Review Northern Quarter - Victoria

Tyson Doknjas
One of the most underrated establishments in Victoria. Captures the unique feel and flavour of the city with a well balanced food and drink menu, and some incredible local talent showcased almost everyday! Very attentive and warm service, at the bar and on the floor. Saturday and Sunday brunch at this venue is one of Victoria’s best kept secrets. Check this place out for yourselves!

Came to Northern Quarter for a late dinner. It was busy and our group of 5 was seated within 15 minutes. The live music was fun, it had an old timey style that made you want to tap your foot to the beat. I had the beef shin and I was blown away. It must have marinated for 24+ hours because it was so tender it just melted in my mouth. Our waiter was very attentive and always on top of things. I would definitely go again.

Great food, good service, diverse menu while still not too large. Had hoped there would be more gluten free options.

I don’t usually give 5 ⭐️s but this place deserves it! The atmosphere, food, service, live music, clean washrooms, choices of drinks and food menu, pretty damn good in my opinion. I absolutely would go back and recommend!!

Nice little place. Good drinks (a bit pricey but very tasty). Went here on a whim and enjoyed the live music

Amazing place. I went twice during my stay in Victoria, one for a night out and one for the brunch. The food for dinner and brunch are delicious and creative, nice selection of local craft beer, great service and ambiance.

This place is good spot for some quality eats. Had the burger with house made pickles and it was really good! Couple things could have been better but I enjoyed it. They seem to have some good beers on too and cocktails as well! The music that was on was also nice!

Really tasty food, unique apps and snack plates (haven't tried an entree), fast service even when busy, which is most of the time. Nice atmosphere with about 15 round tables to seat 4-6 each. Often reservations needed to book a table. Excellent entertainment - a regular trivia night on Wednesdays and top notch music acts on weekends. There is enough room for dancing between the tackles and the elevates stage - overall an excellent little venue for good food, entertainment and drinks (especially the cocktails). One of their regular bands "mixed tape" gets the whole place grooving. It's dinner, drinks and dancing all in one great little venue.

Great little live music pub variety of liquor choices and a good looking food menu. Bonus they carry Phillip's sodas for non drinkers. Decent service and friendly atmosphere. Customers seem to be in the 30-50s range which I fit into and appreciated the chill vibe.

Their Saturday brunch is super chill and super good. Very interesting, different, and unique options for breakfast foods. The breakfast salad (which doesn't sound that appetizing as a concept) is downright delicious. Cool vibes and good service.

We were blown away by our brunch today, and in a city replete with great brunch options, I can't imagine waiting in line anywhere when this gem is ready to seat you. Easily a top 5 brunch in the city. The vibe in the room is eclectic and interesting, the music was on point, and the service was exceptional. Oh, and the food was off the charts good. We had the eggs and spätzle and avocado toast--both were excellent. We can't wait to go back for dinner.

NQ where the bathrooms have no gender! Music was sultry smooth jazz last night. Food is unusual, and locally sourced! Emma is one of the best at her job. She doted on my party of 12 last night like a mother. I love this place.

Probably one of the best breakfast sandwiches I have ever had!! I believe they are only open on the weekends for breakfast, but I highly recommend trying it out. The breakfast sandwich was amazing and included tuna, avocado and other yummy things, but make sure you get it on the biscuit! The biscuit is everything, I made all my friends get it, and they loved it. Great place, great staff, definitely one of my favourite breakfast spots in Victoria

Cool place. We found by accident on a Wednesday night. They have the Quiz night which was pretty fun. The host would alternate the questions with great songs mostly 80's 90's. Raspberry weat beer was great.

Great venue for live music, ever changing dishes, and an excellent drinks selection. Service here is with it. It seems like many people think it's expensive, but think the price is representative of the quality, and to be expected for downtown (if it weren't, why would they be full virtually every night I've walked by?). So, I wouldn't be surprised by a $100 dinner and drinks per couple; for people who haven't been, be prepared for something around that. I usually end up paying around $70 for 2 of us. And why shouldn't you pay for entertainment with your meal? Musicians and entertainers can't work for free (but to clarify, live music has been by suggested donation every time I've been).

