service and the food was absolutely delectable! Can't wait to come back and can't thank them enough. They went above and beyond!

The best sushi place that I have eaten at in Victoria. Have done both eat-in and take-out. Great prices and items; staff are average.

Had lunch at this location recently with a friend. The staff were very polite and accommodating. The restaurant itself is fairly spacious, quiet and cozy. The food arrived quickly and tasted delicious. It was my first time tasting an Imperial roll, and I enjoyed it. Thank you!

Honestly I love going here by myself from time to time! It’s amazing service and great food. I think one of the best things on the menu is the gyoza!! It’s too good

Miso disappointed.. Thought I'd give bon sushi a try last night, and have to say I was extremely disappointed. The rice was dry and unseasoned and the rolls tasted bland and flavourless. Even the nigiri tasted like nothing because the rice was so awful. The worst part is the price, how can you charge premium quality prices for a product that isn't even upto mall food court grade sushi? Overall terrible experience.

Lovely staff and sushi.. Very friendly atmosphere. Every single member of staff is friendly and warm. Feels like home. 5/5 Try the Victoria roll :)

Great service!. It was such a busy Friday night.... and of course our food came out little late but servers treated us nicely and the food was fantastic!! Especially, the Hot night roll was amazing! So glad we tried this place out and will definitely visit again!

I have heard from a few people how great Bon sushi is. So i have decided to try it ( mind you I know what good sushi is). Not impressed! At all! Actually quite disappointed! The rice was crunchy, Dry, Cold and not properly seasoned. The fish was ok. But how can you serve a old gross rice like that? I didn't eat any of the rice, I just couldn't, It was one of the worse sushi rice I have ever had! Thats bad! I guess not as bad for the people that suggested to me! They obviously don't know what sushi is all about, and neither does Bon sushi! So disappointed!

Pretty good. Ive had it several times and it has been decent. However everytime I order the Ebi mayo they forget the friggen mayo...kind of disappointing..

"Bon Sushi" is worth a visit!. "Bon Sushi" is almost in our backyard, and I am so glad that we finally tried it. The service was great, and the food was prepared well, and presented beautifully! We had Miso Soup, that was just right. Their Agedashi Tofu has a delicate flavour, and very nice accompanying sauce. I was impressed with the Spicy Tuna Fried Roll. Normally, I would not be able to eat rolls, due to special needs, but these are perfectly prepared, with a wonderful flavour. The Soft Shell Crab Rolls are worth a try too. Their Seared Tuna Sashimi is perfect. We don't have to go downtown anymore. Our neighbourhood has a real winner in "Bon Sushi!"

Take Out errors again..... I ordered the Sockeye salmon sashimi once for take out and when I got back to work it was NOT sockeye. It was wasted as I do not eat inferior or farmed salmon. So...when I ordered it again tonight and told the server to make sure I am getting the correct order because I didn't last time. I get back to work and there are NO chopsticks, NO soya sauce and No napkins....I ordered plain deep fried tofu with sesame sauce....NO sesame sauce. The salmon was not sockeye, which has a red colour and narrow flakes, this was orange and had wide flakes from a larger salmon, and it had a "cooked" texture. I know citrus can cook raw seafood but can the styrofoam container??? It also was not trimmed properly and still had the white underside of the skin attached. (for 13.00 + tax + tip this was garbage). The Udon was good with lots of veggies and bean sprouts added. Won't be trying again :(

Crown Ebi Roll wins!. Bon Sushi (Saanich) was recommended to me by a Japanese student. Since that encounter, I've been a 'regular' (every week, once a week) at the Saanich locale for the past 2+ years. When I dine by myself, I habitually order the Crown Ebi roll, among other dishes.

The food is excellent! Occasionally, a quality conscious friend joins me and raves positively about the sushi/sashimi. The price per portion is very reasonable, especially compared to what other restaurants downtown are charging for food of much less quality.

Be patient. Staff can be relatively new to the country and still learning the language. My Japanese is improving because I trade Japanese phrases for Canadian idioms that can be puzzling to learners.

????. I have been eating sushi since well before it was popular....1980 to be exact and always go where the food is good . I have been there a few time now and will return, service staff are friendly, but more important the food is excellent and very reasonably priced..$12.95 for Toro shasimi....everything is fresh and tasty. The decore is average and was even a bit cold once but great food at a good price, I will return.

It was just ok, nothing that knocks your socks off.

Wrong takeout. Completely disappointed. We went to the restaurant and waited over 1.5 hours for our dinner while take out was moving quickly. So... Ordered takeout. Of three dishes ordered, and the numbers repeated at least 5 times we managed to come home with EELS not salmon. Perhaps it was one of the returned dinners. Yuck. Although close to us would never go back. When I called to let them know the young lady actually GIGGLED.

