Victoria Best Fish&Chips. Fresh and Crunchy Fish, thick cut potato chips always make me eat over full. Old style bench seats and old English decorative metal plate around the wall making me go back to the old times. Love it.
Total tourist, was looking for good fish 'n chips near where I was staying. Came upon this restaurant prompting the English style fish fare. I ordered a glass of their beer on tap (wish I could remember the name, it was really good) along with the one piece halibut with poutine (instead of regular chips).
The coleslaw was decent but not amazing, homemade tartar sauce was yummy and nice to have a few peas on the plate too. The poutine was made with REAL cheese curds and was great, they definitely have good home cut fries. And the halibut, not the typical greasy, crunchy batter, it was light and allowed the taste of the fish to come through. I loved it! Would definitely recommend this place. Oh, and all of that cost $20 (incl a generous tip).
This place is GREAT! Ignore the older reviews, this place is under new management. I had two piece fish with an upgraded fries (changed it to a poutine, for a small charge) and it was awesome! Their iced tea is wonderful. Just go check it out and you'll see!
Fantastic little place with some of the best fish & chips I've had in years!
Disregard the negative reviews from the past...this place is under completely new management as of January 2013 and they've been making some amazing improvements not only to the menu, but the entire atmosphere of the restaurant.
Today my wife and I were served by the new owner himself. Incredibly personable fellow who obviously loves what he does, and that pride shows in his restaurant.
If you want some amazing food in a gorgeous city, you owe it to yourself to check this place out!
PS...try the breaded halibut sliders...they're beyond phenomenal!

Hidden Gem. I kept hearing mixed feedback regarding this place, and found out that it has recently switched ownership a few months ago - so it was time to check it out.
I have to say I thouroughly enjoyed it! Love the English feel and the food was fantastic. It's always nice to see that an English styled pub actually has an English owner as well, the food is very authentic. If that's what you're looking for then I would recommend this place - a hidden away gem in victoria!
Had a delicious meal here and would definitely go back! The halibut, tartar sauce and chips were perfect. The new owners are doing a great job at keeping lots of the same menu that people love and adding new and exciting British fare. I can't wait to go back to try the Yorkshire!!
Great fish and chips, light batter and real potatoes! Mushy peas were the best I've tasted in Canada (apart from mine of course!). Staff 'very' friendly and food freshly cooked and hot.
It was good! The fish and chips were great, a tad on the expensive side but not by much. I would definitely eat here again.

Delicious!. My boyfriend had mentioned wanting to check Old Vic Fish & Chips out once since we frequent a store near to it, but we had just never got around to it since I don't normally like seafood.
The restaurant is in a some-hundred year old building that used to have ships built/maintained in it-- and has this decor of old British things, guaranteed someone in your family has one of the old Brass plates hanging on the wall.
The service was excellent, we went in between lunch and dinner rushes and there was really only 3 or 4 other patrons inside. The waitress was a joy of a jokester, and also brought us the old guest books to look through while we waited for our food.
The food was amazing, I had chicken fingers, fries and gravy-- being a picky eater this is what I have most any quicker-food restaurant and it was hands down the most enjoyable I've had. The chicken was moist, the breading wasn't too dry or crumbly, the fries were exactly what you want and expect for " 'n Chips" and their vegetarian brown gravy blew me back-- who know vegetarians had good food? So I've learned. My boyfriend had the 2 piece halibut 'n chips and also gushed about his food.
It's 100% worth it to check out just for the experience of checking out the old building and meeting the staff, and 200% worth it to check out for the food-- next time I go back I'm going to try fish and chips, something this picky eater hasn't had in almost 10 years.
Found out about Old Vic's via a brochure @ Buchart Gardens... The food was "nom nom nom" yummy! Our waitress Eve was EXCELLENT and quite the character!!

Great local restaurant. Staff were great despite the language barrier. Sad to see the place closing on January 28. The staff mentioned something about the possibility about opening up in another location. Stay tuned for updates. Fish and chips were great.
Owners are super friendly and welcoming. Fish is solid. Chips are bang on. Now I'm super curious how delicious their Chinese food is. Two full halibuts means it needs a bit more tartar sauce. 😋
All I can say is... WOW!! My girlfriend and I visited while on holiday in Victoria. Based on the LOOK of the food in other review photos, I knew this place would be the real deal. After walking by the restaurant by accident, we marched in. Immediately, we were greeted by the very friendly lady of the house who let us sit wherever we liked. An enthusiastic "YES!" was the response when I asked if they carried Mushy Peas to go with our Fish N' Chips. That was a great sign right there. A few minutes later, a lovely presentation of a meal was delivered to our table with a smile. The food was SUPER FRESH (we were informed that it was still Halibut Season) and the chips were dynamite!!!
If you like fresh food, with an authentic British style, along with a wonderful dining experience... Then go here, now!! Super happy we did, and I'm sure you will as well 😊

perfect fish and chips. I ordered a combo for 2. It is more than enough for two people. it comes with tartar sauce and coleslaw. the staff is also really nice.
Ordered the combo for two, lots of food, my girlfriend and I couldn’t finish it. The environment is nice, so does the staff. The food is ok.
You can stand in line outside with a bunch of tourists at the famous fish and chips place or you can go to the cheaper, local spot. The owner is super nice and excitedly told me that they had halibut back in stock so I got one piece plus fries for $14. It was super yummy and the fries were perfect.
Highly recommended. They accept credit cards.

Not a fancy restaurant, but clean and family friendly service in a heritage style building. The best fish and chips we've had in BC. Two generous portions of halibut with the perfect batter, in house tartar sauce, and fries for $19.99. More food than I could eat in one sitting, and better quality food for less dollars than Milestones hands down.

We ordered the dinner for 4 fish and chips. We were not disappointed! The fish was moist and flakey. The batter was light and a nice crunch, as were the prawns.
Great fries, nice and crisp!
Delivered with ALL the condiments, (both white & malt vinegar, ketchup, tatar sauce, lemon, s&p) plus napkins & utensils, all packaged separately. It was really nice to find.
We look forward to trying other items off the menu soon.
Best fish and chips I’ve had yet, in Victoria! Great portion size of fish, tartar sauce was delicious and fries too. I would say this is comparable, if not better than, Red Fish Blue Fish - without the crazy lineups. 🙂
Our family loved the great fish and chips meal. Hutton whiskey sign caught our eye. The Hutton family!we didn't take pictures inside. We were at butchart gardens and city hall.
Can't say enough how wonderful the owners are. Of course good food is why you want to eat out but the service has to be equally as good. Here at Old Vic fish and chips the service is awesome. The owner is so wonderful she makes it feel like your visiting their home. Her husband has trained overseas and knows what fish and chips should taste like. We have tried both the fish and chips and the chinese food and are impressed with both. We love the warm welcome and will continue to support these wonderful owners who make eating out fun. I've been back several times just for a box of those delicious hand cut fries. Just don't tell my wife.
Sensational fish and chips. Honestly I found the experience of eating this truly blissful. I love fish and chips and I have eaten a lot of it over the years and I thought the cod and chips was amazing. Great, speedy, friendly, service. Great location as well. Just all round great!

Some of the best fish and chips I've had since moving back from England. The batter was perfect, the wings succulent, the fish juicy and scrumptious, prawns and spring rolls fantastic and the fries oh the fries!!!! Lovely people there as well
