Review My Thai Cafe - Victoria

Chris Haynes
We commissioned Jared and Patcharin to cater our wedding and we couldn't have been more delighted with them! The food was excellent, really creative, beautifully displayed, and the price was really reasonable. Everyone at the wedding agreed: Big recommend!

On our visit to Victoria, we were looking to have some papaya salad and without many choices, we found this place. The co-owner Jared was a very friendly and gracious host. We ordered a few dishes they Nom Tokyo, chicken red curry and the papaya salad; that we had been looking for. We order it all Thai Hot as we like it spicy; the food was absolutely delicious and spicy (not as hot as we would like but will do.. lol). This was a great place to eat in a nice neighborhood. Give a try as local or a traveler Thank you Jared and your lovely partner for all the great food..

It’s been a while since I’ve had such a tasty pad Thai, it felt house made. Dishes may take some time to be prepared, however their quality are worth the time. Warning: hotness level of the dishes are high. I consider myself a person that eats hot food and the regular hot (non the Thai-hot) disabled me for ~15 min. The service was excellent.

First time trying my Thai, and it was fantastic. Maybe a bit on the pricy side, but portions were large, and we had lots of leftovers. The flavors were amazing, and service was friendly. We'll definitely be back

Excellent food. Phenomenal flavour palate. The papaya salad is out of this world! Also, on a side note, the best paper straw I’ve ever used. Never got soggy! 10/10.

Great local eatery. Lunch menu prices are really reasonable, generous portions and include soup and a spring roll. My partner did a fried egg add-on for an additional cost and it was great on the rice dish. Thai iced tea was decent, a little bit on the sweet side but not bad. Their pad Thai sauce is a little on the sour side for me and their mild seems a bit spicy (I would personally get no spice in my future visits). Hence the 4 stars.

It's a small but great place to eat Thai food. Jared is also very helpful and friendly. Careful when ordering Thai original spiciness, I thought western food can never be spicy but they are truly as spicy as chili padi.

Ordered mild prawn pad thai, spring rolls, large peanut sauce and side of jasmine rice. Generous portion of pad thai, deliciously balanced. Spring rolls were real good, peanut sauce was awesome.

What a beautiful place set in a little cute area of town in Victoria. After purposefully getting lost in locating a little place for dinner, I was pleasantly greeted by a very professional and polite and welcoming young man. I was happy to hear him welcome me and when I asked for take out he politely handed me I menu and took my order. After I sat he professionally offered me some water and even poured it for me which shows the etiquette of serving tables as being very impressive. I was delighted and felt at home immediately as I waited for my food. Upon returning home and opening my food I was eager to taste the flavors for I had asked for as spicy as possible. As I enjoyed my food I realize that this was a wonderful meal that had rich flavors, spiced and the right amount of temperature in spice as well as temperature of food. I would recommend this place and would only caution that though it is a small establishment it is huge in flavor and good quality food. My compliments to the chef.

The food was amazing and some of the dishes were more like fusion food, but turned out great. The owner was friendly as well.

Spent $50 on delivery. None of the dishes tasted anything like Thai food. Who puts brocolli and cauliflower on fried rice in Thailand?

The delivery service was quick and polite though.

Lovely robust flavours, rich mouth feel and attention to detail in ingredients, actual cooking and customer experience. I really like this place! Many Thai restaurants fall victim to generic curry flavouring with only modest attention to ingredients and presentation. Others deliver subtlety, coyness in serving sizes and attempt an accuracy impossible with local sourcing. I think My Thai falls victim to none of this. If you want rich flavours, delicious use of local ingredients and attention to how to cook seafood and vegetables, this is your place. If you want overpriced "authenticity" and only mincing attention to your appetite, look elsewhere. If you want satisfaction and a blaze of taste and texture, come back to My Thai again and again!

I just had a very disappointing take-out experience! I ordered the Ped Kee Mao (roasted duck), the Salmon Panang curry, and the Pad Thai Goong. When I arrived to the restaurant to pick-up my order the kitchen had forgotten to make it, so I had to wait an additional 25 minutes for the order to be prepared. When I got home with the food, "sorry no duck" was written on the Pad Kee Mao, and instead there was over-cooked chicken. On the Panang Curry, "sorry no salmon" was written, and it was substituted for a white fish. I payed full price for all the dishes, despite the fact that cheaper meats were substituted. Upon opening the two dishes they were also half full. I sincerely feel I should have been told when I went to pay that substitutions had been made to my order, and the price of the meal should have adjusted accordingly.

I've been looking for great Thai restuarant and found this is the best. I had Spring rolls, Tom yam goong and Phad thai with my friend whose mother is Thai, very satisfied with foods. Server was very friendly and kind, so busy that all the service was a bit slow. I recommend taking out or dining in when the restuarant isn't so busy.@

One of the best, if not the best, in town. So yummy!!! My partner and I love our thai food, and we go to many different places in town. This one usually takes the cake. Its so good and the services is great. No complaints about this place!!

