Review Sam's Deli - Victoria

Alison -
Love Sam's! I go often for my lunch break. Staff is so friendly and nice. Even to the point I know quite a few of their names! They got to deal with a lot of tough customers every day, you can see their hustle! I was sad when my favourite Montreal smoked meat sandwich went off the menu, but I have other favourites like the clam chowder and their pacific bagel and breakfast sandwiches. Clam chowder is super meaty and delicious! Shout out to Naomi! She's awesome!

I visit Sam's nearly every weekday for my BLT. It is an amazing breakfast sandwhich. They have many options for breakfast and lunch. The staff are always extremely friendly and efficient, they have even begun to remember my order. I love this shop. Thank you for the great food.

Great sanduiches and delicious Cobb salad! Price is pretty good too!

Great place to drop into to grab an absolutely loaded sandwich. Corn chowder is without peer. Outdoor seating to people watch. Good beer and wine for a break after some event downtown while above the madding crowd.

Excellent sandwiches, so big too, I need a bigger mouth to eat them! Shrimp and avocado is top. Mochas are pretty good too. Always so busy and crowded but I have to come here every time I'm in Victoria.

Often stop here for lunch sammies while walking around downtown. Prices are meh but the avocado sandwich we get (vegan style) is a very good option for quick vegan bites. They have ciders/beers here too, making patio eating and people watching very enjoyable.

They advertise unique hotdogs, which I did try...a footlong with cheese and bacon. It wasn't 'healthy' but it was good. A little expensive for a hot dog. Sat by the window which had a great view of the harbor.

Open early, even on Sundays which is perfect for the TC 10k. Also has almond milk for lattes! Lots of salad choices. I only wish there were more gluten-free options for baked goods.

great place for very big delicious sandwiches , so most people have to share these sandwiches , but for me I can eat an entire sandwich to myself. I wish I had time to go to Victoria and get these sandwiches everyday .

Very nice and warm atmosphere, good food at a fair price, could get backed up if lots if people arrive at the same time but staff work quick to move people through.

Great sandwiches and the best soup. Well run business with excellent staff. Worthwhile dropping by for a feed.

Delicious Food. Great View of the harbour. Fast internet for working on my laptop. Casual and cozy environment.

I use to enjoy taking my daughter to this place. I've been coming here for years, but now it sucks. The sandwich are meager and the staff are hard to understand.

Friendly staff. I had a 12oz Mocha. Great prices. I also had an incredible Raspberry Streusel and a Blueberry Crumble. Great location on Government St.

Incredible clam chowder! Shrimp sandwich was good but not great! Just a bit bland, although the turkey club looked amazing. Not the cheapest eats around, but decent food never is. Ill be back!

Over priced, poor quality, and the absolutely the worst coffee I have ever paid for. The Burger King across the street would be a step up.

UP - Fresh and flavourful with friendly staff.

DOWN - Prices were alright, but I felt the sandwich was a little light.

OUT - I was playing pinball next door at the hotdog place when I got hungry. Gourmet or not, my street-meat days are over so I went next door to Sam's. Beef dip was on special along with soup. Both the soup and sandwich were great but very light. It went down quick and I was still hungry when I left.

Sandwich on a croissant was delicious. Staff were friendly and helpful. Regarding the comments that their sandwiches are 'overpriced', may I ask where you can get a FRESH sandwich for less...heck, McD's is priced about the same for the same size of sandwich, especially in the heart of Victoria. I enjoyed it, if back in town would definitely go back.

Tourist Trap complete with BAD food!. This place caters specifically to tourists, that is clear. Terrible food is okay when you have a turn-over cliental. However, tourists, please come try some of the great cuisine our city has to offer! Don't get caught in the trap! The food here is lousy, but there is always a long line-up in the summer. However, this is not the case during the off season, as many locals like myself only go here as a last resort. After today's lousy sandwich experience, I will stop going here, the food has gotten so bad, that I can't stomache it. The salads sit for days, looking limp and wilted, the last two times my croissant has been old and dry. There is nothing especially interesting about their menu, just the standard sandwiches and soup. While the staff is friendly, for some reason this place attracts a rude and pushy cliental. Maybe it's the cheap, generic food? It is a step up from Subway though!

Still Good but, Remember when.... Is it a famous sandwich if the recipe has changed? Remember when the shrimp sandwiches actually used to be the best in town? This is going back 15 years ago, but they used a heap of sprouts not cheap iceberg lettuce like they do now, two ice cream scoops of shrimp, and a half of a large avocado scooped out onto the sandwich with whatever else you wanted on it. Those were the days! Stick with the soup.

