Review Dog Gone It - Victoria

Great hot dogs! The different types are named after different dog races which is kind of funny. All that we ate was really tasty and much better than most hot dogs you usually get on the street. There is enough space to sit inside or outside. Free Wifi is also available.

This is located on a popular tourist intersection in Victoria. They serve hot dogs with toppings. And shakes. The hot dogs were ... hot and were served very quickly (less then a 3 minute wait) . We were there at a really busy time too. The topping combos worked really well together and the dogs are 1/4lb, so they are big. No need to order two. We ordered a Labrador Retriever with no hot sauce and a Chihuahua. The cheese on both was perfectly melted. Forks and knives are offered for the messy dogs (like the Chihuahua) and people unaccustomed to eating them, (like the two very sweet, older British women sitting next to us). The menu is simple. They are hot dogs. With or without toppings. Yellow mustard, ketchup and sweet relish you handle on your own when you get napkins and free cups of water. They also serve two other types of dog. I think a German hotdog and a vegetarian one. Seriously though, if you order a vegetarian hot dog, you should just go somewhere else to eat. Like next door, where they serve salads.

What a unique place. Really papular & giving a great spirit of Victoria B C. We have been fascinated by the menu options & unique names of the yummy hot dogs. It didn't look like a fast food restaurant. Food was amazing when it came out, staff was friendly and easy to communicate.

Tasty hot dogs! Quite filling and a funky retro atmosphere.

Upgrade to five stars! Hotdogs are amazballs~ Edit: the sundae shop appears to be a Hot Dog shop now...I'll update this if I ever eat there. Three stars until further notice. Service was good and the sundae was awesome! Best to split it between two people as it's a little much to finish on your own.

A small restaurant situated in close proximity of the harbor. Hence the name the food sold here consists mostly of hotdogs. They taste good and the service is very fast. Staff is friendly and helpful. Washrooms are present for customers and are clean. A good choice for a small bite.

The Soda Shoppe has hot dogs, milkshakes, cakes, pies and stuff including gourmet vegetarians styled hot dogs too. The Little Chihuahua was pretty good with potato chips and Boylan's Soda Pop. A fast food lunch overlooking the heart of Victoria, BC - Canada... Nice!

Good hot dogs, fast service, excellent location in downtown Victoria.

My husband had the German Shepard, I had the Labrador and my son had just a plain hotdog. We all enjoyed our hotdogs. The bun was not your typical bun. It was soft and fresh without seeds. Sodas are served in glass. Bottles. They will whip up a smoothie or shake for you if you want. Within the same small building is a small icecream shop. The raspberry/chocolate ice cream was really good in a waffle cone. This restaurant is within easy walking distance to the minature museum, the bug museum, the Empress Hotel and the Ferry Terminal to Port Angeles, WA. There is a currency exchange company just next door for those who want to get foreign currency. The hotdog/icecream shop can take credit cards if you don't have Canadian money.

I had a milkshake and my companion had a float. Traditional icecream fountain fair with a modern flare. The dogs looked good and creative.

As the sign outside says, thus place does indeed serve you a "wickd good hot dog". Ice cream float was also great.

Great location and interesting hot dogs. Didn't try the milkshakes, but they look good. The Huskey dog was great.

Fine dogs for quick lunch. Good selection and customizable. Would recommend if you want a quick bite at decent price.

The hot dogs here taste great, but are definitely overpriced.
It's a nice place to stop at and eat but I wouldn't come back here.
Their milkshakes taste good though👍🏻

This is a kind of crappy hot dog place that overcharges for hot dogs, intentionally targeting tourists. I hope people are aware that this is not a place reflective of the cuisine of Victoria. The dogs are sloppy, not in the so-sloppy-it's-devilishly-amazing way, but in the this-was-thrown-together / I-regret-this way. I cannot in good faith suggest this place to anyone I know, and I would say that you should only go to this place if you happen to be within a block of it and are intensely craving a hot dog for some reason. For the record, I don't hate hot dogs, or even hot dog places. I hold Tubby Dog in Calgary in very high regard but this is the polar opposite.

Considering you can get a large hot dog at Costco for $2, I'm not impressed with this $7 dog. This place is for the tourists.

The decor is appealing, but by no means comfy or encouraging patrons to linger. The restaurant is in an old beautiful building on the corner of an area thick with tourists. The pinball machines may distract you from the dirty tables and empty condiment dispensers.