Good selection of rolls. Much of the menu was typical of most Japanese restaurants in town, boring bento boxes with California rolls, tempura and salad (YAWN!). There were however some really interesting sushi rolls to choose from. I was very happy with mine, will go back.

BON BON BON!!. I have been dining at Bon Sushi Royal Oak ever since moving here a year ago. Among my favourites are the "Spicy Tuna Fried Roll", the "Cali-Fry Roll", the "Baked Salmon Roll, the "Spicy Ramyen", the "Eby Sunomono" and the delicious Lunch Bento Boxes. The staff are so delightful! I love the servers and the head sushi chef! Oh -- and you must have the house spicy mayo with EVERYTHING!

Cones are so fresh and yummy beats grocery store sushi by miles and it's cheaper

Had takeout; service was prompt and courteous. Dynamite roll was excellent, but the Victoria Roll was outstanding; silky smooth texture and amazing flavour. Definitely going back again.

After having been favourably impressed for the few times I'd been there, and the few times my workplace has ordered lunch from Bon Sushi's Royal Oak location, I was dismayed to discover the strange, almost alien experiences others were writing about, especially Panavision. So I set out last night to discover whether I could still add to the tremendous string of good luck and positive feelings I had about the place, or whether I was indeed now living in a twisted Twilight Zone alternate universe of some bitter deity's creation.

The woman who took my reservation was obviously smiling and happy when she spoke with me. But, perhaps that's just the polite and upbeat way humans react to other polite and upbeat humans?

Upon arrival, every member of the staff was smiling, nodding, and welcoming. But perhaps that's just the way genuine and kind people react to humble people who are obviously enthusiastically looking forward to a sushi dinner experience?

On order last night was a meal of perhaps a dozen individual dishes, as the occasional reviewer here has hinted without specifying, or stated without being explicit, that the food at Bon Sushi is anything less than "above expectations," and being the petulant precocious person I am, I felt it my duty to verify such claims to as great a gastronomic degree as my modest appetite allowed.

The gyoza were as expected; however being among the first dishes to arrive we were relieved to rediscover that which we already knew; for the presentation was perfect, the colour and appeal of such a common and otherwise potentially plain dish tasteful in all senses of the word. The dishware was clean and interesting. And yet there was the worry that remained? What of the sushi? Would it be as well-prepared as we remembered? Or would we discover what others insisted was imminent?

The miso with its understated sprinkling of fresh green onion, its soft nori (was it wakame? I am not discerning enough to tell by flavour alone yet: I am but a seaweed novice, despite my humble 17 years of sushi enjoyment at restaurants ranging from east to west, west to south California, south California to posh Texas,) unobtrusive, the soft tofu wonderful and jellylike, and saltiness additive and delicious.

Rainbow rolls next were excellent. Sakura sushi (a lovely preparation of avocado and baby shrimp on sushi rice drizzled with a delicious savory sauce) was excellent. The sushi rice was uniformly body-temperature, of perfect consistency, and impeccable form. The dynamite roll had fried shrimps of such delectably perfect softness, not overcooked and rubbery the way lesser itamae occasionally fail at. The nori was of perfect crispness and warmth.

Our dishes arrived with such speed and alacrity that we didn't at first believe they'd made it for us: the taste, temperatures, and artistic construction proved otherwise, instantly at first bite.

We enjoyed the sockeye sashimi greatly; there was only the fresh smell of the sea on them, and even remembering the flavour, delicately dipped in soy, makes my mouth water and my tummy demand to return to pastime glories..

Next up was the arrival of an arrangement of nigiri sushi pieces, ranging from ebi to toro to maguro to sake to a California combo my wife ordered, comprised of a half-dozen individual pieces lined up in a single delectable row.

Again the rice was perfect and body-temperature. Again the presentation interesting and appetizing. And again we remained supremely undisappointed. Chomping on my nigiri morsels, I was reminded of all the great sushi experiences I've had, propelled even back to the first time my Vietnamese friend and former coworker got me hooked on it, all those years ago in Vancouver.

I always finish up with a small bowl of plain sushi rice, and some green tea to guarantee a permanent pleasant aftertaste.

So.. yeah. Good sushi. Not perfect. Nobody's perfect. But it was very good.