So overpriced. First of all, I'm not saying the food was bad. It was fine. Mediocre. But definitely not worth $10 for a regular bread-sized sandwich. It's a sandwich! I thought this type of food was supposed to be affordable. I get that the location makes it a tourist-trap but it should still be done reasonably. If they're going to charge that much they should at least include a side of something and a drink to make it a meal. I've been wanting to go try this place out for the longest time and I was very disappointed. Definitely won't be coming back to eat there... unless it's for the ice cream at the Soda Shoppe next door!

Didn't know where to go for a relaxing lunch so stopped in several delis and sandwich shops to check menus and prices. All were pricey. This one looked nice so we thought, why not. So glad we did. The chili was fantastic and the tuxedo cake was even better. Stopped by there twice more in the next few days fora lunch. Pricey but good. Relaxing atmosphere and quiet.(late October).

Too pricey for what I got. Ordered Montreal (hoy) smoked meat sandwich. Was 7.90 for just the sandwich on a normal size slice of bread. If I wanted a soup add another 4 bucks. I'll stick to subway. I haven't tried the Italian deli on blanshard or delicadoes yet to compare "home made" but was dissapointed here. Their deal of the day for a sandwich and soup was a good deal at 9.50 should have went for that.

So/so. Food is OK but no longer spectacular the breakfast sandwich is identical to what I could get at Tim Hortons for cheaper. Service is awful. I was ignored when someone else showed up they tried to serve them first rather than politely ask who was first.

Good Deli Food. Good lunchtime fare. A little pricey, but I suppose thats what you get when you are in the heart of Victoria right down the street from the Empress.
Had their Beef Dip to go, and it was pretty good. I loved the crusty bun they used for the sandwich.
Got my order to go, so didn't get to enjoy the ambiance of the restuarant, but it seemed nice.
I might go back, but it would be nicer if they had some lower price options.
Big Belly
This place serves really good clam chowder. The shepherd's pie is not that great-way too much mashed potato. If you just want a good bowl of clam chowder, go there!

Meh ...... An $8 smoked meat sandwich with meager portions of meat ... mostly shredded lettuce.
I watched as individual shrimp pieces were taken _off_ a shrimp sandwich.
Slow service, catering almost entirely to tourists now and not the downtown regulars on lunch break.
I won't be back.

They've fallen off their pedestal. Sadly, I am demoting Sam's from one of my favorites to merely "likes it" (and that is almost too good). We have been going to this Victoria landmark since 1978 and they just ain't what they used to be. The lines are still there and the menu has not changed, but the quality of the service and food are just mediocre. I may not be giving Sam' s the dreaded "doesn't like it" rating but I am also not giving them my patronage any more.

The food has changed, the service isn't great... Its kinda turned into a cheap diner. I don't think ill be going back. I am sure there are other great Sandwich shops in Victoria.

Disappointing Deli?. Stopped at Sams Deli yesterday craving one of their Mile high smoked meat sandwiches.
Times have sure changed, have they been bought/ sold? re -jigged?
Something is off.
The smoked meat was more softish, fatty, and closer to poached corned beef than anything-else.
With judicious attention to the scale ( piece by painful piece) the young carver made sure we got the very minimum filling for our sandwiches.
My dining partner suggested later that we return the big fatty bits and have it weighed for a refund!
Very dissappointing, will look elsewhere for a great sandwich.

Fast service, yummy and economical - two thumbs up!

Another Victoria landmark, smack dab in tourist-town, that has been there too long and has long been complaicent - in my opinion - the food isn't bad, it's just average

A great sandwich and cold beer. I can't ask for much more from a deli. The shrimp and avocado sandwich was just the thing on a warm summer day.

It is a great place to stop in for lunch. It has amazing ice cream. Under great managemant.

It is a decent place and I did enjoy it. I just wish it was cheaper.

Overpriced and over-rated...So.. a full ham sandwich is $7.50.. ok.. plus a dollar more for two slices of Havarti cheese = $8.50, plus another 75 cents for a “whole dill pickle” on the side of our order – that seems a bit pricy, but if these really are ‘famous’ ‘extraordinary’ sandwiches.. ok…
But they weren’t.

I ordered a proper meal, a shrimp sandwich complimented with cucumbers ($8.95) on a croissant bun (50 cents extra). And oh boy… that has to be the largest and freshest croissant I’ve ever had. It was soft and wonderfully light. The crisp shell made for a good contrast to the meatier shrimp and mild avocado–my taste buds were doing the Spanish Fandango. While I didn’t find the shrimp to be superb, they were certainly fresh, just like that croissant. That was the highlight.
