Review 5th Street Bar And Woodfired Grill - Victoria

The food was so so good and flavourful., every bite was tasty. The plate presentation was appealing. This was the second time I dined here and was not disappointed. The atmosphere was pleasant and the staff were nice. It is a great place to dine with friends and family.

Been here periodically over the span of several decades and the food never cease to amaze me. Full on taste without breaking the bank; something like this is very hard to find especially in the tough current economy and ridiculous spiraling cost of living in this city. There are many restaurants that come and go over time or those who stick around but the quality has gone downhill. This establishment is neither that and has maintained its wholesome reputation all this time. The server was polite and attentive, we were seated in the booth area away from the crowd indoors but close to the patio. The environment is just right; the food came very promptly so if you need to eat fast and go in an absolute hurry but at the same time you're not rushed at all with the bill to leave.

Maybe I'm ordering the wrong items, or my taste buds are wonky? Highlights: Great service Atmosphere Location Saw a number of group tables which looked happy Wheelchair accessible (looked like it to me, which is nice) Extra things to consider: Parking My experiences won't really stop me from coming back. We have family dinners for peoples birthdays and we manage to rotate as best as we could around restaurants in Victoria, so I'm sure someone will choose this place as a venue again. Overall, family members (party of 9) mostly were pleased with their meal. All of us was happy with the service. We didn't feel forgotten, or felt like we were inconveniencing them. Atmosphere is always consistent and warm when you walk in. The outdoor patio looks comfortable. My only complaint is the food... never seems to be enough in fries (ok sorry, I guess potatoes are going up in price). My husband ordered the strips and fries (strips are always good, with the honey mustard), but the fries portion keeps seemingly getting smaller every year we come back. My pizza was good, but just good; seemed more like a fancy flat bread. It felt like it was alright, but felt like something was missing. The Artichoke dip was flavourful, no complaints there- nicely cheesy, had good consistency, didn't feel like we were really saving on portions so much. Since the place does get busy, it's good to maybe note that parking could get tricky. We had to park a little further down at the residential street. Again, maybe I'm just nit-picking, but I'll probably be back. I will just say the service is always good.

A great spot for hanging out with friends, conveniently located near work. Offers a wide variety of food choices and excellent customer service

Natasha was so nice and her service was excellent. One of the nicest servers ever. I has the rotisserie chicken. It's always delicious.

They're pizzas in the wood oven. Are fantastic. Not floppy and overdressed stiff, toasty crust and food ingredients. I usually sit at the bar and the bartenders are very accommodating & friendly. They have great seating, very comfortable. Outside seating is good in the summer...and lots of parking behind the building.

Round two & Redemption (from August 2022): We thought we would give this place another shot and glad we did! The food was spectacular and service was on point!! From 6 months ago (January 2022): The great venue and atmosphere was enhanced by the fantastic service and food!!! The wait- staff were amazing! So much so that we came back the next night after a long evening's work (6 hours) at exactly the same time, but sadly to find out the kitchen staff decided to shut down early to have a few pops. The night before was fantastic, the next night... not so much.

I have been going to fifth street for quite some time and always enjoy the food and atmosphere. However last night was my best experience by far. I had a reservation for 545 and was sat in the restaurant side near the back. The restaurant was full and had a great cozy atmosphere. Our server was absolutely amazing always there when we needed something and the food was spot on. I had the chicken and ribs and my wife had the steak everything was coooke perfectly. I wish I had got our servers name as I would have personally gave her a shout out as it was probably the best service I ve had at a restaurant all year. I thank you and we will be back next weekend.

Nice food, especially the steak. It was perfectly cooked. And the sides tasted fantastic.

Very much looking forward to coming here again. The atmosphere and decor were stellar. I had the 1/4 chicken and rib dinner and everything was delectable, including the coleslaw which usually never finds its way off the plate. The gravy was out of this world and everything on the menu was very reasonably priced.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at 5th St. and it was truly a fantastic experience. The Quadra St. Burger I ordered was incredibly tasty, cooked to perfection, and bursting with flavour. However, what made my visit memorable to me was the outstanding service provided by the waiter. Their attentiveness, friendliness, and genuine passion for ensuring a wonderful experience truly stood out.

I'm in love with the French fries fooo lol.. All good, but it'll be better if they start selling NEWCASTLE OR Sammy Adam's or something like that!!! And the good-looking ladies, of course!!🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩😉
Christopher Skleryk
Never had a bad time or meal here. Staff are brilliant, fabulous location, awesome chicken wings, tenders, burger and more, not just dog friendly, they love em! Trivia night is always busy. Good crew of people.

My wife and I ate here about 10 years ago. Food was great, but for some reason we never went back. We stopped for lunch yesterday (July 16). I got the buffalo burger, it was amazing! All the food was fantastic, and the prices were far cheaper than I would have ever guessed. Total cost was $40 for two adult meals and two kids meals. We will DEFINITELY be back every time we are in Victoria! I should also add that the waitress was very friendly and helpful, and didnt seem the least bit annoyed that our 9 month old threw half his food on the floor. ———- Went here again today (February 2020). Has been a long time since our last visit! Food was still fantastic. Friendly staff. All good!

I absolutely recommend this place ... great food great atmosphere and service was perfect

I have been eating out alot lately with not much luck in regards to good service at all. The waitress here was kind and always smiling and relatively quick with the drinks and appies. She also suggested drinks to try. The half rotisserie chicken is a tonne of food and very tasty. All in all a great place for pub food and good service.

Tonight we had a really good time celebrating a birthday at 5th St. Our large party was all served at the same time and the food was great! I liked how the music was not too loud. Our server was very good. The birthday guest really enjoyed her free dessert ( we all had a little bit of it :) Thanks for a great night!
Lesley Taylor
Went here for the first time with a large party - 14 adults, and 4 kids. We were seated in the back room - very pretty, fairy lights, roaring fire, plants. Ashley was the server and was very nice. We all received our meals quickly, and judging from the comments from our party, everyone enjoyed them. I had a veggie burger and it was delicious! Nice choices, and very reasonable prices! I am looking forward to coming again.

