Review Spoons Diner - Victoria

Dimitri Tzotzos
Brunch on New Year's Day was fantastic. 3 of us got there at 11:55, and had to wait about 30min in line, but the hostess kept checking on everyone, and the long line kept moving. It was worth the wait. My chicken/waffle/poutine/Benny was amazing. Everything tasted great. Staff were all friendly and helpful. Coffee refills were always hot. Will definitely go back.

I found this hidden gem which is just a hop, skip and a jump away from my place. Not sure why I haven’t noticed it or heard about it until now. Ordered their standard breakfast and upgraded to the waffles. Everything was of decent quality, especially the waffles. Better than other breakfast establishments in Victoria and they didn’t overcook my eggs like Jam and The Ruby. Outstanding price value as well. The prices were lower than places downtown, perhaps they have lower overhead. Will visit again, definitely worth a try and worthy of their well received reviews already online.

Absolutely marvellous! we hit the new year’s day rush but definitely worth the wait! loved the cute and janky(in a good way) vibe and vintage atmosphere! everything on the menu looked great and the few we tried were so tasty! Great prices along with huge portions. As my sister said, best breakfast potatoes on the side, with trivia to go with. Would for sure return, maybe even try our luck with the prusa!

The service was excellent. The food was good. Love the restaurant. Portions are decent. Coffee is fresh and hot. The only drawback is that there seems to be a rougher crowd that congregates outside as there is homeless housing on the second level of the building. It was a bit daunting walking up to the restaurant with a group of nefarious individuals watching you. There are no issues once inside the restaurant.

What a great dinner. Great staff and great service. We tried each other foods and there was all great food. I highly recommend
Eloho Sido-Guest
The food was really tasty, hot, fresh, and good sized portions. Our server was very friendly, and took into consideration allergy restrictions. This diner has a vibrant atmosphere and free ample parking just beside the diner. I’ll be visiting again.
Judith Goss
The service was fabulous. The food was outstanding. Between the three of us we had the Greasy spoon, the Halouminami eggs Benedict and the Huevos Rancheros. All was delicious

This is my favorite place to go for breakfast. I went on a Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. No line-up today. It's always packed on the weekends because it is so good. Decent prices, excellent quality and funky atmosphere. The portions are more than average in my opinion. We both brought home half of our meal.
Tara Kachroo
We only ordered from the kids' menu - small servings very reasonably priced. The pancakes and waffles were delicious, and the grilled cheese sandwich was good too. They let us substitute a salad for the fries. Servers are attentive and friendly. Classic diner feel, decorated with classic comic book covers and old movie posters.

The host did their best to get us a table quickly on a busy day. Food was awesome, Both types of hash were very good. I feel like the decor needs a little update and unfortunately they were cleaning cutlery right next to my head. Would go again, great time!

What an amazing breakfast...so delicious! We have never seen so many variations on eggs Benedict. And what was even better than the food...the phenomenal staff who are extremely friendly and work together as a team. Thank you for a great breakfast experience.

First thing is first ballin in the new year omg good. I heard lots about this place and i finally had a chance to go and im so glad i did. Hands down best place in town. And the server Jacklin is awesome she rocks she was on top of things and knew what she was doing.

My favourite brunch place in town! Super friendly staff, great decor and the food is just amazing! Had the "there's something about kyle" two days in a row.. I think it should become a permanent menu item!
Nick Briand
This place is pretty neat. Fresh made food, pretty neat. Good service, that's also pretty neat. You get a 5 star review... yah that's neat.
Frank Mayhood
Spoons is an old-fashioned diner experience. Staff was friendly, and the Chocolate Shake excellent. They were out of pulley pork, but the Raptor burger and fries was a good replacement. I would recommend you try it.
Guy-André Michaud
Love the decor. Great food. Amazing service. Always a bonus when you win at double or nothing and get your meal for free. This Montréal boy highly recommends stopping here for brunch when in Victoria.

We love Spoons! Our favourite breakfast place in Victoria. Awesome food and staff. Can't wait until we go again!

Had an amazing meal there! The breakfast was soooo good! The atmosphere was fantastic. Love the decor! The staff were all amazing! So happy, full of energy and made it an experience! Definitely will be going back!

