Vij's Railway Express food truck in Vancouver is worth finding, and well worth the 3 hour drive from Seattle. We are in love with the Butter Chicken Schnitzel. The generous portion of crispy chicken with the heavenly spiced curry makes us swoon. It comes with basmati rice and naan. The Indian sodas make a great accompaniment. Vij's team members go out of their way to make you feel special. Thank you Jason and team! We will continue to make this food truck our first stop whenever we are in Vancouver and highly recommend others do the same
Tagging along on the brewery crawl yesterday, not a beer drinker but I am a curry lover. I was so happy to find your truck outside Off the Rail, I had the Kalonghi chicken, sooooooo good.
Had this at the Call To Action Conference. 2 of 2 days. Amazing food that looked better than the other food carts and then backed that up with amazing flavor.
the texture of the butter chicken schnitzel was incredible (i'm'a have to try to duplicate!) and the flavor was amazing. also, very polite crew and thank you so much for having Fanta! takes me back : )
Amazing butter chicken!! I've never had better.....:-)
We had the "staff meal", an array of five different dishes plus rice and naan. Almost too much food, but delicious! We had to wait a while for a table, but they seated us in the bar and it was nice there... plus, they kept coming around with trays of delightful little appetizers.
This place is not a traditional Indian restaurant, but the food is excellent. It’s offers an innovative take on Indian and North American cuisine. Everything we had was delicious! The goat was particularly good.
Vikram Vij is a legend in Vancouver and the city’s most famous celebrity chef. His restaurants are the first and last word in Indian cuisine in this town. On top of his four restaurants, a frozen food line in grocery stores, four books, and being an investor on the TV show Dragons' Den... He also has a food truck. Because of course he does.
I knew that I needed to track down this truck after seeing it in enRoute magazine’s Dining Guide 2016, named as Vancouver Magazine’s Best Food Cart 2016, and after seeing them on an episode of Eat St. As with most food trucks, social media is key. If you want to know where to find a truck, you’ve gotta get the tweet! I set out to find Vij's Railway Express on a Wednesday afternoon after they tweeted that they would be located Downtown. I found a parking spot directly in front of the truck which was very convenient. You’ll know the truck as soon as you see it because you won’t be able to miss the bright turquoise colour. There wasn’t a line up so the entire process was extremely quick and easy! The two gentlemen working in the truck were very friendly. They accept all forms of payment which also simplifies things. As with most food trucks, the menu is ever-changing. This is another good reason to check with social media, especially if you’re hoping to eat something specific. The goal of this truck is to serve as a creative exploration of the culinary diversity of India. They accomplish this well.
On the day of my visit there were three menu choices. Each of them sounded very good and I was really close to ordering the delicious-sounding cod cakes. However, for my first visit to the truck I thought that it would be wiser to try the Butter Chicken Schnitzel (Crispy breaded Fraser Valley chicken and rich tomato-fenugreek cream curry, garnished with mango raita. Served with cumin-basmati rice and naan - $12.50). Once my order was placed they took my name and my box of food was ready to go shortly after! This was a box bursting with colours and flavours. Right off the bat, you’ll notice the interesting fusion between Indian and Austrian cuisines. I’d never seen breaded chicken used in a curry, but for a food truck something like this makes so much sense. It’s the perfect place to try new ideas. I loved the tender slices of chicken and the breading was deliciously crispy and well seasoned. Throw some fragrant and spicy curry on top that? Yes please! The curry itself was expertly made. I loved the complex mix of spices which brought a bit of heat and a lot of flavour. I really enjoyed the dollup of raita on the side for a bit of a cooling element. The rice and the naan weren’t as exciting. The rice was very plain and the naan was very flat and dense, although it was seasoned nicely. I also used some of their housemade green hot sauce and it was very good. Overall, this was a fun and interesting dish that I enjoyed eating out of a box on the side of the street.
There weren’t many drinks to choose from and certainly nothing interesting like a chai or a lassi, so that was a bit of a disappointment. The food was pretty solid though. If you happen to come across Vij’s truck in your travels it would be worthwhile to hit them up.
Very good and full of flavours. This food truck was out in Abbotsford for the Fraser Valley food truck festival. There wasnt much in the way of selection. I did notice the chicken was preped well before hand, placed on a plate and stored below the counter and pulled out when an order came in. I would have thought the food would have been cooked to order not batched cooked
Vij's Railway Express is a food truck in Vancouver that specializes in Indian fusion food. They are Indian cuisine with modern and German twist with items like the naan wrap chicken schnitzel with butter chicken sauce. They also have a selection of Indian sodas like Limca, Thums Up Cola, and Fanta Orange.
You know, the whole food delivery service thing is starting to grow on me. Foodie Wednesday at our office has become something I look forward to, enough so that instead of working from home I’ll often find myself wanting to go in just for the delivered meals. Yes, it’s subsidized by our company so I still have to pay ~something~, but it’s usually cheaper than what you’d pay at the food truck itself PLUS it’s always a surprise in terms of what gets delivered. This week was a first for us where we got a delivery from Vij’s Railway Express which is food truck I’ve walked by several times on my numerous walks along 4th ave (they’re often posted up on the corner of 4th and Yew during the summer if memory serves me correctly). Having never eaten at Vij’s I figured this might make for an interesting introductory experience to his foods.