They serve milkshakes and large hot dogs with various toppings. I'm sure none of the toppings are made in-house. Come to think of it, I'd be surprised if anything is made in-house. The dog its self is on par with any good dog. The bun is just a bun. Un-steamed. Untoasted.

It's more of a novelty to visit once and now that I've gone, I don't need to go back.

We Just drove in for a dog before our movie. Website said they close at 7. Got there at 4:57pm Turns out they close at 5! New hours. Boo. Starving.

Ice creams are really good. List of flavours available. Did not try the food yet. Must try: Cheesecake rasberry ice cream. Even if you take a small scoop, they give u pretty large one😜

For a junk food meal, it's okay. We asked to upgrade our float to one using Boylan's soda, which they carry, and the staff struggled with the change. We also ordered our hot dog without buns and those had to be remade. It appears they normally have tap water in reusable glasses which were not available, nor was there any water available. For at least three staff, it wasn't very well managed and the staff could be better trained.
The sauces and flavours were good. I personally think more people would order the floats if it was always upgraded to the Boylan's, instead of cheap crappy pop.

Hot dogs and ice cream are good, but nothing amazing. Everything is overpriced too. The staff has always been friendly each time I've been there.

Well made dogs, and great steamed buns. As a quick stop for a bite of lunch, there's some good value to be found here, and some fun, creative flavours for every palate. Veggie dogs available for those who are so inclined.

Okay, great creativity on the hotdog names. Just found the quality on par with any other dog I get. Lots of options for topping and sauce which was cool though.

Great Pit Stop and cool way to have a dog dressed up. Got a Root Beer float for additional laughs. There's a coffee and dessert bar here, as well.

More like Dog Gone. It's been over a year since my wife and I have had a hot dog. On a beautiful Sunday afternoon the Dog Gone It sign beckoned us with it's slogan "Wicked Good Hot Dogs".

After deciding that we wanted 2 European weiners with bacon and cheese, we placed our order. there was no line up, nor was there any orders ahead of ours. As we anxiously awaited our wicked good hot dog, we noticed that the mustard in the condiment selection was so old that literally half of the bottle had separated and the liquid at the bottom was a murky brownish colour. They clearly don't change or check the fresnfreshness of the condiments. Then, after 5 or so minutes, we are told that all of the European weiners were overcooked and dried out. They said we could either have a smokey or wait another 10 minutes or they could just "nuke" some for us. Did he really say that?

So, the core of their business is hot dogs, but they can't seem to stay on top of the quality control. It's not like they have a large variety of food to deal with. It's not like they were just being slammed with too many customers. It was a Monty Python sketch waiting to happen.

I can see why the place was so dead. Too bad, we were really looking forward to our hot dogs, dog gone it.

Not gourmet but good enough!. Just tried this place today.. It is now what used to be The Soda Shoppe, on a very sunny corner overlooking the harbour. I had the classic dog and an "orange cow" float (orange soda and vanilla ice cream), while my partner had a hot dog with chili and cheese - all for around $4-6 each.

To put things in perspective, I never expect a hot dog to be amazing. They're comforting junk food! But the bun was notably dry, and the hot dog was a little over cooked. My partner enjoyed the chili and cheese, and we both thought the float was good.

There is a good variety of condiments to add to your hot dog (sweet and sour sauce, sriracha, the classic saurkraut etc) and the decor was very retro. The staff wasn't unkind, nor were they overly friendly, though that is the case with a lot of places.

So... Did I really expect a gourmet hot dog? No. But I hope they'll get fresher buns!

A Little Better Than Not Bad. Went here for a quick lunch while doing the tourist thing downtown. Excellent range of options, at prices that would probably seem normal to locals. (Even allowing for the slight difference in currency exchange rates, they seemed much higher than prices for similar foods back home -- but that appears to be the rule everywhere between the mountains and the water. So let's call the value acceptable.) The folks behind the counter were cheerful, prompt and polite. The production crew lagged behind the cashiers, resulting in not-unacceptable delays in getting orders out.

The food itself was mostly OK. The buns used were surprisingly ordinary, about the same as the cheapest ones that I'd get at the grocery store back home, and while they weren't stale, you could see that they had discussed the idea among themselves. Wieners were fine, toppings at least that, and most of them were generously laid on. The place was pretty crowded, but not uncomfortably so. If the weather had been nicer the outside tables would have been in high demand.

The Curmudgeon's Ratings:
FOOD: 3 chili peppers (out of 5)
SERVICE: 3 1/2 chili peppers
AMBIENCE: 3 chili peppers
VALUE: 2 1/2 chili peppers