We found our new favourite breakfast place!! The food was so good and so generously portioned. The Diablo Benny is great....house made chorizo....mmmmm. My teenager had the Thetis...and couldn't finish it all. Excellent service from our waitress, Raven. We will be back :D
Walt Arbuckle
Amazing food. The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere was great. Recommended to anyone going to Victoria

I've eaten here several times in the last two or three months. My breakfast has always been served quickly, and has always been tasty. I have found the serving staff to be friendly and courteous. I will continue to visit!
Janice Aileen
My favorite breakfast spot in Vic!!! Best food! Amazing service!! Funky atmosphere! Just the best all around
Cynthia Hess
Lucky enough to walk in and only have to wait a couple of minutes for a table :) Food excellent, as always, attentive staff and the guy who seated us was extremely easy on the eyes ;)
Paul Ouellette
Great “greasy spoon” food without being greasy, service was ridiculously friendly and the atmosphere was perfect. It was the perfect pit stop on our last morning visiting the island 5/5👍👌
Craig Thomson
It's the people that impresses first, then the service, and the food keeps us going back. Always top-quality breakfasts. Selfishly wish they were open for supper / appies / snacks, at least on Fri-Sat nights.
Bart Vogelzang
Great service and excellent food. Quantities were great, as was quality. The venue is very busy though, so expect to wait in a long line. If you have trouble standing you might want to keep that in mind. Despite the lineup the staff don't rush you.
DaisyF
Pros: Wait for a table wasn't too long (15 mins on a Saturday morning) as it isn't in the downtown core and there are plenty of tables. Lots of available free parking on the side. The food is pretty cheap, and you get a lot of it. Everything tasted pretty good!

Cons: There was a long wait for our food, and when we did get it, both meals were cold. Our waitress was very understanding though, she offered to have it remade (I just asked for a quick microwave) and gave us a big discount off our bill. The coffee wasn't amazing, yet I don't expect much from a diner anyways.

We will probably go back, just because our issue was handled so well by our waitress, yet can't give it 5/5 as it wasn't an amazing experience.
Jimbexleyspeed
Fabulous food, great atmosphere, excellent staff and then some. What more can I say? Do I have any complaints? YES! the portions are huge! So, NO not really a complaint. Yes I had to wrap it up, and yes I ended up finishing it on the ferry to Vancouver. And hell yes! it was fantastic and I can't wait to go there again.

Love this place. Best breakfast in town with the friendliest staff. Order the Prusa and take your chances with a random concoction that the chief comes up it. Never had a bad meal at spoons.
Nomnivore
If I could give Spoon's a 10 I would! I love love love Spoons and eat there every chance I get! From the simple breakfast to the breakfast hash all the way to the completely random adventure of the Prusa. I've never ever left Spoons disappointed, even if my food comes out subpar or incorrect the staff there are always super great and nice. The manager and staff seem to really love what they do and it resonates through the place. I recommend this place to every single person I know!
NeverSayWhen
Delightful decor and friendly staff. Our waitress forgot to put in our ticket so we waited a long time for our food. However, she comped our food (we only paid for my drink and a tip). She was very apologetic and handled the situation very well. It was also insanely busy and she was running around like a boss. The food itself was good but not great. Huge portions of decent food. Both of us had the odd situation of having one of tbe poached eggs perfect and the other overcooked. We heard at neighbouring tables that this was happening frequently. Overall it was a hearty meal but the food wasn't memorable.

I had the breakgast wrap, figured you cant go wrong ... but I was... Served 2 wraps with burnt potatoes.. The wrap was soggy and flavorless.. basically some eggs and sausage smothered in melted processed cheese ... nasty! super disappointed!!
Kiki
I'm visiting Victoria for the first time & came here for breakfast. It's a funky little place, homey feel.

I ordered the Diablo's Benny and my BF ordered the Huevos Rancheros. His breakfast was delicious! My eggs Benny were OK. The chorizo sausage patty was a bit dry and the hollandaise sauce was a bit on the sweet side. Not a fan of the breakfast potatoes, greasy & tasteless.

Love this place, this is mine and our friends favourite breakfast place to go to in Victoria. Very reasonable prices and amazing food, they also offer weekly specials. You wouldn't think a restaurant in a Super 8 would be stellar, but it truly is. Well worth the line up for a curing a Sunday hangover. ;)
DoneAtFive
I like the food, but they changed their coffee a while ago and it's now awful coffee - even Timmies is better :-(
Big Mike
Nothing good about this place. Sub par food and sub par service. Don't even bother
Leah Vininsky-Oakes
Awesome breakfast place. Walked by this breakfast place a couple of times and finally decided to try it. It's in a pretty sketchy looking hotel, and they call themselves 'quirky and unpretentious'.
I wasn't so sure about a place that calls themselves unpretentious, but...I loved it!! I came at a good time (8 amish), when I left it was just getting busy. Friendly and efficient servers and great food. They definitely do breakfast well, but it's not the best. This is a place I come to when I'm hungover as it's a good greasy spoon place (so it's well named!).

Staff, food, atmosphere impeccable. I am ashamed to say I had reservations about the place upon first arriving. Those were quickly erased upon being seated (very quickly even for a large group) by the friendliest woman. The menu was overwhelming but in a really good way. I wanted to try everything! I have been back since and have had a chance to try out new dishes and find my regular go-to's. The food always hits the mark and have never once had a complaint from anyone I come with. The staff are genuinely interested in how the day is going, pick up on little, yet important things and react to medical emergencies in a calm, skilled way (I experienced this first hand - was so fortunate for the amazing staff). Cannot say enough of this place. Glad my now husband introduced it to me :) Great food for a great price!
Urban Foodie
Scant meat, too many potatoes. I've been here a couple of times now and they give out tons of potatoes, hardly any meat. Not worth it.

