Always order takeout from this place. May not look like the best but I can guarantee that you won't be disappointed. Their honey garlic spare ribs are amazing, very saucy and has little pieces of pineapple. The corn soup and wonton soup are very good as well. Prices are reasonable and they have delivery combos. Try the curry beef cricket on rice, not spicy but has amazing flavour.
Don't let the exterior fool you. There's a tiny tiny gem hidden here. Last minute my parents and I wanted to have a quick lunch. We haven't been here in years, since I was young lad. Service is straight forward. We were handed the menus and noticed the 4.99 lunch specials that includes a daily soup. A dollar more for a soda. Ok so we all got the lunch specials. Daily soup that day was the hot and sour and wow lol, it was pretty decent!
My mom got the wonton egg noodle soup and it's done right. In house made wontons are delicious, very well prepared. My dad got the bbq pork and veggie noodle soup, nothing impressive, I would say just standard, but still good. Then I got the beef brisket rice bowl. It really looked boring with no garnish LOL. But to my surprise it was pretty good after I slapped on some of that chili sauce from the jar on the table.
Now if your on a tight budget guys, this place has 3.99 breakfast and 4.99 lunch specials. It's great cheap eats here. Plenty of parking all around. They did renovations inside and it's comfortable. Service is straight forward and I've never had a bad incident so far. But do keep in mind with prices this low with specials, sometimes service is a hit or miss...
I have been eating here since the late 80's. The value and taste of their food is good. I like how they renovated the place which makes the inside a surprise if you haven't been here. Throughout the years growing up in Vancouver, I can say that I have tried 90% of their menu. I remember when I was a kid the owner who is this older lady making fresh wontons on one of the tables. I recommend the wontons because they are fresh and I recommend the new clay pot dishes. This place is great for groups. When you go here, try one soup dish, rice and main course. The servers also have good recommendations.
Exterior of this restaurant can look shabby, but don't be fooled! The interior seems to be newly renovated (with new tvs and new tables) and the restaurant space is very clean. Very friendly waitresses and service is above average comparative to a lot of Chinese restaurants in the same area. Menu prices are in the cheaper side and orders are in big portions too, but unfortunately food taste only average.
Newly renovated to serve Vancouver classic casual Cantonese cuisine...again. Long live Hoy's!
Don't judge a book..... I have been going to Hoy's since I was 6 years old. I am now 34. Kim and May have been there for well over 15 years I'm sure. I took my wife to Hoy's for our first date over 15 years ago and they were there for it. I figured why do something fancy, I had to take her to my favorite restaurant. If the date didn't go well, at least I knew I would have a good meal. I have been married for almost 13 years now, and this is still our favorite restaurant. We have 2 children, 9 and 11, and they are both Hoy's fans. When my wife was pregnant with our second we were there 2-3 times a week. Keep in mind we live in Maple Ridge. At that point we didn't even have to order our food, because May and Kim knew our order every time. They are like family! The kids threw so much rice on the floor when they were young. We still go to hoys at least once to twice a month, and are actually going there tonight! BBQ Pork and Wonton Noodle in Soup. Every time. And the Pot stickers? Damn..... Again, it's not the fanciest restaurant, but the food is KILLER!!!! Try it!
Good Value and Quality. We always have food deliver to our place. It always comes on time and warm. Portions are big and cheap prizes. We love their Chow Mein probably the best I had ever tried.
Update Dec 2011
Visit the restaurant in a trip to Vancouver, I always had delivery from here and was great, this time I went to the restaurant. Don't let the dated outside and weird colours deceive you from the real deal, which is the food. AMAZING! Great portions, best Chow Mein in town, and my absolute favorite Brisket in Curry, the brisket is always soft and lean (in other restaurants they give you fat only) and the curry is just the best curry I ever tried.
Hoy’s is one of those places you always drive past but seldom consider stopping at to eat. I won’t lie to you, the exterior gives the impression you will get attacked inside, but don’t worry, I can assure you it’s perfectly safe (minus the potential gangster pool hall next store of course) According to the menu, there was a “5.75 Lunch Special", which consisted of soup and any of the lunch entrees (under the list). To start, the soup it came with was Hot N’ Sour Soup. It was hot, both temperature wise and spice wise, though it was a tad on the bland side. It also had a distinct texture of soup that’s thickened with flour, though it did have a lot of ingredients in it I guess…. Part of the aforementioned lunch special was a plate of Curry Chicken on Rice. The chicken was nicely seasoned, though the rest of it was just sorta creamy without any character to it. The sliced beef with swirl egg on rice dish is exactly what it sounded like. The beef wasn’t too chewy, which I thoroughly enjoye
