We absolutely LOVE this place !! We eat here pretty often and always enjoy the food. Very tasty dishes, lots of choices and awesome friendly staff. Great service from beginning to end. Thank you for keeping our tummy's full. Defiantly a must try. 5 Stars and Recommend Roast Meat & Sandwich Shop to everyone !!

Hi! Roast is one of the best places to go to in Victoria. The porchetta bowl is amazing, the pork is flavourful and the crackling is perfect. I love having it with the kale salad and lemon rice! If you're nearby you must go there and if you're not, make the detour, the food is too good to miss! If you need small snack get their sausage rolls, again so flavourful. You can also buy their sausage rolls frozen so you can enjoy them at home. Thanks for the great food!

Delicious food and good service! Exactly what I want from a quick food restaurant. The chicken meatball sandwich was delicious, and if you've got a bigger appetite then try one of the bowls. Lots of fresh salad toppings if that's your thing. I'll definitely be back!

Big shout out to the Roast for an amazing turkey Christmas dinner that we had ordered and picked up from them to celebrate the holidays 2020. We were so impressed and blown away with the quality and taste. You guys truly made this a special family celebration. The selection of dishes was amazing, the gravy and cranberry sauce was to die for, the veggies and turkey were traditional style. The parents were so impressed (best ever) and a big hug and cheers goes to you and the staff. We even had enough for a second Happy Holiday meal, the only thing that was added, was Omi's red cabbage.

We chose this place serendipitously. We had a sandwich, which I forgot to take a photo of, meatballs and some slaw. The meatballs don't look like much in this photo but everything was super delicious and fast. Well worth it for a quick rainy day lunch or when browsing through all the unique shops at the market. FUN!

I remembered the unique taste of chicken meat ball sandwich at Roast in 2017, was back there for lunch this week - Wow, appreciate “Roast” for Consistency- Quality- Taste & great service.

I tried the beef sandwich there with chimichurri and onion jam - it was soo tasty and satisfying. I always say that bread can make or break a sandwich and they chose the perfect bread for it. It was so soft and fresh. I'm really happy I found this place :)

I got the bowl with rice and chicken meatballs! I prefer it over the pork meatballs since it lets you taste the marinara sauce more. The flavors work well! Defs recommend for cheap eats.

This is a unique healthy meal experience not to be missed. Tender and tasty roasted meats are served in a meal box or can be ordered other ways. Nice open kitchen concept. They offer other accompanying food items for your meal too.

Truly excellent porchetta sandwich.

The food is absolutely top notch, best place to have lunch downtown. Could happily eat here multiple times a week.

wow - tried the special summer ahi poke salad box with edamame - the flavour was out of this world - so so delicious! not sure if it's on the menu all the time, but wow.

Amazing. I eat here (mostly super food salad) at least two times a week, and today tried the Poke! So, so good. Thank you!

We love the public market and were excited to try this place - for 10 bucks we both got a pretty small sandwich which we thought we flavourless .
Dry ciabatta bun with a very small amount of chewy bubblegum like meat. One had broccolini in the sandwich - which was odd. Broccoli stalks in a sandwich is unappealing . The staff was super friendly , but we won’t be back.

Roast has a cool salad box bar, a variety of sandwiches and meat options. I went for the quarter chicken and some chiccaron while my accompaniment got a meatball sub. I would describe my chicken as tasty, above average in comparison to grocery store rotisserie chickens, but not quite as good as some roasted chickens I have been served. The skin was crispy, juicy, and sticky in good ways. The meat was a touch bland but still nice and tender. I understand that the meatball sub was quite good. I did regret not trying a salad box, as you can see in my images the salad bar looks extremely fresh with a lot of great options. I found the chiccaron to be very very tough and hard to eat, quite dense. Despite these observations that are important in a balanced review, I must also say that I found their layout to be quite cool and inviting, they also had a great selection of beverages, and the staff were all very nice. I would return and am glad that they continue to thrive while a similar downtown restaurant has as-expected closed shop shortly after opening. I imagine that they can only improve. Also it is very confusing that their Canadian and American websites (there is a location in California?) are nearly the same and it's hard to notice which location you're looking at.

***Updated at the bottom***

Roast offers sandwiches, salads and bowls featuring thier roast meat selection. The line moves fast in this counter service line. The servers are friendly and efficient.

This is the best salad you will get downtown for the price. The dressings are delicious and don't taste processed. I love topping my salad of with crispy pork skin. The salad and toppings are a generous portion and I feel satisfied after I eat it. They offer interesting toppings like peppadews, a mild, sweet, mini pepper.

