Review Bon Sushi - Victoria

Selica-Marie Sevigny
We arrived late into Oak Bay region and feeling desperately hungry. As vegan travellers, it can sometimes be a challenge to find somewhere suitable especially an hour before most restoraunts close. The closest sushi place to us at the time was Bon Sushi so we headed there. We saw it was nearly fully booked for a Monday evening and took this as a good sign the food and service was good. It did not disappoint! The staff got us a table right away, the service was friendly and very fast for a busy night. The food was made fresh and very flavoursome! The combination of the background music and the bustling conversations was a nice vibe. Quaint intimate space that can accommodate Aprox 35 people. I normally have lots of photos to add, but we were so hungry and they were closing soon, we consumed everything within minutes. If you look at others reviews, you will see the food looks (and taste) great!

A bustling sushi spot in the heart of Oak Bay, always busy with people coming in and out. The food is good with impressive presentation, and prices are average.

This is a wonderful place! The food looked beautiful and tasted delicious. Service was thoughtful and well-paced. The environment was calm and restful, even though the place was almost completely full. Can't wait to go again! (We recommend the dragon roll.)

10/10 best sushi place. Always the kindest customer service, great prices & reliable food! Really great vegan options as well.

Went there for sushi with my friend. The sushi was actually good, we tried the spicy rolls. The other dish we got was a ramen, pretty good too. The restaurant is cute, but unfortunately the spaces are a little narrow. The waiter was polite and everything, but there was some miscommunication therefore we got there and they gave us a table: once sat, they told us that there were other people waiting before of us, but nobody warned us or anything so we had to get up, go out again and wait to be called inside. Besides that, the food was good! I hope it was just a one time thing :)

Me and my boyfriend went there around 7:35pm and they close at 8pm and yet they still took us in and served us with kindness, we didn’t feel rush while eating. Their customer service is probably the best customer service we’ve ever had in our whole life. Food was also superb!

One of the best restaurants around when it comes to the quality of ingredients. When I go out for sushi, I’m usually hesitant about all-inclusive Japanese restaurants that do it all and prefer to go specifically to a sushi-specific joint. But this place was quite the pleasant surprise - on top of many other offerings, they serve some amazing sushi. The quality of the fish was beaming fresh. The fish-to-rice ratio on all the rolls was just perfect. My friends who got the vegetarian rolls were also quite satisfied. Great food all around, and really friendly service to top it off. Will definitely be back here - likely one of the best sushi stops around!

Fantastic. Went for lunch. My wife and I ordered a Bento each and one side dish. Everything was delicious and we were stuffed, yet also amazed at how well priced our meal was. Will definitely come here again on our next trip to Victoria.

Japanese hidden gem. I’m a big fan of Fujiya, but I am not currently working in the neighborhood so I stumbled upon Bon Sushi and I am thrilled. I have had lunch twice now and I find it truly delicious. It’s pick up only, there is a bench to sit on outside, the staff is super friendly, service is fast, items are yummy!
David Nguyen
Had the bento lunches with my partner. The koroke were delicious.

This is the best sushi I have had in Victoria. The specials roll are not the most exciting but the flavour, quality and amount you get is so worth trying this place. The food is so good and cheaper than many other sushi places. 100% would recommend to anyone looking for sushi in Victoria.

The best sushi roll I had so far try the Red dragon! Great quality of teriyaki beef! Been looking for an authentic Japanese restaurant and they have great customer service as well! Highly recommended visiting all the way from Edmonton AB

Everything was fresh and delicious. I've never had better Miso soup. The salmon Bento was very moist. The garnish wasn't a garnish but actual fresh sweet fruit!

I lived in Japan for years and this is my favorite place in Victoria. The salmon sashimi tastes so similar to what I could get there, and it’s not stringy, it perfectly melts in the mouth. Their rolls are perfection and the miso soup authentic.

Amazing prices, exemplary service, and the best sushi I’ve had in town. If you’re looking for dinner, these people are looking to feed you and your soul.

The food here is outstanding!!! The staff are always so lovely and are amazing at their job!! One of the best sushi places in victoria!!!

