The general public is similar to the eatery if you know the place. The general public is a sushi bar like no other. They offer a new spin on your traditional sushi rolls so expect quite the flavorful bite with each of your orders. My favorites are the black sesame tuna, the red ninja roll, and salmon run roll. Don't let the fun things on the menu intimidate you though because they also have traditional items too like curry
Funky sushi joint on Main. Lots of cool stuff to see on the walls, but not a place for you if you want an authentic Japanese atmosphere. Huge list of choices (a little overwhelming). Sushi and sashimi were fresh and tasty. A good place for groups with platter options.
The food is great here and so are the drinks. But last time I was there I got a too cool for school server who was bad. She talked to the other servers the whole time instead of helping us. But all the other times I have been the service was great.
Meal: The Ring of Fire platter (yes, we ordered it), Cider on special, and mason jar of coconut-lime mojito. . Service: Almost too good, like checked in way too often. Atmosphere: Loud, inside was a bit warm but decorated with crazy stuff. We sat outside on the patio which was nice, but Main St. is a bit loud.
○good service
○decent food/ they serve Japanese cuisine but from first glance it doesn't look like a Japanese style food
○good selections of drinks/ alcohol
○average price
○very loud/ not suitable for children
○would I go back? Maybe
Quite loud, but a decent DJ kept the music chill enough that it didn't become deafening like some places. Decor is insane and makes no sense, but I suspect that's the point.
My group had the scallops, pork gyoza, takoyaki, tempura chicken donburi, dragon roll, Japanese fortress, and tuna tataki. All was tasty and very reasonably priced. The scallops were cooked perfectly and the sauces were delightful, but I did find the portion size quite small, even for a scallop appetizer. All the other portion sizes were just fine.
We waited quite a while for a drink refill at one point (upwards of 15 minutes) but this was around 8pm on a Saturday night when they were super busy. Still, the service could have been a bit friendlier.
All in all, a great place and I'd happily come back again.
It was actually my first time attending a Zomato event and I had a really great time meeting new people and chilling at this really cool place! It’s a lot like The Eatery. The decor is kind of weird and dark but cool at the same time. It’s definitely a hip place to go to just to chill out and have drinks.
Went to The General Public for a Zomato meetup and I must say, it was a really wonderful experience! It was my first time here and I had such a great time meeting other foodies and chatting over yummy food and drinks. It's very similar to The Eatery that's on the way to UBC and I think it's owned by the same people. Highlights of the night were the sake bomb demos (yaaass) and the wide variety of sushi rolls! They specialize in fusion sushi so their rolls are not the traditional ones that you would find in a regular sushi place. I also really liked the Fat Elvis. It was an avocado tempura topped with tomato and green onions and drizzled with unagi sauce. I thought it was really good, considering I don't even like avocados! Some of the food items were a bit too salty for my taste -- the Sizzling Cow (beef teriyaki), for example, but everything else was pretty good. Their rolls aren't super high quality but it's the sauce that makes it yummy. :P Service was quite slow though but I don't blame them since our group was very large. Otherwise, it's a really hip place with weird and cool decor and it's a great place to go to for drinks. If you like fusion food and trying new and interesting things, this is the place to go! I'll be back again next time with my friends. :)
General Public is amazballs!! We tried loads of different dishes at the Zomato Meet Up and each one was tasty and unique. Loved the MDMA one, can not for the life of me remember what was in it but it was excellent.
The decor is mental! Whoever came up with it must be completely wacky! But I love it!
Great cocktails (excellent mojito) and friendly service - I'll be back and next time I'll be dressed as space trooper!
I love The General Public! I've been here a few times but had the pleasure of attending a foodie meet up there and I was so impressed as usual! The awesome staff started us off but a great sake bomb demonstration which was definitely the highlight for me. We had the option between the Lychee Mojito and the Sakura, both awesome but I found the Sakura to be quite delightful! Even though the food took a while to come out, I found that all the food was definitely worth the wait! All their dishes are so inventive and packed with flavour... The sizzling cow in particular was one of my faves as well the Flaming Toro. You also can't go wrong with their KFC Roll, top notch! Can't wait till my next visit
General Public is awesome! The decor is completely insane (papier-mâché horror masks all over the walls, animals hanging from the roof made out of toys glued together), delicious cocktails, sake bombs and fusion inspired sushi rolls. Don't leave without trying the aburi toro nigiri. The servers were great and super attentive - give this place a try!
Good music and fun, eclectic decor. If The Eatery in Kits is too out of the way for you, check out this place by the same owners. Try the flamed sushi, tuna tempura, and cucu's nest! Will definitely come back to try the 3oz mojitos and the wide variety of offbeat rolls.
LOVE the Lychee Mojito and their wide selection of delicious cocktails. The sashimi was extremely fresh, servers were friendly, and love the decor. We especially had fun trying to guess what characters the different horned busts were that were hanging around the restaurant. Service was a tiny bit slower than what I'm used to, but this is probably attributed to the casual, more bar-like environment. Thanks for a great experience, and definitely will return!
