Review J & J Wonton Noodle House - Victoria

I am a Taiwanese and we live in Los Angeles so we know what is good Chinese food. You have to try their shrimp wonton soup, chef’s special chicken, vegetable fry dishes. Very tasty. And their hot tea is just one of the best kind that a traditional Chinese style hot tea for dinner. The staff is very friendly too. We went to eat there two days in a row.

Just ordered lunch today and it came in only 10 minutes. Very fast service. I ordered the pork wonton soup with veggies. The broth is very flavourful and the wontons are delicious. You can tell all the vegetables and ingredients are very fresh. Will order from here again!

I live so close and yet hadn't been here until now. Kind of easy to miss spot on Fort St, but if you are craving Chinese food this is a good spot. Food was incredibly quick to come out, and was served hot. Spicy Beef Satay was my favorite, also tried the Cashew Chicken which was a bit mushroom heavy for my taste. I didn't think the dishes listed as spicy were very spicy at all. I will return, great value!

The best Chinese restaurant in Victoria and one of my favourites anywhere in Canada! Absolutely delicious. If you come, you must try the Wonton Soup which is as perfect a soup as you can get anywhere. I would recommend getting a reservation as it gets very busy. 5/5!

This restaurant serves delicious Chinese food at low prices. Also, the food is served very quickly. My favorite dishes at this restaurant are the House Special Fried Rice and House Special Chow Mein. You should try them when you visit this restaurant. By the way, it is recommended to make a reservation for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays as it gets very crowded.

I don’t give a five star very often, but this place blew me away. First off for anyone else that’s Gluten Free or Celiac, the absolute peace of mind that you can order something made in a GF kitchen and not be stressed out about problems is phenomenal. Secondly their GF menu is a second standalone which was nicely flushed out with a mixture of dishes. i’ve read other reviewers talking about the cost and yes it is a bit over average but I guess the dishes I ordered were just on the mark. all three were very large servings and good ingredients. Plus you know when you are used to gluten-free lifestyle you unfortunately get used to very high prices -so this seemed reasonable for me. Go to be honest it was my first sit down since the pandemic so I was pretty excited, but the whole experience was great. Didn’t wait long for a table, had excellent and attentive service, very open to answer questions and make suggestions. No awkward having to explain being gluten-free or asking about ingredients in substitutions. It was just easy. I had a nice seat facing the street in the window for some people watching. The food did not take long and filled my entire table! I guess because it’s been a long time since I’ve eaten out , but I was shocked at how much food there was on my plate. My three dishes lasted me 3 1/2 meals. And If you haven’t read my reviews before, I eat big! OK let’s talk about the food. I did shoot a great video of it but unfortunately you can’t upload it so check out my pictures. I had a combination of standard chinese dishes and one fun dish being the tofu eggplant hot pot -which came so hot it was bubbling for a good five minutes! So you get entertainment and a meal ;). Nice balance of hot, sweet and sour, a little bit too much thin sauce for my liking and I would’ve liked some shiitake mushroom in there , but that’s a personal choice. The other dishes were your standard Chinese fare. The first was mixed greens with prawn which had the standard Chinese take away flavor. One which I hadn’t had since before glueing gluten-free so that was pretty fantastic. MSG enhanced? Highly likely. However I didn’t have the response to it so maybe not. And the last was the recommendation by my server for the garlic ginger beef with snow peas. I’m still shocked at how much beef was on that plate - seriously look at the pictures. Very well seasoned, the beef was surprisingly tender considering it’s not a high-quality cut which means they braised it properly. veggies were perfect colour and crunchy texture Could’ve done with a bit less oil but otherwise nice. Obviously had a lot leftover to take away and they were great with the whole experience. no awkwardness. No fuss. They brought really decent quality eco take away containers ( 🙏 ) then gave me the time and space to put my food the way that I wanted. I had a happy belly, a very happy state of mind, good and ample leftovers and a great memory which will bring me back the next time I visit town.