LOVE this place! So sad to see so many bad reviews, but the Victoria roll and hot night roll are to die for, and everything else we have tried has been awesome. The service isn't the best, but the food more than makes up for it! Pretty much come every week :)

STAY AWAY- ROYAL OAK. We went here in September 2012. We ordered about $100 worth of sushi. Anyhow the first 2 dishes came and they were not fresh. They tasted terrible. I told the waitress to not bring the rest of the food as we are not staying, I asked for the bill and they would not take any items off the bill including the ones not even served to our table yet! When asking the waitress about this issue she pretended not to speak English. UNREAL. So we paid the $100 and we we left.
June 2013-- We decide to try this place again. What a mistake. First off the restaurant was so hot and they refused to turn on air conditioning. We order 1 large sake and 1 water and about 10 items off the menu. They bring the sake and a Kappa Maki roll (cucumber roll) to the table. I take one look at the roll and it is not the normal way of making it ( like how can you mess that one up). I say to the waitress that we do no want this but will order another dish to replace it. She says we are not allowed we must pay for it and whatever else we order. She says you been here before you know our rules. I said pardon me???!! What is she talking about..what rules? She say too bad for us and that we must learn from past experience. WHAT THE HECK??!!! I say thank you and DO NOT bring the rest of the order to the table just bill me for the sake and we are leaving. We have no interest in eating here now. She says no you must pay for all food now. (remember we have only been in the restaurant 8 minutes) food not served yet. So we decided to film the table , the waitress, and the entire conversation with our iphone. We had to as this was just too crazy of a situation. We are told we cannot leave the restaurant. I get up and walk to the front and ask for my bill. I asked for my bill a total of 9 times from my table and at the front sushi bar.. They will not give it to me. They want me to go back and sit at my table and wait for my dinner. NO THANKS! Now they want me to talk to owner on the phone who is not at the restaurant. I am not impressed as they literally will not let us leave and now are putting the owner on the speaker phone which is the other waiters phone. WHY??? We just want to leave and pay for our sake and get the hell out of this nutty place.. WE ARE STILL FILMING the whole time AND HAVE NOT STOPPED..She begins to yell at me through the speaker saying I am wasting her money and time!! She is ordering me to pay. UNBELIEVABLE!!! We have no idea who this woman is or why we have to talk to her.She is screaming through the speaker of this waiter's iphone at me!! I have a $20 bill in my hand and am asking for change for the sake that I did not drink. I am willing to pay for that as it is $8.95 plus tax.. They say no change and no receipt for me. I tell them that they are being filmed and I will give this to ctv or youtube . They finally take the money and walk away, now they come back and hand it back to me and say the owner does not want my money ... but at the very same moment my son sees them on the phone to police trying to say we have eaten and stolen the food and refused to pay. CRAZY! NUTS! So still filming all of this, we put $20 on their counter and they refuse to give change and no receipt and this is clearly seen on film. We say we are leaving we have had enough of this chaos and we go out the front to our car. They all chase us out of the restaurant and now are filming us and standing in front of our car with their iphones. They are yelling and saying POLICE comin!. I cannot believe any of this is happening. We continue filming them as we drive away. So I have now sent this video in to the Better Business Bureau, Heath Inspection, Facebook, Twitter, 4 newspapers and to CTV. I also have put it onto youtube. Anyone that has seen this film including all my neighbors says they should be shut down. Like how hard up can you be for money to treat customers in such a manner as we were treated? All over a cucumber roll? STAY AWAY FROM THIS RESTAURANT.

Bad service!. I don't mind the food but have to say some days its good but other days its terrible. The waitresses act pretty clueless sometimes and take forever to get to you. I prefer take out only!

Extensive Sushi Menu. This place has an extensive selection of sushi and rolls and also hot meals and appetizers as well. Busiest times seem to be right at lunch time 12-1pm, and also in the evening after 8pm (at least the time I went). Outside of these times, the restaurant seems to run on the cold side, and the furniture is hard which discourages patrons from staying a long time. I haven't sampled a lot of the food options as I have my favorites and tend to stay with those most of the time. The blazing unagi roll is quite entertaining and also I love the unagi so it's one I enjoy. Also the Caterpillar roll is quite good.

Lately, they seem to be a bit short staffed or have new staff. I think there is another restaurant location in addition to the two they had, so they are splitting time between. Avoid Sundays also as they are closed on that day.

Going Downhill - Won't be back. Very disappointing meal and service! Used to love this place but after the last 2 visits we won't be back. Fish was not fresh, teriyaki sauce tasted like it was watered down with vinegar, rice was hard and crumbly. When the staff asked how everything was and we told her she just looked uncomfortable and walked away. Too bad - we were regulars, at least 1x/week.

Bon SUSHI. I absolutely love their rolls. My favourites are the yam tempura rolls (ask for the "black and white sauce" on top) and the deep fried rolls are good as well. They also have great adadeshi tofu. The seared tuna is delicious and fresh. It comes on a bed of cucumbers and lightly seasoned. The ONLY down side in my opinion is the dressing on the garden salad, I prefer the usual soya-vinegar dressing...the one they have is thick and fruity (maybe orange?). The steak sauce also does not compare to Chiba, Japanese Village or Azuma. I would also ask for no dehydrated tofu in the miso soup. Other than that, I love and crave their rolls and seared tuna :)!