As for the sandwiches, I don't prefer them. This is simply because they contain a very modest meat serving. ***see update below***

Roast is one of many places to eat in the Victoria Public Market and is a nice addition to the bunch. Seating is casual, like a food court so don't plan on an intimate meal.

***UPDATE*** OCT 2017
The portions have gotten way better. I'm changing my rating from 3.5 to 4.5. Thank you to Roast for listening to the people and giving great value for our money.

I've been eating the "bowls" a lot lately. They are everything in a sandwich, minus the bread, plus two sides. Sides selections include: roasted vegetables, roasted potatoes, kale caesar, green salad. It's one of the best tasting, most cost efficient, hot, mostly healthy meals, that I can find on the go. This place is a winner!

My favorite? The porchetta bowl: roasted pork, topped with salsa verde, to-die-for crispy skin, provolone cheese and broccolini. My favorite sides are the roasted vegetables and kale caesar.

Get there for lunch while they have lots of everything. Like all good places that make fresh food every day, they might be out of roasted vegetables if you come at the end of the day.

Used to be really good when it first opened but for some reason my last couple of visit did not wow me. My roast pork sandwich was cold and the bread tasted stale.
Esdub
Yea...I tried their porchetta and it was average. I thought the price for their average porchetta is too much. Don't think I'll ever go back.

This place is my go to takeout for lunch.

Ambiance - Great little nook in the Hudson Market place.

Service - The staff is great, know their stuff and always have good recommendations when my usual is out.

Food - I've been obsessed with their Beef Sandwiches, Meatball Mondays is great, their Chili is delicious. I've had their salads a couple times, I generally prefer light dressing and both time's I've had it the box was drenched, perhaps I'll ask if the dressing can be on the side next time.

Overall I love this place, and recommend it to all my guests that visit :)

My partner and I had lunch there - he has the porchetta sandwich and I had the porchetta bowl - which came with half kale ceasar salad and half rice). We also ordered the lemonade basil drink and 2 sausages. The sandwich & bowl was tasty. Drink was very refreshing. The sausages were a little disappointing - the filling was dry and a little insipid. We would return for the sandwiches for sure. Total bill was just under $30 for two. We definitely recommend this place.

I had incredibly high hopes for Roast given the trendy nature of the Market it is located in. Starting with the menu, everything sounded delicious, I was having a hard time deciding. I settled on a standard pork sandwich (which seemed to be their claim to fame) with a side salad and soda. I was sadly very let down...Portion size was mediocre for a nearly 20 dollar lunch, and the bun was awful. The last third was inedibly tough. The porchetta itself was decent though I will admit.

Overall, I'm very let down with roast. In a town like Victoria, $20 can get you something much nicer!!

Food is always a 10 but recently bought the picnic box for $25. Not a lot of food for the price and the choice of dessert was a cookie or gummy bears ? Not exactly a dessert.

Sandwiches here are poor. Today, I visited the Victoria Public Market with a friend and I was really craving a sandwich. Roast caught my eye because they have a huge piece of juicy meat sitting out front which makes you think it will be delicious. I ordered the chicken sandwich and was immediately disappointed with the size as the guy was preparing it. The sandwich they give you is not worth $10; I'd price it at $6. Not only is the portion size very small, it lacks in diverse flavour. The chicken tastes bland, and the "salsa verde" is actually pesto sauce which they drown the sandwich in. The chicken and sauce make the bread soggy, while ok, the way to get around this is to toast the bread to make it crunchy and/or add another ingredient to add extra crunch to the sandwich (which they add coleslaw to). Well the guy who made my sandwich barely sprinkled any coleslaw on it and definitely did not toast the bread. When I got back to my desk I was forced to consume a small, soggy, sandwich that only tasted like pesto which is not what I imagined when ordering the sandwich and paying $10 for. There are tons of great sandwich places nearby. I will not be going here again.

Hey dude.... The meatballs are quite tasty.

If you feel comfortable being addressed as....hey dude,,,, and if you have the dough to pay $ 3.33 for a hot saucy meatball, indulge yourself.

Best thing I've put in my mouth.... The porchetta kale caesar salad is easily in the top 5 things I have ever put in my mouth. Ever. The porchetta is truly wonderful. You get moist pork with pork cracklins and fatty bits mingling in your mouth like a pork chop had a steamy affair with a perfectly proportioned pork rind... The acid of the lemon and dressimg accompanied by the broccoli rabe and pesto finish it off with a well situated money shot. At this point I want Roast to take their food cart to Meat&Bread's doorstep and show their patrons what porchetta shoild taste like.

