Review Sunnyside Cafe - Victoria

Ritika Taneja
Loved the food. You can go order inside, and they will serve it on your table. Super easy and the food is really amazing. Their coffees are commendable too!
Marcela Mejia
Absolutely delicious!! I highly recommend the Mediterranean eggs, also the chicken bacon ranch sandwich, omg!! and the waffles are amazing too. We'll come back for sure!

Brisk and accurate service. Western diner fare with a few lighter options. Off menu requests handled without issue.

Visiting from WA state, ate breakfast here on our last day. Simply amazing! 👏 hands down the best huevos rancheros I've ever had. The flavor and size portion 👌. Coffee was a bit too strong, hubby had the eggs, chorizo and potatoes. The chorizo is homemade and was also very good. Thank you for great food and friendly service!
Aidan Mackwood
Awesome little brunch spot! Walk up style service with seat yourself eating area was refreshing. Food was amazing, the House Benny is 🤌 highly recommended! Great coffee as well. New go-to brunch spot for us!

Haven't been in so long and will never go that long again. The food is excellent, service is excellent. Overall best breakfast place in vic imo!
Joshua Buck
Good people, good food. When it's cold or raining or both, their limited seating has been packed last two times there so couldn't stay. Be nice if they would have heat lamps outside. Nowhere to eat, sadly. Do recommend the food though.
Patricia Garland
We love this place! Good food, great people and the prices are very reasonable. They make amazing soups from scratch, and their all day breakfasts are excellent!

I made a special trip to support this amazing business!! The owner is so sweet and the food is amazing. Keep up the great work!! I will be back as often as I can!!!

Never had a bad meal here yet. The staff are kinda friendly, most of the time, when they're in good mood, and you're behaving... But if you're bad, they'll be firm, yet fair. Kinda sounds like my parents! Di6g friendly outside. Great for watching people go by. Street parking.

Came on a Sunday morning and managed to get an outdoor table without waiting. You have to go in to order and they bring the food to you. The staff are friendly and efficient. The food is fresh and delicious (breakfast sandwich and cheesy hollandaise hash) for average pricing.
Lynn Ross
Wonderful 1st visit. Had the Chilli chicken wrap, delicious. Also had the Strawberry smoothie which was yummy and perfect for a hot day. Hubby enjoyed the benny benny. So much food, had to take home 1/2 my wrap...the smoothie was so filling but so good. Met the owners and they are wonderful. Will definitely visit again and share this with friends. Thank you for a fabulous "Friday date day".
Adam Wadden
Their breakfast sandwich is top notch. Legit the best I’ve ever had. Eggs Benny is amazing as well. So good

Food was good tasting, maybe a tad expensive for the taste, but maybe it was just my taste on one meal. People were nice and it had a nice vibe.
Mark Nicholls
Great little breakfast joint, glad to have found it, everyone with me enjoyed their meals, will definitely be eating here again next time I'm in Esquimalt!

I don't go out for breakfast very often but when i do Sunnyside is my first choice! Delicious, fast and a beautiful little gem. The last couple of years i have gone there for my bday breakfast and will keep the tradition for years to come. This place never disappoints me but tantalizes my taste buds and usually leaves me in a food haze for awhile after!
Kathy Deane
Great place for breakfast. The hollandaise sauce was delicious, probably the best ever...the breakfast hash was really good, and the chorizo patties are outstanding! We've been many times, nice to see they are doing well. Not a chain restaurant feel, nice small and local, great friendly service.
Samantha Lefebvre
So so so good!! Definitely recommend to anybody wanting a good breakfast or lunch place!!
Brandon Roussin
The best breakfast I've had for a long time and the best coffee I think I've ever had.Well worth the trip from downtown. Will definitely be back !
Drielle Tousignant
I love this place. The admirals benny is my favorite. But the potatoes need a change. They taste odd...but I can never quite pin point what it is.
Kim Askin
Awesome food and Amazing service. Cute Little shop. Love supporting small businesses. One small business to another. :)
Christine Storey
Great food and service!!! The staff was friendly - my soup was delicious!
Shane Yamamoto
Both the service and food food are excellent. Great coffee doesn't hurt either! One of the best breakfast values on the island. If you haven't checked out this little gem yet I highly recommend it!
Jessica Marshall
Sunnyside is my favorite restaurant in Victoria. Excellent food, great staff, and a welcoming friendly atmosphere. I love this place!
Marian Fortner
Fresh, tasty, good value, friendly service! Perfect lunch/brunch spot!
Nicole Allen
Great little spot and love the hollandaise, would love to see a bit more consistency can be a hit and miss at times but overall good food!
Susan Dunlop
The grandsons thought the waffles the best. We had to order another order
Kay Tee
Great service and great food. The name is no joke, ate outside on the deck in the sun on Tuesday despite the snow. Was pretty much perfect.
Susan Dunlop
Perfect little place to visit when we are in Esquimalt!! Great food and great service. Charming patio in sunny Esquimalt or if happens to rain inside. Look this place up on your next visit.
Nicole Perry
great food ! love that its close to home !! yes sometimes i get some undercooked potatoes but it happens when the place is full and they are trying to fill all orders . that doesnt stop me from going and having good breakfast date with my husband !!
Bengt Penn
What a gem! A pearl within a tiny oyster. How they do it, I don't know, bordering, as it is, not quite a regular ,commercial kitchen. But the product. Fabulous! Put it on a truck, and park it outside my house!

