Review Fry's Bakery - Victoria

Jonah Koebernick
Absolutely delicious, been there a few times now and everything has been great. Unlike some other reviews the bread was baked perfectly, very moist and chewy crust but not hard by any means. What people may not realize is you still have to store it in an airtight container once you get home or it will get very hard on the outside like every bread… Would highly recommend the bread, pretzels, and pastries. The donuts were just okay, I would pass on them and just go to a donut shop.

My friend Paul , who is a baker at the slow rise, bakery in Gabriola highly recommended this bakery. I researched it online and look at the history and was very impressed. Gratta greeted me with a beautiful smile and was very patient with me as I was deciding for different treats for my family. I saw lots of people coming in and out with Pizza and I look forward to that next time. The quality of this bakery is top notch. I got to enjoy a coffee from the neighbour Spiral Cafe and enjoyed my apple fritter. My next time it Victoria West will include this bakery for sure. Highly recommended.

What a lovely place with to-die-for goodies! The place sure gets busy and sometimes you need to stand in line outside, as the place only fits 1-3 people inside. Really cool that you’re able to see the staff working on the baked goods/ breads.
Same Same but Different
We were 2nd in line, a line that wrapped around the corner, so what do you order - "one of everything please". The donut is insane. The Breakfast in Bed is crunchy throughout. The blackberry danish oozes blackberries, napkin needed! There is a reason why there is always a line. This was a Sunday haul.

This is by far the best bakery in Victoria area for bread baguette pastry pretzel.

There is so much heart in this little bakery. It looks like staff enjoy working there. Lots of smiles and singing!! And wonderful bread of course. My favourite is probably the classic pain rustique but I like anything I try. Pizza Sundays are the best. Handpies are delightful. I can't say enough good things. I am here all the time, and so is the rest of the city judging by the line-up.

I ate an apple fritter and it was one of the best pastries I have ever had, and I don’t usually like apple fritters. We came on a Sunday and had a few pizzas and everything was great, but did I mention the apple fritter? 10/10

A delicious bakery where you have to wait in line to buy. The friendly reception of the clerk and the delicious bread make you feel better.

We like seeking out great bakeries when we travel, and Fry's was on our list in Victoria. We bought the focaccia bread, crossant, pretzel, and breakfast in bed. Everything was awesome. I particularly loved the breakfast in bed, and the focaccia. We came back again on a Saturday around 2:30 pm, and the shop was pretty much empty. So if you want to have choices, come early. Cash or debit only.

Hands down the best bakery in Victoria! The vegetarian hand pies are incredibly well seasoned. This week I had a potato chickpea curried one-stellar, and last week were French lentils with celeriac... They are all different and all delicious. I eat the onion focaccia in the car before I get home..Yum

Really good German rye bread (I just moved here from Germany ten months ago, so my taste buds were in for a treat) and baguettes! The opening times make it hard for me to come here but it's always worth it!

Everything is delicious. Their Sunday pizzas are a real treat!

Best bakery in Victoria, hands down. Consistently incredible pastries and amazing bread. It’s so popular there’s basically always a line, which is a bummer, as it seems like they could manage it a bit more efficiently. Worth the wait, but we often give up if it’s really busy.

Not usually one to write reviews. I've grown up with my parents owning a French bakery and man, this bread/croissants and pastries are out of this world!

Great rustic olive bread today. And simply lovely pizza. Easy walk to Bamfield Park where there is a picnic table under the trees. Also a table in the children's playground :).

I wish I lived in Victoria for the sole purpose of being close to this bakery. So delicious. Friendly staff. Highly recommend this spot!!

Best bakery in town across a number of products. The pastries are perfection (Breakfast in Bed is simply an experience), great pretzels, amazing breads, and Pizza Sunday is worth traveling for.

Oh man, so good! I’m eternally grateful that this place is just down the street!

I travelled 168km for the Rye bread..... that tells you how good it is 🙂

Such nice people working there and the food is amazing! We picked up croissants and donuts and they were so good! Next time we are trying the pizza! ;)
Juliana McCorison
We have a standing order for their bread and always check out their specials. Pizza Sunday is phenomenal!
Olga Pauline
The German Rye bread is my favorite! And the Sunday Pizza is delicious! Since I'm new to the bakery, I still have many other goodies to taste.

The dark rye was so good ! Also the pretzel buns are amazing !
Claudia Danyluk
Best bread in Victoria! Took the foccacia to a party and it dissapeared before I could even put the olive oil and balsamic out! The potatoe and garlic bread was to die for with some sweet mustard and ham. And finally the flax and sesame rye was amazing with some tomatoe and poached eggs! All moist and flavourful!

Fantastic baked goods, love the bread, pizza and all

Fry's makes a variety of baked goods, including breads and buns. They also do snacks such as hand pies. I have had a few of the hand pies, I did not especially like the salmon one but the beef/brisket one was very good. My wife really really likes the pizzas they do on Sundays. It is not my style of pizza, I prefer crappy delivery pizza because I'm just being true to myself, but if you like fancy neopolitan-esque pizza then this is a good spot to have it on Sundays. The staff are also very nice. This is our local bakery and we like to get bread from it once in a while. It is homey and a great pillar of the community.

I have only the best reviews of this delicious bakery. I am only sad that my stay in Victoria was so short and I couldn't try EVERY LOAF. The pretzels themselves are outstanding, and the pastry, top grades all the way. I am a long time bakery explorer, I give it BIGTIME thumbs UP! The gal at the counter was super sweet, its a rocken artisan bakery. Charming, tiny, all hand made, no industrial buckets in this establishment!!

