Review Sushi Plus Restaurant - Victoria

William Song
I moved to Victoria for a year and had tried different sushi restaurants. Sushi Plus is by far the best one I have experienced. It's a warm and cozy dining environment and with authentic Japanese cuisine and decoration. Great service and good value as well, and I will keep going until maybe one day moving back to mainland.

Authentic Japanese fare, at affordable prices and the best damn sunomono in Victoria. The place is straight out of Japan, mom and pop shop. Meal pictured was 6$ and although the sushi is presented roughly it’s actually quite charming. Plus the wasabi is legit. Best casual Japanese eatery in Vic!

If you're after a fancy atmosphere don't come here. But this place is extremely memorable and has serious character and charm, in my opinion. Great hand drawn menus, fun art and miscellaneous things on the walls. The prices are seriously great, and you shouldn't expect the finest sushi the city had to offer. That said I think the sushi was totally satisfying and adequate for my taste. Really friendly family that run the place. The combinations on the menu are a steal!

This is hands-down my favourite Japanese restaurant in Victoria for authenticity. It is small and cozy, but the staff are all Japanese and the food and atmosphere is very authentic like what I was used to at street food shops in Japan. The menu has a great selection of Japanese treats written and illustrated by the staff and they take great pictures of the food and post them as specials by your table. I've been here probably a hundred times and never had bad service or bad food. Best of all the prices are super cheap!

Hidden gem : To all the naysayers, go buy some overpriced sushi at Azuma (where it isn't even fresh and you have to hunt down your waiter). This little sushi spot has been my go-to place for over 4 years, and I remember when i first walked by it I thought "oh I'd get food poisoning from that place it looks iffy" and when I tried my first sushi there it was like a whole different world. The rolls are fresh, the meat is real and the servers are the kindest people ever. The ambiance is amazing, you feel calm as they play really nice instrumental Japanese music and they are quick to refill your tea/water whenever you need it. Their combo specials are killer and you can easily get a huge banquet of sushi for like 30$. Who cares if some rolls are oddly shaped? Its all about the taste and experience in my books, not esthetics. Also their Miso is really great too. 10/10 would recommend you try this place! :)

Probably the best value restaurant in town. Sushi snobs stay away. Good vegetarian options. Odd choices some times, such as firm tofu for agedashi tofu, but tasty overall. The staff is friendly and the place has a lot of character. Hole-in-the-wall goodness.

I'm so glad to see they have reopened after the pandemic! They're safety precautions for dining in the restaurant are great! It's my favorite sushi restaurant in Victoria! ☆ Absolutely delicious food, the batter on the tempura was so light and flakey. Large selection of bowls and rolls, lots of combination plates to choose from! The rolls were fresh and tasty, generous portions for great prices. Fantastic vegetarian options too! Their specials menus are also super cute- hand drawn by the staff! I definitely suggest checking it out

Absolutely love visiting this location! My family has been enjoying the good eats at Sushi Plus for many years now. The service is outstanding and the servers are always so awesome with accommodating to any special requests :) we visit every week and have made many friends coming to this location. The food is nothing like else where in Victoria :)

Fantastic little authentic hole in the wall Sushi place. I usually stop by once a week for my Sushi, sashimi and tempura lunch combo. Fantastic value for the food you get. The only thing keeping me from rating them higher is the limited open timeframes (they don't open for lunch until noon) and the fabric chairs need to be reupholstered/cleaned better. The chairs have been around for a while and they look it! Staff are very friendly though and the food is good!

Delicious fresh sushi, good vegetarian options, wonderful staff.

Oh Sushi Plus....I've been going here since I was about 12 years old. 20 years of sushi plus. I would leave town for a year or two and come back and the staff would still say "Combo A and a coke?" to me. I love this this little joint but unfortunately I also really love great sushi, and you can't find it at Sushi Plus. There are a few delicious rolls but avoid nigiri and sashimi. Their rice bowls aren't bad either. Even for being reasonably priced food, I would say that for the most part, the discount doesn't compensate for the lack of quality. <br/><br/>The ambience is fun and seasonal and a lot of time goes into the decorations. The hygiene of the front end needs attention. The removal of the carpet several years ago was a good move. The chair need to be replaced with something with no fabric as the tempura oil in the air stains everything. If you sit on those chairs, you will smell like a deep fried yam until you wash your clothes and have a shower. <br/><br/>The service is always quick and courteous. The staff however are not that allergy aware. My son has a severe egg allergy and I ordered an array of food after telling the staff this only to find out when I was picking it up that there was actually egg powder in the tempura batter. <br/><br/>I think this little joint is going to keep chugging along and pulling back regulars like me for years to come but a few easy changes and upgrades would make a world of difference.

