Review Halibut House Family Restaurant - Victoria

Best Ginger Fried Beef in city. I Usually pair with a side of rice and Wonton Soup highly recommended.

I ordered out and got the dinner for two and added chicken chow mein. I didn’t get the name of the lady, but her service was spot on. Excellent. Best service I’ve had in a while and it was only take out. Really delicious Chinese food and would recommend giving it a try.
Debbie Kay
I recently discovered there're crispy chow main 😋 soo good but you're offered a protein, i said no last few times then thought can i get veggies, thinking they would give me crispy veg, henceforth the dish you pay extra for... no. By the time i opened the meal my veggies had soaked the noodles. Still good OBVIOUSLY, but when you crave 😋 an get,😕 just be aware still good.

The servers there are so friendly it makes you want to come back. This is my favorite Chinese takeout in Victoria by a long shot. Especially love the chicken chow mein.
Jackson Biehl
Favourite spot in Victoria for takeout Chinese food, the quality is good and consistent and the owners are friendly with great customer service. Not sure what that 1 star is on about but they clearly don’t know what they’re talking about.
Will Reiher
I'm impressed. Service was excellent and our server seemed to know other customer's names. Definitely has a diner feel and the Chinese food is exactly the way you remember it being when you were younger except much higher quality. They seem to do a bustling take out business and are busy at times. You'll want to reserve if your party has more than four people they have limited seating inside.
Renee Walrafen
This restaurant has become a regular takeout spot for us. Soooooooo delicious and reasonably priced. I love their wonton soup and all their combos!
Janice Mansfield
Great Western style Chinese food! The beans are grown fresh in the back of the restaurant, seasonally prepared, sleeper hit of this evenings dinner. Crispy Noodle chow mein was well made, lots of tasty addins

I have heard alot of good things about this place. And I was not disappointed. The food came fast and tasted great. The price you pay and the portion size you get were awesome. Even tea was delicious. It might be a small restaurant, but at the end of the day it's about the food. And you guys did great. I will 100% be back.
Antrina Marshall
We ordered almond chicken chop suey, and when we arrived home and opened it we found no almonds in the dish. Less than satisfied however the food was good.

Best Chinese food in the city! Since we moved to the area about a year ago, Halibut House has become one of our favourite parts of the neighbourhood. The food is reliably amazing, service is prompt, and it feels like this true hidden gem that I'm so happy to have discovered. It's hard to eat other Chinese food after having this stuff -- not that I've tried! Cannot recommend enough!
Greg Krantz
Delicious food. The wonton soup is to die for.
Jen
The food is so delicious. They are very very busy though. My husband was told to pick up 1hour and 45mins after we ordered, and then still waited for an hour once at the restaurant. I will say the food is so worth it. My goodness it is the best Chinese I have ever had.

We were staying at Accent Inn up the road while visiting Victoria and we had carry out Dinner for two and added the Mandarin shrimp. All of the food was excellent. The set menu mains came with Veggies in the dishes, they were fresh and crisp and the quantities were large. Enough for dinner and lunch the next day for both of us! This is a classic neighbourhood Chinese restaurant with great food and friendly service, just wish it was in my neighbourhood!

I have been eating here for years and I am never disappointed. Great quality food at a competitive price. Sherry and the staff are extremely friendly and welcoming. We just recently placed an order for 18 people for takeout and Sherry helped us to order exactly the right amount of food. It was ready at just the right time and was still warm when we sat down to eat. I highly recommend Halibut House!
Alegria Massa
Amazing food for a great price. Everything was super authentic and tasty. The only part they could improve on is making their fried food more crispy. The breaded almond chicken was good but not very crispy. Other than that everything was amazing.
Fiona Fogarty
Super yummy food and really friendly staff! It’s a small little place but a lovely neighbourhood feel to it.
Lisa Marie Oulton
Best chinese food! Fresh and hot, good healthy portions and affordable! We usually get it for take out. Friendly staff

Halibut House has the best Chinese food in Victoria! Great service and family friendly too! Our two year old daughter, Janalyn loves the food and visiting Sherry!
Adam Klassen
Too damn good!! Recommend to all of my friends and family

The best in town and live only a block from there. My mom also enjoy it when visiting as we go there

Best Chinese Food i have had . Homemade. I suggest the potstickers and the spicy beans ! The staff is always wonderful and remembers my family . Its a warm place to visit .
Scott Leslie
Decent family-friendly joint. Friendly wait-staff and decently priced good eats. Don't let the name fool you, this is mostly a Chinese restaurant.
Sonja Jn
They have great take out Chinese food! Time quoted was perfect, dishes were delicious....very impressed. No MSG! I would definitely order again.