This was my favorite breakfast spot in Victoria for 7 years. The staff is lovely but the food is SO DISSAPOINTING now. I kept going back hoping the new owners/ kitchen staff would improve but it is terrible. You will pay + tip upfront for your meal and leave disappointed because everything is undercooked and cold. The hashbrowns used to be the best in town but now you just get raw potato. In the last year, every item I have ordered has been cold, undercooked, missing ingredients etc. I am not coming back or giving them any more money for terrible meals. I've noticed lots of other customers sending back plates or complaining while I'm there so I hope Sunnyside starts to care and make some changes in the right direction. Very disappointing.
Lex
Amazing food!! There'd be a lineup out the door if this place was downtown. One of Esquimalt's best kept secrets. Also the staff there are very friendly.

Hashbrowns were literally disgusting. Breakfast is my fav meal of the day. Hashbrowns one of my fav things to eat. Tasted like they took a raw potato and cooked it for 4 minutes and then threw some red powder on it. When the lady asked me how everything was I told her the hashbrowns were disgusting, she offered me some more red powder. The lady at the table beside me probably put a tablespoon of salt on hers before she just gave up eating them. If someone tells you something is disgusting, you offer to get them something else. Never again am I going there.
Heather
Great food, amazing staff, and the best coffee in Esquimalt! I've stopped in a hurry for toast and coffee a few times and they're always fast and friendly. A definite favourite :)

LOVE SUNNYSIDE !!. I go there often , They know my name and they remember what i like to order . I can be quite picky and they are more than helpful . They are all very friendly and personable there . The food is lovely. I usually order the garden salad or the BLT and even those are simply delightful . Im very grateful for Sunnyside as i dont eat fast food or Tim Hortons and prefer to eat on the healthy side . Sunnyside has alot to offer , Friendly staff , Wonderful Healthy food and its a great place in the summer to sit out on the patio and People watch .

Thank you Sunnyside for the great meals and the welcoming staff :)
Melissa Howorth
Went in for breakfast today and was very disappointed. The eggs were way over cooked and rubbery the sausage was dried out and the service was non exsistant. Not once during the time i was there did the waitress come to me and ask "how is everything so far" thats something that should be automatic without the cust having to say anything had she done that at the begining of the meal it could have been salvaged. Everything used to be so consistsnly good at sunnyside that i even tipped before the meal this time as i was paying on debit this is something i now regret as this time it was NOT deserved. Willing to give one more try but thats it, not happy at all

Very tasty huevos rancheros!. I went here to Sunnyside Cafe for my third visit to this restaurant in the last several months. Once again, it was a great breakfast (huevos rancheros). The young lady behind the counter was very friendly and got my coffee & breakfast ready very quickly. The price was reasonable, and my coffee refill was given without any prompting on my part. I was the first customer in at 8am, but by the time I left at 9am the cafe was mostly full - it is popular!

Great breakfast!. Tiny spot with friendly staff and good food. Worth a visit.

YUM!. Great food and family friendly! The owner is lovely and super friendly! If you haven't been you must go!

Love It!. Sunnyside Cafe is my all time favourite restaurant. The last reviewer must have hit it on a very off day because I have never experienced that kind of behaviour from anyone who works there. I know the cook starts before 7 because I see them in there on my morning walk so I wouldn't worry about the grill.