First time visiting this place. We got ma po tofu, bbq duck, Szechuan wonton and wonton soup. The duck was really tender, juicy and full of favors. Wontons were delicious. My husband got it with soup and I got it spicy. We didn’t like the tofu much. It wasn’t spicy enough and it tastes little different than we normally had in other places. But my husband liked how they added mushrooms to it.

This is the best Chinese food in town, hands down. You pay a little more than other Chinese restaurants, but what you get in return is the elevated quality. Our main staples are the crispy spicy ginger fried beef and the honey sesame fried chicken, both delicious and packed with flavor. We regularly order takeout from here and usually order enough for a few meals worth (hence why we spend $50-60 per person). Average price per dish is around $18 and you'll want to order a few. The food comes fast too, you won't be waiting long, which is amazing. Recommend dining in if you can, so the food is freshest.

Saw this restaurant on Time Out’s top places to eat in Victoria - it did not disappoint. One of my favourite Chinese meals ever. The Sichuan wontons were so good we had them twice. Will be back here when we’re next on the island!

Really great Chinese food! Large family style portions, tasty good quality food! This place gets busy even with the pandemic. Lots of dine-in and take out, and it’s for a good reason! Service is great, very friendly, quick and attentive!

There is a very good reason that this place is always busy, and has been open for literally forever. The service is delightful, and the food come QUICK! There is something for everyone, and I can't say enough about the taste. You MUST go yourself and find out how yummy things are.

Okay, being Celiac and likening Chinese food does not give you much options. J&J is one place you want to check out their attention to detail and how tasty the food is crazy that it is Gluten Free. The staff is so friendly.

💵: A bit pricey but just few of the places that offer quite good Chinese Foods 🍜: We ordered 🍚 House Special Fried Rice 4⭐ A little oily but can't get enough of 😋 🍤 Salt and Pepper Prawn 4⭐ Quite good 🍗 Sweet and Sour Chicken 3⭐ Chicken's a little chewie 🍱: The portion of the big one is just for 2pax ⌛: The wait time is quite fast, to be honest. 👥: Service, I think it's fine. But, nothing out of the ordinary.

We absolutely love JJ wonton. It has a gluten-free menu, for gluten-friendly peoples. We like the house special chow fun, sweet and sour lean pork, the chicken fried rice, and are looking forward to trying other dishes. We are also so excited that they reopened in October so we could go for the dine-in experience.

I almost always order the same thing for lunch at JJs....the Sichuan style braised beef noodle soup. It was fantastic...a slightly sweet delicious broth and beef that melts in your mouth. Sadly, I went today and it was not the same soup I've been ordering for the past few years. The broth has changed...not as thick and didn't have the same slight sweetness. The beef was tough and I had to really bite into it. I was so disappointed. I'll try it one more time but if it's the same as today I'll have to switch to something else.

was awesome a few years ago, until they sold it and new owners took over, the food doesn't taste the same ever agian, so sad, really loved this place for our chinese food cravings

found the food of inferior quality for take-out.....beef very dry and TOUGH,  special fried rice bland without added anything,  green beens old and withered, and alsogai lan old and woody.

the only place for Chinese food in town. .period. .<br/>we have been going here for over 20 years now and never had s bad meal. .the ginger beef is definitively one of the best dishes here. .