My husband, toddler and I are here virtually every other week. The servers are friendly and the food is fantastic! Anytime we have family or friends visit, there is never any doubt on where to go for lunch/dinner. Love it here!

went on Friday night( July 14th/2017) for music bingo with old friends that came to town ( haven't tried the food yet) but it was a lot of fun playing music bingo and having a few drinks

Food was great. Server was attentive and courteous. Everyone enjoyed their meal

The food, the waiter, the ambience, the service....everything was excellent!
Philip Tsarnas
Great pizza and amazing service. Very friendly staff. Pizza that melts in your mouth.

My mom and I came in tonight for dinner. My mom is a bit picky but our server Genny was very patient. Thank you! Great food, service, and atmosphere.
Brenda Kipot
Went to this restaurant specifically for their Coconut Prawns which was still on the menu being displayed on their web last week but it was removed from the menu....I was SO DISAPPOINTED!! So had the mussels which were great followed by the seafood pasta which was exactly the same dish as the mussels except with a few prawns, two clams and noodles...the broth sauce was the same. Now no reason to go back as their menu is not so special any more.
Marie-Claire Patten
Great experience, best chicken tenders in town!! Awesome service too, everyone is so welcoming
Charles Martin
Lovely atmosphere, top service, very enjoyable food. From the outside you'd think it was "just another pub" -- nope!
Seumas Gagne
Nice location with parking, beautiful interior, good menu selections and very good food. Only four stars instead of five because the service was noticeably slow.

I love this place. Simply said. Sadly after four years of visiting my daughter while she was attending UVic, I won’t be able to enjoy this place as often as I have.

Great place, great food. Enjoyed sitting in the patio area. Went for a quick bite to eat. Appetizers menu had great fun and delicious choices.

Went here for a quick dinner on new years Eve. They weren't overly busy as many people were already in downtown waiting for fireworks. We seated ourselves in the pub side and it took awhile for anyone to come with menus and water as we were in the heated patio part. Their salmon salad was decent but a bit dry. I miss their tuna tataki salad they used to have with arugula and crispy yam. That's no longer in the menu and I would love it if they brought it back!
Pauline H
Fantastic customer service and delicious food. They have great poutine, pizza, fajitas, and chicken strips. Their creme brulee and wings were pretty solid too. I can't wait to try the rest of their menu.
Addie V
I was really impressed with the food here. The cook st. coconut prawns were so delicious they stole the show! I had an issue with the dish I ordered initially and they were nice enough to replace it very graciously! I wouldnt expect many restaurants to do that. Definitely appreciated the gesture and it shows their dedication to customer service! Would eat here again for sure!
Courtney
Their stone oven pizza is amazing. I go on Monday as all their pizzas are $10. Which is much easier on my wallet. They are known for their oven roasted chicken too, but I prefer their pizza. <br/><br/>Their pizzas are amazing!!! My new favourite pizza place.
A Tip Is A Gift Not A Right
If you like chicken strips this is probably the best place in Victoria. Went there for a pint and a bite. I was blown away by theirs. Crispy on the outside, so moist and juicy on the inside. Told my waitress apparently it's an in house recipe. <br/>I'll definitely be hitting them up again! Service was prompt and the waitress was knowledgeable!
Esdub
I ordered the half chicken. DELICIOUS! However, wasn't cooked all the way through so that was kind of a bummer. Gravy was too salty. I liked their fries.
Lauren.hyde
The food here is absolutely superb, and the service was warm and friendly. The place had a really great atmosphere. It's not one of my favourite local places to go get a beer and a wonderful meal.<br/>I highly recommend this place!

I used to frequent 5th Street on a regular basis since I moved here almost 10 years ago, but after trying it a few times after the new owners took over and the new menu came into fruition; I was highly disappointed. Huge change in customer service, not for the better. They took off the Fondue in addition to the baseball steak - my mainstays when I dine there! Overall, the food is not as nicely presented or tasting, the selection downgraded and service has gone very downhill. It's too bad - I enjoyed this place for many years.

This is our basketball team's favourite place to go after games for drinks & a quick bite. They have a nice patio with outdoor heat lamps. The prosciutto and arugula pizza is my favourite and it's on special after 10pm (I think they just changed it to only on Wednesdays, have to double check on this). Our server is Katie for the most of time on Wednesdays and she is the best - very friendly and attentive, always knows everyone's name and drinks. Her great service is another reason why we keep going back there!

We waited a very long time for our lunch. A group of 50 men came in and obviously their food slowed down our food. We were not told of this delay nor were we apologized to about it until we asked. Or server was apologetic about it when we asked about our food. Her manager on the other hand fought her about giving us a discount on our lunch regardless of the fact we had to wait 40 plus minutes. The food was good.

A nice place to chill with friends/co-workers. We went awhile ago but finally had time to write a review, we came as a big group for a company dinner. The waitress we had was attentive and very nice! I ordered the chicken fingers with a side of caesar salad. Both were good! Lettuce was fresh and crisp, IN HOUSE made honey mustard - which was delicious, chicken fingers were well made too. The appy's we had were good, however the 'pita' pieces we had I was not particularly fond of. Thin, too crunchy, I much preferred to dip other things into the spinach and artichoke dip. (Mm that dip was good) Portions are not bad, a lot of the co-workers took food home cause it was a lot. IM not fond of their pizza toppings, the pizza is not great but not bad. It's a nice spot for an evening where you don't wanna have it too formal and some decent grub. A few changes and it'd be a ton better