Fantastic breakfast joint! The food is always good, the coffee is as well, but the real reason I come here every weekend is the staff. Genuinely great staff, funny, good at what they do and just phenomenal people. The owner has done an excellent job defining Spoons' culture and creating a team to build around that culture. A real diner atmosphere, I always describe it as an extension of my kitchen/dining room, same comfortable feel.

See you soon guys! (Heading to Spoons in an hour)

Is this a thing?. I liked this place except that every single time no matter how I state it, ask, demand... doesn't matter the 'hash brown' or potatoes' w/e u call it are ALWAYS burnt! who wants burnt potatoes? not me, i tried a few times but always the same result. I will not be going back.

Why go anywhere else. Another perfect breakfast experince, Tanya and raven are always friendly personable and very adept at waitressing. The food is both flavorful and well presented. Portions never leave me wanting for more. My biggest problem is deciding what to try next as everthing I've had has been so enjoyable. Quality and consistancy has been excellent. The only place I go for breakfast.

Fantastic !!. This place is fantastic! There was a long line, but to be expected for a holiday monday. The hostess was very friendly (and hilarious!) Once we got in we were excited how huge the menu was. I ordered the pulled pork Eggs Benedict and my wife ordered Yogurt & Granola with homemade banana bread. We ended up sharing and they were both fantastic. I would have liked to have seen nicer fruit in my fruit bowl (melons and pineapple are what's in season I'm told). Great food, great service, we'll definitely be back!

I've been here a few times, always at the choice of friends, and my girlfriend nor I have ever enjoyed it. The food is plentiful but flavourless; the sooke potholes are exceptionally flavourless globs of batter akin to eating handfuls of flour washed down with a garden hose! The service is questionable depending on which server you get. One day, we waited over and hour and watched 4 groups of people seated and ordered after us, get served drinks, paid and left before we got our coffee and OJ. When we finally got our food, it was cold mush, and then got attitude from the server and manager about it. Our friends seem to like this place a lot but taste and hipsters rarely go together! ;) we won't be going back unless we're being dragged kicking and screaming... Lots of places far better out there.

Food and Service VERY dissapointing. My girlfriend and I were visiting Victoria for the weekend and were looking for a nice traditional breakfast place to go to with some local friends. We came across Spoons, and thought it sounded perfect! Upon our arrival, we were all really pleased with the service. Our coffees came quick and were delicious! We were all really excited for our meals! After about 45 minutes had gone by my friends and I began to get really hungry and a little impatiant. Even on a busy Sunday, a customer deserves their meal within 45 minutes of ordering. During our wait, not once did our server check in with us, ask if we needed anything, or even simply apologize for the wait. Finally after an hour of waiting, our food was put on the table. We were all starving, and dug in. Quickly our excitement diminished... After so much waiting and anticipation, my friends and I were expecting an incredible meal with much effort put into it. My friend found 3 pieces of Ham in her vegetarian meal, and another friend of mine's burger was practically raw. We were all super disappointed, but kept our cool. We casually and kindly mentioned it to our server who responded with a simple "oh.. that's weird." she then took it off the table and went to the kitchen. After her return, she practically interrogated my friend as if she had put the meat there herself. After feeling awkward about complaining, the last thing we wanted to hear was these rude remarks from our server. At the end of it all, her breakfast was not billed. But not once did we receive a sincere apology, or any sort of sympathy. They could have at least offered her her tea for free.

We were all appalled at the poor service and absolutely revolting food we were served. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Other than the cool vintage diner atmosphere, this restaurant really had nothing to offer.

Love this place! So much character and amazing food! Great prices for the food so make sure you come hungry!

Staying at the Super 8 and was pleasantly surprised by Spoons Diner. Food was tasty, reasonably priced, good atmosphere and friendly service. I would definitely recommend eating here.

A Very Un-Merry Birthday. My husband and I share the same birthday. We went to Spoon's for the 1st time as our neighbours rave about the place. My husband ordered an omelet that had chicken in it. I had the Huevos. It did look like the picture but to be honest it wasn't that appealing. I thought that it needed a bit more colour. The taste was good.
Not so much the omelet. My husband is not a fan of the blackened potato and that dam chicken kept coming back all day long.
The sadder part is that they didn't even comp a coffee for his 50th.
Mark Hamilton
I can't decide here. I have no complaints about cleanliness or service, the waitress was helpful, friendly - and the food was well executed, tasty and appealing. (I wouldn't know butter from margarine on toast like one reviewer claims) but I assure you the scrambled eggs are fresh, moist, tasty and I liked the hash brown potatoes. (I think if you are picky about food and want what your mother cooks for you.. then eat there!)
Luna
I decided I NEEDED to write a review for this place because I am just so impressed. Speedy, friendly service. Food was absolutely delish. Vegetarian options

Quick, tastey and fun!. We(our whole family) all really enjoy any meal at spoons. Great atmosphere and delicious food!
Gluten free options for celiacs which is really nice and they're very accommodating!