After reading some of the other reviews of this place I just had to try it, there were all these mentions of great value etc.. <br/>Well with "Bang4Buck" as a handle I just had to know.<br/><br/>Wow,...well, first off the good,...the food tasted really fine and everything seemed perfectly fresh.<br/><br/>but as other have mentioned here, the preparation was so poorly done, really, like children, young children would make in some kind of class or lesson.<br/>The rolled pieces were all different sizes and shapes and ranged from tightly rolled to falling apart,...I don't even know how that is possible as the pieces I had all had the same ingredients and were from the same roll.<br/>The sashimi was so roughly cut I'm sure I could do better with a butter knife,...really?,...can't keep a knife sharp?.<br/><br/>So I'm conflicted on this one,...certainly the quality of the ingredients and nutritional value are here,...and the prices are the BEST in town from what I saw.<br/><br/>So obviously tho, the preparation/presentation of a meal is a huge factor in a dining experience.<br/>I honestly can't remember having had such a bipolar eating experience.<br/><br/>For some this might work fine, even me if I was putting myself thru Uni still for instance,...but I'm not, and now, more than ever I appreciate all the other elements of dining out. <br/><br/>As crazy as this reads, this place is a long sharp $20 knife and a cook who cares away from having people lined up down the sidewalk.

The best value for sushi in Victoria, hands down. The sushi rolls may not be the most visually appealing, so if that's a deal breaker then stay away. However, for everyone else, this is great stuff. Staff are nice, and the place is much more authentic than most Japanese restaurants in Victoria.

I have been dining at sushi plus for more than five years. It is  my favorite sushi restaurant in town. Some of my friends doesn't like it at all. But I think it has good food that I am willing to come back for it. The price and variety of food is great. Tempura are much better than most sushi restaurant in town, because for a cheap price you get assorted vegie and prawns but not only sweet potatoes and a little bit more of something in other places. Sunomono, Rice bowl, tempura, Sushi roll are good and in a greater proportion compare to other places. <br/>I have tried almost all sushi place in town from high-end to take-out , and I used to work in a sushi restaurant. But I take this place as my favorite place in town. <br/>Cons: no air conditioner in summer !!!! decoration are so crowded, sushi are not in a proper round shape, table arrangement and seating are not pleasant.

Been going here for years. I love this place. Ugly decor, poor food presentation, insanely good prices, and the food tastes great (granted I'm a vegetarian so cannot speak for the meat). The owners know me and my husband, and are always friendly and remember our orders. We are crazy about their sunumono salad and order it every time. We've been regulars for. probably 10yrs now. The walls are plastered in adorable cartoon drawings and menu items.

I have been a regular here for a few years now. This is not a place to go if you want super high class sushi. This is a place to go if you want to feel like you were invited into someone's kitchen for dinner. The price point is low and the food is homemade. The pickled mushrooms are what made me a regular, seriously best things ever. I recommend this restaurant whole heartedly! Go in with an open mind and you won't be disappointed.
Hello
Cheap... Children Severs & Sloppy Food. You get what you pay for. The servers were prompt and polite but too young for service. The food comes quick, but looks horrible. The flavors were there and I am still alive. I will probably go back, but would NEVER bring a friend.

Food Was Disappointing and Gross. I ordered the spicy tuna and sashimi combo and it was truly horrible.<br/><br/>They had so little tuna in the sushi roll and so much mayo. And to top it off, the rolls were sloppily rolled and almost came apart upon picking it up with the chopsticks. Then the sashimi was soooo bad that I couldn't even eat it because it was not fresh at all. I think it had gone bad and they still served it and the sashimi pieces were very tiny too... <br/><br/>We came to this restaurant because of the high rating on Urbanspoon but were very disappointed with the quality. I would advise people to think carefully before coming here. Yes the price is cheap but considering portion size is small and the quality is severely lacking you're probably better off going somewhere else and paying a couple bucks more.

Had the spicy combo, tasted great, good value, but looked like it was put together by a 5 year old

Delicious Sushi. It's an amazing deal, $5.75 with tax included for 10 pcs of sushi, miso soup, and green tea; it also tastes good. The only drawback is presentation, sometimes the rolls fall apart; personally, I didn't mind, the price and taste both outweighed that aspect. I also tried ordering a chicken rice bowl, it was OK; the Sushi is definitely the best thing about this place.

Long time customer. The owner knows my regular order so with just a nod and "the usual" exchanged I sit, pull out a book and wait for my food. Soon tea arrives.<br/><br/>I am admittedly not a seafood fan so the sunomono salad with imitation crab suits me well. I get it in a large size and the vinegar is more sweet than tart and just has a faint flavor so not overpowering the dish. <br/><br/>I like the yam tempura rolls as they are crispy and warm. Granted the rice is loose and does fall apart easily.

This is by far the best value for your money sushi restaurant possibly on the entire Island.

Half thumbs up..... Interesting place.....the sushi tasted very good.....but the presentation was pretty bad. At first when we saw the sushi we were kind of shocked as it was not rolled tightly and almost falling apart. However, it tasted very good, so I would recommend it.....just don't expect a proper Japanese presentation.