5th street has been a favorite spot for my friends and I for years. During the recent changes I began frequenting less often for various reasons... Drastic price increases, menu changes, etc etc. Sometimes change is sad, especially when you're really craving that prawn and lemon pepper pasta. Or those beef short ribs??? Amazing. Last week my friends and I went in and had a surprisingly GREAT experience and wonderful food. The pub looks fantastic. The buffalo burger is still the best in the city, the pizzas kick ass and they've added some delicious salads. Try the tuna salad (trust) And to our surprise, there are still familiar faces and our favorite server in the city took care of us. Leyla is proffesional, attentive, fun and charming and we've gone to the pub for years and been pleased every time we have had her as our server. Kudos to the chef, and everyone who makes fifth st. still totally awesome.
Chelsea
By far the worst food I've had in Victoria to date. Pizza tasted like microwave pizza, wings were soggy, and service was poor. Will never go back, would rather eat a microwave dinner. Do not eat here.
Luvdatbud
The fries weren't cooked in my12 dollar poutine. Slow slow service today
Smellofsunshine
What happened?. I've been going here for years and the standards are constantly slipping as the prices go up. The place wasn't that busy, but the server pretty much ignored us once we'd ordered our meal. By the time we were asked if we wanted another drink we had finished our meal. The pizza I ordered was incredibly greasy, the dough was soggy, so it completely fell apart when I tried to lift up a piece. I feel actually feel sick.

A place that thinks it's special....but isn't. Man, I REALLY wanted to order a burger (NOT a buffalo burger)...but it's a FROZEN PATTY! This has got to be the only "respectable" pub in town that serves that crap. Burgers are among the easiest things to make from scratch...what's the deal?! For 11 bucks it SHOULD be.<br/><br/>I ended up getting the buffalo burger in the end because I felt like most of the other stuff on the menu was either unappealing or over priced. The chicken strips and fries are 14 bucks, as is the veggie burger!<br/><br/>While the buffalo burger was great...sometimes a guy just wants a beef burger, you dig?<br/><br/>Service was friendly...beer was decently priced, though I feel like they should go closer to minimum drink pricing on their specials...<br/><br/>This place needs some work before I'll be excited about it again.

Not the same.... Half the people at my table sent their meals back . This used to a fabulous place to go and it's been such a disappointment lately. They had such a good thing going...why change that?<br/><br/>When I told the server that my burger wasn't cooked all the way through, her reply was, "It looks cooked to me."<br/><br/>Really? You have to do better than that.

Down Hill. This used to be one of my favourites, and since I work very close, we have gone there a lot. But since the new menu/management, I am just not feeling this place anymore. The last few things I ordered were "meh" at best, the service, drinks the same. I really miss the $5, $10, $15 menu, and even more I miss the flatbread with tapenade (they SAY they have an even better option now, but it is not).
Hungry Bear
Crowded House. After the morning of intense training, a bunch of hungry colleagues & I descended upon 5th Street for some well deserved lunch.<br/><br/>The restaurant was not busy, but the staff seemed unprepared and overwhelmed at the prospect of a accommodating a table for 7, and in fact the hostess/manager was a bit snarky when we requested the corner booth which would have been a comfortable option for us. Instead they pushed together a few deuces in the middle of the room.<br/><br/>Undaunted and famished, the first 5 of us sat and waited. And waited. Finally the server arrived and stood at the head of the table requiring us to each shout our drink order over the din of the restaurant. Eventually one of us requested a round of water for the table, and when the server returned with our glasses, we ordered our real drinks individually. While friendly, this was obviously an inexperienced and under-trained waiter.<br/><br/>More people for our party arrived, and the staff were quick to add table and chairs. Then we waited another good long time before our server returned to take orders for our meal - long enough for me to finish my glass of Sauvignon Blanc, nothing special, but not bad; long enough that my girlfriend finished her pot of tea; and long enough for the men to get through most of their pint of beer - thirsty conversationalists that we are. Hmmm. Server's strategy was a little too obvious, and remarked upon by at least one hungry companion.<br/><br/>I ordered the Fire Grilled Kale Salad, which included tasty chunks of roasted squash and garlic. Yum. Unfortunately the kale itself was seasoned beyond recognition...but I was so hungry by then, I managed to choke back the salty oily concoction...while looking longingly over at my friend's fresh 5th Street Greens and mentally noting to order that next time.<br/><br/>The gentleman to my right indulged in a good looking BBQ Buffalo Burger with fries, although strangely the bacon arrived after the plated entree. And two cohorts to my left enjoyed Fire Roasted BBQ Chicken Pizzas, upon my recommendation. I'm happy to say the kitchen did not let me down giving this advice :)<br/><br/>All in all the crowd was satisfied, and amazingly we introduced a few new future patrons to one of our favourite local stand-bys.
Sonia
I highly recommend the sunday brunch! Had the breakfast poutine 3 times now and its consistently amazing.
Diane Rebner
Half and half. My pasta was good, but I preferred it when the pasta was fetucini not penne, my husbands hot chicken sandwich was ridiculously small and the salad was dry. If he had not been able to eat some of my meal which was plentiful, he would have left hungry, never to return
Yummi
Terrible experience! The place wasn't busy and we waited over an hour for our food. I had ordered pasta and when it came after much apologies and excuses , it was soooo hot that it burned the roof of my mouth and throat. I like my food hot but this was ridiculous. It was boiling ! When I spoke to the manager she basically stuck up for her staff when clearly they have some service/ communication issues. I will not return. Used to be a great place but has totally gone down hill.

Mmmm Tapenade.... Never had a bad meal.... <br/>the Olive Tapenade flat bread is THE BEST

Love the house fries.Love the fair prices!!!

