Yes. We,re Eating Again.

Upon arrival downtown about midday, we sought out Tibetan Kitchen as it was featured on "You Gotta Eat Here" but more importantly as Tibetan food is not found on every corner. We were warmly welcomed by a member of the family who run this restaurant and who indeed are from Tibet. We started with Momo which are dumplings common to Tibet, Nepal and generally the Himalayan region. These were deep-fried and filled with tasty pork but there is a vegetarian option and you could have them steamed also. They were accompanied by a spicy sauce. Very nice! I was impressed with the number of vegetarian options here and asked if that was a Tibetan thing. The answer is not really. Tibet is a generally cold country and their diet is more meat-centric because of the limited growing season. They are, however, catering to Victoria's evidently extensive vegetarian community. Good thinking. We tried one of TB's several lunch specials, Pork Curry with mustard greens, served with rice, pooris and lentil soup which was frankly delicious! At $14 this is a very good deal. We loved the curry. Finally, we had Chicken Shepta. This was basically a stir fry on rice but Tibetan style (with a generous addition of veggies as previously discussed). Ginger, garlic, tomato paste, soy sauce and mild curry formed the sauce for this tasty and healthy dish.Colorful and busy is how I would describe the decor, with a distinctive nod to Tibet and the Dalai Lama. His words are posted here and there for our edification which is a good thing. Comfy enough and with friendly folks, we recommend this place. Expand your horizons and try something a little different.
I passed by this place several times always thinking how amazing Tibetan food must taste. The occasion came last Thursday during lunch time, that blackboard displaying "lamb curry" just pulled me in.
The place looks inviting, yeah it's a bit cozy but at least you can snoop into other ppl dishes while having second handed delicious smell (I was salivating the whole time).
I liked the decoration; the Dalai's Lama altar gives good energy. I noticed lots of ppl go eat there by themselves, loner power.
Food speaking: I'm a fan!
I had the lamb curry lunch that was accompanied with brown rice, a cup of lentil's soup, and those delicious breads. I burnt my tongue in desperation to eat that curry... It was worth! The dish was so aromatic. The flavours were terrific, there were plenty of lamb crumbs, the colour was beautiful, perfectly seasoned. All my senses got feed.
After that great meal, my hangover brain was tempting me last Saturday to go try one of the soups. I ordered a Thukpa with beef and egg noodles. Not only did I resuscitate, I was also happy and satisfied all day long. Ok, I also had pork momos. Both things met my high expectations and made me regret not eating there before.
I'm sure I'll go or order from them pretty soon (they are in SkipTheDishes).
I had the special one evening (chicken curry with sampler appetizers and dessert) and my wife had the pork curry with basaltic rice. It was excellent and not expensive. Server was very attentive and understanding of Celiac concerns. Would heartily recommend this delightful Cafe.
It's quite expensive but I love it! It was definitely one of the best dining experience I have ever had. The momos were pretty much the same with fried pot stickers I've had in Chinese restaurants-nothing special. The beef soup I had seemed very healthy, with a variety of fresh ingredients- it really satisfied my personal taste cuz it was not too tasteful, not salty at all but with good variety of veggies. A healthy and delicate dish just makes me happy! The poory (bread) was really delicious! I had the chai tea- it was perfect for someone like me who doesn't like drinks to be sweet. Just loved its delicate and mild taste. The dessert gulab jamun only consisted of two balls but it's exactly what I wanted cuz it was really tasty and at the same time not too much- no one wants a big dessert after a big meal :) I believe they use local/ organic ingredients here so things were pretty costly. However, I really enjoyed everything I had cuz they are of high quality! The decor and the music are really soothing and pleasant!
We came here for a quick bite before dinner as we've just arrived to Victoria.
The restaurant was actually closed but they forgot to turn off the sign and we walked in and they served us anyway.
We ordered the vegetarian curry platter to share. The curry was delicious with basmati rice. Portion was a bit small but delicious!
A true hidden gem! A small restaurant off the main tourist strip that is well worth a visit. The beef shepta (stir fry with veggies and rice) was excellent. The beef was excellent quality and the veggies were cooked but still crisp. I ordered it hot, which is not for the faint of heart, but I enjoy the heat, and this was definitely spicy, but also full of flavour. A mango lassi (think yogurt smoothie) was a perfect dessert, and also great to tame the heat. I'm definitely coming back.
This place maybe a bit pricey, but the food is definitely worth it! The momos are a must here if you are a dumpling fan. The curries are excellent as well!