I like spoons, but the last 2 visits have left me with a bad taste in my mouth, Pun Intended. I get that their homefries are listed as crispy on the menu, but they are beyond crispy, they are burnt with one or two that still look like potatoes. Do you guys change the oil? Or as we joked, no one eats them, so they just refry them. Hopefully this is something the owners acknowledge as our servers couldn't.
Stefani-Alastair Watt
Really like it here. Always look forward to breakfast here...have never been disappointed in five years! To begin, parking is free in the ample rear car-park...seats are usually easy to find...menu, service, prices are fantastic...and finally, food is incredible!
Marta
Love it!. This is one of my favourite places to go to eat and hands down my favourite breakfast place in Victoria. All of the servers are so charming and I love the quirky, down-home atmosphere. If you want a pretentious meal then don't come here! The portions are enormous (especially for the price) and the specials are to die for.
Gmitzzz
Nasty Greasy Spoons. Filthy floors...a sign asking us to "wait to be seated" and a server who handed us menus and cutlery and told us to "sit wherever we wanted" ...the place was hauntingly empty at 9:00 am for breakfast. Orders placed for eggs benny and an omlette special. Food was inedible. Potatoes incinerated. Eggs floating in grease and the mushrooms and avocadoes in the omlette both black with age. Greyish stringly meat supposed to be chicken didn't look or taste like any chicken I've ever eaten. Server called out from across the room "how are your first few bites" we replied "terrible" and she kept on cleaning the other side of the restaurant. My companion, finding her eggs benny too nasty left for the restroom feeling "ill". I pushed my plate aside having opened the omlette to expose the greasy nasty mess inside. I sure did not want to send it back to the kitchen to "fix" things. Server appears and asks me do I "want to wrap it up and take it home?" Absolutely the worst dining experience ever in Victoria. Unless you want a case of stomach upset that you have to pay for avoid this place as if it had the "plague".
Erin
Mmm. burgers. I had a burger there and it was almost as good as one I would make at home! I'll go back, for sure! : )

Overrated. I have been to Spoons on 2 different occasions.
I had to wait a rather long time, (as was expected), and was anticipating something good
Both times I ordered the "Chefs Choice" item where the cook makes you whatever he/she feels like.
Both times the meal was disgusting. (thinking on the 2nd time that I had a chef with a bad idea the first time and this time would be different)

Making some version of an Eggs Benedict with ground beef on the bottom is not a good combination.

Both times I was there I tasted food from others around me and the overall consensus was that the food was sub-par and did not live up to the hype.

To me, the restaurant is overrated. They have been on top of Victoria Breakfast lists for so long and it has gone to their head.

Good Note
The service was quite good and the people were quite enjoyable to be around; only the food wasn't where it should be, and the wait was too long.
Traci Ann Wright
Always delicious! Today was no exception. Reliable, fresh, yummy! Staff always helpful and friendly.
Chefassassin
Uncomfortably full.. I had the Prusia, a dish where the kitchen decides what they will make for you. They then give the customer the option to flip a coin, double or nothing for the cost of the breakfast ($12). The breakfast was hearty and the food well seasoned. The potatoes were good. The service however was great, our server Kat was wonderful, many refills were brought for our coffee and she was super friendly. I will go back.

In Victoria for a vacation, and used urbanspoon to find a good breakfast place, we were not disapointed!!!
Menu is hilarious, prices reasonable, good is healthy, good portions and yum! Staff friendly and definitely one of the things this place has going for it is the atmosphere. Very cool

Yukkkkkk. We'll i've puked in my mouth and found it to be better tasting.....the waitress was cleaning up when we arrived then she was involved in a giggle fest with her friends in the corner rather than seating us (sign says wait to be seated)..after getting a seat we had to ask for cleaner cutlery.got my eggs in 4 minutes flat and they were about as runny as U can get.I asked for a re -do and could hear the angry cook from the back screaming about it,then I saw the 8 headed hydra of a cook,a massive man who looked like he belonged in a biker club restaurant and i'm sure he had MOM tattooed on his bicep, after seeing him shoot us a dirty look I was not about to dine there out of fear of being posioned.not for this vancouverite, maybe fine for the vic crowd but my opinion was a bad experience
Local
NOT EDIBLE. This is the first time I have ever been able to say this about a simple breakfast meal. Who would have thought a breakfast joint could screw up eggs, toast, hash and bacon. Actually didn't think it was possible. The scrambled (yes, ultra simple) was made from that fabricated egg product-tasteless, rubbery and gray. Toast, well done, and dripping with a liquid margarine product. Hash was impressive....deep fried frozen potatoes that had to have seen at least 2 rounds in the deep fryer. There was not even a hint of potato left inside. And bacon. How do you screw that up? Well, they managed. It was so burnt that it crumbled when I went to pick it up. I would swear that it was deep fried twice (with the potatoes)as well but the waitress said it was just fried. Must have been on that grill since the time they opened. Thing to yourself, oh, I will just grab a coffee? Try Mac's or 7-11. I can guarantee you that the coffee will be better or at least stronger. This is the worst breakfast I have ever been served in my life and I have a soft spot for greasy spoons. And to add insult to injury, it cost over $12 for an inedible meal.