We need to support local business. Everyone has a bad day. Give this Cafe a shot -and a second chance.

Best Bennies in town!!
Spunky-o
Yikes. This morning we drove up and noticed it wasn't open until 8 am so as it was 754am we waited in our car to give them a chance to open. At about 757am we noticed a patron walked in and took a chair at the far table. We entered at 759 am and as the sign was still off I asked if it was okay if we came in. The girl gave me a scowl and looked to the bloke. He said Yes and he was starting coffee and that it would be a bit. We sat down and the two continued to chat about personal stuff, ignoring us and the other patron reading the paper. We decided that as we work at 9 it didn't look like this was the place to get service. As we walked by the counter when we exited, we noticed the girl cleaning the grill ( had to be from last nite as they just opened....YIKES. That's a bit of a concern. The bloke said you alright, I said change of plans. What a shame....love to support local places particularly in Esquilmalt, but this was absolutely horrible. Went to Willies and was in and out coffee breakfast and a healthy tip for the great food and service and at the office by 853am. Thank heavens for alternatives. Pick up your sox Sunnyside as competition is everywhere!

Love it!!. This may be one of my favourite breakfast places in town. During the day and off-peak hours it's quiet and a nice place to sit and relax. Casual atmosphere, you order, sit down and they'll bring your food to you. I like how you can just refill water whenever you want by yourself. The food is delicious. I had a typical breakfast, 2 eggs, bacon, potatoes and toast. Everything was excellent and cooked perfectly. Quick service too, plates are taken away and coffee refilled. It's quite small and when it's not busy, staff talk amongst themselves at the front counter. It was kind of weird listening to their life stories while I was sipping my coffee, but whatever not a big deal. Highly recommend.

Edit July 2 2016 : The menu has changed, and it's kind of weird. The traditional breakfast is no longer served with a garnish, I guess because the oranges are considered a side. So the plate sort of looks off. Also, there's a new cook and he served me AN END PIECE OF TOAST!!!!!! I couldn't believe it.

Well run, great service and food...must go if you are in Esquimalt.

LOVE it! Sunnyside, what can I say? I would marry your Benny if I could. I go there often and am never disappointed. Great atmosphere, great staff and. GREAT food.

Great Food, Great Service. The food at Sunnyside Cafe is great. Whether I have a sandwich, benny, or traditional breakfast I'm never disappointed. If I opt in for hash browns, I'm happy that they're not overcooked and that I know that I'm eating potato. I've tried other places in the area, and I can confidently say that this place has the best food, service, and smiles I've yet found!
Janet
Food and service is really good 10/10, but the atmosphere is average and some of the clientele took away from our meal.
Michelle Ray
This has to be one of my favourite breakfast spots in Victoria....
Great food, great price, friendly service.... Love it there! And they actually are in the sunny side of the street.
Mags
Good Benny and like that it comes with grilled tomatoes. Didn't need the hashbrowns, which could have been good if only they'd been cooked through/ they were crunchy / raw.
Erynn Sheardown
Pretty good...I like that they use real potatoes for hashbrowns but wished they were crispier, always kinda mushy.
Lolo Darling
Very nice. The food is simple and good, and the ladies that were working there were really lovely. I was especially impressed with the soup, which was delicious and from-scratch. Will definitely go back.
Food Opinions
Such a great place!. I've been a customer of Sunnyside for a few years now.... is such a fantastic place. Great food, great prices (everywhere downtown is at least another $5 plus parking), great service, great location. Happy to hear the fellow with the pony tail is no longer there - it has a different era now that hes gone. Everyone is so friendly and seems like they really enjoy working there. I'll be back. Good work guys!
AhM-Mnom-mnom.
Good breakfast place. Pretty Good spot!

Why didn't I go here sooner?. I went here for the first time the other day and I will be back.
I had the eggs benedict, everything was great. The Hollandaise sauce was PERFECT-some of the best I have had. My food was ready in a snap.
Can I have my english muffin toasted next time though? That was my only qualm.
I like that the potatoes are extra because I can never eat mine (too much food), so I was happy about that.
The service was great, I was happy and full when I left. Good job guys!

