Cafe Xu Hue is a little hole in the wall spot that specializes in bun bo hue. Every time I walk by on a weekend, there’s a line. You’ll find them next door to Ngon Banh Mi & Tea. Hours. Note: closed on Wednesday. They proudly show off their Vancouver 2017 Restaurant award. I’ve been a few times now. The inside only has 8 tables (with a total of 34 seats). Service is efficient and food comes out quickly. They bring a cup of cold tea when you first sit down.
Café Xu Hue is a place which we have been going for Bún bò Hu in many years, but we never write a review about this place. We have been greedy for NOT sharing this secret place with others, but its popularity is well known by lots of Vietnamese people.
Bún bò Hu is a popular spicy Vietnamese soup containing rice vermicelli with sliced pork and beef. The difference between pho and bun noodles is that pho is flat like fettuccine whereas bun is cylindrical like spaghetti.
Bún bò Hu at Café Xu Hue has a lot of ingredients with pork hock, pigs blood, and beef in big portion size. They serve with shredded banana blossom, chili pepper, and bean spout. These add a different dimension to the soup compared to other Vietnamese restaurants. Most restaurants charge extra or don't have shredded banana blossom. Café Xu Hue is very generous and provides it ONLY if you order Bún bò Hu.
Café Xu Hue is located on Kingsway near the new T&T Supermarket at Kensington Gardens in East Vancouver. 2226 Kingsway, Vancouver, BC

Limited but well executed selection. No frills just good food. Prices are a touch higher than comparable spots in the area but well worth it.
The interior and exterior of this Vietnamese restaurant have nothing fancy. When you look at it outside, you can think of a local traditional old style of Vietnamese restaurant.
Their menu has limited options, but those dishes are what this restaurant is good at and what they focus on.
I love their spicy Vietnamese vermicelli with sliced pork and beef in soup. The Vietnamese siu mai dumplings were very unique that I couldn't find in a lot of Vietnamese restaurants. The skin of the Vietnamese siu mai dumplings were soft and chewy. Their Vietnamese rice noodles with chicken in soup was great as well. The broth was better and different from other Vietnamese restaurants. This is how they differentiate from others in the market.
Pricing is average among the Vietnamese restaurants in Lower Mainland. Customer service was okay. Can't expect too much when it comes to a small Vietnamese restaurant.
There is no private parking lot. Street parking along Kingsway.
As you can tell... I've been to Xu Hue one too many times. One of my favourite pho restaurants... ever!
The Bun Bo Hue is one of THE best in the city. The Chicken Pho is pretty dam good too... and if you want to make it even better: *TIP* ask for it with the broth from #5 (thank me later).
The Vietnamese siu mai dumplings are pretty bomb also!
Theres only one dish Ive ever got here, I'm sure everyone can expect it too.. the bun bo hue! I use to be a girl who never cared for this dish but at this restaurant it is made perfectly, there is a great kick of heat in it and the broth remains tastly and flavourful. There is also an assortment of different meats in the soup which gives a great variety in each bite. Definitely worth a try!
This place is known for one thing only. The bun bo hue. Upon entering it's nothing fancy, which is fine. You get a small menu, very simple. I opted to try their famous bbh. I was feeling tired so I got the viet ice coffee.
Bbh comes and wow, not bad. The only downside for me is that the broth could've been hotter. It's not as spicey as I thought it would be, but that's fine, they gave chili's on the side. The iced coffee done to standard, delicious. Service is well... Kinda bland lol. It's like there's no personality or energy. They weren't rude. I'll definitely come back if I crave bbh.
This place is known for bun bo hue. Came here couple of times with my family and their bun bo hue is good but not great. I find the taste is little bit sweeter than I would like. I like Song Huong bun bo hue better. My aunt loves this place and she thinks they make best bun bo hue but my mother doesn't like the taste and she prefers Song Huong. It really depends on personal taste.
Best BBH in Canada. Better then BBH in hue Vietnam
Nothing can compare. No other Bbh at any pho resto can compare. Generous on herbs and meats... Cannot get more authentic then this place. Must try. Very addictive
Service was horrible if there was any service at all. We waited about ten minutes to order while each of the three servers walked by us, my making eye contact. Finally one of us asked if we could order and the server bluntly said "just wait" and walked away.
However when the food came, it blew us all away. It was a big bowl of savory goodness. The iced coffee (which was ordered first but came way after our meal) was also very good. Prices are pretty reasonable as well. Will come back despite the lack of service because the food was worth it.