Dry bread, small portions and overpriced.. Great idea executed very poorly. A small serving of the daily roast between two pieces of dry bread for 10$.
Not returning.
Ira
Good meat, bad prices & dry bread. My porchetta sandwich was served on a day old dry bun. While the pork was delicious, the serving size felt small for the price ($10).

Typical Victoria Service. So today there was a line with 7 people in it, and 4 workers, only 1 of whom was serving customers. People were turning around and walking away. The owner/manager comes out and talks to a worker then goes away. You'd think he'd even pitch in if there's a rush, but no, this is Victoria. Service is only something you claim in ads.

The prices are grossly inflated for what you get. When this place tanks like all the rest, the owner will be blaming everything else but his own, easily-fixed actions for why it went so wrong.
CL
Good but not great. I agree with other reviews that day the price is too high for what you get. I was excited to try the porchetta but think all the hype is due to the moist meat and crispy crackling. I think that is a new experience for a lot of people, but if you have had a lifetime of Chinese crackling pork, it's not spectacular. Still the sandwich was good, but left me thinking of the cost when I was still a bit hungry.

Roast used to be good; generous portions and consistent. Today was my last visit; sandwich sizes have shrunk in past months and while they still taste great, they are no longer worth the price. Roast get your consistency back and I'll give you another chance.

Good! Though slightly overpriced. Really enjoyed my sandwich here, but feel like the price was just a bit too high to keep me coming back regularly.

The food is always excellent - thanks for your hard work and commitment:))

Generally really good!. Have been here a couple times and really liked it! I get a kale bowl with delicious meats on it, and have usually really liked the meat, but last time I went there was very little ceasar dressing on the kale salad, and it was kinda meh. My partner usually gets a sandwich, which are hit and miss on whether they're awesome or just okay.

The meatball sandwich was good. Not quite as good as one I had in Toronto recently but good. Other review was right about the service - what is that guy's problem? Lose the attitude.
Carina
Stumbled on this place by accident. Saw the porchetta and had to take some home to try. I have to say it was amazing! Closest I've had to the real thing since being in Italy!

What Porchetta Dreams are made of!. Forayed into the Hudson Market a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday morning for the first time, and stumbled upon Roast Carvery. Disappointingly for me, I had a lunch date elsewhere that day. After meeting one of the owners, George, and seeing his selection of delicious carvings, I knew I had to stop in again....so I went the very next day (Super Bowl Sunday) and ordered up two porchetta sandwiches, a kale salad with porchetta and a full roast chicken. Needless to say, it was AMAZING! Took it back home for a small Super Bowl party we were hosting and we were all blown away. Great food and a fantastic addition to the Victoria foodie scene. Can't wait to go back again!

Yum!. I made a foray to the market last week in search of Sutra, which was quite tasty, but after eating milled about and noticed Roast. More specifically, I noticed a gorgeous pork roast with golden crackling sitting there on a board, and slices being carved off into buns. So today I returned, husband in tow. The service was excellent; the fellow carving the meat offered us samples of chiccaron while we waited, and our order was prepared quickly. I debated long and hard between the various animals, and finally settled on roasted chicken, which was superb--moist, tender chunks of roasted bird on an exquisitely tender roll, with a tasty slaw and some salsa verde. Husband was having a terrible day, and only a meatball sandwich would do. I could see him wince as they squirted salsa verde on it, but he was happily surprised that it worked very well with the tomato sauce and the pork and beef meatballs. I rue not purchasing their house made chorizo, but will pick some up on the next run. All in all a great lunch, and one that will be repeated.

Meato!. Have to try anything other than the Beef sandwich... but one day I hope to branch out. Its gonna be awhile though... Last time I almost got back in line for a second sandwich... and now that I think about it, I should have.

Hit reset on your tastebuds cuz this place will school any other lunch spot in Victoria. Period.

I can't stop thinking about the porchetta on kale bowl I ordered last week! It was so, so good! Everything I need for a perfect lunch: lots of greens, cheese, juicy pork, heavenly bits of crackling, and a light and flavourful sauce. Mmmmmm!!!

Little seating. I had a beef sandwich. It was OK. There wasn't any available seating so I had to eat it wandering around the market (which wasn't my first choice of ways to eat lunch). I'll definitely be going back to the Market check out Sutra and some other places though. I had a great brioche at the nearby French bakery and picked up a pretty cheap packet of herbs de provence at the spice shop.

I've been to Roast about 5 times now and I really enjoy it, although it feels like they're missing something to really put them over the top. The porchetta and beef are both solid as are the condiments, although one time my wife ordered the beef and ended up with 90% fat and was unimpressed. Also as a previous reviewer mentioned, the guy who does the carving most of the time seems to consistently be in a bad mood. If you ask anything of him expect a snappy, disgruntled response. I guess he just wants to carve and be left alone! Would definitely benefit from a friendlier face there especially considering it's the customers first point of contact with Roast. The other staff seem really nice though and they also have some really good sides in the fridge along with a solid drink selection including Phillips soda's on tap and Guayaki Yerba Mate. All in all I will be back but I feel like they are a few tweaks away from being truly great.