Chef Torin Egan has put together an eclectic menu that never fails to tickle the taste buds ( yeah, I know a cliché) The salads, grilled squid and miso donuts are particularly good. I was told the veggie burger was the best in town, and I would have a hard time arguing the point. The staff are efficient and friendly and the cellared beer list is a gift from the beer gods, although the prices are slightly high, knowing what some of these beers retail for in liquor stores. The venue on Saturday was very busy and for the most part the staff coped with the rush without any undue waits. The fact this restaurant has musical entertainment is a huge bonus, with good acoustics, great sight lines and a wide range of musical styles represented over the course of a month. Will we be back? Of course we will.

This is definitely a restaurant you should put on your ' have to go there' list. The atmosphere is super chill and comfortable, service is top notch, food is very well flavoured and made, cocktails and wine choices are some of the best downtown and as an added bonus they have really good entertainment. We had the most wonderful time at NQ last Saturday and will visit again really soon😄

I had a lovely time at Northern Quarter and their food was excellent! I had the burger off their bunch menu and it was really tasty, including the salad and fresh cut fries. They had some of the best fries I've had and their home made ketchup was amazing.

Heard raves about their brunch so tried to go here for my birthday this morning after checking that they were open for the weekend. Got there at 10:30 and the place was shut, no sign on the door, other than the calendar which says that they’re open at 10. Too bad.

Great food friendly staff. The best brunch in Victoria hands down

Great food and great ambiance! It’s a good place to see live music and drink with your friends.

Another Fantastic night at the Northern Quarter and the brilliant music of Mike Demers and Confreres! What a happening place the NQ has become. Congratulations Benjamin.

We had an amazing meal last night! Fabulous atmosphere and quite possibly the best Veggie Burger I have ever eaten! My boyfriend was so jealous he ordered the Veggie Burger to go with the intention to eat it the next day but he finished it off on our walk back to our car!!! One of the best nights I have had in a long time!!! Thanks for putting on a great live band and producing some fantastic food!!!

Great venue for all sorts of entertainment here in Victoria. Thanks for supporting the local music/comedy/entertainment scene.

Absolutely love this place. Great music! Awesome donut dessert!

I love this place! The food, the drinks, the tunes - all good stuff. If you've never had a night where you've come home from a solid day at work, had a bit of a nap, cleaned yourself up a bit, rode/walked/bussed downtown, and then sat down to a pint, the barley arancini, and the grilled cabbage, then you are missing out! Don't miss out! Put in a good day at work and then go! You're such a go-getter. You deserve a treat.

The food last night was amazing! Definitely recommend the Freekeh Fritters and the Veggie Burger. Going back for brunch tomorrow... Can't wait!

Great place for live music and a light meal!

Love the food, the drinks, the service, the music. Oh, and the space and the vibe. Did I mention the art, the cocktails? The chickpeas. All stellar. Every time.

I was at the Northern Quarter on 16 Jul 2015 to listen to the Hawai`ian music. The acoustics were very poor, I couldn't hear the band very well, the waitress/waitor talking to me, nor could I hear the lady next to me who wanted to talk to me. Everything clashed into one another - noise, talking, etc. I sat in the bench section and I found the tables where a bit too close together. I left after having my meal. The band didn't seem the best from what I could hear over the din of the customers. The waitress and waitors were pleasant but it did take awhile to get a menu and to order my drink. The menu was very different from most North American restaurants. Check out the photo section of this FB site for an example of the menu. I wanted the charred cabbage but they were out of cabbage so I had bread, cheese, and blueberry compote instead. I believe the price was $12 for the bread board. Even though they came with the selection, I asked for no nuts. The bread loaf was cut into about 6 or 7 slices, with a large tortilla chip inserted in between each slice, a small dish of blueberry compote and three small pieces of different types of cheese. I also ordered two Brown Cow's to drink and each one cost $10.01. I'm guessing that the glass was about 4 or 5 ozs, perhaps as much as 6 ozs but not any larger. I also went to the restaurants website and it looks like it's not up and running yet. Considering that Victoria's restaurants are at a slow down and chefs are not readily available, it will be interesting to see if this one will last the downturn.

Northern Quarter brunch was so delicious the other day. I celebrated my birthday there with good friends. The avocado with eggs was scrumptious and the bacon was cooked to perfection! Love this place.

We had the pleasure of having our staff party here. Very interesting flavours and all well prepared. We will be back as so will more than a few of the people there. Thank you so much for a great meal!