They've got a really fun vibe going with the music and decor. The drinks were awesome, including the sake bomb, mojito and the sakira cocktail. It looks like they've got a good selection on tap too which I'll have to go back to check out! Their takes on the tradition sushi rolls are spot on, especially the yoko.
Very interesting decor and cool DJ! The assorted sashimi and ebi mayo was delicious. The rolls were nothing special. I'd definitely go back.
Review! We came here early Saturday evening for a bite, and I was impressed with the overall quality of the food. The deco is definitely eye-catching for any first-timers out here, which we were! From the outside it doesn't look like much but once inside, you'll find yourself staring at all the unique and abstract, lit-up and somewhat-glowing art pieces hung overhead. The whole place definitely has a unique vibe to it.
The Saturday special was EBI-MAYO so we had to order that of course. It was really good for $6 with nice, big and juicy prawns. Simple taste but done right without overdoing it on the sauces. Loved it.
The TORO, TORO, TORO was an aburi toro nigiri and it was perfect mmmmm. It's different, but comparable to Miku level imo. Definitely try that at least once here and make that comparison yourself. Loved it.
HOT PEARLS was a baked roll. Mmmmm I liked this one a lot. The scallop piece on top was so smooth, it worked out with everything to bring the texture and flavour together. Watch out for it being too hot! The rolls came out as soon as they were done. I assume that because it was very hot in the middle! A fairly simple roll but so good. Loved it.
VIVA LAS VEGAS was a deep-fried roll. You can taste the burst of cream cheese in your mouth that just blends everything together to create this gooey yummy texture. Mmmmmm that warm gooey feeling of yummy mmm. This one was a hot roll too so careful on first bite! Loved it.
The SWEETHEART roll was aight. It was interesting to see tempura bits mixed in here with the sashimi, as I don't see that often. It definitely gives it a bit more texture, and in combination with the sesame paste, it tastes heavier. But I liked it.
I found it a bit too loud for your usual dinner so I'll recommend this place for parties. It seems like a good spot to hold a wicked Halloween one. It also seems like this place is family friendly too, in the early dinner hours at least, because we saw toddlers. I would come here again, if just to try more of the bajillion amount of rolls they have. It took us close to forever to decide so thanks to our waitress for checking up on us often!
This place is super cool! I came here on a Saturday night with a few friends. We were actually looking for other restaurants for sushi but the ones we were near were all busy so we ended up coming here. We were not expecting the restaurant to be the way it is, but we loved it! Cool music, weird decorations, funky menu with really interesting drinks. I would bring other people here, just because there were so many conversation starters all around us. Since it was our first time, the server suggested us to get the House Party platter. For four people, it was definitely enough. We were all satisfied and full. Not all the rolls had raw fish in it, I would consider this place a modern fusion take on Japanese food. The drinks were good as well. All in all, it was an awesome atmosphere, interesting food and drinks, service was also good as well. Like I said before, I'm definitely coming back, and I'll be bringing my friends!
We hit up the general public for a late night eat on a Wednesday and it was bumping! I've been to the eatery on several occasions, and the menu was pretty much the same (as expected). We ordered the fortress which is my absolute favorite roll always- anything with yam fries! Our server was quite absent, and it took her awhile to get us the bill. She was very friendly when it was time to pay though! Not impressed by the service as a whole that night but the food was great!
If you want fusion sushi, this is the place you want to be! Being a sushi lover I've been to many Japanese restaurants and this one is one of the funky ones. The decor is fun and the dishes are not too salty or sweet...it will pair well with a glass of beer. Pretty big portions..it's not small bite size sushi. We went around 5 which was good because it started to get busy around 6!
If you can brave the hunger for 45 min, you'll be rewarded with some pretty interesting rolls. If you come here you pretty much have to try the specialty house rolls, especially if you like things with avocado or mango.I got the Green Hornet, quite sizeable and a little pricey ($8 or so), but hey, you pay for the experience and ambiance. The roll was very creamy, the prawn tempura well fried and not soggy, but man was I ever famished after waiting 45 min for my food.Perhaps they were waiting to serve our entire group of 9 for our food, but maybe they should've clarified that this would be the case instead of making us wait until 8:10, well past most people's dinnertimes.
All in all, I'd return to try a few more rolls, but let them know to serve as it comes.