A delight!. Have been wanting to try Tibetan Kitchen so jumped at the chance when Group-On available.
Small quiant restaurant with warm, friendly top-notch service. We walked in during busy dinner rush without a reservation so instead of turning us away or forcing us to crowd his entrance he took down our number and called us when table available about 10 minutes later - now that's a restaurant staffed with people who care about it's customers! For meal experience... excellent! Everything fresh, tasty and made in-house. Any of the appetizers are a must try especially momos. The curry is delicious and flavourful. Food definitely made with Tibetan love. Prices are not cheap especially when wanting to share a bunch of different dishes but you are paying for a uniquely memorable experience and food is authentic and handmade by Tibetan Chef Pemba. The cuisine is unlike anything I've ever tried (Asian meets Indian) and we will be back for more!
Shrimp curry and porries were delicious.. Service was attentive.,food was very good. My partner was in a bad mood before the meal, by the end she was sated and happy. Recommend.
This is hands down the best Indian food in town (no offense meant by just calling it Indian)! There is nothing run-of-the-mill about the food here. The menu is very different from other Indian restaurants so it is always a tasty adventure.
Why had I not been here before?. I am ashamed to say I am a local and after 8 years in Victoria (Thanks to Groupon) I found this little place in downtown. Now, it is one of my favourite places. I have tried several dishes and not once I have left disappointed. All food is made from scratch with natural and organic ingredients. The fusion of Indian, Tibetan and even Chinese cuisine is a very unique concept. Service is always good and the price of the food is consistent with the quality. Don't forget to get a dessert. They are very unique!
Comfortable environment, small and cozy. Food was very simple. The appies were way over priced. Vegetable curry was simple and tasty. Fried bread left an oily after taste in my mouth. Happy I went, great staff.....probably no second visit in my future.
Was expecting something more austere but was pleasantly surprised with the cozy atmosphere, interesting menu and great service. The flavours were unique blends of spices and the appies and deserts were tasty.
Delishhhhhhh. WEnt here on a groupon and loved it! The food was excellent and the service superb! Will certainly return!
Eat here. Finally had a chance to check this restaurant out. It's a small, cozy, nicely decorated restaurant. The service was great. Price is a little more on the expensive side of casual dining. We ordered a little bit of everything. My favorites were the momo dumplings and the chai tea (best I've tried). The curry dish was okay and so was the shepta. The gulab jamun was delicious! 100% better than the one at Spice Jammer.
Had dinner there the other day and was very impressed! Had the momo's as an appy. They were amazing and had a unique and insanely delicious dipping sauce. I'm craving them again already!
Good food, fast and attentive service.
One of our favourite restaurants in town. Love the curry! Everything tastes so homemade!! So fresh!
Great food, fair prices. Easy, central location in downtown Victoria. Food was great and staff very friendly - owned by husband and wife. Prices were fair, as were the portions. Only thing to note was not very spicy...so go for at least medium if not the hot.
Great food great staff Will definitely go back
Love this place!. Went there last nght with 13 friends! We had top-notch service from our waitress. The food was great too. Great atmosphere. Can't wait to go back!!
Wow!. My husband and I live in California, travel quite a bit and use our travels as a way to search out delicious out of the way eateries...and in finding the Tibetan Kitchen, we really feel like we struck gold! The staff was excellent, friendly and knowledgeable, the service, great. But the food! The lamb was utterly delicious, as was the mono served with it. We both decided we wished we lived closer, so that we could join them again and again! Great value and comfortable attractive decor...
Curtis gray. Fantastic cashew based curry. What a surprise. We are coming back often. Prepare to be amazed by the all natural food. Homemade pickles add heat and are outstanding.
Very Good. I have eaten here many times and have always come away happy. I usually order the momos and Sha-Palei but guests I am with have always been very happy with the various curries as well. I also like the fact I can order brown rice.
The best curry in town and the chef's thukpa is absolutely delish !! If you are in victoria , got to go to the little family run kitchen !!!
Holy Crap they are amazing! Great food, massive portions and super service!
Was on my way to another spot for lunch and their sign caught my eye. I am always a sucker for curry. Had the veggie curry on brown rice to go for $9.95. Super fast service and really good value. I will be returning next time I'm craving curry.