Our fave sushi in town!! Great value, amazing quality and always excellent service. We love how they have shifted to such an efficient pick-up option during Covid!

Such a cozy place for an afternoon dinner 😂 They serve dishes really quick and nice, and the food here is super delicious and fresh! There is only one thing I don’t understand: why is your floor sooooooooo oily and slippery? I almost fell down walking in this restaurant.

Some of the best sushi we’ve ever had. Consistently great food, professional and friendly staff, and clean! Love it.

I have now been to 3 Sushi places in Oak Bay. This one is a good choice, it has fresh fish and competitive prices. A very friendly owner and staff. A good place for a quick and inexpensive lunch. Recommended!

Really enjoyed it, tried the imperial roll on recommendation of the very friendly waitress, it was excellent, also had a wonderful tako sunamono. Definitely going to try to come here again.

Edit: came again, and was very happy with the service and food. Definitely worth it.

Don't expect fancy , just good food, good service and good prices. Little spot I suspect is family run - resulting in great stuff. Husband had Teriyaki Chicken. He loved it. Generous with the very tender chicken. Best Chicken - he said - he has had on the island. I had the Empress Roll - ate every bite. Nice to have dinner under $20. Would return for sure! Thank You!

Sushi was delicious but we ordered to go and decided we actually wanted to eat there. I purchased the sushi and asked the waitress if it was okay to eat our meal in the restaurant, she responded with "No actually it's not". Stunned at the absurdity, I immediately left. I would have assumed it would be perfectly fine to do this as the restaurant was virtually empty, but apparently it was not. I have always enjoyed the service and food at Bon Sushi, but now I may reconsider going back there.

Probably the beet sushi restaurant to go in oak bay area. Delicious food with good presentation of the dish. Friendly staff. Highly recommend.

I Love the Crown Ebi Roll and the Friendly Staff. I love the Crown Ebi Rol!!!! The staff is great and it is very kid friendly!

Great sushi!. This place is great for dining in and take-out. They're pretty fast even on days when they are quite busy. Service is alright; however, food is amazing. My favourite sushi roll is the Palm Springs roll and it is my go-to! Definitely would recommend this place!

This place clearly doesn't care about their customers. I asked for a Dynamite combo and asked to pay extra for wild salmon, which they said no, then I asked for a cheaper inari nigiri because I'm allergic to snapper, which they said no. Finally ordered what I wanted at a higher cost, then when I asked for change for a $20, they said no. Unbelievable, never been told no so many times in a visit as a customer to a restaurant. I will never recommend this place and will happily tell everyone I know in Oak Bay never to go to this place! They should care about their customers more. Worst experience I've had at a sushi restaurant.

NOT gluten free. Well I haven't had the honour of eating here even though it is indicated on this site that they are gluten free friendly.
I called there and the woman insisted they have nothing that is gluten free.
This is not a gluten free friendly restaurant.
Too bad. I am actually sad.

Terrible customer service. Felt like the staff didn't want you there. They closed early and turned people away.

It has its on and off days. On its good days I must say its really good! The fact they charge for bagged tea is odd but that's their business not mine. I know in future to not order tea. The service is slow so take out is a must if you want to enjoy your food without having to rely on service. The miso soup is powdered! Shocking! I can't eat it since its fish powder!

4 of us just had a really great meal there this evening. We went fairly early, and the service was amazingly quick and the sushi and meals excellent. The Panko breaded oysters were also a new treat and in my mind great value too. Ambiance is nothing to write home about but you know that before you sit down. Great local sushi option for sure! Thanks for being there!

Calamari Roll. Best sushi everrrr
spicy tuna is really good too

calamari roll is so good and specialty and only like 5.50 or so I get it all the time.

Restaurant was dirty, especially bathroom, service friendly, order wrong, didn't replate, food very tasty.