The owner can be rather short tempered when stressed-which is often! We were very unhappy with a breaded chicken dish but the owner did not offer to change it etc. Overall the food is generally good. The prawn dish has shrunk by half since we started going there but the price has gone up.
Cory Mac
This food was amazing. So far my best experience in Victoria for Chinese food. Sweet and sour chicken balls, Shrimp chow main, crispy ginger beef and spring rolls. We ordered for Take out well worth every penny. Thank you for a great dinner.
Sherry Ulaszonek
I have lived in this neighbourhood for years and only just discovered that it has the best Chinese food in Victoria!  And no MSG.  We ordered take out and it was hot and very fresh  and delicious and ready on time.  The  staff was so friendly.  Nothing was overcooked,  the vegetables cooked to perfection ( not at all overcooked)    We included the organic fresh bean dish because I read another review raving about it.  Well add my name to the raves.
Littleherc
Take out from here, we ordered 6 dishes -- Singapore style noodles, black bean beef and vegetable rice noodles, ha gow, steamed bbq pork buns, fried rice, and spicy beans. It was all so delicious. We asked for light on the oil, and dang, it was good. Definitely will be ordering from here again. Some good home style cooked chinese and no msg.

I just left this place after waiting to be seated... Then to be told by the owners wife that there were 2 tables ahead of me to be served so there would be a bit of await.... Thinking to myself that I was not in a hurry I had no problem with that… but I suggested to her maybe I'll go elsewhere and she said that be a good idea....are you kidding me?.... This woman I believe has no concept on customer service..... So here I at another Chinese eating beef flank and tendons.....a couple bucks more but a much larger serving and well worth the switch.... Customer service is 5 stars here!

Sherri and Leslie will take good care of you. Ask for recommendations, and you can't go wrong. They'll even give you tips on how to serve their food as left overs. When we dine-in, we get enough food for two meals and then take home the rest. Yum.

If you are looking for a fancy place this is not it. If you are looking for delicious, fresh and tasty food you must check this place out. The honey sesame chicken is amazing. Will return if I am ever back in Victoria

Rude experiences..... The food here is ok...However the customer service requires improvement. The first time I called them to order, it advertises they deliver. So when I called to inquire, the employee quite rudely interrupted me and abruptly stated they never deliver. Ok, no big deal, menus change as do services. We were a regular take out customer for some time and figured we would dine in tonight. We get there, it's a Friday night so it's pretty busy and we expect a table wait. The server comes over, asks if we are picking up or dining in. We ask to dine in, to which she responds "it's pretty busy, about twenty minute wait, so how about some other time?". She was quite hesitant to even put our name down. She told us to "think about it" and left. The majority of restaurants would take your name and allow you to wait. Unfortunately tonight, this was not the case and the experience left a sour taste in our mouth. We no longer be returning.

Christmas Eve Take Out. Enjoyed a really good take out from Halibut House yesterday evening. The food was at least a notch or two above the usual expected for a Chinese take out - good, clean, bright, fresh flavours, and very well-presented even in the cartons. Efficient and friendly service too. Definitely recommended.

Yes!. Hard-working people, good food at a good price and a warm welcome. Lots to like.

Delicious!. I live right by Halibut House & keep coming back! Great service, amazing food with fresh, deliciously cooked ingredients, and a comfortable atmosphere. One of my favourite restaurants on Southern Van. Island!
Cmonster
Check your bill!. We've been going here for many years as we do like the food but we've learned to always check the bill. Several times higher prices than those on the menu have appeared on the bill. When we brought it to the attention of the server they've always been reluctant to correct their mistake. Never have we received an apology.