Food & Service slipping !. Home fries extra with Benny, really? This is the biggest complaint by most of your clients. Charge an extra 50c and be done with it. Mark, been a fan since you opened, but of lately the food quality and service has been slipping. Case in point ! Was in your Cafe recently and ordered a benny. Only two other customers in the cafe.Took twenty minutes for my order to arrive. The extra home fries arrived luke warm and tasted like they were day old potatoes. Requested eggs medium, received hard boiled eggs. You have a cook(with pony tail) who engages in very load conversation with the other staff, and they are not paying attention to your customers. Had to get up and get my own coffee refill. Last but not least, there are times when the music is being played so load that I have to rush my meal to get out. Not conducive to a relaxing and friendly atmosphere. Food for thought, :~) Twenty five years in the F&B business.

Excellent eggs Benny. The eggs were cooked to perfection & the Holllandise was fantastic. The service was friendly & prompt. It is a great liitle place & I look forward to returning. PS: Hashbrowns have to be ordered with the meal (ie: not included). I didn't realize this. Potatoes were good too.
Hungryman
Read some reviews, everwhere else jammed, decided to give it a try. Good news no line up and free parking out front. Bad news extra for hash browns, english muffin not toasted for benny, sauce gross and paprika potatos. They cook on hot plates, microwaves and electric fry pans. 30 bucks for two basic breakfasts, worth waiting in line somewhere else. Staff were nice guys

I'm going to have to go against the grain here. Wasn't a fan at all of the eggs Benny. The sauce tasted like it was seasoned with five spice, which under other circumstances is good, but in eggs Benny it's not good. The potatoes weren't that great and the atmosphere was kinda lame. Ah well...
Tom Scharien
Slow service, cold potatoes, over done eggs, and the hollandaise sauce was just plain bad!!!
I won't go back, it probably should have stayed closed.

Finally. I've lived here for 2 yrs. Always told about great breakfast places in town. THIS IS THE ONLY ONE I will eat at.
Bang4Buck
Its exactly perfect except for one thing. The prices are too high. Period. Is it just me or does $15 for breakfast and coffee seem too high. I Had a good breakfast there. It will be a good memory.
Richard Martin
This was my first trip to Sunnyside Cafe. It was recommanded by a fellow coworker so i pretty much had to check it out. The restaurant is quite a small restaurant comparible to the space in Subways. Very friendly Staff. Have to admit the prices are a little pricey especially when you order the eggs benny for around 10 dollars and it doesnt come with anything else but slices of tomatoes. Would been appreciated if someone told me hashbrowns werent included with the Eggs Benny. But besides that i really enjoyed the Cafe. The only downside is its in Esquimalt So if your not a local or work at the military base its a tad out of the way and not really any good parking for those passing though.