There are restaurants that are ok, or not so good but those should not be confused with this HORRIBLE food. They should just be embarrassed and quietly close their doors forever before the health inspector arrives. There is a McD's across the street for the desperate.
Tracy
Inconsistent. Service is mediocre but the food is super inconsistent, my last visit a few weeks ago was horrible! I had the "breakfast potato skins", the eggs were so dry and overlooked they were barely eatable. I would have told the waitress but by the time she checked on us it we were ready to leave.
Palm Bay
Not Impressed. I don't enjoy having to ask the server to take my order (while they are speaking to friends at another booth)
I don't enjoy having to wait for the server to remove my plates from the table ( this time sitting at the table with friends enjoying a coffee) AND when I ask for my food to be wrapped up, I super don't enjoy having to-go containers dropped at my table for me to do it my self. Dont' get me wrong Im not a lazy person but the purpose of eating out is so that I don't have to do the work! A side bar to the worst service I have EVER had is that the food is good
Westcoaster49
I was looking for a reasonably priced breakfast this morning and decided to try Spoons after finding it on urbanspoon. Delicious coffee. For breakfast, I was intrigued by "The Prusa" for $10. As the menu states, it is "Whatever the kitchen feels like making for ya". Decided to give it a shot. Only input you get is Breakfast or Lunch, Sweet or Savory, Vegetarian or Not. Opted for breakfast, savory, non-vegetarian. Was pleasantly surprised at what I got (will post photo). HUGE portion, delicious wrap containing eggs, cheese, avocado, bacon and peppers, accompanied by sour cream, salsa, fresh cut hash browns, tomato slices and lettuce. Very tasty. Could only eat half so having the rest for lunch. Service was good and food came quickly. Pleasant server. Regular coffee refills without having to ask. Now I just need to decide if I will do the final part of "The Prusa" -- the flip. If you are feeling lucky, you can flip a coin with the server. If you win, they pay. If they win, you pay double ($20). Is it my lucky day?!?!!
S
The WORST food EVER. We came here late in the afternoon and the place was about a 1/4 full -- the server acknowledged us but decided it was more important to clean tables than to seat us. Got some watered down oj and our food came FAST. Thats when it got bad... I ordered eggs benny and they must have not drained the eggs at all because my muffin was WET. I'm not talking a bit soggy -- completely WET... I tried to eat it as I was SOOO hungry (and I hate sending food back) but I just couldn't. My husband offered his sandwich and that was disgusting too. The server had them re-do my order and somehow tried to make it seem like it was my fault -"oh you must like you bread crispy, theyre going to double toast it." NO I don't like it extra crispy, I just don't like it wet!!! When it came back, I ate about half one muffin and gave up, it was the most disgusting thing I have ever been served at a restaurant. Greasy overcooked sausage, flavourless hollandaise, crappy overcooked hashbrowns....didnt even bother complaining again, I just paid and left. Another reviewer mentioned Shine, and funnily enough -- thats where we decided to go after... -- why pay the same price at Spoon for GARBAGE! Save your money, if you're close by - go to kittys instead!
Sammy
It would be fine putting up with a dingy restaurant if the food was a home run... but when you are eating crappy food and wish you had eaten across the street at ABC of all places you might as well just close up shop.
Jaclynn
Yummy food and HUGE portions on most dishes. I've rarely been able to finish the whole thing. I have a few menu favorites and have been trying the Prusa occasionally which has been good everytime. There are still more "sweet" breakfast options I want to try! So many options for sides as well. I've never had a bad experience with the service although sometimes it can be a little slow if it's busy.
Majimart
Huge portions, but quality fluctuates. Hollandaisr sauce was good; potatoes were tremendous and not prepared well. Eggs were poached well, but the chorizo was really hard--didn't eat the second piece. Coffee was good, service was terrible. Why the long wait for food? We'll try it again, and hope other menu items are equally good next time.
Dhaut
Lovely. Everytime we are in Victoria we must slide into this fun ol school greasy spoon. Consistent good times!,
Dave
Meh. Always go for the huevos rancheros, but the quality has been hit and miss lately. Likely made worse by the owner being on Mat leave. Slightly overpriced and terrible coffee.
Neat atmosphere, just needs someone with more experience to run it.
J.J.
Spoons...satisfies in every way. I'm not one to write a review but... friendly fast service, funky atmosphere, reasonably priced delicious meals that always leave me stuffed... how could I resist? After eating there pretty regularly recently I just had to let people know (other than telling everyone I know or speak to). Spoons is my favourite place to go to eat out. My only complaint (ha ha) is that I always eat more than I should 'cause it tastes too darn good.
Martin Jones
The staf are cool but 2 breakfasts and 2 coffees should not be $40 with tip. At least not the breakfast we had.
Amberlynn
I LOVE LOVE SPOONS! Great food Friendly service and great value ! It is our breaky spot to go. You can often find us there Sunday mornings. You can't go wrong at Spoons :0)
Spanish_lips_02
So what can I say went to this amazing place for breakfast, the food was so good, and the atmosphere was so much fun. The girls where great and so upbeat. Sunday was crazy busy and sat out on the patio. The server was very efficient and got my breakfast just perfect. I am little of a high maintenance person, and she was amazing. Oh and have I mentioned the ceaser's, so good. Can't wait till the next time my husband and I get the chance to go again. I recommend this plce to everyone I know and don't know, just try it once you won't be sorry. AMAZING.