So disappointed. I did not know this place had changed hands, but as soon as I saw the menu and prices I asked, and was told yes.<br/>Well let me tell you I used to go at least once a month. Think I have been 3 times in the last year. Food is Not what it used to be, in fact one day I complained bitterly about my "mexican" lunch, it was terrible, tried to make eye contact with the fellow at the next table who was ordering the same as I had had, no luck, hope his was better. I had explained to the waitress how it could be improved! Last time my daughter and I were there the waitress was not waitressing us! I usually am very generous with tips, over the top some people say, well let me tell you this girl did not get much, in fact should not have had any. Lost my gloves there, was told no sign of them!! where else would they be? so think it may be a long time before I venture in again, sorry 5th Street You Were Great and I was proud you were my neighbourhood pub and eating place
Julia
We have been long time customers (6yrs) as we live in the neighbourhood. Seriously disappointed with change in ownership. Portion sizes are smaller. Good items removed. The burgers now look pre-bought. They are perfectly round and super thin. They used to be juicy and drip on your hands. Now they are dry and no better than cheap fast food. The prices have increased and quality decreased. Seriously disappointed as it used to be a good local hangout.
Eruditefox
Way Too Slow. Twice in the past month, I've nearly passed out from hunger while waiting for my order at Fifth Street (it takes nearly an hour). Food is mediocre and too expensive. Won't be going back. I'll go to the Fernwood Inn instead: at Fernwood, they serve good food within 15 minutes--even when they're slammed at peak times.
Luvmeggie
Once a gem, now a disaster.. I used to frequent here before the new ownership came in. The House Beer was the best! The prices were great and the portions were great. <br/><br/>Then suddenly the house beer was changed, it's now awful. Then the menu changed drastically - they removed EVERYTHING I liked. <br/><br/>The prices are higher, the portions smaller, the quality has suffered, and the great service I used to get has left, too. <br/><br/>I went tonight to give it another chance, what a waste of time and money.<br/>The server put the leftover soup in the same box as the leftover chicken pot pie... umm... why? Especially when there was maybe a couple spoonfuls of the soup left.
Merasheen
Service is not what it used to be. I find that this place has gone way down hill in service and smile. I just called to reserve a seat for 5 and was told they only do it for six. I said make it six and I will invite someone else and the server Sonya brushed me off. I used to love this place but now I will take my business elsewhere. Let them know by walking like I am
Chris
What a disappointment. Terrible food. Bad service. No entertainment other than to screens. I've given this place too many chances because I live nearby. No more. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else.
B Thug
This used to be a good restaurant! Not anymore! I have never had such horrible service. The waitress took 15 mins to even ask what I wanted to drink and then it took 10 mins to get the drink. The food was ok but not worth what we paid. I will not go back.
Totos
Huge disappointment. The food used to be good here -what's happened?? Of three meals, all were terrible. The chicken pot pie had potatoes, but it was one big potato cut in half. The prawn and lemon pepper fettuccine was tasteless and swimming in a mess of oil. The chicken fettuccine was also tasteless, the sauce was thin and runny and the chicken looked uncooked. Our waiter was excellent but even he looked a little forlorn serving such poor food. We won't be back.
Sherry
The service was poor probably due to understaffing. The server was very unattentive. My food was not great. I had a chicken burger that was soaked in honey mustard and topped with a spicy coleslaw. I know I should of complained but I really feel she would not care. I will not be going back.
Emily Fitzcanti
Okay, but used to be better. Went for lunch - first time in years at Fifth Street - and noticed prices are no longer the $5/$10/$15. Not a big deal, I just always thought it was a good idea and everyone I know loved that about the place. <br/><br/>The hot chicken sandwich (open-faced) with fries was not as amazing as I remembered but it was pretty good and I may have built it up in my head over the years. The warm almond chicken salad though was a letdown. The menu description sounded great but it was really boring and I wouldn’t bother having it again.
Savvy Eater
Wow I didn't believe it until I tried it myself, the quality of food at this place has gone down hill since the new ownership!! Why would u change a good thing? Had the rotisserie chicken, Swiss chalet comparable. You call some string beans and corn ends Vegetables? My dinner guests had the entree salads. Skimpy to say the least. What a joke, get it together people. Consult the previous owners as to what gave them the reputation as one of the best places in town. Its called quality food, one thing this place now lacks.
Saralstin
A wonderful atmosphere, great service and incredible food. Simply wonderful, would eat here again and again.

Food was way better a few years ago ! Quality on a steady decline. I opted for the side of roasted vegetables for 2.99 with my chicken because all the meal came with was potatoes. I was a bit annoyed I had to pay for veg when a properly plated meal should come with. I was even more annoyed when all I got was 4 pieces of grease soaked red pepper. I refused to pay 2.99 for my veg side .
Chef Girl
It was better before the menu changed. The food is declining. I gave it a few chances after the menu change and now I won't be going back
Wineandfood
Miss the old quality!. We used to love 5th Street but this may have been our last visit for a bit. Our bbq chicken pizza hardly had anything on it and the small red wine glass was 1/2 full. I used to love the satay chicken and salad - still had good flavour but much smaller and I had to ask for extra peanut sauce. Miss the old menu, even if they raised the prices... make it $6/12/18 meals! Also took a long time to get our food and it wasn't even that busy. Our server was lovely and polite though : )

After craving the chicken and banana pepper wood fired pizza for weeks I finally went in to pick one up tonight !! Drove 5 mins home to open the box with hungry anticipation to find a sad soggy pie. :(. Soooo disappointed. <br/>The outside crust was perfect but the rest of it was wet ... Maybe time to another log on the fire ??? <br/>It's in the oven now to see if it's redeemable <br/>Disappointed.<br/><br/><br/>-----06 Feb, 2014-----<br/><br/>Unexpectedly back for dinner 2nd night in a row. <br/>Different sever but same greys service - friendly, informative and attentive <br/>Had the BBQ chicken pizza - delicious. My friend and the pesto mushroom goat cheese pizza and we both thought it had too much pesto in it. <br/>Was underwhelmed by desert selection - only 1 thing without chocolate and that was a sorbet - better in summer than on cold night. My friend enjoyed the creme brûlée , but I prefer the one at Stage. <br/>Would love chef to consider adding a Thai chicken pizza to menu using their awesome peanut sauce ... <br/><br/><br/>-----05 Feb, 2014-----<br/><br/>Great service and 5 satisfied diners tonight. Shepherds pie was perfection and better than my mums home made !<br/><br/><br/>-----10 Jul, 2013-----<br/><br/>Goof was good tonight yet waiter was lacking in basic skills. Waited a really long time for salads. When complimented the salad the waiter said yeah this one is hit or miss ! Oh my.

