Solly's has been around forever and I finally had the chance to try it. I come from a background of work processes so this may come off a bit nerdy, but the workflow of Solly's is messy. In this restaurant you order from the right side where the deli is if you want a breakfast from the deli, you take their hand written receipt and then walk to the left line to pay for it. Then you wait until they call your name to go pick it up all while holding the bagel sign (Solly's if you ever want to discuss about how to improve this, please use my contact page).
Wendy and I were looking for a quick snack around Broadway and Cambie, and Solly’s Bagelry looked like it fit the bill. Once inside things got a bit more interesting, as we could see that Solly’s wasn’t just a bagel place, but a full Jewish bakery. As the sign says, they carry babka but we didn’t check to see if they have the debatably “lesser” cinnamon variety from the Seinfeld episode. I love that show!

Go for the Fresh Cream Cheese and Bagels and a Reminder why You Don't work for your Dad
Word on the street is that Solly's isn't worth a visit but I decided to try it out anyway, because I wanted some Matzo Ball Soup.
I ordered the Soup and Bagel combo for $6.75 and I bought a tub of Chive and Garlic Cream Cheese $5.75 and a Kosher Pickle $1.75.
Disappointed in the the Matzo Ball soup. It is bland and missing the secret-not-so-secret ingredient: chicken fat. Pleasantly surprised by the Chive and Garlic Cream Cheese and Onion Bagel though - it has very fresh flavors and I could have done without the Kosher pickle (it's like eating straight up salt).
The Service was entertaining: the Cashier was an older Gentleman who insisted in figuring out how to punch in my order himself for a solid 5 minutes. And when the younger Cashier asked if he could step in or use the other register -- the older Cashier said: Noooo, you can wait until I'm done punching this in!
LOVE their pastrami bagel. Chewy un the perfect bread version of El dente.
Their cinnamon buns are pretty good but world famous is a stretch. Their too sweet by a little bit but the genius lies in the fact of how many THIN layers the bun has. Adds layers and layers of cinnamon and flavors where most buns are balnd and flavourless
Top notch bagels, unreal cream cheese, and the best damn blueberry apple strudel I've ever had. I'm sold.
Just not as good. This was a fave of mine in this area (really like that there's some space which is usually airy and bright and enjoy the varied customers-everyone comes here), but the last couple of times I've been here everything tastes old and is dry. Even the honey cake was dried out. "Meat"balls (they're veggie) were becoming mouldy and the overly sugared sauce could not mask it. I'm not an expert when it comes to bagels although I know I don't like it when I have to literally try and saw through them cause they are so dry. The folks working here do seem overworked and not the happiest. I wonder what's been happening with Sollys?
Sticky cin buns. I love the bagels here as that's what they are known chewy and soft on the inside even if you microwave it the next day but i definitely come here for the decadent cinnamon buns! at first i was hesitant about it satisfying my taste buds as i usually go for the cream cheese frosted ones but Solly's version is quite comparable if not better without the cream cheese!
Nice desserts.. I work in this area, and I pretty much come for the desserts. Every so often I'll come in for a babka or a cinnamon roll and come away satisfied. That said, the service is only middling in my opinion but I think part of that is because they're busy during the lunch hours.
What's wrong with me?. I've been going to Solly's locations for years, all three...i like the one at Yukon and 7th because it has free parking and it's big, but the other smaller ones have a certain small sized charm. I've eaten many a shmear, a few too many eggels, and dozens of cinnamon buns but didn't try their pastrami sandwich until last weekend. Maybe it was my recent trip to New York that left me craving good Jewish deli....i discovered that their pastrami holds up to NY standards! I think they could work a bit on their rye bread, but the meat was tender. The matzo ball soup was alright, too. Just a note about the cinnamon buns--if you like cinnamon buns, you'll love these ones. The layers are so thin, not fluffy, so they hold a lot more gooey goodness. Can't wait to try their corned beef...
Best Cinnamon Buns in Town!. I tried their turkey breast with tomatoes and lettuce sandwich with dijon mustard. The bagel was fresh and just the right size, unlike the regular oversized ones you'd find from the usual super market chains/tim horton's. Also tried their corned beef sandwich, which was LOADED with corned beef so that was a plus! I will faint without meat. Chicken noodle soup was alright, also, their sandwich combos come with a coleslaw.
Their cinnamon buns are a MUST TRY, because they are simply crunchy and tasty. I don't usually get it with the icing and it's not as gooey/sweet as the other ones that I've tried in the past. The best cinnamon buns in town!
Best cinnammon bun in the city and other good baked goodies! Lunch bagels are also really good...prices are decent. Lineups are slow though, they could be faster service wise.
When I saw the amount of cream cheese they layered on there, my heart decided to clench a bit in anticipation of the upcoming cholesterol attack...

...Babkas are similar to cinnamon buns but made with chocolate. They had me at chocolate. The consistency of the bread is about the same, they also put a little bit of powdered sugar and a bit of chocolate on the top. It’s not overly sweet, so it’s quite enjoyable. It’s best enjoyed warm!
Solly's is a pretty well known bagel place/deli with two locations in Vancouver. I went to the Mount Pleasant location for breakfast the other day and discovered they have veggie meatballs! Guess what I ordered? They were really good! I don't know exactly what they were made out of, but there was definitely nuts involved. The meatballs were served piping hot with a super good marinara sauce and some nice, fluffy couscous. Definitely recommended!