Came away not as impressed as I expected. Yeah, I've been to Floyd's before, and this was I suppose some of the same.
There was little to no lineup on the Sunday morning that we were there, took a minute or two for them to seat us, but after that it was pretty clear sailing.
Enjoyed the food tremendously... I tend to be a pretty 'hefty' eater, and I had trouble finishing the awesomeness that was before me.
I had some sort of hash deal-y-o with hollandaisse sauce on the side... It was absolutely brilliant.

Even with these good things, and the good company I was with... it still didn't hit me right in ALL the right places.

I'd probably go there again though.
WindyCindy
This used to be my favourite place to go for breakfast up until last weekend. The service was so bad that I cancelled my order and walked out...something I'd never done before now. I felt very disrespected and looked down upon by our server and when I got up to leave and explain the situation to another girl I got nothing but an attitude. I feel bad giving poor reviews but I'm hoping someone will read this and think again about how they act towards paying customers.
A Fat Bloke
Issues poorly dealt with. I have had a number of great breakfasts here. Today I had a horrible experience. Eggs, ordered medium poached, turned out to be completely raw insidem raw eggwhite running all over the plate. Waitress took 4 visits back and forth to the kitchen before offering to cook me a half order (since i had already eaten some) and to only charge for a 1/2 order (=$2 off). Made to feel like I was trying to rip them off. 20 minutes from discovering the issue to getting replacement food, by which time the kids were finished and restless. No apology was forthcoming. My last breakfast at Spoons. Unacceptable. Advice? Learn how to cook eggs and how to deal with issues.
Food Veteran
Cool and Funky but the food?. Tried this place 4 times now as it is popular with my co-workers. I keep expecting something with some wow, because the menu reads well, but not to be. Any one can serve deep fried leftover potatoes, runny eggs and deep fried sausages. Also tried a Panini sandwich and a couple of the skillets. I can make better at home, so that is where I will have one from now on. Maybe the cook is burned out, who knows?
SwampLily
Hit & Miss. Service is always good at Spoon's, but the food is hit-and-miss. My husband and I have eaten breakfast there about 6 times and we've found it's best to stick to the basics and forget about the weird concoctions on the menu. The tortilla-lasagna was AWFUL; we were starving that morning and each ate about 1/3 of our dish before we stopped - each bite got worse because the tortillas in it were slimy and gross. On the plus side, the waitress saw that we didn't like the dish and charged us for only one breakfast. I couldn't eat much of the hash, either, so took it home then threw it away. But the coffee, eggs, toast(s), sausage, and bacon are all good, and I recommend the grilled tomato instead of the mountain of hash browns.

Our new breakfast place!. My wife and I used to go to "chain" restaurants for breakfast. *sigh* I know. Bad. We always like to support local and well, we just didn't have any good local breakfast options in the Langford area. We now happily make the trek downtown to Spoons. Food is great, fresh, and HUGE portions. I've only ever finished one meal there. Soo much food! My highlights would be, the fresh, hand cut fruit salad, instead of those 20L pails of "honey dew and cantaloupe" salad sitting in god knows what chemical. And the staff. The staff are down to earth, friendly, happy people. They take the time to talk to you, and not just "do their job" chit chat like most employees at a chain restaurant. Keep up the good work guys!! :) M&J

Chocolate chip pancakes? Om nom nom. Love Spoons. I had the benny with Chorizo and it was amazing - really delicious and spicy, which worked well with the cooling avocado and tasty hollandaise. My husband had the chocolate chip pancakes, which were also yummy.

My only regret is not getting a side of candy. But we'll be back! Maybe next weekend....

Word up.. Love the menu. Love the chill atmosphere. GREAT BENNY! LOve the prusia (?) breakfast where you can flip for it and either get it free or pay double. They keep the coffee topped up and we didnt have to wait long at all for our server / meals.

Only one small small thing, it would be nice to have glass drinking glasses for water as opposed to plastic. THats my only recommendation!