Just GREAT!. Great atmosphere, great service, great food, great prices for what you're being served. We will become regulars, I'm sure of it.

Margec. Visited the 5th St with my grandkids, and the food was great, service good. No complaints. The chicken was very tender and tasty. The décor warm and inviting. Would definitely go back there. The kids loved it too....
Cory
Buffalo burger. Best in the city period!
Yummmmmy
I used to love going here. I don't know if management changed but I know the menu and the prices sure have. I loved the old menu with the $5, $10, $15 choices. Now sure I will be a regular anymore.
Fablesandfortunes
The chicken is pretty yummy!. This is a nice neighbourhood restaurant, with a pup style bar in a separate side plus a nice outdoor seating area which is great on a hot summers night! The food has so far always been good, but we miss the old menu! My only complaint would be the service can be spotty and our last visit we had a total of 6 servers serve for our table of 2. Otherwise a fun and tasty place to eat!
Lauren
Change in Ownership. My boyfriend and I used to go to 5th street at least once a week because of the amazing prices and food. The last time we went a few months ago we were so disappointed with the change in pricing structure that we walked out and haven't been back. The different price levels of the menu is what made 5th street and when that changed it just became another bar in Victoria. I understand having to raise prices but everything was much more expensive on top of the big change. My favourite, the west coast albacore tuna went from being 6.50 to 9. A 30% increase in prices is just not ok. As for the food, I can't vouch for it recently but it used to be so delicious. All in all 5th street: listen to everyones feedback and bring back the different price menus. Even if that means having a $6,$12, ect. menu.
To Dine Or Not To Dine
Don't Miss This!!. I am honestly surprised at the number of recent negative reviews of this place. My extended family and I (eleven of us) visited this restaurant on a Thursday evening for dinner. 5th Street Bar and Wood Fired Grill has a pub-like feel to it and is quite large with seating branching out in all directions around the central hub cooking area and rotisserie. Larger groups such as ours are taken to an outdoor patio area with propane heaters and a central brick gas fireplace, open on four sides. The patio area has a distinct mediterranean look and gorgeous ambience with candles on the tables, plants around the permeter, and overhead mini-lamp llighting. <br/><br/>Upon arrival we were greeted immediately, and even though I was 20 mins early for our reservation, we were seated right away. Most of the restaurant was busy, with the Canucks game being the focal point for half the place. Conversely, the patio area was quite and cosy. Our server, Jess, was nothing short of amazing. A true professional. She had our drink orders out to us within minutes, and was very patient and friendly with the older ones in our group who were hard of hearing. She even brought out a sample of beer for one of us, who was undecided.<br/><br/>Our group shared an order of the Baked Flatbread with olive tapenade ($6) to start. This came spread out on a flat bread the size of a 10" pizza! Absolutely delicious. Even some of us that don't like olives, were amazed. <br/><br/>For a main, I chose a Prawn and Lemon Pepper Fettucine ($16) and a glass of their Italian Mezzomondo Negroamaro red wine. The deep dark purple wine with the long name was quite good - not overly dry, but with a full body and notes of plum and cherry. Great value at $5.75 per glass or $17 for a 1/2 litre. This generous sized dish came with a small garlic toast on the side. The prawns and pasta were mixed with cut articokes and sun-dried tomatoes in a savory garlic cream sauce, which ranks right up there as top contender for me personally. I split this entree with my daughter, and in turn I enjoyed half of her BBQ buffalo burger with cheddar and bacon. The burger was very lean and at least 1" thick with a hardy sesame seed bun. I definitely recommend trying this buffalo burger for yourself. Really great BBQ smokey taste to it. <br/><br/>As this was a birthday celebration, we brought in an ice cream cake for dessert. The staff were great about storing this in their freezer until needed. At the end, Jess provided candles (which I forgot) and brought the cake out right on queue, along with plates and a large cutting knife in a cannister with hot water.<br/><br/>I left feeling full and content, after a yummy meal. The service that Jess provided to us was top notch! Thank you for a relaxing dining experience.<br/> We will definitely be back (again and again).

We used to frequent 5th street very regularly but now we have a young child and don't get out as much as we used to. This past weekend my parents were down for dinner and we went out. We decided to go to an old favorite. We heard the menu had changed which is always scary but we were very impressed! It took us forever to decide because everything looked delicious!! We were super satisfied with the food! All four meals were exceptional and the service was great!! New owners or menu... whatever changed it tastes as good as ever!!

Great Food, Great Service. After reading the reviews on here I was honestly expecting the worst. We were just looking for a casual dining experience, you know a pitcher of beer and a dinner. the service was awesome! and the food was really good. <br/>We will be going back again.

Good pizza but it gets cold fast. Excellent crust but they need to serve on hot plates because these lightly-topped pizzas get cold very fast.

Do I Like It... or Do I Not?. I have had two completely polar experiences here, which keep me from clicking like or dislike. That's a good thing... or is it?<br/><br/>The first time I went, I fell in love with the place. I was there with a large group, and was captivated by the atmosphere the place has at night. An incredibly hard-working and friendly server, a fantastic mix of both pub grub and more high-end dining, a great drink selection, and a very fun aura. I particularly enjoyed the outside wing and the open kitchen-type concept: I was hooked.<br/><br/>In fact, I was so hooked, I lobbied and lobbied and lobbied some more to take a guest. Finally, we both found the time, and stopped by earlier in the afternoon, right before supper, to prevent being stuck in what I thought might be a huge rush. The packed house was not there, which is fair enough, but neither was the service nor the feeling. If this were any other restaurant, one in which I held out less faith, we never even would have stayed. 13 minutes we waited just to be seated, with no more than 3 occupied tables in the entire restaurant, but I insisted we wait. As it turns out (I hope), there was only server working. Not a good decision.<br/><br/>The aura was also gone. We were listening to the radio, sitting in a corner that was oddly lighted with a candle on the table that apparently was not worthy of being lit until we left, in preparation for that night-time feel. Food was average, and nothing like I remembered. My pizza had entire cloves of garlic on it. Never eaten a meal where whole garlic cloves were used as toppings. I wanted my memory back...<br/><br/>The best I can say is try this place at night, because during the day... I just don't know what it is trying to be.