The most amazing buttery croissants I've ever had. Well worth the stop.

Victoria's best bread?. The pain rustique, country wheat, and the seeded or German rye are all amazing, and each are likely the best of their kind in town. The croissants are amazing too, and so are the sandwiches if you arrive early enough to get one. Fol Epi makes great bread too, but Fry's is far and away my favorite.

Not worth the money. While the pizza is good (though a touch on the greasy side), my experience with the loaves has been underwhelming. I find the crust to be too hard and nearly impossible to cut. The flavour of the bread is overwhelmingly sour. The bread looks nice aesthetically, but I feel like the texture and taste does not justify the price point ($10 for a loaf) here.

Such Good Pastries!. Oh my goodness... their sausage rolls and pain au chocolate are so good. I'm sure the other pastries are just as amazing, but I'm too addicted to try anything else. Their bread is wonderful as well, especially the raisin nut bread and pain rustique. It's a bit on the expensive side; however, it's well worth it. My only complaint is that they don't have a bread slicer. For the price you pay (almost $10 for a loaf) it would be nice to have the option to get your bread sliced.

Rude. My first visit was not pleasant, counter staff was quite rude; apparently if you don't reserve, you are pretty much out of luck. I left without a purchase and I will not return.

Expensive! and getting more so. Good bread but I find some breads to be on the expensive side, and they keep raising the price [from $6 to $7 in one go!] And quite often the loaves have large air holes .

Best bread in...Canada? Maybe.. Living in San Francisco for a couple years when I was young ruined me for bread, and I have been seeking bread that good ever since. And now, here on Vancouver Island, we have the amazing Fry's Bakery ! I can tell you it is better than anything I have had in Vancouver by far (last time I checked at least) and I am so happy! I stop by any chance I get for the bread and the pastries and the beautiful focaccia. Exceptional.

Great Bakery. Have bought goods there a few times and have never been disappointed. Their croissants and danishes are the best I have ever tasted. The pretzels are nice and the bread is to die for. I hope they keep doing cookies in the future.
Highly recommend this bakery to anyone who enjoys authentic baked goods.

Rude owner. The owner of this bakery is an extremely rude person, i will not support his business because of his terrible attitude towards other people

First of all, in response to the rude gentleman who called Fry's bread 'artisan crap' you are a jerk. I have also spent time in Europe very recently and his bread is authentic and delicious. His bakery is very new and your comments were malicious and cruel. I have been to Fry's numerous times and find his breads and pastries absolutely divine. In fact, I had a party at my place where I served his focaccia bread, baguette and sweets and everyone wanted to know where I got the goodies and bread from. Thank you Mr. Fry for all of the hard work you put into your craft; I am thrilled to have a fine bakery in the neighbourhood!

Message to the Previous Poster. Sorry that you had a bad experience with our bread. We've had an interesting time getting used to our new oven and the new climate of this bakery, as such we've had some variability in our breads. If you'd like to try another loaf, please come by the bakery and we will set you up with something lighter.

That being said, the loaf you purchased, our Whole Wheat Country, is often baked much darker as we've developed a following of european customers who prefer their loaves this way. We try to bake loaves both lighter and darker, and ask that our customers inform us which they prefer.

In the future, we'd appreciate if you brought up any quality concerns with us directly so we can mend the problem

Thanks for your feedback and we hope to see you again!

Byron

Artisan crap. I have lived in Europe for most of my life and the thing with living in Victoria is all the pretentious artisan stuff done bad.

I like to try new things so I went to Fry's bakery on Craigflower Road and bought a loaf of bread. A whole wheat bastard with 15% rye I was told. Shouldn't be too hard to make a bread you would think! When I came home and cut the loaf I was surprised because the bread was completely incinerated. Burnt to a crisp on the bottom charred bread on the inside.

I don't know about you, but it was disgusting and I threw it in the garbage.

Fry;'s bread is a waste of time and a waste of money. The 10 dollars I paid were 10 dollars too much. I think Mr. Fry should stop cremating bread in his oven. Amateur.

Byron's Brilliant Bread. A wee lad from Metchosin has proven his skill at markets and now opens his own bakery. Congratualtions, Byron. You are a young entrepreneur who deserves to have all of Victoria lining up outside your door to buy the best bread in Victoria...Your hard work has paid off. good on ya!

Best Bread & Sundries. I'd eat Fry's bread & croissants exclusively if MY WIFE didn't insist that I have a vegetable now and then. Without fail #1 breadmaker in town, and I don't want to hear any arguments because you can't argue with the truth. The end. Go here.

Best croissants I've ever had. The guy who runs this place is like a young Santa Claus. Always jolly and he has a beard that just makes you smile. I've been buying croissants off him at the Moss St. market for a few months now and they are the best croissants I've had in my, relatively short, life. I popped by the new bakery yesterday and was so happy I could finally grab a couple croissants during the week. Prices aren't bad but my problem with it is that it's pretty close to my place, which means I will have to eat there more than my waistline would like.

I have to confess, I had this for the first time at a Slow Food meeting and I have been craving it like Crazy ever since. There's something about the combination of oil, herbs & the red fife flour that made my taste buds go absolutely crazy! I am secretly stoked that this Saturday is once again my turn for an early-morning dog walk so I can combine another leisurely stroll in the park with a stop at the bakery.