Ridiculously cheap but you get what you pay for... They cannot roll sushi, it falls apart instantly. Avoid anything with chicken/beef in it because it's the poorest quality. Good tempura and vegetarian rolls, a lot of options.

Super cheap and tasty! Food was good and cheap. Service and presentation wasn't the best, but for the price and the taste of the food I would totally go back!
Bikeboy
Charming little hole in the wall, inexpensive, but you get what you pay for. The quality of the fish was not very high (extensive use of fake crab, fish scraps). Biggest complaint: the presentation. The rolls looked terrible - as if the chef had Parkinson's disease. Bottom line: ok if you're on a budget, don't expect a feast for your eyes.

Sushi minus. My boyfriend and I experienced the worst meal we have ever endured. It first started off with my boyfriend and I being sat at a dirty table that wasnt even set (and never even got cleaned), then we were given tea by a server who was holding the tea by the rim of the cup( a serving no no). Second we ordered basic sushi yam tempura roll, tuna roll and a California roll. This came with a sunomono salad and miso soup. The miso soup tasted like it was just super salty water with dirty dish water for colouring and the sunomono salad tasted like rice noodles bathed in vinegar, they were both just awful. Third we get the sushi, the sushi looked like a 8 year old rolled it, as if you showed a picture of sushi to an kid and told them to make it. not to mention it tasted awful and came with things in it that weren't even ordered. such as egg and avacado in a "yam" tempura roll, all I wanted was yam. The rice was like paste and left a milky film on my fingers from picking it off. Dont even get me started about the fish, It looked like turkey giblets covered in mayonnaise. Im scared to even think about how the food was handled or if the fish was even refrigerated. Over all It was the worst experience and meal my boyfriend and I have ever had. I could have easily made better sushi. what a joke of a sushi place.

Best sushi place in town!. I love this little place. The cute hand-made decor and delicious, cheap-as-borscht food keeps me coming back every time. It's true that the presentation isn't always stellar, sometimes the rolls are a bit loose, but who cares really? Go eat here. Don't expect a high-end atmosphere or polished service and you'll love it.

The place doesn't look like much, but the food is VERY affordable and yummy! I've been here on the weekdays and its always been good service.

Really hit and miss. The owner is great and always friendly, always busy, sushi is usually pretty great but other dishes are only so-so and the waitresses are usually exchange students not fluent in English yet and not super fast. If you go when it's not business lunch time and have a sushi combo it will be great. If you go at lunch M-F it will take forever, it might not be right, and quality will be poor. Usually.

Terrible, terrible food. I feel terrible for giving such a negative review but the food really is terrible. I have a hard time believing the food is actually prepared by Japanese people as this was the worst Japanese food experience I have ever had.
EricG
Very disappointed given the reviews. Service was atrocious and the rolls didn't even hang together. The sashimi was good, but it should be in Aug. Yea, it was cheap. But it wasn't worth it.

Poor Presentation, Yummy Food. Okay, you might be a little nervous when you walk in. "What have I gotten myself into, look at this place!"<br/><br/>Even when the food arrives to your table, you may groan and wonder if what you're about to eat is going to make you sick.<br/><br/>All of that will wash away when you start popping some sushi in your mouth. While the presentation of the business (and even the food) can look a little iffy, there is so much flavour here.<br/><br/>They have my favourite dynamite roll in the city (avocado instead of cucumber, why isn't this a standard!?) and their bento boxes are quite good.<br/><br/>Loads of character (see their hand-drawn pictures of food on the walls) and always a welcoming staff.<br/><br/>Could be a little faster.<br/><br/>Try: Dynamite Roll

Casual japanese lunch. The prices of food are very reasonable. Lots of choices on sushi rolls, and very casual and laid back feel to the restaurant. The owner is a great person who does everything, from decorating food pictures to making sushi. It is nice to support restaurants whose owners put lots of heart in the products that they produce.

Great fresh sushi, great staff who always greet you and very well priced.

Cheap and amazing. My favourite place downtown for sushi! They have an economy menu which is basically a menu of combos. For about $5 you can get two rolls of sushi and a bowl of sunomono salad or miso soup. There is a large variety of rolls to choose from. My boyfriend and I usually don't pay more than $15 combined and we both get soup and several rolls to choose from. They also serve genmaicha tea which is my favourite!

Another food treasure.. This is a crazy little hole-in-the-wall sushi place. It is all about the food and not the decor! The food is affordable and fresh. They should call it Fast Sushi Plus. They get your meal or take-out to you faster than any place in town. Great portions. Great flavours.

In my sunomono salad ($1.75), the vinegar didn't overpower the ingredients but it did not enhance them either. It was all rather bland. To make matters worse, the disposable chopsticks from Touch Industries Sushi Plus left on my table were leaving a undesirable wooden taste in my mouth. This might've been due to the chopsticks being kept in storage for too long.