New ownership dan news for 5th St. I have been living in the area for over 5 years and frequented the 5th st on a regular occasion however since new ownership its really went down hill food quality is very poor, out of date food and a jump in prices has both put locals off from visiting.<br/>First meal there after the ownership we ordered a pizza and they used to do lovely ham and bacon on this now they put pork luncheon meat from a tin :-( don't know who the chef is but he should be removed.<br/><br/>Service is now very slow and very poor if you have a choice move on this place its overpriced and poor quality food.

New Ownership/prices/menu. I used to be a 5th street regular, but in the last 6 months or so, it has taken a drastic turn for the worse. They changed the menu and got rid of the $5/$10/$15 style that we used to love. In the process they have increased prices probably about 25% and have decreased the portion sizes probably about 25%. The buffalo Burger used to be a favorite but it looks like it has shrunk in size. they have also changed the beer selection. I think they should be listening to their regular customers before it is too late, I would hate to lose the neighborhood pub but I have no desire to visit there anymore. Perhaps they have changed ownership which may explain the turn for the worse.
The Thirsty Traveller
A lunch lacking. I have been a long time patron of the 5th Street and really feel the place has gone down hill in the past couple of years. I have seen a couple of people try and justify the price increase as not being able to make money with $5 appies and $10 entries. I'm sorry but I have to strongly disagree. The people ordering the $5 appies were most likely ordering pitchers of beer. The food has always been pretty good but I don't feel a 30% price increase with a reduction in the food portion was in order. The presentation was very nice but at the end of day this is a neighborhood pub not a fine dinning experience and the prices should reflect that. The best value are the drinks. They offer a great selection of drinks at very reasonable prices. I would have to say above all else my biggest complaint today was the lack of service. We never received water. We asked for a drink menu and then waited 10 minutes for the waiter to come back and take our order. My wife also received the wrong type of salad with her entree order. Overall I found the bad service is the reason I might not return.

Waited 90ins for our food

Awesome lunch. Great vanilla latte.

Tried this restaurant out recently and found the food was fairly good considering it's so reasonably priced but the service was extremely slow. I've been a server for 7+ years now and understand how it all works. Our waitress was friendly and attentive but our food took a long time to come out. The table next to us had their order taken just after ours and ordered similar items but by the time we got our main food that table next to us were paying for their dinner and about to leave. We were reassured that our food was about to come up many times but clearly that was inaccurate. I can only assume they either forgot our order or made a mistake. I may go again but it would be nice if the service improved. Having read the other comments it would seem that it's a re-occurring issue which makes restaurants look really bad.

Great food, good atmosphere. The food is good, and the atmosphere is nice. If you go there in the winter stay as far away from the front enterance as possible as the draft can be very cold. Also, they don't have heated bathrooms - it's freezing in there!! It's been like that for years - not sure if the owners are just cheap or what.
Anita
Excellant. This place has the best food that a pub can serve. Its gourmet food at a pub price. I love it here. Not a big fan of the draft as I had three and felt it was maybe watered down. ...I will get bottles next time as the service and food is great.

Get the friiiies. I used to frequent this place when I lived in the area, but hadn't been for a few years when a friend suggested it the other day. A few of my favorite menu items have disappeared, but I decided to try the tuna. It was NOT good. Tiny piece of fish, swimming (heh) in sauce, seriously. My friend just got a plate of fries (we were mostly there for drinks) though, and they are always good. You get this giant plate of them covered in parm for like $5. Also our drinks were good, and the service was good too.<br/><br/>I would return, I would just never get the tuna again, ever.
B. Smith
I will never return after the extremely slow service, does the waitress not want a tip or what?
Rajiv Khaneja
Very Very Slow Servic. Painfully slow service in a almost empty restaurant. When asked about the wait we were given a lecture about how everything was prepared "fresh" unlike most other restaurants. I could have raised, slaughtered, and butchered the cow and then made my burger in the amount of time it took.
Eatsout
Fantastic!!!. Awsome buffalo burger!!!
Kburstall
A flawed masterpiece.. If I owed the place there'd be a wall or two to keep it from sounding like a jet engine, and a kitchen that could prepare your food in under an hour. But my wife keeps suggesting it, and I keep reluctantly going. I swear I've probably lost more hearing here than a combined lifetime total of rock concerts, and I rock pretty damn hard. GO WHEN IT'S NOT BUSY (pro tip: almost never) and you'll love the place though.
Afrocomb
This place is so good. Definitely try the Buffalo Burger
Andrea Lee
Worst food in a long time. Roasted chicken was so over salted I could barely eat it. Charged me 2.50 for a quarted piece of corn and two slices of carrot. Mac and Cheese was dry and gummy. Absolutely disgusting. Have had better food at a food court. Will never be going back.
FeedMe
Nice place, great food!. I've been here a lot of times and it was always hit or miss with me, but today it was so good! The prices have gone up a little, but that's fine, it can't always be the same. It's still pretty cheap. I remember food always came out slow here, but it was pretty quick this time and our waitress was prompt and friendly. Try the chicken wings, pizza, burgers, and the appies in general are good. I'm not a fan of the rotisserie chicken, it's too dry for me. My fish tacos today (feature) were delicious!

Horrible service took over 45 min to get a burger. Server told us they were plateing it then it finally came 10 min later

Silence from all the happy people. It confuses me that 80% of people say they like this restaurant, and it is number 11 on here, yet there are so many negative reviews? I think the new owner seems to be doing some things right. The bar looks great with its new coat of paint, the patio looks great now that the outdated falling apart furniture is gone, the feature appy beef ribs that I had the pleasure of trying last week were AMAZING. I've heard from numerous people that the old head chef needed to go for a lot of reasons, and the quality of the feature I just had leads me to agree with them. Minimum wage went up, food costs went up, there are a large number of reasons to increase prices, especially for an old favorite like this which has only increased prices ONCE in the whole time they have been open. And considering HST is thankfully leaving us soon, this price increase really doesnt seem to be a problem for me, especially considering the food quality is still exceptional. My server was friendly and fast to come over to us too. Our food did take a little bit, but I am more than happy to wait for great food. And chocolate porter on tap? Im in

Went here for a birthday party last month and had heard great things. This place must be running on the fumes of the past. Service was below average and my rib dinner was harder to chew then a baseball glove. I wont be going back.