J&J's was the venue chosen for our last dinner/dining experience during a recent stay in Victoria.  With the restaurant closed on Sundays and Mondays, this was our first opportunity to get there, and we were looking forward to it.<br/><br/>The restaurant is located in a neighbourhood just outside of the downtown core, in a block (of Fort Street) just beyond what tourist maps indicate as "Antique Row".  An easy find, and interesting area.  The restaurant opens at 4:30pm - we arrived a touch early, parked, and did a short walkabout before it opened.  We were not the only ones arriving early - when it opened, four tables worth of diners, and a couple of people coming for take-out orders, entered the place!  Glad we came early.<br/><br/>It's a small, and very unassuming-looking place (especially so from its outside appearance), but offers more seating inside than one might expect from seeing it outside.  There is certainly nothing fancy in decorations and the like inside - from what I saw, it's mostly dark, bare walls, and rather dimly-lit lighting.  The most lighted spot is at back, the kitchen, which is visible through a full-size, glass window, enabling diners to view the cooks doing their thing.  Our first impression -- I think we've found "our kind of Chinese restaurant"!<br/><br/>What we (threesome) ordered and shared: <br/>.... all the servings were large, well-prepared and presented, and served piping hot to our table.  The ginger beef and prawns were prepared Szechuan style, "hot & spicy" - when the server was taking our orders, we agreed on 'medium'.<br/><br/>--  crispy, spicy, ginger fried beef - dark, quite large pieces of beef, with a fairly-crispy outside, and tender inside, w/some green onion.  It was hot, it was spicy, and it was very tasty!  A portion was left to take back to our hotel, and it was enjoyed as a snack the next day on our balcony back home!  <br/><br/>--  stir-fried prawn w/black bean sauce - shelled prawns, tender and juicy, and good assortment of veggies.  Everything cooked perfectly.  Yum! a very flavourful and tasty dish.  <br/><br/>-  stir-fried squid w/hot, ginger garlic sauce - squid rings, tasty and tender, and nice assortment of veggies (including some good-size mushrooms).  The squid was tender, the veggies cooked perfectly, and the sauce hot & spicy (a touch too!).  But guess we enjoyed it, as there was nothing was left on the plate!! <br/><br/>-  house special chow mein - a nice assortment of meat, chicken, noodles, and veggies.  It looked good, and tasted the same.  The plate was cleaned!<br/><br/>We enjoyed our total dining experience at J&J's, the food was exceptional, the service good, and we left 'full & happy', and very pleased we had chosen to dine there for our last dinner in Victoria.

Best place for Asian in Victoria. I'm from Vancouver where there are multiple top notch places for great Asian cooking and sadly, the choice in Victoria isn't great but JJ's is phenomenal and the staff are ever so friendly!
Julia
My husband and I went here for dinner, as we've been searching for a new Chinese restaurant. It was pretty tasty, we had the wor wonton soup, the house special chow Mein, ginger fried beef, and sesame chicken. Everything was pretty tasty, however the chow mein was a bit crispy and undercooked. I liked that it came with lots of vegetables however there were more veggies than noodles. It was pretty expensive, all told. I wish they had combo dinners. We'll be back for lack of quality Chinese food in Victoria.

Great service and authentic tasty food.<br/>The ladies working at J & J's are absolutely wonderful and very helpful, kind, and funny.<br/>My family and I had the Szechuan shrimp noodle soup, BBQ duck noodle soup, and Szechuan beef with hot chili bean sauce. Each dish was simply delicious and served very quick.<br/>The Szechuan shrimp noodle broth was spicy with a little hint of sweetness and filled with vegetables. <br/>The BBQ duck noodle soup was very authentic and the broth was not heavy at all. Absolutely perfect.<br/>The Szechuan beef was also nice, had a little spice and lots of broccoli.

Had dinner last evening? It was excellent again. Great service, friendly staff. Love the open kitchen, very impressed to see all the chefs wearing traitional chef hats. Keep up the great cusine. Its not cheap to eat there but the dollar value is shining through the flavours of the cuisine.

Amazing food, Good atmosphere and friendly servers. Plus if you need it they have a wide selection of gluten free options that are quite good! The only mind downside (isn't a big deal) is some of the servers look/dress very casually and often look like restaurant goers more than they look like restaurant servers.

If you are looking for authentic Chinese/Cantonese dishes, this is definitely NOT the place. But if you want something fusion, tailored to western flavors but much better than food court Chinese food then this is a place to try.

Great duck!!!. Love the Peking duck. Lovely staff. We will be back.