First time trying Vij's and it was a great experience. The food was delicious and fresh. Filled with flavour in the butter chicken schnitzel. Their railway express is a great way for people to give their food a try before walking into their restaurant. I'd highly recommend visiting this truck!
Quality and portion has dropped. Seared Pacific Cod in a Mango Sour Cream Curry with Cumin Basmati Rice and Naan, Citrus Zest Confit $12 3.5/5 - The curry was good but not excellent. The amount of the rice was on the smaller side. I had leftover fish and curry but not the rice.
Unfortunately, the quality and size are constantly decreasing. I remembered how good the butter chicken was when I first had it (Fall 2012). Portions were big that I could have it for lunch the next day. I understand that the prices of food has increased but still...
Good, Good, Good. It's hard to say something nice about a Vikram Vij operation without sounding like a total groupie. Truth is though, this food is excellent. True to Form Vikram doesn't cheap out by simply calling his creations "fusion" he genuinely develops an authentic cuisine to new heights. It's really hard not to appreciate the creativity shown by the chef and the care given into the creation of the food. I think that sometimes people become far to blasee about successful chefs in their city and as a result they don't get their due. As the saying goes "Haters gonna Hate".
This is a must try. Even at 11-13$ for food truck fare, when you've eaten these creations, you won't have even noticed the price.
Mobile review. The Butter chicken dish is very good, I really like how the chicken is breaded and also how there is this slight mango kick to it. The naan is good to. But i mean 13 bucks for a foodcart meal?
Halibut Curry perfection! Sad drink incident :(. I ordered the Halibut on a cooks recommendation, so glad! It was delicious. Well developed flavour, clean tasting, large pefectly cooked portion of fish, fragrant rice and crisp veg. If it had been on a white plate in a fine restaurant I would have been happy. A little expensive for me as a weekly lunch $17 for this dish and an Iced Chai (this will be for a treat) Unfortunately the cool bag my Chai came in burst and on my way back to the office I ended up wearing my tea. They still get great reviews fom me when asked even if I did spend the latter half of my day kind of sticky.
Loved it!. I was surprised to learn that Vikram and team had created a food truck and was delighted to find it at the Trout Lake farmers market today. We tried the coconut chicken curry and the lamb kebab with the lemon ginger sparkling drink. It was all delicious and only took about 10 minutes (and it was noon). Staff was friendly and I really liked hearing them give a shout out to their tomato grower (" if you enjoy the tomatoes you can get them from the stall down there..."). Branding looks wonderful too. I wish them much success! I encourage everyone to get out and support this Vancouver gem!
Very good. This food truck is great and well organized. My boyfriend and I waited less than 10 minutes for our food. We got to try a sample of the cassava fries which were delicious and our food was piping hot. I had the halibut coconut masala with rice and naan. The naan was great but the halibut was a bit bland and the curry wasn't as flavorful as I was hoping for. I felt like it needed a little heat or something to kick it up a notch. My boyfriend had the lamb and it was fantastic. Very flavorful and oh so juicy! Although I was a wee disappointed with my curry I had a good experience and recommend people try it out!
Samples and Deliciousness. The minute we got to the cart, Vij himself was making sure everyone was satisfied. We weren't even in the line for 3 minutes before he came around with samples of their cassava fries (my favorite!!). I ordered the lamb which came with a side of salad, and it was quite tasty.
Vij really cares about his customers and goes out of his way to see that you are enjoying your food. The price for lunch (lamb and I shared cassava fries for $13) was very reasonable considering that his restaurant near granville and broadway is very upscale!! Overall, 5/5 on the customer service, and definitely worth a try!
Loved it, worth standing in line for. It was pretty awesome seeing Vij work the line greeting all of us as we picked up orders. I waited roughly 30mins (during lunch rush) for my chicken curry and ginger drink, but it was well worth it! The naan bread was amazing and so flavorful on its own, The curry was heavenly, not too spicy, just a subtle hint of spice. It was just soooooooooooooooooo good!
This January, Vij's food truck won the People's Choice Award for best new restaurant by Enroute Magazine. Some 35,000 people voted from a list of 35 restaurants deemed to be the best new openings in Canada by food professionals. This was the first time a food truck was included on the list.