I have been coming here for the last 10 years, the worst thing about this place is the new owner/manager. At first I thought we had witnessed him on a bad day but now I realize that is just the way he is; strait up rude. He is rude to his staff and customers, rude to the people that should matter to him most. Too bad cause this place has a good thing going for them. Good food at decent prices and pretty cheap drinks. I will not be going back until he is gone.

5th St was always one of our go to restaurants but since the ownership changed I have noticed the portions are slightly smaller and they changed the pita bread (served w/ hummus) it is now cracker hard and tastes stale. Also i just notived they don't have a change table available in any of the washerwoman. Hopefully the kinks will be worked out once the staff get used to the changes.

Great place, but something has changed.... We've been loyal 5th Streeters for 4 years now, keep coming back again and again. Went back again a few days ago and had their Summer Greens salad, the seafood risotto, and the crab dip. All dishes were excellent, and I mean that with heavy emphasis, they are top notch with a melody of flavours woven together that far exceeded the price. However, as I said in my title, "something has changed" -- the service has slipped, noticeably. What's even more odd is that the service changed even though our waitress was one we are very familiar with, and who in the past has been able to deliver sterling service. I asked a few questions about current ownership/management, part way through our meal, and she said that the head chef has left, with those who were working under him taking over. She said that it has allowed them to try some new ideas and updates with the menu, which is interesting (I did note that they have abandoned the "$5.50, $10.50, $150 system they used to employ, making the menu now look a bit less easy to take in at a glance). <br/><br/>They've done an excellent job of maintaining the high culinary standard set by the original chef, to this I can attest, but I can only surmise that it takes them a lot longer to produce the same product, hence leading to us waiting way longer than we used to for items to arrive. Perhaps the original chef was the team leader who kept them hopping in the past? Someone needs to step in and fill that role, if that's the case. I'm ok with food arriving in waves, but the pause between each of the 3 dishes we ordered was so long that our plates were sitting empty for a longer than we've ever had them do before the next arrived, and I had time to finish both my beer and my water and have a prolonged conversation with my date. The Summer Greens wasn't a "cooked" item and should have been quite quick to cobble together, but it was a long time arriving as the first item. The crab dip arrived, and I loved it, but the serving of bread was tiny with it, and we needed more because the dip was so wonderfully rich that it begged for the smoothing effect of bread. I had to get up and hunt down the waitress to get more bread, kind of disturbing the flow of our dinner. We finished the dip, then hoped for the next course which didn't come for a long time. Finally the seafood risotto arrived and was heartily enjoyed as well, worth the $18.95 price had it come earlier.<br/><br/>Perhaps I would have loved to have been able to sample our three dishes with a bit of overlap the way it used to happen, so that I could enjoy going from one flavour to the next, but I accepted that fine food takes time to prepare, so I was willing to wait, within limits, and unfortunately our limit was exceeded enough to give me pause to wonder what's up with 5th Street lately. We have always had this opportunity in the past at 5th Street. However, something has changed there, and coupled with an increase in prices, it would bode well for management to tweak delivery times to reflect the fine service we used to have there.. This would go a long way to retaining customer loyalty and guarantee that new customers return again and again. There are basically three elements to the dining experience: Ambiance/atmosphere, food, and service. All three should be monitored by ownership/management constantly. I feel as if the last element, service, has been allowed to slip. Please, 5th Street, don't lose your edge: nearly every day tourists I serve as a tour bus driver ask me where to eat, and I send them to 5th telling them it's worth the taxi fare from downtown to go here and dine. I want to be able to tell them that service and product are top notch, ok? Don't be letting me down!

Good food, service needs work. First of all let me say that this place had a lot going for it, Great atmosphere, very good food.. try the buffalo burger and even the menu had lots to choose from and especially the prices were great.. I liked everything about this place except for one.. but this one problem was so detrimental as to offset all the good things about this place. It seems to me they make up their money in lack of serving staff. We arrived at exact;y 8pm. We were seated right away because we had reservations as was recommended on a Saturday night.. At the 10 min mark we were finally asked for our drink orders and we took the hint and ordered our meal at the same time. It took at least another 10 minutes for our 1st drink to arrive. just before our meals did Time from sit down to meal was 40 mins. Now normally I have three drinks per meal, but this time barely got in two drinks. Now there's lost revenue, Not that our poor server was taking a break. he was working his ass off.. Seems to me this place needs more serving staff. It's ruinng your reputation. A hint, I saw idle kitchen staff. maybe get the idle staff to run the food when they can to help out the servers

Went for a last minute dinner before a hockey game. Super busy, tons of families and crazy loud. Our server man looked like he just bench pressed a car, but all the servers looked like guys straight out of jersey shore. The food was pretty good, but the prices have gone up again, which was part of the appeal of this place - now its no different than any other overpriced, mediocre pub/restaurant in Victoria. Except with buff waiters.
Mary
This place has the best buffalo burgers in town! The 'house fries' with parmesan cheese are amazing as well, and they have Merridale cider on tap. The pizza is pretty mediocre (go to Prima Strada instead) and the place gets pretty packed and loud, but for the most part the food is great.
Ramsey-Esq
Mediocre food. Wont go back. price is fine service is fine but the food Is typical of many eateries I Vic. Too much sauce, overlooked pork, messy and sloppy foo at best.
Marianne
GREAT MENU. They have a very innovative idea for their menu...$10.50, $15.50 and $20.50...ALL categories have awesome food choices..portions are very satisfying...and the fact that they are ALWAYS busy speaks volumes to the awesome service and value...same menu is available in the bar also...only downfall is the parking, i feel it is not sufficient for the restaurant
Leonandmocha
Always great service and great food. They have a cheap lunch menu with a lot of options to choose from. Probably one of my favourite places in Victoria. Turkey medallions!!
SweetSaltySavory
Really great food. Prawn and lemon pepper pasta is absolutly to die for!
Jo Rogan
Really good food! Great service, awesome beer specials, we had 2 appies, 2 entrees, 3 drinks , for 50! Can't complain at all and the menu is priced for anyone to have a great time with whatever change you can get together

