This place blew me away! I ordered take out from them as I've always wanted to try their food having heard good things from friends. Did not disappoint! The food was amazing, I love the fusion of Japanese and Caribbean cuisines. We got the Teriyaki and Jerk Chicken combo, the Okonomiyaki "pizza", and a couple of patties and wow, absolutely delicious for a very fair price. The owner was really lovely - her efforts to run the place all by herself are incredible. Looking forward to dining in and getting take out more often!
The Lion’s Den Cafe is a restaurant that has recently celebrated 18 years. They have some good menu items there, and it is a good place to eat.
The owner recently had a stroke, and his wife was running the place all by herself. Her effort is nothing short of Herculean in spite of her being unable to have fish available, time being in short supply for but one person. I admire her efforts as much as I crave the food. Recommended!
It is a unique place in vancouver, I really like the "mama-papa" place, feel there are lots of stories behind the restaurants. Hope the owner gets better, and continue doing such a comfort food :)
What an awesome surprise as I was looking for a place to have lunch on an early Sunday afternoon. I ordered Ken's Special with shrimp. Great meal. Very healthy and incredibly tasty. The serving was generous and good value. Seating is limited, so I can imagine it being very busy a lot of the time. There's a "Japaribbean" fusion happening here. Smooth reggae was playing softly throughout my visit. Service is casual and friendly. I'll be back for sure. Along with the Mexican restaurant , that makes two great ones that i know of in this block.
This hidden gem is amazing, just UNREAL MAN. Have you ever had a spicy Jamaican beef patty?!?? They are absolutely delicious!!!
They are 2.75each. The owner is ken and the wife is junko, an amazing chef WOW! The decor is beautiful and yes, that's a real lion inside his establishment. If your a vancouverite you gotta try it here, Phenomenal!
They are such a cute couple. Who would've thought Japanese /Caribbean fused food. Absolutely wonderful!
Japaribbean! Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. We hit this place a lot for breakfast, cheap, great and the atmosphere is perfect to start the day. Dinner Id recommend the jerk chicken with a patty to go for midnight snack. Awesome owner as well, you're in for a treat!
Great spot. Had breakfast at the Lion's Den today. What a great spot! The owner, Ken, is great and the breakfast was delicious (especially the potatoes!) and well priced. Will definitely be back!
Brilliant!. Ken is great fun and I highly recommend trying this restaurant.
I had the curried lamb and was pleasantly surprised that it was led by a small but fresh mixed greens salad. Ken came and sat with us and made us feel comfortable in his 14 year plus establishment. The lamb was tender and delicious, to me anyway.
We signed his calendar after he told us the story of his lion. If you are wanting something different, unique and good ... try this one out.
I love this place, the food is great the service is friendly and warm and the over all feel of the cafe is chill and welcoming. You even get to hear a story about their lion mascot and you get to sign a calendar that celebrates your first visit. I will be back again and again.
Warm and welcoming. Finally tried this place last weekend after passing by it many times - and I'm so glad we did! On a cold, grey, rainy winter day, stepping inside into the steamy little room, reggae playing in the background and warm delicious smells coming from the kitchen, made us forget all about the weather! We got a seat right under the gorgeous stuffed lion, and were greeted by the hilarious chef. I chose the jerk / teryaki chicken combo, and it was absolutely amazing - the best examples of both styles that I've ever had. My husband had the goat curry, which was also delicious and spiced just right for him - he'd told the chef "make me sweat, but don't make me cry", and that was exactly what he got! He's still raving about it more than two days later.
As we stood up to leave, the chef/owner yelled that because it was our first time we had to hear the story of the restaurant and of how Junior the lion came to be such a fixture. At the end, we were invited to sign that day's calendar entry and thus become part of the restaurant's history. A great touch, and we will be back for sure, bringing more new people with us!
Best jerk ever!!!. The jerk teriyaki combo is the best in Vancouver! Simply amazing!!! Real quality teriyaki - not just soy sauce and sugar crap... like real herby and not too sweet.
The service there is just hilarious - Ken and his wife really kno how to bring back customers!
Just beware the scotch bonnet peppers - it could burn the next day ;)
redd strripppee all the way!!
Relaxed, friendly atmoshphere. This place is great. The food is great for weekend breakfasts. The owner Ken is a great guy and the Lion's Den has a great friendly community vibe.
Try the breakfast roti, it's huge and delicious!
Funky Joint, Nice Owners. Definitely got a sweet East Van feel. Decent food but very very reasonable prices. It's got a lot personality and so do the owners. I'd definitely welcome another visit.
Good Food, Good Vibes, Good Place. This is Caribbean place so come prepared with the right attitude. These are REAL people serving REAL food so don't expect to get the fake chain restaurant smile every day. We all have bad days.
This being said it is a place you can count on to be the same every time. The coffee is good the food is good at a reasonable price and the service is like no other. So go to the Lions Den when you have some time, want to chill and Ken and Junko will make it an experience you will not soon forget!
Every time I leave I have a full belly, my wallet isn't empty and I am primed to "Have A Creative Day!"
Best Jerk Chicken. I love being able to walk into the Lion's Den and have Ken the owner and his wife Junko welcome us in as if we're sitting in their house. Seeing that they live above the restaurant its a perfect fit to feeling like we're in their house.
Anyways over that past couple of years I have learned that the jerk chicken will always be fantastic and the key to everything else is to ask what's just been made and then you'll have a winner.
As for Junior the lion, the story never gets old and I love bringing new people to the Lion's den so that they can sign the calendar and be told to have a creative day.
The people there are great regga and the best thing of all cheap. I say this is as good as the reef and maybe better (really if u are looking for a great Jamaican resturant go here)
The Lion’s Den Café is a fine example of a long-running restaurant that gets it right. They also serve Japanese-Caribbean fusion to boot. How did the Jerk Teriyaki Chicken Combo turn out? Read on to find out. Food: This might be the only Japanese-Caribbean (Japaribbean) fusion restaurant in the Lower Mainland. I ordered the signature dish: the Jerk Teriyaki Chicken Combo. Coming with a garden salad, the two chicken thighs were interesting. One thigh is smothered in a spicy jerk sauce while the other is drenched in a sweet teriyaki paste. An interesting combination to say the least, and it was cooked very well through. I also had the Lemonade Ting which was a carbonated lemon soda. The bottle was cute and it came with a separate glass to pour into. In terms of food, this was good but not the highlight of the restaurant. Features: A giant lion by the name of Junior watches over the restaurant which seats about 20. Try not to come with more than 4 guests. The restaurant owner gets every n

On a beautiful and sunny Sunday, I got to join up with Jessica & Mark , Sherman , Kim , and Karl (who I was please to meet for the first time!) at The Lions Den Cafe. Located in the triangular intersection between Fraser, Kingsway, and 15th Avenue, The Li
The Lion's Den Cafe has been in business for 10 years, but I only heard of it recently from other food bloggers. A Caribbean cafe with a preserved lion that also serves Okonomiyaki ? I am definitely intrigued. We st
Lions Den Cafe is probably, at best, a 12-15 capacity eatery. However, as the sun came out the afternoon we congregated at Lions Den, Karl showed up early and snagged a beautiful spot outside.
On first glance, it may seem like your regular neighborhood diner, but delving in deeper you soon realize its quirky and unique is its own special way, that should appeal to some and perhaps confuse others.