Let your staff keep their tips, Bon Sushi!. I will not return, ever, to this restaurant until whoever runs the place stops compelling the servers to turn over their tips for the purpose of paying other restaurant expenses. This is totally unacceptable and wrong and I will not patronize this restaurant until it changes.
Mike
No ethics... I've had a chance to talk with one of servers and I found something we should know..I heard that the servers are forced to share their tips with all kitchen staff, including head cook and even the owner. So more than 60% of the tip money goes to the kitchen staff and to the owner. I'm just telling you the ugly truth about this restaurant.
Elvis
Decent food, smelly bathroom, fair prices, quiet servers need to speak up, WIFI, service was fast for the third time, I give it a 3.2 out of 5.

Good Food . . . . Horrible Customer Service . . . . Again. I now need to decide whether I will ever return to this restaurant after two "unacceptable" situations.
The first occurred last fall. Our order was "lost". The waitress returned 45 minutes after we placed our order and asked for it again stating she didn't know where it went. No apology or compensation was offered. I did not leave a tip.
The second situation arose last night. We arrived between 7:30 and 7:40. When our main order arrived, our bill also arrived with an announcement that the restaurant was closing soon. I thought this was unusual but paid immediately (with a tip). Twenty minutes after the restaurant closed (we were never told what time the restaurant closed) we were told we had to leave. We weren't quite finished our beverages!
I am concerned about this restaurant . . . . . food is good (not great) and creative . . . . . service is shockingly poor.

Love it. Bon Sushi is my go-to sushi place in Victoria because the food is always amazing and the pricing is fairly good. Whenever I go there, I order the goma-ae. it is absolutely delicious and one dish of it is usually not enough so i order two when i go there with other people. The ebi sunomono salad is wonderful, as well as the dynamite roll. they serve a deep-fried tofu roll that I'm a little hesitant to try, but most likely will next time. Service is okay, but it's a very casual place and the food is so great and reliable that the service doesn't really matter for me. I'd recommend it to anyone.
Ray B
It's a good place. However, coming from VanCity, the selection seems disappointingly limited of variety. For example, where's the Agedashi Tofu? Rating: 4/6

Contrary to most reviews. I really don't know why everyone gives this place such stellar reviews and why it is rated so high. i work very close to their oak bay location and have been there multiple times and each time my experience has been terrible.

the staff is not friendly, impossible to understand, and unusually pompous. they definitely do not know what the meaning of customer service is, in english OR japanese.

the food is okay but ridiculously expensive considering the quality. also they don't have agedeshi tofu... what kind of sushi restaurant does not have agedeshi tofu??!! but apparently their royal oak location has it, which leads me to question why they can't simply add it to their menu considering that half their menu is deep fried anyways and that having tofu wouldn't exactly be hard.

considering the price in proportion to quality and the lack of service, i recommend the Fairways across the street, which has suprisingly good tofu, almost on par with Bon Sushi, and at half the price.

Overcharged. Ordered "tuna roll" from the menu... at pick up, they made a larger 8pc version that wasn't on the menu here, charged 68% more for only 25% more food. rip off !! if you say "tuna roll" i think they should clarify with you if you don't specify size

Bon indeed!. I've been to both locations (Royal Oak and Oak Bay) a few times and even though it's the same owners, for some reason I've found the Royal Oak one to be superior (chefs/decor?). The sushi is delicious and they certainly have some of the most creative rolls in town. I still give preference to Ebizo and Shizen in the quality department, but Bon is pretty much in a league of it's own in Victoria with presentation and creativity.

Fresh and delish. It's so disappointed when I go to sushi restaurants and their veggie roll consists of a measly carrot and cucumber inside. Bon Sushis veggie rolls are packed with fresh veggies such as red bell pepper, greens, shitake mushroom, cucumber, carrot, and avocado....mmm!

The best fusion rolls try the baked salmon and or Cali fry roll. Both so good even those that are not a fan of traditional sushi will love these.

I went there with my dad to get dinner for my family and they made us wait forever before we ordered and then they said that it would take 15 minutes to prepare our food so me and my dad walked around oak bay and came back 15 minutes later and they made us wait another 5 then they got our order wrong so then we had to go back and wait another 15 minutes for them to correct order and it wasn't worth all that wait to be honest

Oak Bay Gem. I love Bon Sushi...the prices are terrific and the food quality compares to downtown restaurants that cost more. I love that they offer a twist on traditional sushi with their fusion rolls. Who says you should be exactly like everyone else? No complaints about the staff - they are very friendly and efficient. It gets pretty hopping busy in there - looks like a steady stream of take-out going on so it keeps them on the move, I imagine! My only complaint...paint those walls! A nice red (like the sign) or warm beige and it won't feel like a hole-in-the-wall but more like the gem that it is.