Consistently good. I've been for lunch many times and been impressed. This time went for dinner. Great food. Love the "deep fried" and "grilled" sushi rolls. Sashimi and Ramen also excellent. Good service, good food

Enjoyed a Valentine's dinner. My husband and I shared a dinner combo and the presentation was delightful but even better than the looks was the taste. The service was pleasant and we will be back. I don't usually enjoy sushi but tonight's meal changed my mind.

Great Selection. We were running late before heading to a concert, and we had yet to pick a restaurant. I was in the mood for Sushi, so just looked up what was closest on our way to the venue. The sushi here was great - had never tried sushi in Victoria since I moved here from Vancouver a year ago. Great selection and very yummy :)

Yum yum yum!. Went to the Royal Oak location for the first time last evening. Looks like they had a lot more than just sushi, although we just stuck to the rolls. They had all the standards -- I only wish they had translations (I always forget what tam ago, ikura, unagi, etc are). They also had some creative new options. Wasn't brave enough to try the deep-fried California roll. But the eel/cucumber, tuna/avocado and veggie rolls were tasty and reasonably priced. The Crown Ebi roll with prawn tempura and crab covered with cooked prawn was fantastic! Would definitely recommend Bon Sushi as a family-friendly restaurant.
Nomnom
Great sushi. Fresh, tasty, and reasonably priced. This might just be our new go-to sushi place.

First visit was satisfactory. This was my first visit and food was tasty. Came for lunch and service was quick but they weren't "overly" friendly (maybe our table of 5 had too many questions?) I'll definitely go again, though. Had a bento box and maybe I'll try a few of the rolls next time.

I am beyond impressed with this restaurant. The food was outstanding, service was quick and it was very reasonably priced. I would recommend this place to anyone in the area. Absolutely phenomenal.

Second time not so good. Consistency is important. On this trip, our fish didn't taste as fresh, rice was crumbly, etc., and the seasonings were off. Still very edible, but disappointing for sure. Hope this was just an off night.

-----23 May, 2011-----

Sushi rice done right. I went to Bon for the first time the other day since I didn't want to go downtown to eat. What an awesome decision. The sushi rice was soft, well-seasoned and still warm, a perfect pillow for the fish. The winning roll of the night was by far the spicy scallop (which comes with avocado), but the crispy agedashi tofu and sesame-y goma-ae performed very well also. Service was friendly and sincere, and dishes arrived promptly. Also great tea! My only issue was that some of the rolls were a little too stuffed with crab, which overpowered some other flavours, but I suspect there aren't many in my camp. I love Bon Sushi!

One of the best in town because of service, and the food will have you dreaming of sushi.
A Fat Bloke
Decent Place in a Food Desert. Nicely prepared and presented food. Sushi and sashimi are fresh and excellent (Soft shell crab and dynamite roll in particular). Miso is very tasty. Teriyake is subtly tasty as opposed to the salty soy-over thickened gloop more commonly served in this town.
Service is friendly, though a little inexperienced I feel. There was a slight feeling that they were uneasy!
Food is usually pretty quick. This is a nice little restaurant, and a welcome addition in an area that is depressingly lacking in decent food.

Bon is not just good, it's great!. I heard rumours of a Bon Sushi opening up in the Royal Oak Shopping Centre and had to try out their fare. I was pleasantly surprised with how delicious and generous the portions were. The Lunch Bento A with 2 gyoza, 4-piece cali roll, teriyaki beef, rice, miso and choice of seaweed salad was a bargain at $7.90. The Soft Shell Crab roll had a generous portion crab for just $8.95, the price you would pay for just the same dish minus the sushi rice. I cannot wait to try the rest of their "fusion" menu. This restaurant is defnitely a crowd pleaser! What a nice addition to the Royal Oak area.

Fabulous Everytime!. Ever since my first visit at Bon Sushi in the Royal Oak shopping centre (close to the time when it just opened), I have been going back on a regular basis because I just love it! It is so good that I find myself going there once a week sometimes =) They have some unique rolls (the "Imperial" roll and "Hot Night" roll are my absolute favorites!) that keep me (and my husband and co-workers) coming back for more! I find that the service and quality of sushi is consistently good. The ambiance in this location of Bon Sushi is also very nice. The only suggestion for improvement that I have is for them to offer wild sockeye salmon for their sashimi...and then it would be the PERFECT sushi restuarant in town! I would highly recommend this location of Bon Sushi - for lunch or dinner!
Miss K.
Had take away sushi from Bon Sushi last week and it was excellent. The fish was very fresh and well prepared, and there was a great selection too. I would recommend Bon Sushi to anyone looking for reasonably priced good sushi!