Great Breakfast Place. I was in Victoria in early January helping my Son settle into college and found the Sunnyside Cafe on UrbanSpoon. I measure breakfast places according to the way they make their homefried potatoes. Nothing frozen and deep fried here. Keep up the good work!
Michelle
Delicious breakfast in Esquimalt!. There is nothing negative to say about the reopening of SunnySide Cafe! I have thoroughly enjoyed every one of the eggs benedict they have to offer and looking forward to trying the lunch menu as well. Thank you to Steph, Mark, and staff for great service!!
Altoclef
The bennies are the stars of the menu, and they fully deserve to be. Cooked perfectly, with delicious hollandaise and potatoes on the side...nothing beats this for breakfast.
Marilyn
Great food. It is not fair to compare to previous owners; these guys have reopened the Sunnyside Cafe in Esquimalt and I say 'goodonya'...
I had 'real food'...yummy omelet - the fellows gave great service.
It was really busy...
The atmosphere was a bit cool temperature; other than that I thought the food was awesome...
They may have to expand and cover over the outside to accommodate what may be another of Esquimalt's secret jewels; not secret for long..
Well done and good luck!
Mark CB
Can't go wrong. Home-cooked style menu done right. nothing to complain about! I always get one of their eggs benedict.
K
Disappointing. This used to be our favourite breakfast place and we were so happy to see that it reopened but were very disappointed when we went in for breakfast the other day. My partner ordered the Cairn Park Benny which was supposed to come with fresh basil which was nowhere to be seen except for a few teeny little specks in the hollandaise that were barely even visible. With the old owners if the menu said you got fresh basil you got five or six big fresh basil leaves and a beautiful garnish of chives. I ordered the little egger with spinach and feta. It used to come with a big pile of fresh spinach on it and what I got instead were a few wilted leaves that had been scrambled in with my egg.
I guess its new people and they will do it their way, but the food just doesn't have the same love and care it used to that made this place so special.
That said, the staff were wonderful, very friendly and attentive. Just a shame about the food...
Melissa
Sunnyside cafe re-opened today and I would not recommend it to anyone I know. I ordered the original eggs Benny and a hot chocolate. The first disappointment came when the hot chocolate arrived and was barely warm. Then the meal arrived and was less than I had hoped for. There were a couple of soggy messy looking tomato slices that looked like they had been leftover from the last persons plate. The eggs benny was better as the poached eggs were done perfectly but the sauce was too sweet and for $9.00 it should come with a few hashbrowns or some fruit or something to finish the meal. The old owners and staff had a good thing going maybe one day the new staff will match that, until then I won't be back
Gordon
Happy eater. Great food. happy to have it back. Loved the new coffee and eggs benny.
Sarah
Best breakfast ever!. I used to work near sunnyside and I would go there all the time for lunch. The service was fast and every one of those ladies working there were soooo friendly :) now I go there as often as I can and can honestly say its the best breakfast I have ever had. Its not expensive they have a cute seating area but for it beng a popular place the earlier the better to get choice seats.
CaptainZantor
Yum!. Excellent eggs benny... doesn't come with any potatoes but they are available as a side dish for a few bucks. Gives "Swans" a run for the money.. definately recommend giving them a try.
Foodee
Best Bennies in Town. I don't know how these ladies do it! No real kitchen, just a couple hotplates, griddles and microwaves in a crowded little corridor behind the till - and they're putting out the best bennies in Victoria!
The menu isn't large, and neither is the space. Tucked in the unluckliest of locations right underneath Action Motorcycles in Esquimalt, you'll wonder how everybody found this place because it's always busy for brunch. While there isn't much to choose from, every one is a winner. They come piled high with sausage, mushrooms, sauteed onions or whatever struck your fancy. Skillet potatoes are an unnecessary side, but tasty if you find the room. Just plain good food from the most modest of kitchens.

Amazing food!!!

Had the classic eggs benedict; possibly the best I've had in town. If you want quality ingredients and food prepared to near perfection, this is a place for you.
Melanie
Best Breakfast in Forever!. My husband and I were charmed and delighted to superior service ( for a cafe style spot), flavorful and fresh food (sooo good), and very quick service.
We love it and will be back again and again.
Visited 12\14\2011

GREAT!. This is, without a doubt, THE best restaurant in town for breakfast or lunch. Any one of their Eggs Benny choices are delicious. The eggs are always poached to perfection. They also serve a roast beef panini that is a favourite of mine. I like the ambiance, the owners and staff. Everyone is so friendly and service is great. I also like the fact that they are dog friendly with a water dish outside and dog biscuit treats on the counter. Doesn't get any better than this!

Better than Blue Fox in terms of their eggs benny and wait time. I also think Blue Fox is over-hyped (having been there well over several times now), but that's just me. This was our first time at Sunnyside. I had the Mediterranean and my girlfriend had the Saxepoint. Unlike Blue Fox, Sunnyside uses English muffins, so you can actually call them "Eggs Benedict." The eggs were poached perfectly, the muffin was toasted to a golden brown, and the hollandaise was light and didn't drown out everything else. My Mediterranean had a generous amount of spinach and the same could be said about the salmon in the Saxepoint. We also shared an order of waffles. They were waffles. The end. The ordering process was painless too; you stepped in, you ordered at the counter, you took the block letter they gave you, and you sat yourself. I would definitely not recommend going w/ a large group of people here; 4 people for a snug meal (even 4 is somewhat pushing it). You literally are elbow to elbow w/ the person next to you. Even if you try, you can't help but want to jump into the conversation happening next to you. That may sound like a bad thing but that's the feel you get from Sunnyside. You feel like you're just sitting down with some friends to grab a bite; comfortable, ready to share a laugh. The service was quick and efficient. Since you order right away, your food comes to you w/o a long wait. When you're done w/ a plate, someone is ready to scoop it up. You'll want it cleared b/c the tables are small (we had three plates and I welcomed the space). There are also stools and a counter to sit at, but still, space is limited. All in all, reasonable pricing and friendly ambience. I would go back to see what else Sunnyside has to offer; delicious and ideal for breakfast or brunch.

Sunnyside is one of the best places for breakfast in Victoria. Great value. Great service. No 'Blue Fox' lineups. Easygoing friendly staff.