Open for business on Tuesday August 12, 2014. Home made Autumn Moon Cakes for sale now.

Food better than the service. I have been going to Halibit House for over a year. Their food is better than their service. Let me tell you about their service......<br/>They tend to know their regulars by their first name that is 90% of their customers. The place is always packed. They remember small things that make a person feel special, like bringing you hot sauce, or spices or water because they remember you like them. They will rember your favorites and also suggest foods you may like. For my wife they noticed that she would not eat the batter of the fish. They figured out on their own she might not be able to eat wheat. For her and her only they made a special batter so she could enjoy the full tastes of their halibit. The chiefs come by and give you a smile a hand sake or what ever is appropreate to say your important. The same can be said about the service. Sherry and Leslie are simply incredible. Family frendly and a fun atmostphere.<br/>They simply treat you like royality. Now on your first visit they may not be able to know your name, make special dishes...... But rember the food is better than the service! That is very very hard to do.

Great food, friendly service, great prices. We have been going to the Halibut house regularly for years, and have introduced it to friends and family. It's the best Chinese food around. No MSG, everything is clean, fresh, and reliably good. Prices are great, as well. The owner and waitress knows her regulars by name, and is always friendly, helpful and approachable.
Gastronomy
A good little Chinese restaurant. Westernized Chinese food but very flavourful and consistently good. Plus they don't use MSG, apparently, which is important to us.

School Catering. On behalf of Mrs. Westby's grade two/three class we would like to thank the Halibut House for providing a catered Chinese lunch for our class. Our class really liked the Chinese lunch. We especially enjoyed the carrot cabbage Chow Mien and the fortune cookies. The food was hot and tasty and fantastic value for the price. We also had alot of fun.
Stefan
Consistently very good. Pretty good, and consistent,<br/><br/>We like the place eat in or take out.<br/><br/>Beef and rice noodle, s and p squid and prawns very good.
Jellyfish
I tried this place because of all the favourable reviews but was sorely disappointed. It most definitely is NOT authentic Chinese food. This is Chinese food for western tastes. At the same time, the restaurant was packed with people (non-Asian) when I was there... so it must be enjoyable for many. Be aware if you decide to visit.
Ehahaha
Good, but not that good.. Pretty good food, would return again. Server was reasonably nice, food was reasonably tasty.<br/><br/>Not near the best Chinese food I've had, though, and I'm surprised at such a high rating.
Kieran Quan
Halibut House is some of the best Chinese food I have had coast to coast. It reminds me of how my grandma cooked when I was a kid. Worth the trip. Try the egg tarts.
Brettzke
Amazing food. The salt and pepper prawns were the best prawns I've ever had. The sole dish was fantastic (#9).
Jessc
Tough reviewers, but good food!. I usually check reviews before going to a restaurant to see what I can expect, and I can tell you that thanks to the poor reviews on here, I was pleasantly surprised. <br/><br/>I ordered (for take out) the chicken chow mein, sweet and sour pork, breaded almond chicken, veggie chop suey and spring rolls. I LOVED the chow mein - the most flavourful I've ever tasted, and the portion was awesome. The pork was tender and the sauce excellent, but the almond chicken was the only item I wouldn't order again. It needs a side sauce! The waitress said they didn't have one for it, which is a shame because without it, it's simply deep fried chicken with no flavour.<br/><br/>Maybe I have a naive palate, or previous reviewers have sky-high standards, but I think that if you are looking for some good chinese take-out, this is a fine place to choose. <br/><br/>TL;DR if you like Fairway chinese, you'll like this place!
Customerx
I worry about telling too many people about this place.
Dan Reid
Terrible Service don't bother. Almost as bad as Stage for poor service. Waited for over 15 mins as the waitress addressed every table that came in after me (3 in total) including a group of six. Finally, got up and left. Don't waste your time here go to James Bay Fish and Chips instead.

Review for halibut house.... I have been to many places in Victoria, and in my opinion this restaurant is the best quality in it's class. End of story. GOOD FOOD! I am surprised that anyone would write a negative review on this place at all, makes me wonder if the competition is writing nonsense reviews... I will continue too be a frequent customer too this establishment.