No frills . No gimmicks. Just a sandwich and a damn good one. Very tasty and very light and fresh. Wish there were more places like this where they carve the meat right in front of u.

Went there for the first time... not only was the food bland and the bread super dry. The guy behind the counter cutting the meat was so rude to everyone. No.smiles no.hellos nothing . Just mumbling and frowning. If I wasnt with someone.else I would have just left. . The cashier was super friendly and nice

Ordered a pork sandwhich and roasted veggies. The veggies had a good flavour but were old. The sandwich had a nice fresh bun. The pork was tender well seasoned liked the broccoli & provolone cheese but no wow factor. I would rate it 3.5 stars out of 5. Probibly won't be back no biggie

A simple concept executed very well. The roast meats are all delicious, but don't miss out on the meatballs! I've been enjoying the meatball bowl (comes with kale Caesar salad). It's very filling without feeling heavy.

Sandwiches!!. I stumbled into the market yesterday and came across Roast. It is a feast for the eyes with the roasters right behind the counter. They had a good selection of roast meats, vegetables and sides with a variety of cold drinks on hand. It smelled delicious in there! I had a roast beef sandwich with onion and chimichurri. The cook on the slices of beef I had was a bit too rare for my taste, but it was so tender! The chimichurri had a great flavour to it. I will have to come back to try the other sandwiches on the menu. Great place!
Chutneypie
Hallelujah!. I had juicy, tender, perfectly medium rare roast beef in a beautiful soft bun with chimichurri sauce and some basalmic onion jam. It was so good, perfectly seasoned with a little coarse salt and some pepper. I am going back soon to try the chicken, porchetta and meatball sandwiches.

Best food ever!!! Try the pork sandwich!! Don't miss this place
Horsing Around Victoria
If you are an omnivore, you won’t be able to stroll past Roast Carvery in the new Market at the Hudson easily. Heavenly aromas of lemon rosemary roast chicken, house spiced rib of beef, and, Roast’s crème de la crème/piece de resistance, the majestic herb roast porchetta will make you salivate like a rabid dog. All the rotisserie items are available for sale by the half-pound or pound. We can say without exaggeration that this is one of the best sandwiches in all Victoria. Click to Enlarge If you are having lunch, you must try one of their heavenly sandwiches. Specifically we recommend the porchetta. This supreme sammy pairs slices of impossibly juicy pork, crispy crackling, provolone cheese and crunchy broccoli rabe on a soft Portuguese bun. We can say without exaggeration that this is one of the best sandwiches (if not THE best) in all Victoria. All the meat at Roast is naturally raised. Roast also has unique pantry items for sale should you choose to take some r

My first stop at the newly opened Vic Public Market: Roast Carvery. It's not hard to see what their "wares" are - right at the front of the stall, the owner is slicing off roasts of pork, beef and chicken. The two sandwiches we order are fab. Roast beef (done to a juicy medium) slices are layered onto a soft but sturdy Portuguese bun and dressed with chimichurri sauce, a few rings of pickled onions and a quick sprinkle of coarse salt. The Porchetta follows suit - moist slices of pork and some bits of crackling are roughly chopped on the butcher board before being placed onto the bun - then topped with the chimichurri sauce, a branch of broccoli rapini and slices of provolone cheese. Oh my.

I’ve always walked by Roast with all those lovely pork rinds prancing in the corner of my eyes. I can pick up a Chicharrón (a dish with nothing but these rinds) or get a sandwich with this garnish, but I always pass it by. Yes, I have a weakness for those crunchy delicious delights. When I should watch my weight, resistance was lost to me this day. I finally gave in and ordered their Porchetta sandwich ($9.95). Yes, it’s pricey for a 5’ sandwich but oh the flavour!

Victoria Roast Meat and Sandwich Shop at the Victoria Public Market at The Hudson serves up delicious sandwiches that rivals Meat and Bread. They are commitment to providing delicious, natural, and humane meat you can feel good about buying and eating. While I was in Victoria for a work trip, I had to stop here to get a porchetta sandwich. There’s something about watching a man carve meat that compels you to stop what you’re doing and consume immediately. This is quite true and so many people at the market just stopped, smelled the meat, and then lined up to get a piece of it. It smells really good with the aroma of roasted chicken, beef and pork in the air. They sell a variety of sandwiches and even whole roasts.