J&J nothing special wor wonton..... I had a special wor wonton soup the other day and i must say i was disappointed. The broth was very light and had almost no taste. I added soy sauce and siracha at home to make it better. The portion was o.k and the wonton were good.I cant talk about the rest of the menu but for 14.95 i was expecting better from a place call the Wonton Noodle House. If you are craving good soup i would recommend Pho Vy downtown.Have a good day :)

Chow mein was great. Mixed veggies also good. Won ton excellent. Ginger beef terrible. Very over cooked. It was chewery than jerkey, our jaws hurt after eating. Lemon chicken ok. The sauce light and flavourable. Overpriced for Chinese.

A little on the pricier side but some fine tasting food. Recommend the hot and sour soup.

Best Chinese food anywhere!. We love the food so much that we eat lunch at J&Js three times a week and we have done so for ten years. Our super favourite dishes are spicy ginger fried chicken; garlic pork; spicy tofu vegetable noodle soup; halibut noodle soup; stir fried prawns and vegetables (with a variety of great sauces). Reasonable prices and excellent service. Whenever visitors come to town, we bring them straight to J&Js for dinner.

That BEST I have ever had, 5 stars!! I love their food it's always fresh! The variety of flavours are unreal!! They are very friendly and happy to customize your order just the way you like!

Garlic Green Beans. My husband and I are regulars at J&J's, especially take-out. We always get the garlic green beans which are delicious. Recently, we took some friends to dinner and sampled three of the specials: halibut, prawns and scallops. All the dishes were mouthwatering.

Refreshing.... For many a year this was clearly the best Chinese food in Victoria but I just stopped going altogether due to the less than desirable attitude of the service. This evening we made it in just before closing only to be graciously accepted and further treated to exceptional service and even more exceptional food!! We requested an old favourite of Halibut Noodle Soup (off the lunch menu) and sub'd the bok choy out for gai lan. Wow, truly perfect. We also ordered the hot & sour soup which was good too, but not the best I've ever had. The other dishes we enjoyed tonight were the Ginger & Onion Chow Mein and the Spicy Ginger Chicken which were both outstanding. The dining room appeared to have seen some recent improvements and the staff were cheery and helpful. Glad to have my favourite Chinese food restaurant back!!

Fresh and flavourful. I love the soups at J & J. The wor wonton soup, the house special noodle soup, the preserved cabbage soup, the braised beef Sichuan style noodle soup are all fabulous. Their soups are always crammed with vegetables and meat and noodles. Their non-soup dishes are also very good. The only thing lacking is more choices for appetizers. There isn't much besides the deep fried egg roll with mango which is yummy. The owners and the servers are lovely, friendly and welcoming, and the service is always outstanding.

Wonderful Seafood!. We had the most fabulous halibut ever! The service was great too, and the prices are reasonable. The kitchen has a big glass window, so you can watch the chefs hard at work. We will definitely come back.

One of the best Chinese restaurants in Victoria. They have almost no competition. The food is consistently good.

Sumptuous Soup. Walked by and stopped in for lunch. Had some of the best soup we've had anywhere. Hot and sour was well balancedand the Szechuan Shrimp was excellent. Great garlic flavor and the broth was subtle and tasty. The green onion cake is not to be missed.

Another delicious meal, reaffirming my opinion that this is the best Chinese food in town. Great way to ring in the new year. The Hunan Chicken with spicy black bean sauce is a taste bud tour de force. What makes this place so good is the use of fresh quality ingredients and recipes that seem more authentic than the standard issue westernized Chinese food served in Chinatown. JJ's dishes are much closer to the food we ate during our travels through Hong Kong or mainland China.

Food was great, very fresh and meat tender. However, they forgot to bring one of the dishes we ordered ( one of only four items so not like it was confusing!) the waitress never once came back to check on us and when we finally got her attention to bring the bill, the missed dish was on the charges! Needless to say, tip was very small! Good food, poor service! 5/10

BBQ DUCK. The bbq duck was soooooooo good!!<br/>can not wait to go next time~

Nice meal. Food was fresh and tasty with a lot of unique flavors. Really enjoyed the house chow mien. The open kitchen, with huge viewing windows, made the experience even better. I enjoyed watching the chefs at work.