Wonderful!. We visited Victoria during Spring Break. Decided to locate this restaurant because of the high ratings. It wasn't hard to find and totally worth it. <br/>when the parking lot is packed, you know its a good place. We weren't disappointed! the restaurant was crowded and we had to wait a bit, but we will always wait for excellent food. What i really liked was that our server made recommendations as to popular dishes and specials. We went with her suggestion and it was just really fresh, top quality food. We had leftovers to take back to the hotel and had a yummy breakfast the next day. Awesome food and service!

Our go to chinese takeaway. My partners favourite chinese food restaurant. Good portions, always good food & friendly service.
Gunstar_Hero
Disappointed. Seeing this place so highly ranked makes me wonder where people have been eating. We ate here and it was a disappointment. It was more expensive than it should have been, perhaps if it was cheaper and had it tasted better we would have been less disappointed. <br/>I found that the salt and pepper squid was soggy and had corn starch aftertaste. The kung pao chicken was decent. The noodle dish(shanghai noodles) was plain and lacking in flavour. There were insufficient spices on the food. I am from Vancouver and am used to flavorful chinese food with interesting textures. It was not as spicy as we could have hoped for.<br/>Will not go back here, despite knowing friends who go here once a week. Not worth the price either.<br/>Edit:<br/>Also, I do not work for the competition, as a previous review mentioned. I just have a different opinion, so there is no need to get people's backs up.
Grizzlies03
No complaints. Went for lunch and was very excited because of all the great reviews. but I didn't find it amazing or anything, except the shrimp dumplings, loads of flavor. everything else we ordered BBQ buns, curry dish, beef flank were just average. Food was nicely presented and good service. When the lady went to close the blinds, dust was falling on my little boy, so I was swatting it away, funny :) Door knob was weird with the tape all around it and parking sucks, but that is not their fault. Will go back to try the dinner menu.
Kitty
Consistently good, always friendly... Not much curb appeal if driving by, but take the time to try it!
Markus Thibeau
Solid food. The hot and sour soup was very good. The combination plates they have are fairly priced and delicious. Been there twice now and will keep coming back

With some hesitation regarding this restaurant my wife convinced me to give it a try and so we did...well, I'm a Believer!! Although a bit on the pricey side I must admit it was some of the best Chinese food I've eaten in sometime...the Ginger Beef was simply amazing...we also ordered the mixed veggies which was excellent...fresh and nice assortment of vegetables...and we finished it with the pan fried prawns which also came with some veggies...every flavour was distinct from the other and all were exceptionally good...I will most definitely return as I am now a Believer!!
Dancingfoodie
Doesn't live up to the reviews for us- salt and pepper squid breading left a mushy cornstarch aftertaste, ginger beef was okay (could be more gingery- they should use real ginger in addition to powdered). The shanghai noodle sauce was not spicy as described (I wanted a Singapore fun/udon noodle dish so this came close) so we added more chili garlic paste at home and it was okay. Kung pow chicken was good. Not sure why this place has such a high rating- will go to Wing's next time because their food is better and hella cheaper.
Ummmmm...Food
Not worth paying for. We ordered take out, my husband a dinner combo which was suppose to have 4 items, only 3 were with it and out of the 3 he said the sweet 'n sour pork was great, the chow mein not good and the steamed veggies gross. <br/><br/>I ordered the veg chow mein. It was bottom end :( My spring roll was good, my husband wished that they remembered his. I wouldn't reccomend the food to anyone, it's very average and I could cook better.

This is how it should be !. YUM - Tried their Chinese tonight for the first time, Salt pepper squid has been a fav of mine for so long but never had it THIS good !<br/>Everything came to the table fresh and hot(almost too hot...but that is a good thing !)<br/>Some of the spicy items could be a bit spicier BUT other than that I have not had a meal that good from a Chinese restaurant in a long long time.<br/>Just perfect, looking forward to going back soon ! ! !
Debbie L
Best chinese food we've had in years. We love the spicy green bean's, they are always perfectly tender crisp. The gai lan in black bean sauce is great. Everything we get has been good.<br/>This is a small family run restaurant with a friendly young woman who seats you and takes your order and her husband who is the chef in the back.<br/>If you want something differant than what is on the menu they always seem happy to oblige. <br/>They also do a very brisk takeout business.
Tara Daley
Had Halibut House for the first time last night. It was ok, nothing to write home about. We normally order from Fonbo, but they are closed on Sundays and we had family from the mainland over for dinner. My brother didn't realize we were eating from a different restaurant. Bottom line for me: decent food, but not worth the extra money. We will continue to go to Fonbo. Oh and lastly: Halibut House doesn't do egg foo young, dry garlic ribs, or honey garlic ribs!! Made me sad!

