Reviews La Taquizza

La Taquizza could be the best Mexican restaurant in Canada. I say “could be” because my sample size includes Taco Bell, Taco Time, Taco Delmar, and a place in Prince George better than the others I mentioned (despite the bar being set pretty low). But I dare any place to be better. Full disclosure, I was in Toronto for a tech symposium. Two hundred of us rode in antique school busses like refugees from Kosovo, eventually finding ourselves near Vaughn Mills. The organizers found it appropriate to pile us into a bowling alley and hand us alcohol. It had a buffet, but after perusing its depressing selection, I found every excuse to leave and locate an alternative. After only a few minutes, I found this jewel, and despite finding other I`m sure worthwhile alternatives, I couldn’t keep that one out of my head…more because of a misunderstanding I had with the name. You see, the full name on the sign read, “La Taquizza – Mexican Flavour at its Best”. Here`s the thing: the name “La Taquizza” is obscured within a funky logo which, from fifty feet away, resembles oddly enough laundry, and the words ``at its Best`` are not only in a different, smaller font, they’re blocked behind pillars built with the intent of mimicking a more ethnic fascia. The result, I thought the actual name of the restaurant was “Mexican Flavour”. …there`s nothing I can add that will make that sound funnier. “Well, when you’re in the mood for flavour, it better be Mexican.” You see, I added eleven words to that joke and it still didn`t get any funnier. No matter what other options I had, nothing had a leg up on “Mexican Flavour” (I even use air quotes when saying that aloud), even that Chinese place called Szechuan Szechuan—the place so obviously mediocre, they named its boring cuisine twice. Every time I say “Mexican Flavor”, I want to put a flourish on it, like waving my hand slowly across the sky like a marque. Try it, “Mexican…Flavour.” But it’s called La Taquizza, so let`s move on. This restaurant is gorgeous. It’s not what a Mexican restaurant looks like in Mexico. It’s not what a Mexican restaurant looks like in Southern California. It’s what a Mexican restaurant looks like in a Fast and the Furious film. I kept expecting Toretto and a Paul Walker body double to walk in (oh, I made myself feel bad). I can`t help but tap my feet to the new age Latino music drumming from the speakers. The cute waitress made a point to “warn” me about the cuisine, claiming that La Taquizza was owned by a Mexican family and as such, offers more authentic cuisine, and that I should read the entries in full so I know what I’m getting into. It was like a salesman warning me about buying a Ferrari because they have a tendency of getting their driver’s laid—that’s how awesome this conversation was. She had no idea how much I fell in love with this place based on what she said. And I have never been more swept up in a menu either. The dishes were all described in exquisite detail. I was getting hungrier each page I turned. My stomach was going crazy and I was about five minutes from just ingesting the menu. Untranslated Mexican names loomed over color descriptions embellished with words of tradition and historical origins. I’d order the entire damned menu if I could. Eventually I settled into sopes de chorizo (“little cravings served with refried beans, our home made chorizo, fresh cheese and onions”) and tacos de chilorio (“slow-roasted pork marinated with onion and chili sauce”). If I was to make one suggestion before returning to the acclaim, it would be to offer half portions. Everything on this menu appears designed for sharing. There were three tortillas and three tacos, and if there were three of me, we would’ve ordered three more. If there were half orders (two or even one per serving), I’d have kept ordering and maybe even topped the whole thing with a dessert. It could be the closest thing to Mexican tapas (hey, there’s an idea!). Alas, despite it being, as said, the best Mexican food I’ve had in my short life, I couldn’t handle more than two dishes. That, along with the sangria I ordered, came to a reasonable $30 with tip. I wanted to fit in the tres leches cake. The waitress actually said, “Cake of 3 milks,” but I knew what she was talking about. I even tried to go for a walk and squeeze in some room, maybe visit the bathroom for a bowel movement—maybe that would help. No luck. If I could, I would have gone back the next day just for the cake. They didn’t offer a half-order for that either. I asked. I returned to the bowling alley and quietly gloated over the empty buffet platters that once held dried hot wings and flat pizza. Then I found the complimentary ice cream…so I had three scoops. I’m sorry! I’m weak!! Food: 4/5 Service: 4/5 Presentation: 3/5 Value: 5/5 Recommendation: 4/5

The Totopos Con Guacamole was fresh home made guacamole served with cantina style tortilla chips. It was a really big platter of tortilla chips served on a foil wrapper. My first impression was that I wished the tortilla chips were warm but that the guacamole was really tasty. However, as I continued eating, I really enjoyed this appetizer. I enjoyed the very crispy tortilla chips especially and how it was such a generous platter of chips.

TRULY MEXICAN. This place is very Mexican. The ambience is good. I liked the Spanish songs that played in the restaurant. The quantity was ample. (Had to get a take out container for my fajita) Prices decent. Try their churros. Very delicious. Lots of vegetarian options.

Authentic Mexican food made from scratch with clean decor, great ambiance, good service and well priced. Could not stop eating the homemade nachos, guacamole, mild salsa paired with sangria. Had to take the fish tacos to go. The servers Steve and Sarah were pleasant and professional. This is a great culinary experience for foodies!

The menu is decently rich. I've been here twice by now and both the time for taste was awesome. The salasas available makes the difference and actually defines the food you order. Espacially tacos and qusidilas. Plus it has other dishes from Mexico that usually I've not seen in other mexican restaurants such as Three Amigos etc. Which actually gives an edge to this place over others.
Absolutely loved their salsas and the food. Portion is decent and stomatch filling. Price is mid range. Typically $30-40 for two.