This place is fantastic, great food probably the best diner food I've had. The Prusa is a great choice for people who like to be surprised! Friendly staff, cool atmosphere, my favourite place to eat.

The American idol Benny is the best Benny breakfast in town! Sometimes they are accomodating about no bacon but other times we are forced to have it on the side (why?) Just don't order it for dinner as it's not as fresh! Love spoons!

Spoons! :D. This place is fantastic. The servers are always enthusiastic and attentive and the breakfast is amazing (and there is ALWAYS leftovers).
If you haven't been before, go check it out.

Left with no service... Went here on a saturday morning and was sat fairly quickly because we decided to sit at the bar...It was busy, which I had assumed it was going to be, but I was in no hurry, so a wait I was ready for...we were served coffee right away but with no milk/cream or sugar in sight...after about 15mins of sitting there looking around at the chaotic service and no sense of leadership on the floor I started to get a little impatient...My attempts to make eye contact with the servers were not working ( i will never flag down a server, just cant do it ). I looked at my watch and told my girlfriend we are leaving in 5 mins if nothing happens...during that 5 mins people who were sat after us got served..I heard apologies at the register to the customers for the long wait, and numerous food discounts were being handed out...5 mins hit and we were out..
I may give this place another chance on a less busy day...but this place for me seems like a place that gets their business from putting up eye candy on the walls/play groovy music and to be 'seen'.
No hard feelings... just an off morning perhaps...I will try again one day ..

Nice food. Stumbled on this cute little place. The server was very nice and enthusiastic. We ordered an eggs benedict and a panini. Both were well executed and delicious. Portions were huge and even though we were starving, we could not finish all of it. Would really recommend this place.

My husband and I went for breakfast today and it was fabulous! I had the Zirk omelette stuffed with spinach, caramelized onions, Swiss cheese, tomatoes and it was excellent and so fresh! Huge portion - I could only get through half. My husband had the tortilla omelette and it too was amazing! The service was fast and super friendly! Loved the decor....can't wait to come back to try the burgers!!

Spoons... oh Spoons.... Classic... this is one classic diner!
From the orange and green interior, which always brightens my mood walking in, to the feisty lively entertainment delivered by whatever server comes to your table. We are always welcome...
My friends and I have made this our weekend breakfast place for more reasons I can explain. Our meals, always tasty and hot, to the feelings of welcome every time we enter.
I highly recommend Spoons anytime of the week... before 3pm of course!
Jade S.

Good food but. We're there for little late lunch on Saturday for the first time visit after tried to get in few times before but didn't have a patient. Luckily we got the seat almost right a way, thou couldn't ignore staffs there were looking at us but no one come to see us to seat. Lunch was good as I heard about it but our server didn't even come to the table once and refill my coffee. I tried to stop server when she walked by our table but she ignored us. Other server noticed and refill for me. Maybe she didn't hear us but my coffee mug was edge of table to let server to know I need some more coffee...that's how much she pay attention to her table. We finished our lunch, all knife and folk and used serviette was on plates but she still not taking our dirty dishes. We waited for a while to get the bill but she still didn't seems come by so I got up to the front and get it myself. Maybe she had a bad day. I heard all the staff are friendly there and they seem to be too but not the one we had. She may had a bad day... we'll go back for a good lunch though.

Excellent Breakfast. My partner and I purchased a Groupon coupon for Spoons last week and walked into a bustling restaurant on Friday morning. This was our inaugural visit and we now look forward to many return trips. The food was superb and the service was great. We know the owner was a little nervous about the Groupon move, but I think it will turn into long term benefit for Spoons. Keep it up folks. You have all the right ingredients.

Wasn't impressed. Felt dirty inside. Table was sticky. Hair in glass. Had an idol benny but wasn't very tasty - pesto hollandaise was thick and floury. Substituted potatoes with fruit & price was $15! Definitely a greasy spoon diner... I'll stick with Shine Cafe where it feels clean & ingredients are fresh & gourmet.

I frequent spoons / floyds with a new name same menu , for 2 Reasons free parking fast service .. Food is unpredictable some times great usually average but huge portions and friendly atmosphere make it a comfortable non pretentious greasy spoon ..

Was first introduced to the "sister" breakfast joint Floyds, and then found this little treasure! Other breakfast joints should take note; Spoons has a kicked back vibe, efficient service, and Ur always welcomed with a smile. Good coffee, wicked Benedict selections and their hash is heavenly! I could go on, but at the end of the day this is my favorite place in victoria, try it.out!

My amazing Spoons experience. I had been told by friends about how fantastic the breakfast at Spoons is and finally got around to going last weekend. Not only was the food extremely great but the atmosphere put it over the top. Very laid back homey feel yet with quick and friendly service. The staff was delightful and helpful. I was presently surprised by the giant portions sizes and the low prices. Recommended to everyone.

