Review The Phoenix Steakhouse - Vernon

Came here for our wedding anniversary dinner. Such wonderful and friendly service! We loved the food and also had some great wine pairings thanks to the suggestion of our server (see pics for description of dishes). Cozy atmosphere as well! Definitely impressed with this place and would come again!

When my eldest daughter came to visit me from Alberta I wanted to take her to a fine restaurant, but I had no idea which one. First I had to decide what type of cuisine I wanted, and obviously ended up opting for steak. Naturally, like many others, I checked out the reviews first. There was enough positive feedback to convince me that Phoenix was worth checking out. I am certainly glad I did. My daughter and I had a wonderful time. Warm and welcoming decor, relaxing atmosphere, friendly and efficient staff, mouth-watering food and reasonable prices. (I'm getting hungry again just at the memory lol). Steak was incredibly tender, baked potato delicious, appetizers superb, fine wine... Thank you Phoenix owner and staff, a memorable evening indeed!

The outside seating is very cute. Nice staff. The mussels were a little bland but good otherwise. The cauliflower steak was a good vegetarian option.

Regrettably, underwhemling on our thursday night visit. We arrived bit early for reservation and were offered a seat at the bar till our table was ready for drinks with "Vernons best bartender". Drinks were ok, watermelon margarita was one of the specials. Most of the fun sitting at the bar (we were the only seats) is friendly banter with the bartender or even a bit of a show to watch while slinging bottles and mixin, even when they are busy. Not today Appetizers were ok , no great flavors from either the calamari or the cheese soaked escargot. Dinner was hosted by a very friendly server and her service was the high point. Steak and lobster, steak ok, lobster dried out, warm clarified butter was sent back for more lukewarm. All mains lacked a flavor we were looking forward to. Givin some of the reviews and recommendations from locals. All the meals were just ordinary, bourbon mushroom sirloin, Madagascar pepper striploin, seafood spaghettini. No desert tried Nice space on the patio, no views but done up nicly. Service for dinner well done, bar service needed some help on our visit. Not a cheap dinner out at well over $400.00 for 4. We were hoping for more, maybe tough to get back for a second try..........

Sooo good! Went on a whim for a nice dinner. Didn't have a reservation so had to sit at the bar but it was still a lovely experience. The atmosphere was great, it was so nice that the tv's were off, and it was classy and relaxed. Had an amazing gin and sparkling wine cocktail. The bartender was attentive and friendly but not intrusive. We got the stuffed mini yorkies as an appetizer and felt that these were the best we had ever had. I had the Hunter Chicken and my husband had the Burger (on Happy Hour deal) and they were both delicious. Then we ended off with a creme brulle and a crunch bar dessert. Everything was satisfying, delightful, and scrumptious. I definitely recommend Phoenix Steakhouse, and we will for sure be back!

The best steak I've had since moving to BC. The food was fabulous, the drinks were top notch and the atmosphere was lovely. Highly recommend the Oscar Sirloin.

I can not say enough about how great this place is or how hard these owners have worked to stay open and keep their customers and staff safe these past 2 years and we are grateful! We just had another wonderful meal this evening. If we want something that doesn't break the bank, we go during Happy Hour. If we're celebrating we go for their delicious steaks and seafood. They have a diverse menu and every single bite is perfect! Service is outstanding... Friendly and accommodating. I'm not kidding! Try the Pheonix next time you want a special meal

We dropped in here randomly on a downtown walk getting familiar with our new home town of Vernon. It was a good idea. The Madagascar Peppercorn steak was great. I ordered it medium and it was a bit overcooked for my preference but was forgivable as my partners was also very consistent with my own. I'd suggest ordering Medium Rare. More of a cocktail then a craft beer place.

Very disappointing experience. Beautiful venue and prices to match but the food does not hold up. I expected something special for a $38 New York steak at a place that calls itself a steakhouse. The presentation and cut of meat were not up to the standards you'd expect from such a place. They don't even know how to cook a steak to medium (apparently medium-rare is close enough). The rest of the plate was equally unimaginative in both presentation and quality of the recipes. I really wanted to like this place! Please don't waste your time.

This is still my favorite restaurant in Vernon. Although in recent years I have found the quality to have taken a dive from a solid 5 down to my current 4. I still find it worth the visit every time I am in town. I have yet to find a restaurant quite like this anywhere else. When my friends or family ask me to describe it, I tell them imagine the Keg, but better, and without those ridiculous Keg prices or line ups. Deserts are still top notch, and you can tell they are either made in restaurant or locally sourced. None of those generic food service deserts other places may serve.

Fantastic Restaurant. Fantastic restaurant! I've ordered a variety of items from the menu and have enjoyed each immensely. Friendly staff, beautiful decor, great location and an wonderful variety of flavourful dishes. I've loved the Grilled Vegetable Bruchetta, Bangkok Bowl, Salmon Newburg, Black & White Ahi Tuna, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, and the Mushroom Burger. I am looking forward to enjoying my next delectable meal. Have dined in the main floor area and upstairs, next time will try the patio. Truly delightful dining!