If it tastes like it came from a food court.... I will preface this review by saying that we stopped by at around 19:45 (45 mins before closing) on a Wednesday night. My comments about the rice should take this into account, but it's still no excuse.

Too tired to cook, need something to eat after work. It's a pretty common story. That's how I, regrettably, ended up at Bon Sushi last night.

My girlfriend just moved into an apartment only two blocks from Bon Sushi and thought we would try it out. It was close to closing time when we arrived, but only one other table was occupied; yet two tables remained unswept and dirty throughout our meal. I was expecting some pretty cheap sushi when I came in, but the prices were up there with much, much higher quality restaurants like Sen Zushi (my pick in Victoria). The menu was filled with all sorts of North American-style sushi, including baked and deep fried(!), and sushi with cheese(!!!). We were both starving, but otherwise I would have walked out right then and there.

The next complication came with my girlfriend's allergy to wheat. She can tolerate a little, but tempura is kind of hit or miss. What truly astounded me was that she found it difficult to order a wheat-free dish at a Japanese restaurant. More than half the rolls (her prefered sushi delivery method) had tempura something in them, and many were fried or baked with some sort of weat-including item. She enquired about a roll with "crab" to be informed that the "crab" contains weat. Now I know real crab is expensive and pollock is common nearly everywhere, but I just couldn't believe this.

She settled on two rolls, and I ordered an ebi sunomono salad and a charashi don. My sunomono salad tasted more like sugar dissolved in white vinegar with a little ginger ale, and my charashi don contained tuna, salmon, and yellowtail on a big heap of old, dry rice with the texture of crushed foam packing peanuts. If I closed my eyes, I could not distinguish between the three varieties of sashimi they were so universally bland. The rolls fared no better, being utterly bland and flavourless.

All told, the bill came to $30, for sushi quality that I would expect to pay half that ammount for at a food court or a corner store's cooler. I could have ordered the exact same items at Sen Zushi and have been treated to excellent quality, expert preperation, and not having to choose between either having my sushi rolls deep fried or with cheese.

I know Japanese food and sushi can be done better for this price, and it's a disservice to the customers to serve such low quality product.

Great staff, great atmosphere, great food. Opposite from the comment below, I find the younger staff high-energy and charming. The food is great and the place wouldn't be the same without the upbeat, cheerful servers who, during my visits, are nothing but attentive and helpful.

Ok so I gave this place a "Like" however it comes with a big "but". The food is amazing, the prices are very reasonable, and the decor insde is on par for a "hole-in-the-wall" sushi place. The service however is lacking. Every single time I have gone the servers, who look to be 16-18 year old high school students more interested in chatting amongst themselves then to be attentive to customers. If you want service, you have to make yourself heard, otherwise they just flit about. Honestly though the quality of food and speed in which it is made will have me coming back at least. They also have take-out as well, I have yet to try it though.

My fave. sushi in Victoria. I love Bon Sushi. We get take out at least once a week and it's always outstandingly delicious. I will agree with the previous poster who stated the decor is awful and the waiters have a hard time communicating however the sushi more than makes up for this.

I recommend the 'Cali Fry Roll'. It's life-changing.
Nelson Szeto
The decor isn't the greatest and the waiter couldn't really communicate well. All this wouldve been forgivable but the baked sushi was awful. It was california rolls with melted cheese and scallops on top. Horrible... The nigiri was okay buy expensive for the size. I don't know why this place was rated so high. I don't think I will be returning.
Ed Sum
I'd have to praise this operation for its new fusion innovations in the menu. I sampled more of the “cooked” side of the Japanese cuisine in their sushi, and I have to say: I’ll stick with the classic form instead.
Bernard Von Schulmann
I was happy with the rolls we got, though not blown away.