I spotted General Public across the street and noticed a pink car parked outside mentioning The Eatery which seemed a little odd. We weren’t hungry at the time so I didn’t think much of it, so we kept walking and ended up having a seat over at Caffe Barney on their patio to soak in some rays. Next thing we knew, several hours and beers had passed and food once again became a concern. Seeing as how they were just down the street and I wanted to see what the connection to The Eatery was, the dinner destination seemed like an easy choice. Walking in it was immediately clear that these two places were related. For anyone who’s been to The Eatery you already know what they’re all about. Lots of random sushi options, excessive amounts of wacky art, loud music, cramped seating and generally lots of UBC students. The General Public is very similar but a slightly toned down version of just that. The capacity is probably half the size with a bit more space to move around, the art along the wall and ceiling is pretty funky and since it’s not close to UBC it wasn’t nearly as busy though that may have partly been due to the fact that the Canucks game 6 was on. If the art and space wasn’t enough of an indication, while the menu looks a little different, the food selection is very similar and may even be identical since I’d been to The Eatery a few weeks ago and recognized a lot of the same sushi roll names. Speaking of sushi, we got started with three rolls and a side to start since and see how we felt. I picked the Tex Mex (california roll, creamy salsa of tomatoes, avocado, roe, salmon) because it just sounded a little different as well as what I think (da
Seriously what can I even say about the General Public. Such a sick spot. I ALWAYS have an awesome time when I'm there. Not only is their staff amazing and their vine incompatible, but their food is awesome. Their Fat Elvis is beyond words. Deep fried avocado? What could be better!?! I'd also recommend their nobashi prawns, sizzling cow, tuna tempted, flaming toro, miso mayo scallops, Charlie tuna and of course, the KFC roll. Serious just get anything on the menu. I also really appreciate going to a sushi restaurant that has fresh fish with a twist. Check this spot out for sure!
A huge selection of high-end, creative sushi rolls. The menu includes a number of vegetarian rolls that go beyond just avocado and yam. I had a really tasty roll with sundried tomato. The prices aren't cheap but the rolls are very good.
Sushi for people who don't like sushi!. They call themselves a "Funky Sushi Lodge" and that about sums it up. I personally don't eat a lot of fish, but I love vegetarian sushi rolls, so it's nice to have a lot of non-fish options for sushi. GP has tons of interesting and delicious rolls that you won't find anywhere else. This is a great place to go if with a group for sushi when you have picky eaters or non-fish eaters with you. Veg and gluten free options galore. I highly recommend getting a liter of lychee mojito as well.
My favourite sushi place. The east side version of The Excellent Eatery - both are my fave places for sushi, amazing menu variety, delicious fresh sushi. Just wish they had bento boxes!
Great place for friends!. We had a mini guys reunion there last night. Randy took great care of us bringing a good selection of food. The beer pitcher was flowing and the service from our waitress (Hannah) was excellent. Fun and lively place. I'm told that there is a DJ on weekends. The decor is funny and cool with lots of hidden meaning and double-speak...very clever. The location is central right off Main and 17th Ave. We enjoyed the fancy sushi, the rolls were big and tasty.
Great food. Eclectic room. The service pretty close to adequate. I can see how they could get caught in the 'more style than substance' mode that many GVRD restaurants do, but the food is genuinely creative, tasty and of good quality.
This place is the bomb! With modern papermache characters and unique sushi and food varieties that you think wont fo but absolutly do and send your taste buds on a ride! Try the banana eel sushi and ask to be served by the one and only Matina!
Food was solid. Appy portions maybe a little small but delicious. Sushi rolls top notch. And combining a craft beer joint and sushi is a stroke of genius.
Great food. This place is owned by the eatery so it's the same excellent sushi you get there. Only thing the interior is a bit weird. But then again it's supposed to be ironic or something. Get rid of the guns I think it would be a lot better. I actually like love the music and the place is just laid back enough that you can relax. But not at the expense of uncleanliness or bad service. I hope more people can look past the guns.
This is not meant to be a 6 dollar 24piece crap sushi joint were you're not quite sure if the chef washed his hands. You do pay a bit more but the rolls are excellent and the place is clean.
Best sushi on main for veggieheads. Ppl who are rating this joint poorly obviously havent been to its original location (the eatery) nor must they enjoy having more than three options for vegetarian sushi. the menu, like the much loved Eatery, is full of fun and different options for out there (and very yum) sushi rolls. their hot stuff is great too. try the veggie croquettes and the fat elvis. and one taste of the dragon sauce and you will be back for more! this is the sushi joint to go to if you wanna step out of the bento box and have a tastebud adventure. and yes, the decor can be tacky and perhaps offensive to the misunderstanding main street hipster, but again, if you go to the Eatery you know that their interiors are tacky on purpose and not meant to prod at anyone. so ease up main street, and invite another great, locally owned ma and pa shop to your hood. its better than a cactus club!
Very tasty and innovative sushi in a fun environment. Service could be friendlier and more efficient. They will get there, I'm sure
Great Fun Place!. I have been to The General Public numerous times and bring all of my out own town and International guests to one off the few fun dining experiences that Vancouver has to offer! The Food is great and the experience created is one that ia unique and highly memorable!
Now open to the General Public ~ Sometimes It pays having Frenchy own his own masonry business. When he works on new restaurants he gets free food when they open; and he gets the inside scoop on up and coming great places to eat. "General Public" was such a case and such a place. Frenchy built the exterior brick wall all around the building front, it is now painted black. He was able to give me a sneak peak of the décor before the place was all up and running, here are a few of those pictures. “General Public” is the sister restaurant to "The Eatry", so you know decor will be one of their main priorities. And they sure did not disappoint. They lived up to their reputation of over the top art, but presented in a much more polished and refined way compared .Similar to "The Eatery" it boasts some pretty impressive paper mâché artwork, I believe the same a