Gone Downhill. We used to get takeout from My Thai and were always pleased. That was NOT the case this evening. The pad Thai was barely edible. It was salty. The beef was so tough you couldn't chew it. The chicken one had hardly any chicken. Most of it went in the trash. So disappointed to lose our local Thai place. We think it has changed ownership or chef.

The best in victoria. So far I have found My Thai Cafe to he the best Thai food I have had in Victoria. The restaurant isn't much to look at but the staff are friendly and food is tasty!!!

Is it the same?. I live close to My Thai and sometimes drop in on my own for seafood pad thai. I went again yesterday and ordered my usual but it wasn't the same. It had much less seafood and it didn't have quite the same flavour. I'm not saying not good but not great the way it was. I am wondering if they have a new owner or chef or have decided to cheap out a bit. I hope not.

I gave it a second try. My dinner partner agreed that the pad thai is just not good anymore.

Excellent!. Their food, prices, and service are wonderful. Hard to beat the $9.50 lunch special for its value - a small bowl of soup, a delicious spring roll, and a selection of excellent main courses. Always leave full. Absolutely love this place. Keep up the great work!

Vegetarian green curry is the best I've had. My friend and I were regulars until an obnoxious gentleman started working. We tried to let the bad service go because the food is so good but the last time was our final straw he treated us so poorly we walked out before being seated.

BEST PAD THAI EVER. I have had many a pad thai in my day, and this is, BY FAR, the best pad thai I've ever had. Victoria's thai food situation is less than ideal, but this place is a wonderful exception.

Reaffirming my support for this humble, little family owned Thai eatery. It's not the extravagant multi-course affair seen at more upscale Thai restaurants. Just great Thai home cooking at great prices. The lunch specials, which include a spring roll and soup, are a fantastic deal, ringing in at under $10. Overall this place is the best bang for the buck when it comes to Thai cuisine in Greater Victoria. Always friendly, efficient service.

Very good Thai food. Had red curry, cashews and veggies, and fried rice with tofu. All very tasty. Have gone back a few times for eat-in and take-out. Always great service.

Excellent take-out service, wonderful food! We look forward to ordering again soon...

Best kept secret.... One of those places that looks like a bit of a hole in the wall, that has the best Thai food in Victoria. Casual ambience, and great value without sacrificing any flavour. They have a large menu, the best spring rolls in town, and they have very personable service. My favourite dish is the Salmon Panang, but all are great!

Best chicken pad thai ever. I love the service here and i always have trouble deciding what I want to order. The pad Thai is exceptional and their soups are amazingly simple and wonderful.

Best Thai restaurant in Victoria. Attentive service and very generous. Nice people. The restaurant is cute and every time I go I get a lunch combo and have never been disappointed. The combos come with soup and egg rolls and is a great deal. The soup tastes healthy and fresh. I also like their ice tea.

Great Place. I have been here multiple times and the food is always excellent and the service is great.

Delicious Dinner!. One of our group of three has a severe egg allergy yet was able for the first time to enjoy chicken spring rolls as these are made with rice flour and no eggs. We all ordered different entrees, raving about each dish . Our server was knowledgable and gave outstanding service. My Thai is a Victoria treasure.

Yummy in my tummy. The service was fast, the food was delicious (we had the lunch special C2) and the price was juuuuuust right!
Mmmmm

Good Stuff!. I really like this place! The red curry is awesome, and the spring rolls from scratch are delicious! The owner, 'Lek', is a sweetheart (so is her staff). It's nothing fancy, but the value is absolutely there. Everyone I know that has tried 'My Thai' has appreciated it. For a 'hole-in-the-wall' thai joint...this place is the BEST.

Have been for dinner twice- seafood pad thai and salmon curry are both favorites and reasonably priced with good portions. Large menu and you can choose how hot you want the dishes. Service is spotty - they easily recognize you if you've been before-but sometimes need prompting to bring items ordered. Many tables and good hours except closed Sundays.
Tila
Not the tastiest pad Thai...quite bland and lacked flavour. Service needs improvement as well.

Lunch was great, price was amazing. New Friday lunch spot!!!!

My wife and I havebeen here twice for lunch. Both times we had the same dishes so I can't comment on much of a range. When we find dishes we like we tend to stick with a known good thing. I have the red coconut curry with chicken. The coconut seems to be thicker and richer than I am accustomed to. They may use a better quality coconut milk than others. My wife has a dish with chicken, bell peppers onion and basil. The vegetables seem to be very fresh and high quality. When she ordered the above regular-menu dish at lunch (#15), the bill was less than we expected. The same dish is on the lunch menu at a lower price so they charged her the lower price. Good food. Good service. Fair prices. We will be back again today.

Victoria lacks a good, signature Thai restaurant. Although we have several ones, none of them raises. They tend to attack the cheap section of the market rather than offer us the greatness of that the Thai cuisine can be. My Thai Cafe sits towards the bot

Thai cuisine is another of those ubiquitous ethnic imports that now seems to mark every strip mall and restaurant district in most Canadian cities. Victoria has a few, some good, a lot not so good. One of the better Thai places in town is My Thai Cafe on