On the fence with this one. I think it has so much potential an my experience didn't meet up with my expectations. It come across as an upscale steak house but as you enter it has more of a community dining feel and appearance. I had to go with dislike on this one as there were more cons than pros. Appearance aside we walked up stairs it appeared a little more cozy by had to sit downstairs again it felt as if we should all be sitting and eating at one large table in the middle of the room i was there with my wife on a romantic dinner But in this large room it never feels like you're alone no real intimacy we ordered my wife tried the lobster bisque against my better judgement lol and she regretted it (I have 20 plus years operations/exec I'm food industry) bisque was like warm and grainy almost like an instant powder I has never tried Yorkshire pudding (from Texas ) I ordered what I received was a spongy chewy dry peice of bread. You tell me is that Yorkshire pudding? If so I'll pass also ordered prime rib waitress said it was med rare I found it closer to med/ med well. The potatoes were ok as was the gravy on the potatoes only and I received two small pieces of roasted pepper as my veg. For a $150 dollar tab I would expect just a little more. Like I said though under the right management with the right vision i see potential in it. Bi as it is now have to say I can't in good conscience recommend it

Me and my boyfriend went for our anniversary and we got steak. The steak was amazing, perfectly cooked and tasted great. Our waitress was a medium height, browny orangy hair, and provided excellent service! Awesome place, we will definitely be back!

What a hate more than anything is restaurants that come off as being hi class, with smoke and mirrors, then drop the ball completely with service and food. Overpriced mediocre food, and slooooow service! Shame on you!

Mediocre to poor food ultra premium price. As I said poor food no one seems to care when a large hungry man hardly touches his $32 plate of beef just BAD Vernon doesn't have a decent steakhouse I wish it did these people think they are the keg but denny's outshines them very sad

Super yummy!!! A perfect date night!. We moved to Vernon at the beginning of June and have been looking for a classy place to eat with great food, great service, and a great atmosphere--and this is the place!! The food is amazing with surprisingly large portion sizes. Compared to Milestones or Earls this place has a great menu with better prices. The Lobster Poutine is off-the-hook! We loved the upstairs outdoor patio and the service was really great. Thanks for a great date night! We'll be back soon!

Fantastic atmosphere!. My sister and I are visiting from Winnipeg and wanted a nice steakhouse to enjoy the evening. Our brother had visited before and recommended this restaurant. We were greeted outside by the most friendliest staff and promptly escorted to the bar. The interior was amazing. Warm, trendy and well lit. We had the pleasure of meeting some of the owners, who were so down to earth! Young families putting their heart and soul in it. Outdoor patio was cozy. Food was great! Staff very friendly. Next we are in town, we will be going back! Highly recommend this restaurant.

Best restaurant in town - loved it!. Such a beautiful interior, the patio is the perfect summer location. Wide variety of food, and I must say the steaks were AMAZING! I have often had poor experience with steaks when it comes to eating out but the Phoenix grilled them to perfection! Really great selection of appetizers as well. Great service, very friendly staff. Overall a wonderful atmosphere. Will most definitely be returning!

This is definitely one of the best restaurant's in town. I have come here numerous times over the past few years and have always been very satisfied. The food is amazing and the customer service ranks in some if the highest I have experienced. Always look forward to my next return!

Very Good. I had dinner last night at the Phoenix, the wine was great, the NY steak very good, the service prompt and friendly, not the best but certainly very good and good value,

Late steak slow service. My husband and I recently went to the phoenix for our date night out and were shocked at how bad this place had gotten. It used to good, have excellent service, and top notch food. I ordered brushetta for an appy then, surf and turf for dinner. My steak was served to me well I was still eating the appy, and then the steak was cooked blue when I ordered it medium. I was not impressed, then when I sent it back they just cooked the same steak further after it had rested so when it came back to me it was tougher then my leather shoe. This was a $160 dinner (no tip-the service was poor at best) that will not be repeated!!!!!

Stair way from hell. I honestly feel terrible for the girls that work there having to climb that to run food. drink specials are good but the menu is a little boring and could use a tune up

Not bad at all. Visiting from Australia I dropped in for a feed with the boys from Kal Tire. The food was superb, the service... maybe it's a little slow but there was 15 of us, and the quality of food certainly out weighed the wait.

The service was good... just not fast... who cares right :-)

I would be back for sure

Slow Service. We had reservations for lunch and when we arrived I informed the server that I was on a lunch hour so time was important and I would order the special so it was quicker. Our lunch arrived so late that I had 10 minutes to eat it before heading back to work. I attempted to contact the server but she was too busy with another table to pay us any attention. When I phoned to complain to the manager she just said that they were busy at lunch - no apology or anything just excuses! Needless to say I won't be going back.

Mediocre Food and Service. Rating 3 out of 10

Greeting - Poor, we had a reservation and the server could not find it and argued with another server
over the reservation book and then told us to take the table that was set up. Very unprofessional.

We were not welcomed to the restaurant or greeted in any way.

Table set up - Poor, no candle, no decor just napkins silverware and salt and pepper.
Decor was fine, nothing to write home about but dark and comfortable.

Greeting from server - told us her name and asked if we want to know the specials. No energy,
No personality. Menus were coffee marked and not clean.

