I like how here the seafood boils come with a bit of everything so you don’t have to deal with ordering different seafood by the pound. It comes with crab legs, mussels, clams, prawns, potatoes, and corn on the cob. The garlic butter sauce was my favourite because it was flavourful, but the taste of the seafood didn’t get lost in it.
The House Special Spicy flavour was also purely spicy so I didn’t try too much of it. I feel like when you pair seafood with flavours that are so strong, you lose the simplicity of it. I personally like to taste seafood with little to no seasoning so needless to say, I didn’t go goo goo ga ga over this.
I got an invite from Raymond at ChineseBites to try Yaletown’s newest seafood bar: 21 Nautical Miles. Described as “high end Asian fusion”, this restaurant is becoming well-known for their Chinese-style seafood boils. Their Seafood Party dish ($38.95 per person, minimum 2 people); consists of BC Dungeness crab, selva tiger prawns, blue mussels, and clams. Alaskan king crab lobster tail and snow crab are available for an extra charge – trust me, you want to order the snow crab. The Seafood Party comes in three flavours with five different spice levels: garlic butter, black pepper, Xi’an spicy, and house special spicy. As proud members of Ocean Wise, 21 Nautical Miles Seafood Bar only serves sustainable, ocean-friendly seafood.

The seafood boils come in a metal bowl and are dumped onto your table which has been covered with parchment paper. Each diner will have a mallet and wooden board so you can smash open your crab. You’ll also get plastic gloves and a bib so you can get as messy as you want! There is a two person minimum order and it’ll cost you $38.95 per person. This will get you BC Dungeness crab, selva tiger prawns, blue mussels, clams, corn and potato. If you want to get fancy like we did, you can also add on Alaskan king crab, lobster tail, and snow crab. There are also four flavours to choose from, and pictured here is the Garlic Butter. This is perfect for those who can’t eat spicy and is really the only option since the other three are all spicy. This was a crowd pleaser since you really can’t go wrong with garlic butter flavoured anything!
Seafood boils are making a resurgence our food landscape with a few popping up around town. I first spotted this one by its purple neon lights while walking past at night. And today I was lucky enough to be invited to a media preview hosted by “Chinese Bites”, to feast on a few of their more elaborate dishes. Especially, as I won’t naturally find myself visiting such a place. I don’t like labour in eating and getting my hands dirty with boils and other crustacean dishes, but I would soon learn that there is so much more that they offer.
The quiet part of Yaletown, located on Hamilton between Davie and Homer streets, recently welcomed a slew of new Asian restaurants. In the past month, I have reviewed newly opened modern, upscale Vietnamese eatery, House Special, as well Asian fusion Kuma Izakaya. Their neighbour, 21 Nautical Miles, is newcomer serving Asian fusion seafood at at 1257 Hamilton Street. Furthermore, they are in process of becoming an Oceanwise restaurant.