Always happy to find a Tibetan restaurant. We're suckers for momos, and can almost never find them anywhere. We ordered pork and veggie momos, steamed (much better this way). Both delicious, though the veggie ones (if you like fennel) were better. The lamb curry was good, though the portion of meat was rather small. The bread that came with the curry was excellent. The veggie Tibetan pita wrap thinger was tasty as well. What really made the meal authentic, though, was the amazingly friendly service. The waitress was great to talk to and had good menu suggestions. If you've ever had Tibetan food, I'm sure you'll be happy to find this place, and if you haven't, you should definitely make your way over and try it.
Excellent Food; Good Value. We've had lunch and dinner at the Tibetan Cafe several times now. The menu is not extensive, but concentrates on relatively few, well-made, dishes. It's by and large Indian, usually with 3 to 5 curries (usually chicken, salmon, beef, pork, vegetarian) to choose from, as well as various other dishes. You have a choice of white rice or flavouful basmati. Most dishes are seved with rich mini-naan or roti. The food is simply made, but very flavourful and very good. The staff are extremely friendly, efficient and seem to enjoy their work a great deal. Definitely not a place that is out for the come-once-only tourist trade but is there for Victorians. Highly recommended.
Good food. Went there a couple of days ago, tried the lamb curry, momos and the Septa. Everything was amazing, specially the bread served with the lamb was great. the indian dishes were authentic, only suggestion would be to add more tibetian dishes as the menu was heavily indian.
Wonderful food.. Wonderful Hospitality.. This review is long overdue. This small homey place made such an impression that I'm writing this review 5 months after our visit, Labor Day Weekend 2010. My wife, 2 kids (ages 9 and 5), and I were exhausted and hungry after a fun day of sightseeing in Victoria. We found this place by luck using the proximity search feature on the Urbanspoon iPhone app. It was late on a Sunday night and we got there just as they were closing, but the owner and her husband welcomed us warmly.
The food was fabulous - We all enjoyed it. I'm an omnivore, my wife is Vegetarian, and my kids are good eaters but sometimes balk at spicy food. There was something to please everyone and both of my kids kept saying "Yummy" including saying it to the chef/owner when she came our of the kitchen to make sure we were enjoying everything. Once she met us and asked us a few questions, she brought all sorts of "extra" things for us to try - each was wonderful. The Tibetan cuisine here is similar to Indian food (the owner is ethnically Tibetan but was raised in India and is "Indian" as well).
As for other details, it's tucked away on a quiet side street just a few blocks from the waterfront. The ambience is nice - cozy and clean. The owners were very gracious and chatted with me and my family well after the meal when they just could have easily ignored us so we woudl leave and they could close up.
Our family enjoys going out to eat. On this trip, we ate everything from street food to fine dining at the Empress. This was our most memorable and enjoyable meal of the trip. Try it. You have little to lose as it's inexpensive and you might enjoy it us as much as we did.
Alright. We had dinner here a couple of weeks ago, and I don't remember the exact dishes that we ate. We thought everything was good, but nothing was exceptional. I thought that the olive oil in the salad that came with the momos was an odd flavour.
The service was faily awkward. Our server was clearly new and couldn't answer the vast majority of our questions, which was disappointing since we were hoping to learn more about a cuisine that we were unfamiliar with. The other server, who seemed like he may be an owner, was very nice and funny. However, it felt like he was staring at us the entire time.
Good Chai. Have eaten there many times with a happy gluten free belly
Best Chai I have had outside of India. Wish the home made hot sauce recipe hadn't been changed, it was so good at the old location, but things have to change. Used to love the salmon curry, hope it returns to the menu some day. Recommend to bring your own salt as some menu items can be a bit bland and they don't have any on the table. Nice to see the restaurant doing so well!
Great Food! - You have to go!. In November 2010, I went to Tibetan Kitchen with my mother for lunch. Both myself and my mother ordered the butter chicken lunch special, which came to a reasonable $20 in total. The butter chicken was amazing with just the right amount of spices. The portions were also perfect for a lunch. I definitely plan to go again in the near future.
Love it!!. Amazing food (try the soup) and great service, Pemba and her team really make you feel at home!
Finally. Had lunch here for the first time, and was blown away by the quality, the service, and the price. The owner came out to tell me about her experiences in Nepal and India, served free chai tea, and created a very welcoming atmosphere. The butter chicken curry was spot on, and I will be back for more :)
Excellent. It's easy to tell when the owners/chef/staff take pride in their business, and this was obvious in every facet of our experience here. Fantastic meal from start to finish, we ordered twice as much as we intended when arriving, severely overate, and were barely able to hobble home, but it was worth it.