One of my fav spots for Sunday breakfast.... excellent portions for the price....and even better friendly service

THE BEST. I hate parking in downtown Victoria. The only thing I hate more is PAYING for parking in downtown Vic. Which can cause problems when I need my fix of breakfast foods!

Solution? SPOONS DINER. I have been here so many times for brunch with my girlfriends and we always manage to get a table right away, service is fast, friendly and genuine, atmosphere is great and did I mention PLENTY OF PARKING? I know it sounds silly to love a place just because or parking but let me explain. Spoons is a bit outside of downtown, and they are also at the bottom of a hotel so you can enjoy your meal at a leisurely, care-free pace.

Bottom line: great food, great prices, great place.

Best place in Victoria for breakfast. Staff is super friendly and welcoming, they all obviously love their jobs and you can tell. Food is typical diner fare, but there are some really funky original items on there too. I keep my frequent diner card on me at all times!

Terrible service experiences, still a favourite.. On the slowest days, the service has never been anything special, pushing aside a few isolated bad experiences. Still, on the busiest days, the food is always amazing.

This restaurant would easily be my #1 favourite breakfast spot in town if the service wasn't so laissez-faire. The food is consistently the best, the prices competetive, and yes, the casual atmosphere is great. The staff are friendly and competent - WHEN they're actually doing their job.

I once waited with a group of friends for over an hour for our food; no discount, explanation, or apologies. In fact, our table had a view of the kitchen where we watched our food sit on the line for about ten minutes, while our server ate with her fingers and chatted with the kitchen before taking something else out entirely. We were in no hurry, a pretty casual group, and it was a busy floor. The food was so good the horrible service was forgotten and we left happy. So we took our chances, came back again and many times after that. Service was alright and food was still great.

However, In my most recent experience, we came in with only two or three other tables in the restaurant. We waited 40 minutes for two burgers, and watched the staff socialize while our drinks went unfilled through the entire wait. We got up to request our food to go and pay. Within a minute our table was bussed - even though our drinks had sat about 20 minutes empty. We didn't wait much longer for our food. We were given a 50% discount but no explanation, making it a bit of a leap of faith when we consider Spoons again. As mentioned before, the service staff are friendly and they know their stuff. They could be a dream team, one of the best in town, if they were just a little more disciplined and conscientious. We come to Spoons for the laid back ambience, but that should never be at the expense of efficiency or come off as self absorbed (as it sometimes does).

On a positive note, the burgers were incredible and the food will keep us coming back - just not for a very long time. If you're in a hurry, you're taking a pretty big chance with dining in. If not, then sit back (you might be there a while) and enjoy.

Nice Breakfast Spot - Kinda Funky. Decided 2 do a US search for Victoria breakfast spots and this hit my radar. I liked that it was away from the Wharf-core so line-ups and crowds wouldn't be a problem.

Ordered the Marge Benny and wife had the Tis french toast. My benny was done well (except eggs a lil' harder than I prefer). My wife who is not a breakfast-fan found her french toast interesting (perhaps a lil' 2 sweet) and would of preferred traditional interpretation.

All in all - solid spot 4 breakfast.

Mmmmmmm. Great food, awesome staff, retro diner atmosphere... can it get better than this? Locally owned and operated, convenient free parking, toe tapping music played, and they have an expresso machine. Yup, it just got better.

The food was excellent and the service very friendly. The only problem, if you want to call it that, was TOO MUCH food. I should have stopped sooner, I still felt stuffed the next morning. Can't blame them for my gluttony.

Breakfast!. Good food, ample free parking, and kiddie-friendly.
Friendly staff who usually do a great job of keeping your coffee cup full (which is important to a caffeine junkie like me.)
You will NEVER leave hungry if you order the "BC Hash"!
IF there is a lineup, no worries at all - it is indoors, and they will setup a coffee station to help you keep your sanity.
A good solution to that weekend hangover!

I love this place!. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Victoria. Unpretentious, comfortable and relaxed. The service is friendly and the coffee is great!

So it was then that when my Oh-So Original Benedict ($10) with its handsome serving of crispy-chunk hashbrowns arrived seven minutes after I did at Spoons Diner, my fork and my taste buds were completely overjoyed. Not only was it delivered with a warm smile but quickly followed by a nuanced but well-intentioned hand on my shoulder. “I hope you enjoy your breakfast,” the waitress said as she moved to top up my water. It’s a classic server move and as a former server myself I appreciate the effect it can have on a patron’s sense of comfort; and let me tell you – it worked wonders on me. I dove into my breakfast with youthful exuberance, pausing only to encouragingly respond to my waitress who returned after a few minutes to ensure I was enjoying everything.

I ordered the “I-Gotta-Be-Different” Hash ($11) served with two pieces of multi-grain toast. The hash combines spinach, tomatoes, eggs, mushrooms, hot peppers, cheddar & jack cheese, homemade salsa and onions with some of Franks Hot Sauce mixed in. It was like tasting a little b