Cocktails - Ice, alcohol, glass - that is it, no attempt to garnish or anything special about the drinks.

No Cocktail napkins given with beverages and server did not use a tray carried our drinks in her hands, very unprofessional.

Server took our order like a robot, no comments, no suggestions, no information about the food.

Appetizers - fine, nothing special, over priced for what we got. 6 coconut shrimp

$12.50 is way over priced. This item would have been fair value at $8.95. No imagination on the plate at all. Calamari similar comments, over priced for portion, no imagination on the plate, nothing special, an no lemon served with the calamari.

Entrees' way over priced $27.00 for a 9 ounce Rib-eye (that was 6.5 ounces) served with a baked potato and a small salad, this menu item should have been priced at $21.00. Quality wasn't there, presentation wasn't there and value wasn't there. Baked potato was hot and cooked perfectly but there was no butter on it, Salad was tasty, Rib-eye was over done and just a piece of meat nothing special.

Chicken Curry, price was reasonable, chicken portion was small but the meal was enough to eat. Curry looked like grey glop but tasted okay.

Dessert, Brownie was so dry it was impossible to eat and the Creme Brule was quite good. Coffee hot and fresh.

Server Notes:

Took our dirty forks off our appy plates and placed them on our clean napkins to use to eat our entree.

Placed dessert spoons on dirty table without a clean napkin.

Carried pepper mill right under her bare arm pit.

No hello - No goodbye - No thank you - No personality at all.

When we left no one said good night, come again.

Summary, Over priced restaurant with mediocre service and food quality.

Very good. We went here for the 1st time because I won a voucher, I had heard good things but also that it was expensive.

Since we had a voucher we decided to go all out and order whatever we wanted.

I had a 6oz sirloin with seafood oscar (mixed seafood in a cream sauce on top of the steak) with the Lobster bisque and tomato salad as sides. The steak was cooked beautifully and was tender and delicious as was the seafood topping, the bisque was delicious but I was expecting pieces of lobster in it and there was none, it was blended smooth and was missing texture, but the flavour was fantastic. The tomato salad was good, with goat cheese red onion and a balsamic type dressing, but was served as thick tomatoe slices in a little bowl which made it very difficult to cut and eat.

My Fiance had the 8oz lamb sirloin with the bisque and yam fries. He really enjoyed the lamb although I found it to be a little boring for my tastes but his yam fries were amazing! crispy and hot and the aioli they served with it was really good.

We had escargot as an appie which was delicious but nothing special...I have rarely had bad escargot as its hard to mess it up when coated in garlic butter and cheese!

I had the desert trio afterwards, the cheesecake was rich and creamy and delicious(and I normally dont like cheesecake). The tripple chocolate brownie was cheewy and chocolatey but when I ran out of vanilla icecream to help make it smooth I found it was too thick by itself and didnt finish it. The expresso icecream cake with oreo crust was also delicious and my favourite of the three with bright bold expresso flavour!

All in all we will definately go back, but only on special occasions as it is too expensive to just drop in for a steak any old time. One appy, one 1/2L house red, 2 entrees and one desert came to just over $100.

The atmosphere was also really nice and the service was also quite good.

I had heard mixed reviews and we decided to try it for New Years Eve. We did have a larger party so of course I don't mind being patient however the service was not good. I had to ask for a glass of water 3 times and finally hunted down the waitress behind the bar for it. It took over 1.5 hours for our dinner to come. When it did my meal was good (rib eye steak) but my fiancee had the lobster which was more like a crayfish!! Very very small and for almost $30 it was not worth it. The atmosphere was beautiful though.

Meh.. Our first time at the Phoenix, though we've lived in town for years and years, we'd always heard things about the great food and atmosphere, so I was interested to see what the fuss was about. We went upstairs to "Level II" which is the same menu. The stair case to get upstairs is steep, and the steps are narrow. The atmosphere and decor are fabulous - we loved the distressed brick, and the windows overlooking the street. Our server was amazing - quite on the ball - and ready with the specials, recommendations, and answers to our questions. The menu was extensive and impressive - However, the food, I must say, was quite disappointing - I was not impressed. The crab cakes were quite good, and the sauce served with them had a nice kick to it (though they don't tell you about it on the menu, so if you aren't expecting spicy - it comes as a shock). Someone in our party had the Wasabi Tuna salad, and though the tuna and the salad dressing were quite nice - I have rarely seen tuna so thouroughly cooked at a restaurant - normally chef's choice is to flash sear both sides and serve - this tuna was so thouroughly cooked that it would definitely not be swimming off the plate anytime soon... and the salad could have done without the snap peas - they didn't compliment the dish at all.My main was the 8oz Top Sirloin - medium rare. It cooked to a perfect medium rare, and the mushroom sauce was a nice touch- though the steak itself was bland and disappointing. With your main you have a choice of sides - the pasta alfredo was too heavy on the nutmeg - and my house salad - I could have done without the pumpkin seeds and cranberries and would have opted instead for a plain tossed garden salad.

Been better. The pheonix has gotten away from its stellar food and seems to have invested heavily in the atmosphere. Get back to the food guys you make good stuff!
