Kimu Japanese Restaurant opened up about 2.5 years ago, and I surprisingly have not yet written a review about it! There was a period of time in 2016 when the boyfriend and I came here quite often, as the replacement to Uomo Sushi. But I’m glad that Kimu hasn’t changed much from our last visit!

The corner of 29th and Boundary is a very busy location and I’ve driven by it on many occasions. However, I’ve never really noticed the Kimu Japanese Cuisine restaurant until recently. I arrived for an early dinner in April and noticed that it actually got quite busy (always a good sign). They have a pretty good selection of Japanese food here so I got a little bit of everything. The Chopped Scallop ($1.80) and Ikura ($2.25) nigiri were the first to arrive at my table and foreshadowed the rest of the yummy food to follow. The chopped scallop was nice and creamy while the salmon roe was fresh and had a popping sensation when I bit into it.

Great neighborhood sushi spot! It's Japanese cuisine with a Korean influence, they have a few items on the menu that you won't find anywhere else, such as the dontoro roll: tender grilled pork belly rolled up with asparagus and topped with kimchi. Or the spicy chirashi don which is basically an affordable poke bowl with a good helping of seafood, salad greens, rice and a spicy gochujang sauce.
The nigiri is so-so, both times I've eaten here the rice was pretty dry and lacking seasoning. Beers are cheap and the staff are super friendly! Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area

Very interesting restaurant (to say the the least).  I have seen a few pictures of this place on social media and have always been meaning to try it.  I was not disappointed.  There was a few things that you would never find on a regular japanese restaurant menu.  I tried the sushi cake, which was pretty amazing, with an abundance of different tastes in it.  The deep fried Salifornia Roll sounded different, but it was a "meh" from me.  Other than that, the regular Spider Roll and the Chopped Scallop roll was pretty good, but nothing outstanding.

The decor was very nice, and the service there was good as well.  They were very attentive with the tea and was very helpful, when it came to questions.  I thought the prices were very reasonable as well.  I would want to go back and try their sushi pizza.  Looked good on the pictures.

I was recommended KIMU Japanese Cuisine by friends showing me interesting pictures of sushi. Naturally when I went I didn't get any "rolls" but whatever sounded way more interesting. It's too bad the menu doesn't have pictures but you can check out pics online at Zomato and Yelp to see just how pretty and interesting their creations are and at decent portions for very reasonable prices!

I was excited to try this place out and it didn't disappoint! It isn't the easiest to get to if you can't drive there. But if you're around the area, definitely try it out. The restaurant is new and nice. We were seated quickly and they brought us tea right away. Service here was really good the whole time we were there!

We tried the aburi combo (6 pieces for $12), Belly King roll, chopped scallop roll, and the uni and ikura don. Presentation was pretty with their large bowl for the don and the garnishes for the belly king roll. The belly king roll description says that it has pesto and a balsamic reduction. I was afraid that the sauces would be overpowering, but it wasn't. However, I actually didn't even really taste much of the sauce at all. But the roll was still good, except I think I will stick with my usual negitoro roll. Chopped scallop had the right taste, but was a bit too chopped to my liking. The don was beautifully presented and had a generous portion of uni. The aburi was my favourite and is an item I would go back for. Our aburi came with beef, salmon, tuna (belly?), ebi, hamachi (toro?), and hotate. I can't exactly remember the exact ones but they were really good. The ebi is not your typical prawn and was really meaty and tender. The beef was not over seared. The hamachi and tuna melted in my mouth. The only one that wasn't as good was salmon because we tried that one last. It's still good, but in comparison to the others, I'd rather have those.

I was definitely happy with my visit here. Food was great, pricing is reasonable, and service was friendly. Definitely a place I'll be going to more often.

Food is consistently fresh and the portions of fish are generous. The menu is interesting as there are a variety of creations such as the Sushi cake that are worth trying. Be prepared to wait for your food though as it seems to take a while regardless of how busy the restaurant is.