Really fresh food but not what I expected. The servers were totally rude so I didn't tip which upset her even more! Food is decent but kind of overrated.

One of the best in town. Never disappointed when I visit this place, have tried many menu items over the course of the last 10 years. Daily lunch specials are also decent value.

Good menu . I had BBQ duck on noodles. Generous portion. Duck was moist, not greasy

It has the style of a common Chinese food restaurant that we all know and are familiar with. The food quality is above good. I did find that my food taste a little saltier than I would like (then again, it might have beene taste buds that night). I like their selection. The regular menu needs a little sprucing up. It seems to have a good following but it definitely more pricier than what you would expect. Same kind of meal found in Richmond or Vancouver would be generally half the price. For example, the BBQ pork fried rice lshould not cost more than $8 (tops in Van or Richmond) but $12??! Sorry, but the restaurant I found isn't as high end quality as you would get at a fancy Vancouver Downtown Hotel restaurant. It's not made out to be that way therefore I couldn't seem to justify the quantity and quality to be this overpriced. One caveat in their defense though could be the cost of food prices on the island comparative to the mainland. But it shouldn't be that justifiable with respect to price of rice as in my example. They must make a huge profit from the sale of fried rice (rice prices haven't gone that high up). I think they raised the prices across the board on their menu in retrospect because all the prices seem high for the quantity and quality of the food. I know this may be long but I guess I was shocked at my bill. I liked the restaurant's atmosphere as it reminded me of a typical local above average rest from the mainland. And, I'm just trying to find anything to steer me from the disappointment of the higher price and not giving jerky review. Rating: 4/6

Love this place!. When I walk in for lunch I'm always greeted like family, and the servers can usually tell by looking at me that I want the Spicy Ginger Chicken Noodle Soup, which is the best comfort food I can imagine! I've also had dinner here, and have had take out many times. It never fails to please.
Rob
Pretty good food, iffy service. Went on Friday night around 730. Food came very quickly. Ordered black been beef with noodles. The beef was good, but the noodles weren't much. The service was mechanical, but they don't even QC the food after they serve, or ask you if you would like a beverage, rather, they slam a teapot down and walk away. Water? you want a glass of water? That's the reply you get when you ask for a glass of water.
Urbanfan
Poor service, decent food.. We went for their dinner menu. The food is good, how can it not be- there's like 4 chefs cooking in one tiny kitchen. You can definitely feel the heat from the kitchen as you enter the restaurant. The serving is half full compare to the size of the plate, and they are extremely overpriced. The service staff are very choosy to whom they'll serve to. They will purposely attend to customers that worth their time. But however is the service, they definitely make sure to ask you for a tip before you leave, especially if you are using your credit card to pay. Be wary. Perhaps the tip is for the tea, they served as you take a seat. Your best bet is to just do take-outs.

Nice And Fresh.. Good tasty food, always fresh. Their lunch specials are a good deal, and usually a nice large portion. House tea is excellent. Staff are friendly and efficient.

Victorias best spring rolls!!
Ec
Wonton?. Wonton house? What wontons? There are only 2 kinds on the menu and they're crazy expensive. Horrible service, dingy place, overpriced. No good.
Eric
If it's available, get the Halibut dish. It's very good!

Back to basics. I like it. The basics of chinese food. Cant complain for a town that doesnt have a lot of authentic choice of chinese food. JJ always delivers but maybe at a steep price.
I Eat With Gusto
Worth a try.. Best springrolls in town. Peach and shrimp. mmmmmm
Tim
Fantastic fresh seafood restaurant! Tasty and authentic!

I'd also encourage ordering any veggie dish here as their freshness and perfectly cooked texture are wonderful. I'll definitely be going back.

I used to eat lunch at JJ around once every two weeks, but I can't remember why I stopped going there. The restaurant is popular, and if you come at the busiest times, you you will have to share one of the big tables (something I kind of enjoy, although m

wonton noodle soup is a thing of minimalist beauty, broth is refreshing, simple and devoid of the usual additives we've come to expect at most Chinese restaurants.