Chinese and less so fish and chips.. I used to live near the corner and ate here a lot. The Chinese options are all pretty tasty, hands down my favorite ginger beef in town. Avoid the fish and chips if you can make it to Red Fish Blue Fish, Nautical Nellies, Fairfield F&C or Salty's F&C.
Urban Explorer
Worth the time and $$. Great selection even for my fussy, bland palate. We took guests there and feed a table of 4 for under $75 including the tip. We left with full tummies. Most other guests were asian and much more adventurous in their meal ordering than us - that has to say a lot :-) Would definitely return here. Our server was new, but ever so polite, friendly and helpful.

Authentic Chinese Food -- Quantity plus quality. This is the first Chinese restaurant where the quantity of food matches the quality of food. In Victoria, the trend is to charge as much as possible while serving as little as possible. When I ordered the house rice, to my surprised it was enough to feed at least four people. I have been here numerous times, and the food and quality of services has been consistent.
Deb
Wow!!!! The food was amazing and service was top notch! I'll never have Chinese anywhere else!
Charlottecowley
HUGE customer service fail. Food was late (an hour for delivery very near by), delivery driver couldn't get the card reader machine to work - tried two cards two times each, waited 10 minutes at my front door as he tried over and over again, food was cold, gave them my number to call me back and get my credit card number. They called, I missed the call and called them back. I got some women who barely spoke English then hung up on me. They called me back the next day, charging full price - I asked for a discount for the inconvenience and got none. They said that because they had to call me back the next day I couldn't get a discount (not my fault!) and that they'd give me a 10% discount on my next meal; we'll see if that happens... but then again why would I go there again? <br/><br/>Overpriced, late, frustrating, cold and not apologetic!
Yummy
Just o.k.... My husband and i have been living 2 blocks from this place for over 6 years and finally decided to give it a try today. We read some reviews and decided to order what they were apparently known for - house Chow mein, ginger beef, mandarin jumbo prawns and spicy green beans ( not on the menu). Ginger beef was probably the only thing that was good at best and everything else was really just o.k. Our biggest disappointment was the "famous" green beans which were plentiful but not overly flavorful and way over priced ( no one should have to pay $ 14 dollars for beans). Service for pick up was very friendly and food was not overly greasy . Not the worst Chinese food we have ever had but definitely way overpriced for what you get.. ie $ 60 for 4 take away dished :(<br/>Really just o.k.
Chris Kasztner
This place has the best chinese cuisine I have ever tasted. You can really taste that they use fresh ingredients, and the the dishes that the chef has prepared have achieved a level that I would consider far above anything that could be considered the good standard for chinese food in Victoria. I regret not giving this place a chance years ago, and writing it off based on how it looks from the street. This place is amazing and deserves more attention.
Corky
HH is excellent. Very delicious chinese food. Loved the spicy green beans (not listed on the menu), salt and pepper squid, sweet and sour pork and ginger chicken. Will be coming back to try other dishes. Nice, helpful staff. Can be very busy with take out orders.
Nomnom
Best Chinese food in Victoria, hands down.
Nic
This place is a dump. Food is mediocre and the place is not clean.
Kim Valgardson Zinke
A really busy place. The green beans (not listed on the menu) were incredible. Also really enjoyed the crispy honger fried chicken and mandarin prawns. Lots of food. Small bowl of soup easily provided 6 bowlfuls. Will definitely be back.
Luke P
Best Chinese in Victoria so far. In fact, it might even be the best Chinese I've had in Vancouver too. Fantastic food. My personal favourites are the sweet and sour pork (the texture and crispiness of the pork is unreal), the spicy beans, and the chicken balls, which are by far the best I've ever had.<br/><br/>This is exactly what a small, family run restaurant should be. Good, personal service with awesome food and an obvious desire to keep you as a customer.