Great goto for lunch. Been to 5th street (pub side) for lunch several times, it's a good place to hit up if you are out and about and need something to fill you up.<br/>Good variety, out of the ordinary menu items (Great pork sandwich). Have had a few minor misses, chicken quesadilla with minimal chicken but no deal breakers.<br/>Good food, friendly service, great value, cheap booze!
Bang4Buck
They've got its figured out.... They've got it figured out. Great servers. Really good food. Tasty beer. What sounds like an easy formula must be harder in real life. We had the prime rib special on a Friday night in a noisy, raunchy, just what a pub should be like on a Friday night kinda place. <br/>Laughing, drinking,...damn, I could hardly hear the hockey game playing on the big screen. <br/>Perfect.
Fooddreamer
Loud but good. I find this place too loud on the restaurant side but the food is always good.
Ratched
Reasonable prices, quality food, great beer.. Great beers on tap! Reasonable prices! One of the better burgers in town! Definitely worth going!
Sleepingbag
Good food, good prices, bad service.. 5th Street's food is good and well-priced, I'll give them that. Their service, on the other hand, is no good. I have been there about 10 times in the last year. Occasionally with a friend but most of the time with my family. I've never made a reservation to dine in because I look at it as more of a neighborhood eatery and less of a formal dine-in. I never mind waiting for seating but I do mind the hostess being rude and unwelcoming.<br/><br/>Service is always lacking. Drink re-fills? Rarely. I'd say 75% of the times I've been there, the waitress will drop off the food, come back a minute after to check if everything is okay, and then proceed to disappear for the rest of the meal, only to arrive once everyone has finished and then ask if we'd like re-fills.<br/><br/>To be fair, the waitresses/waiters seem to be nice and pleasant but it's difficult to give a full evaluation as you don't see much of them while at the restaurant.
Marcus
Great Burger. My girlfriend and I just moved here from Regina and our other Saskatchewan friends going to school here recommended the place. We tried it out on a Tuesday thinking it wouldn't be very busy and to our pleasant surprise it was, which gave us an idea on what to expect with the food. We weren't disappointed. I had the bison burger and was blown away by the perfect melt-in-your-mouth texture, the flavours worked perfectly and all in all an enjoyable experience.
I-love-food
This place is hip and cool. I had a great time at 5th street. The service is always amazing and I am always impressed as they are so busy! <br/><br/>One of my favorite parts about this restaurant is the layout of the menu. They have cleverly sectioned off the food by price points for example there is a $5 section a $10 section and so on. I think it is a really creative way to arrange a menu. This place has a neat atmosphere with when you arrive you have the choice to go into the restaurant side or into the lounge side, they also have a really nice patio and I love the chunky woodwork that is throughout the whole restaurant.<br/><br/>They have a variety of beers on tap and in the bottle and a great cocktail list as well, I love the cesar variations that they have come up with on their cocktail menu one even has a chicken wing in it! (a must have!)<br/><br/>Some of my food favorites from this place (Of which I totally recommend) would be: the quesadilla, the buffalo burger and the cocoanut prawns. I will let you know more recommendations when I order something new from there! <br/><br/>I have not had a food item here that I have not enjoyed and I am excited to go back again.
HonestFoodie
Quality and consistency have degraded over the years. The restaurant seems regularly under staffed and the pub fare is a far cry from what it was years back, but at over twice the price since ~2008. My last meal was a pulled pork sandwich -- deemed second best in town after Pig by the server, but that was hardly the case with the messy presentation and overly fatty runoff that dropped out of the sandwich. My full side of fries came with dip that hadn't seen a fridge in quite a while and was left untouched. If competition in the immediate vicinity opened up 5th Street would need to shape up pretty fast to stay in business.
Cdtraveller
Good pub food in the bar, would not eat in the restaurant again. Foods better if I have a few drinks. Not high end.
CanadianFoodie
Everything makes sense.. They totally are getting it right here. This is what Pub food is all about. Well executed and at a good price.

Very affordable. Love taking our family here,<br/>There prices havent changed for years.<br/>Broad selection of food to please every one...<br/>Buffalo burger is to die for

Great food and prices, variable service. We have been coming to this restaurant since it opened. I love, love the menu and still can't believe the prices are so low. So we keep coming back. I have to echo the majority sentiment here however and comment on the bad service. Maybe it goes hand in hand with the cheap prices. Sometimes we visit the bar after soccer with team mates and the service there has always been prompt, friendly and efficient. The same can't be said for the dining room although it is very variable. Lunch service is usually very good. But at night? On the patio? Make sure you have lots and lots of time and aren't hungry or thirsty. One night our family sat out on the heated patio and waited forever for service. Oh - the server thought we were part of the previous party and had already finished eating! Come on! The patio is the worst place to sit first it is either too cold or too hot. You are too far from the action - your server can disappear and not reappear for ages. Again, I still think this restaurant is worth visiting for the menu, quality of food and prices but surely they could do something about the service!
Dine'N'Dash
4 dollar pints and bison burgers figure it out.

Kinda slow service, but worth the wait

Quality local food. I have been to 5th St grill dozens of times, and almost always sit on the bar side. The prices are very reasonable (although recent menu downgrades were disappointing), and the food is consistently excellent. The servers are decent to good, and almost always friendly.<br/><br/>I highly recommend the tuna burger and buffalo burger, both one-of-a-kind classics!