Everything served was clearly house-made, fresh, perfectly prepared, featured quality ingredients & ultimately was super tasty. We had the feature dinners - appy, salad, entry, desert, and all were delicious, and this is coming from someone known to be a grade-A professional complainer - not the easiest dinner to please.
Comfy place too, great vibe. An instant new favorite.
Excellent Food !!!. Being from India, we were in a search for a place serving authentic Indian food.We happened to try Tibetan Kitchen and to our surprise we had a wide range of Indian cuisine being served. We went for the Samosas, lamb, chicken curry with Rice/Puri.Felt like home :) .Great service too,
Highly recommended ....
The Indian Group
Love it. Used to go when it was a little stand in market square and wait in line for some delicious meals and of course the momo's. Glad to see she's got a full restaurant space now and did a good job with location and decor. Highly recommended!
Lovely place, wonderful service. The night we went in we were the only folks there. The owner chatted with us and was really nice, and when she came to take our order offered to cook us a little bit of everything, which is just what we wanted. We weren't disappointed. If you've never had Tibetan Cuisine before, it's like Nepalese, and quite like Northern Indian - curries, meat and spices. Definitely will go back.
The food and service were excellent. The price is outstanding. I will definitely be going back.
Fresh, wholesome, akin to a reliable home cooked meal. Good people, good service.
Returning after 10 years to find this charming eaterie is still very special. Wholesome, uniquely Tibetan foods. The curries combined with brown rice and small breads were both excellent. Thank you!
Love it, love it, love it! I have been a regular customer here for the last 5 years and came with different friends - we were never disappointed!
I love pork momos - so delicious!
Their meat is supplied by local island farms. All curries are cooked with cream of cashew, are gluten free an dairy free.
Nice calming atmosphere. Dalai Lama’ quotes on the walls are a very nice touch.
Next to a lot of parking spots - never had an issue.
The staff is always friendly and attentive.
will come back! delicious curry (plant based/cashew). excellent for vegetarian and vegan food, gluten free options. calming atmosphere. might be nice to have a bottle of water to top up glasses at the table :) friendly staff, won’t come by your table to ‘check in’ which i liked, just to serve/clear dishes
Tried calling to the restaurant to make an advance order before stopping by at noon; got answering machine stating closed dates for Dec 2021 🤯 which is weird for a first time customer in late Oct 2022? Didn't leave a message figuring it probably won't make too much of a difference. Not going to bother with delivery services as nowadays it costs way more to use them when my temp job is one block away.
Came in, server is quite prompt taking my order as soon as she took orders from customers before me which is fair. Food came in reasonable time considering it looks like one server & one cook in the establishment. I could have done takeout but like the unique ambiance of the place & wanted to try a dine in lunch experience.
Lunch lamb curry was amazing, packed a delicious punch in flavor. Medium spice heat I ordered is quite up there & was close to my level limit; wondered how spicy hot is?
(I'm laughing mentally because my ex-boyfriend with absolute zero heat tolerance would not thrive unless the restaurant offers a zero heat option?) On a serious note, if anyone has a severe lack of spicy heat tolerance, please triple check with the server upon ordering.
Server was free enough to walk around with a water pitcher but never stopped by to check upon me for first taste or anything else. 😭 Did tell her when I walked to the till to get my bill to pay about compliments to the chef & my gratitude for the tasty & filling meal that was obviously made with humble TLC.
The meal is a real winner, good value, & the spice did well to clear my nasal congestion & nagging post-common cold cough. Definitely will become my go to lunch spot whenever I neglect to pack a filling meal to work & will recommend for dinners too.
When we just got to the restaurant, there are only a table with 2 guests there. Then the place got busy quickly. I’m not a big fan of curries but the curries here are just different and so so good, probably the best. We had pork momos, lamb and shrimp curry, all were tasty. Service is friendly but a bit slow and not very attentive. I also like the atmosphere and the decoration of the restaurant.
Service: impeccable and timely
Menu: easy to navigate;
Vegan and Vegetarian and Gluten free options available!!!!
Hooray!!!!
And delicious!
Portions: sizeable enough that plate prices yield good value for money
VERY impressed with the veggie stir-fry!
Impressed with the Momos!
Atmosphere in restaurant is comfortable / relaxed.
If a person is dining in, the space features photography; historical and cultural information on Tibet; wrapped inTibetan decor.
Our plates were flavourful, hot and steamy and enjoyable.
We enjoyed visiting on a Tuesday at the lunch - hour.
We will be back, and we recommend.