Debbi D
We've just discovered halibut house after years of driving past. We've had Chinese there a few times now and it has always been fabulous! So fresh, bit greasy and great flavor. We had the halibut and chips tonight, but I think we'll stick to Chinese from HH.
Bitties Love Snacks
Delicious. Halibut House is just around the corner from our house, and my roommate and I were patiently waiting for it to re-open for weeks (the owners were on vacation). It was well worth the wait! The woman at the door who took our order was really friendly and the food was ready for takeout very quickly. We had pea egg foo young, ginger beef, vegetable chow mein, and steamed rice and everything was tasty without being overly greasy. We will be back!
John
The best cantonese food. After driving by this place for years, I finally went in about 10 months ago - it was a great surprise. Shari (?) and the rest of the staff are friendly and helpful. More importantly, the food is outstanding. The place bustles on weekend evenings, so make a reservation. The decor is plain, but the room is intimate and fun. The Halibut House is the best!
Ncm2
Very good food. Friendly pleasant place.. Fine fresh and very good food served with a smile. I really like and recommend this restaurant even after a single visit.
Bang4Buck
Good,Healthy,Affordable. I recently moved to Victoria and work very close to the Halibut House.<br/>It's the only restaurant nearby and man was I pleasantly surprised by how good the food is there.<br/>The food is fresh, not greasy, wonderful tasting and affordable. <br/>Fantastic.
Kirsty Armstrong
So fantastic. Easily my new favorite place. Heaps of things not on the menu, ask them to pick for you! We've been back several times and the service is always friendly and the is amazing (with the exception of the fish and chips, don't even bother).
Richard C.
Really nice waiter and the food was ok. Prices were a bit expensive. They serve fish n chips and Chinese food.
Justin
Best in town. My wife and I eat here all the time, best chinese food in town, we've tried them all. Hong Kong style black bean chow mein, sweet sour pork, lemon chicken, everything's great. I Promise you wont be disappointed.
Kikadee
The Best in Town. I love Halibut House, and order take-out at least twice a month. The food is fresh and flavourful, msg-free and they seem to use minimal "grease." I never feel that I've polluted myself after eating food from Halibut House, you know? You can tell that they keep their deep-fryers clean and change the oil often. <br/><br/>The green beans are definitely a highlight--all of their veggie dishes are great, crisp and tasty, mmmm bokchoy--but here are some others must-haves:<br/><br/>Deep-fried ha gow (which you can also get pan-fried, I think): chewy pockets STUFFED with FAT shrimp and lots of 'em. I've never seen these anywhere else, and they are divine. <br/><br/>Dumplings: their version of gyoza, very tasty<br/><br/>Wor Won Ton Soup: one order serves two people, and each person will, without fail, end up with a bowl full of chicken, bbq pork, prawns, bok choy, mushrooms, pea-pods, water chestnut and lots of yummy won tons. They do not skimp on the goods in this soup!<br/><br/>Sweet 'n' Sour Pork: best in town, as far as I'm concerned<br/><br/>House Special Chow Mein: delicious, no fake mystery meat strips, not greasy.<br/><br/>Anyway, if you decide to dine in, don't let the small space and not-exactly-Asian decor dissuade you. Sherry's an attentive hostess (I think she owns it with her husband, who is the chef....) and service is very polite, and they welcome kids, and there's a 10% discount if you order take-out.
Rick Dean Starr
The garlic green beans are #1 most requested item on the menu!
Ed Sum
Tapas seem to be the hottest trend these days, and these lounges that offer small sized portions of food is not a place I'd often go to. After this dine-in experience, I have found a new place to induldge in one particular guilty pleasure: enjoying fusion cuisine.
Bronners
The ginger chicken had a great sauce that was not overly gooey or sweet, just right. The sweet and sour pork was tender and had just the right balance of sweet and vinegar without the use of too much thickening corn starch.