Oddly enough, first to arrive was the Okonomiyaki, which was a success. The pancake was soft with a slight crispiness around the edges. There were plenty of bonito flakes on top, as well as a good balance of Worcestershire sauce and mayonnaise

Can I call this a hidden gem yet? Opened its doors just a few months back, this is right in my hood. There is street parking and also a shared parking lot on the side. I’ve been meaning to try this place everytime I commute by bus and pass by it. . Sushi Cake $9.50. I gave in and ordered this after seeing all the photos on Instagram. For $9.50, what was all the hype? First off, you think this was just a normal size dish but actually it’s packed with seafood actually. The bottom layer is rice that has been packed together to form a base. It has been toasted so the rice is crunchy. The middle part is packed with real crab meat and marinated tuna with spicy mayo, sweet sauce and capers (I had to pick out these as I dislike them a lot). On top of that is tobiko. On the very top is a good amount of seared salmon. To finish the dish, there is balsamic reduction drizzled on the plate. Reasonably priced and so much to eat. Easily shared among 2-3 persons.

This place is so delicious! Must try aburi which is very reasonably priced compared to Miku etc. Dontoro bites to start were surprisingly flavorful. But chewy but tasty nonetheless. Black cod was soft and succulent. Chicken karaage was fried but yet soft and drizzled with a nice spicy mayo sauce. The 2 aburi we ordered (salmon belly and Toro) was very fatty which means tender soft and had a nice smokey flavor! Alaska and belly king roll was alright. The usual that we get from other sushi places so I could have done without those 2 but the rest were amazing! Refer to pictures please. This place took over the previous sushi restaurant but they renovated a bit. Nice and new decor! Give it a try!!

2 words: FRESH SASHIMI!!! 😍

RAW FOOD: I don't normally order uni (sea urchin) at Korean-run Japanese restaurants but I saw that it was on special -- fresh arrivals! 👏 It was one of the freshest uni I've had in a long time, better than even other higher-end restaurants. I was extremely glad I ordered it. 👌 • We got their aburi combo which was pretty tasty as the seafood were all really fresh. I even ordered the negi hamachi roll instead of regular negi toro and it was pretty good.
• The sushi pizza was different from some other places -- there was no spicy sashimi! Of course it tasted good as the fish was fresh and drizzled with roe and sauce sitting on a lightly fried bed of rice. (Here's one thing you need to know: always avoid the spicy tuna/salmon sashimi at any sushi restaurant.) • Belly King Roll is what it sounds like: features salmon belly and tuna belly sashimi. Pretty tasty but by the last piece I felt like I ate too much toro but luckily it was also the last dish to arrive.

COOKED FOOD: Okonomiyaki was a bit on the smaller side but at least it has octopus in it I think.. but it was missing some aonori (seaweed sprinkles) and Japanese mayo.
SERVICE: The service was quick and polite -- especially impressive given the number of customers poured in on a cloudy Sunday afternoon.

I'm definitely coming back here again 😋😋😋😋

A and I met up for lunch last Sunday, and we ended up at Kimu because our first choice of restaurant wasn’t open on Sunday! ):. I love how open the restaurant is. The seats weren’t cramped and the overall feeling of the restaurant was very airy. It’s a bit out of the way, but they have a parking lot, and when we arrived at 12:30 pm it was moderately busy. Unfortunately for us, they forgot to put our order in and we waited for 45 minutes before I had to ask a waitress where our food was (a table of 6 that came in after us was served and finished before we even got our first dish!)

Teriyaki Beef Bento $8.95 (4/5分)
Grilled beef on rice, Salad, Potato Croquette, California roll, Tempura (2pcs prawn, 2pcs Vegetables)

Sashimi & Sushi Bento $13.95 (4.5/5分)
Assorted Sashimi (7pcs), 3pcs nigiri, Spicy tuna roll, Salad, Potato Croquette, Tempura (2pcs prawn, 2pcs Vegetables)

Vegetable Bento $ 9.50 (3.5/5分)
Tofu teriyaki on rice, Yam rolls (8pcs), Salad, Potato Croquette, Vegetable Tempura (4pcs)

So. Good. Commodity sushi prices with excellent execution and generous portion size. Sushi cake is a must try. Glad to see how busy this little neighborhood gem has been since opening.