Absolutely wonderful service. Delicious food and good sized portions. Our server was very kind and explained the different dishes to us. Thank you so much for the wonderful meal.
I really enjoyed this place. Very authentic, with a nice family run vibe. Food was healthy and delicious, plus the little buns served with the dish were exceptional.
Well worth a visit
This place has some of the best food in Victoria. Tibetan food is like a mix between Indian and Chinese with the best flavours of them all. Executed perfectly at the Tibetan kitchen cafe. The portions are also massive, amazing value for money.
Photos are of the pakoras, beef Momo's, and lamb curry. Everything is made from scratch in house.
🥣 They have delicious Momos (Steamed/fried) and the chutney is my favourite.
😆 That's all what I always have from here. It's best to go and have the momos in the Cafe as they usually don't stay fresh while ordering home.
🌟 The Cafe has a beautiful decor and the vibes are amazing!
🤔 But sometimes it does feel very suffocating and humid inside.
🌟🌟 Rooting for Momos !!
Authentic Tibetan restaurant. If you are someone like me who loves Spicy noodles, mom's, sweet Gulab Jamun and more, then give this restaurant a try. Staff is super cooperative and exemplary in service. Wait time is less too. Soothing ambience and Tibetan music that's calming. I love this place and highly recommend.
Decent food. We had Vegetable Momo and Mix Vegetable Curry. The curry comes with a side of rice, 2 poori and lentil soup. The curry was tasty and so was the soup. The momo felt a little bland and we needed an extra serving of the hot sauce along.
Awesome little gem, I have no idea how I missed this place for so long! I had the vegetarian curry, very tasty and plentiful!! The atmosphere is super chill, love it!
I love this restaurant. The food is delicious, well prepared and the ingredients are locally sourced. The atmosphere is calm and relaxing; the staff are kind and helpful. I love all the Buddhist quotes on the wall.
Food was delicious. We had Momos, the handmade noodle soup, and the lamb curry. Our children loved it too.
We dined in to get the pork momos. There was a weird loud buzzing noise throughout the restaurant - not the end of the world but it was a bit off-putting. The lady gave us a good service but didn’t seem that keen to have us around. The momos were delicious - juicy and fatty! But, they didn’t have enough flavour in my opinion. They just tasted like pork dumplings, not like Tibetan momos. Overall, I wasn’t overwhelmingly satisfied with the experience.
Prepare to be dazzled by the unforgettable experience at the Tibetan Kitchen Cafe! From the moment you step foot inside, you'll be transported to the enchanting streets of Lhasa. The alluring aromas and authentic flavors will awaken your senses and evoke cherished memories of Tibetan cuisine.
The culinary journey begins with a symphony of flavors that dance harmoniously on your palate. Each dish is a masterpiece, carefully crafted to capture the essence of traditional Tibetan fare. I haven't encountered such delectable Tibetan food that closely resembles what you'd savor within the country itself. It's a true culinary revelation!
But hold on, it gets even better! The exceptional service provided by the wait staff adds an extra touch of brilliance to the entire experience. During our visit for a delightful lunch, my dining companion, who was new to Tibetan cuisine, was guided through the menu with such grace and expertise. The attentive server patiently explained each dish, ensuring he made an educated selection that perfectly suited his preferences.
The lamb curry was a revelation - an explosion of flavors that left us craving for more. In fact, my dining companion enjoyed it so much that he couldn't resist requesting a second bowl of rice to savor every last drop of the exquisite sauce.
As for my choice, the Tiger Prawn Shaptak, it was a divine revelation. Each succulent prawn was generously coated in a tantalizing blend of spices that delighted my taste buds with every single bite. The dish was an impeccable balance of bold and harmonious flavors.
While we didn't try the various flavored momos ourselves, we couldn't help but notice the blissful expressions on the faces of fellow diners as they savored these delicate treats. Their joyous reactions were a testament to the sheer magnificence of Tibetan Kitchen Cafe's culinary offerings.
If you crave a thrilling dining adventure with a spicy foreign flare, Tibetan Kitchen Cafe is an absolute must-visit destination. The authenticity, warmth, and richness of the experience will leave you with lasting memories and a desire to return for more. So don't hesitate - embark on this gastronomic voyage and be enchanted by the magic of Tibetan cuisine.
Nice for a change. I don’t recall eating here recently so we popped in for lunch. Interesting menu. I had the vegetarian Shapta. First taste is great!
The BEST dumplings ever (gotta get the Pork Momo). So fresh and delicious. Can't stop going back