First time visiting here and had a 5 star experience all around. The server (blonde girl) was an absolute sweetheart and was very quick and attentive. The food was to die for. I ordered the enchiladas suizas, a massive plate of food, and managed to devour it all without any problems! I really like the buffet style salsa station, as their salsas are so good I came back for a refill three times. Overall, great experience and I'll be coming back again soon.

Wow such a great find. I always say that there's a lack of special places to eat in the Vaughan area and now I've found one that I'm proud to recommend :)

La Taquizza is hidden in the Vaughan Mills plaza but always full of people eating happily. I would describe it as the ideal family friendly spot to get awesome Mexican cuisine. They had a salsa bar with lots of delicious choices to personalize your dishes. We had the guacamole and chips, pretty good but i wish the chips were warm. Then we had the chicken quesadillas and pork tacos. I wish the tacos had a yogurt sauce or something to add a bit more texture but the pork inside was really good. The beans that came on the side of the tacos were absolutely delicious and I'm of usually a beans type of girl. The quesadillas came with a really delicious whipped sour cream and were bursting with cheese. I also had a glass of red sangria that tasted exactly how sangria should :)

La Taquizza had a full house this evening, and there were a couple of minor service issues. However, the food was very good.

One thing that this restaurant does a bit differently than other Mexican places is that they serve many of their entrees "naked". They have a salsa bar, where patrons can go get four different salsas (mild, medium, hot, very hot) to dress up their nacho chips or their meals.

I chose the Burrito with Grilled Chicken, with a side salad. The servers brought soup instead, twice, until they finally brought the salad. The burrito was fresh and flavourful, including lime-infused rice.

SWMBO loves enchiladas and selected the Poblano Mole; dark, smokey, with pleasant chocolate overtones.

Really good Mexican food!. I really enjoyed this Mexican place up in Vaughan a lot! I went early afternoon and it was not busy at all. I haven't tried a lot of Mexican food places in Toronto yet but my friend took me here and totally recommend it to me. I LOVE IT! The price was so reasonable and the servings were great! I was so full after one dish and I walked starving! Also, great service there too! Since it was my first time, the nice waitress walked me through the complimentary sauce table and helped me to choose what to eat. Nice and clean place and definitely will go again!! :)

Great family run restaurant with a great selection of family recipes. I started with Sopa Asteca and followed by Barrilla. Both were excellent and flavorful. They have a salsa bar ranging from mild to hot, every one I tried was excellent, some of the best I have ever tasted. I highly recommend this quaint restaurant. I will be back.

Good Food. I've been wanting to try this place for a while now and finally did. The owner was incredibly nice and so were the servers. I got the enhciladas de mole poblano and the bf got the tostadas con carne asada. Both dishes came with a bit of rice but mine also came with beans. We're definitely happy that we finally tried this place out. Food and service was great, we'll be going again to try other dishes. Highly recommend trying out this little place :)

Good food!. I heard about this restaurant about a year ago but since i'm Mexican and know how to prepare very authentic stuff I never bother going and just push it to some other occasion. About a week ago a gringo friend recommended it again and invited a few other guys and head there, the only reason why i went was because the guy was drooling while he was describing the "Sopa Azteca" and because he said that the waitress looks like my wife. So i head there cause i wanted to confirm this.
Food is really good, i recommend it 100%, portion size is very generous, guacamole is great, is similar taste of what i would get if i go to my grandma's for lunch and the salsas are amazing, just be careful as some might be a little spicy. Service and environment are very good as well.
And my wife doesn't look like the waitress i guess for gringos all Mexicans Look the Same :).
I only wish there was another location closer to home.

Super fresh!!. This has to be one of the best values around for traditional Mexican food. It's always fresh, my kids love the guacamole (though they do find the pico di gallo a bit too seasoned for their tastes), and their traditional Mexican coffee is a mind bending experience.

This is THE place for authentic Mexican!!!. I have dined here several times (from Oakville) and can't say enough about it. It started off very good and keeps getting better and better....The owner, Hector, is a consummate professional and with his mother as head chef, it just doesn't get more authentic Mexican than this. My wife and I and 2-year-old just dined here again today (Feb. 12). The new menu is awesome! We had the Azteca soup, the baby greens salad (with apple, red pepper and honey mustard dressing), the Tampiquena (my personal favourite), tortilla chips and guacamole (the guac is to die for!!), the three milks cake and the Mexican coffee....EVERYTHING was excellent!....as usual. We'll be back.

La Taquizza Vaughan, located just north of Vaughan Mills shopping mall serves up the best selection of Mexican dishes in town. La Taquizza serves up just about everything that you can think of that entails Mexican food. Starting with breakfast dishes (note: they open at 11:30) you can get Huevos(eggs) in various different forms. You can get them con carne or con corzio, that is, with steak or Mexican sausage respectively, and the most famous dish is the Huevos Rancheros, which is two sunny side up eggs covered in red salsa.

For appetizers you can get lots of different dishes, including your basic nachos with some dips on the side, and much more. They also have soups and salads available. The main dishes are almost endless. There are so many choices that all sound delicious. They have enchiladas, burritos, flautas, huraches, tacos, fajitas and more. They also have some simple dishes for the kids, so everyone can enjoy! And of course, they have a nice selection of Mexican cocktails, including four choices of Mexican Beer, many margarita’s and of course 16 choices of tequila, including silver, gold, reposado and anejo. So come in and enjoy a Mexican feast fit for all, including vegetarians! ¡Buen provecho!