Great Japanese restaurant in this neighbourhood. Not much competition around. There is a parking lot close to the restaurant. There is street parking as well.

The interior design is simple but makes the environment very comfortable. The restaurant is very spacious with many tables and chairs. Customers don't need to wait for seats. Servers are friendly and polite. They gave us hot tea once we have got into the restaurant. They always keep an eye on the customers and make sure they take care of all the customers' needs and give tea to customers during the meal.

We enjoyed the food that we ordered. We got aburi sushi combo twice, two rolls and a grilled black cod. Every single bite of these food was excellent! The quality and presentation of each dish were great!

Pricing and portions are reasonable overall. I only have one compliant about the grilled black cod though. It cost $8.95 for a very small piece. My friends and I were very satisfied about the meal and our first visit to this Japanese restaurant.

Delicious! Has the typical sushi items, but also tasty dishes that required a bit of thought. The sushi cake is a must try, think of it as a sushi pizza but with salmon and roasted garlic! We were able to go with our 1yo without getting stare downs. A great casual spot with dishes that you'd see at high end restaurants.

Kimu was our go to restaurant for lunch Saturday - we arrived just before the opening time of 11:30 am.  It's new, clean, neat & tidy, with warm and friendly staff, has no-charge parking in an adjacent side lot, and is located in a rather nice, local neighbourhood (personal note - a former hood of mine, and nice to see it again).  And 'Oh', the food was sure good!

Here's what we (as a threesome) ordered, and shared:  Note:  all dishes prepared to order, served to our table in the sequence as listed, and I've used the listing descriptions from the eat-in menu.
-  Tea:  provided at no extra charge, and cups refilled throughout our meal without asking.
-  Agedashi tofu (spicy, w/house sauce) - quite large-sized, cube portions, thin, crispy covering, and soft & sweet inside, ample sauce, tasty, but without being too spicy hot.  Yum!
-  Okonomiyaki (seafood pancake) -  our first taste of this kind of dish, and it was so good!  I can't describe what was inside and out (except for the bonito flakes), the inside was creamy, and so flavourful - from initial taste to last, it was a total delight to the taste buds!
-  Volcano eggplant seafood yaki (deep fried eggplant, pan fried seafoods w/onion, melted mozzarella, cheddar cheese, w/spicy mix sauce and bonita on top) - another first taste of such a dish for us, and again, what a delight to the senses!  Everything within, and on top, so well-prepared, and flavourful ("sweet and rich" tasting).
-  Tempura:  assorted - 4 prawns, 7 veggies (w/onion, broccoli, green bean, yam, zucchini, green pepper) - nicely-prepared, with very thin, light, and crispy batter, and all ingredients cooked perfectly.
-  Classic Rolls:  Kamikaze Roll (massage, avocado, cucumber, crab stick, spicy tuna), and Miso Beef Roll (lettuce, cucumber, teriyaki beef, special miso sauce) - nicely-prepared ingredients, colourful, and tasty, the Kamikaze with a light, flavourful, spicy 'kick' on the aftertaste.  Yum!
-  Sashimi:  assorted - 12 pieces (w/salmon, tuna, tai, tako, and four pieces 'Chef choice') - for daughter and I - gorgeous colourful presentation, ingredients so well-prepared, fresh, sweet, and tasty.
-  Noodles:  Yakisoba (w/assorted seafood) - brought to the table sizzling hot - the noodles and seafood (pieces of octopus and squid, shrimp, mussels on the half-shell, and some slivers of carrot, onion, pieces of broccoli, green bean, and such, and a tasty, lightly-spiced sauce), so nicely-prepared - a warm, very tasty, and flavourful dish, and much-enjoyed.

We over-ordered a touch! .. but wanted to taste as much from their extensive menu as we could.  All leftovers came home with us, and provided a very tasty dinner snack for my lady and I.  Kimu was a great choice for lunch.   The service was attentive, warm, and friendly, and the food, so well-prepared and presented.  It's a fine, new, small restaurant, in a nice, local neighbourhood setting.  We wish them well, and hope to get back for further tastes before long.