Vj's Railway Express is a food truck that was built upon the success of Vj's, a fine dining Indian restaurant in West Van! For a food truck, the food is definitely priced at a premium, with the cheapest meal being $13! I'm going to tell you guys the truth, I've actually never tried VJ'S before haha (I know, shocking right?!) So I can't really compare the food to the actual restuarant (but I'm pretty positive the real Vj's is leagues better haha!) Butter Chicken 3/5 stars The butter chicken is one of the most popular dishes on the menu! Personally, I felt that this dish fell short of the hype surrounding this food truck. While the chicken was aromic with plenty of spices, it was rather dry and hard in texture. The naan wasn't springy enough, and was a bit dry as well. I really liked the basmati rice though, it was super fragrant and had been cooked properly! I'll definitely have to go and experience the real Vj's haha! But I have no one to go with...sigh, none of my friends or my asian
This food truck, part of Vikram Vij and Meeru Dhalwala’s celebrated Indian restaurant collection, dishes out a large portion of salty, deep-fried yuca with tamarind chutney for $8. These fries are drier and starchier than the potato kind. Cassava fries are both crispy and creamy, but it’s the seasoning and chutney that really make them something special here. The seasoning includes fenugreek, salt, chili powder, and garam masala, according to staff at the food truck. Vij’s Railway Express tends to draw a crowd. (Stephen Hui) There’s a couple of other vegan items on the menu, including a colourful rice puff chickpea salad ($9.50). Although the vegan options aren’t labelled
On top of the perfectly seasoned cassava fries is a Fenugreek cream curry (fenugreek is a healthy herb/spice), anise infused bacon bits and house made paneer (an Indian fresh cheese)...
Vij’s Railway Express is very much representative of Vij’s Restaurant. You get the same quality of ingredients and creativity that you come to expect from dining at Vij’s and Rangoli. And it’s certainly a treat to be able to grab some Vij’s to go, downtown, and at a lower price point.
One of THE MOST moist kebabs we've ever had and the spices?? Wow. I don't know what the spice blend is and I probably will never be able to figure it out. What I do know is that this lamb is super delicious and Mr. Piglet can't wait for me to finish my few bites so he can have the rest. Jerk. The vegetables are forgettable in comparison... as I write now, I'm salivating while I recall the lamb and I have no idea what the vegetables tasted like except it had red flecks and reminded me a but of Korean marinated/pickled vegetables but without the same kick. It's all about the lamb here.

Ten years after Vij’s opened and its popularity boomed they then ventured to open Rangoli located next door to Vij’s which is a more casual style of food which you would find on the dinner table of an Indian family, while Vij’s is more similar to Indian food cooked for occasions and events with VIP treatment without the VIP price. Not that I know by experience I have yet to dine at either Vij’s or Rangoli, nor have I traveled to India But before I lose you…I have eaten at Vij’s Railway Express! A playful food truck emitting aromas of curry and lamb located at 1075 West Georgia just down from the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver and the Vancouver Art Gallery.
We ordered the Butter Chicken Schnitzel ($14), which came with rice and naan. Wow. Despite its small metal frame, Vij’s Railway produces food just as stellar as the bistro. The impeccable curry didn’t sit for long on the schnitzel, so the chicken was still crispy after snapping photos.
I ordered a ginger lemon drink ($3.50). The drink is made with a lemon ginger syrup and sparkling water. It was refreshing and tart with a subtle ginger flavour. For my lunch I ordered the halibut in coconut masala curry ($11.50). This comes on a bed of rice and with a slice of naan. The pieces of halibut were small, but they were moist and seasoned to pe
The food truck isn’t always located at the same place so I would strongly recommend visiting their twitter before you step out to give them a try. When I got there at 12:30… you know its prime time lunch hours and the line up was long! I think I probably waited around 20 minutes in total for paying and picking up (which is quite some time considering 1 hr lunches and walking back to the office). Their menu is quite advanced, using LED screens to show their menu :P unlike the other food trucks with a billboard style menu.
In the end, Vij’s Railway Express is certainly a noteworthy addition to the crop of food trucks permeating the downtown scene in Vancouver. It may not be able to encapsulate the original restaurant or the slaw of true Asian street food, but it did capture the stares of pedestrians passing by...
On the third week of Food Truck Mondays , Andy and I went to the new food truck operated by a popular restaurant: Vij's Railway Express . Vij's is one of the most famous restaurants in Vancouver and is nationally recognized. Sadly, I have never been, but I have been to its sister (and cheaper) restaurant, Rangoli's. Vij's Railway Express is located on Georgia, in between Burrard and Thurlow, and in front of Coast Capital Savings. The menu is supposed to vary daily, with the menu listed on a television. They're fancy like that. This is yet again another fairly large operation for a food truck, similar to Mom's Grilled Cheese . This one a bit more formal though and all the chefs inside were wearing proper garb. Andy ordered the Kashmiri Chai ($3.50) , which he found to be too sweet. He also ordered the Lucknow lamb kebabs,
Ok. It’s official. Vancouver’s street food has game. With the opening of so many new street food trucks, the food speaks for itself. Each truck has brought its own flavour and expertise to the scene, but no one has stepped it up quite like Vikram Vij. Any food aficionado worth his/her salt is familiar with that name. With ownership of the ever so popular Vij’s restaurant on W 11th and Rangoli’s, Mr. Vij doesn’t need to prove himself in this town to anyone. So why the truck? His answer: Why not? He tells me it’s his passion for the foods of his homeland that made him embark on this venture. He wants you to experience the real India and all her flavours. Each region of India has its own traditional dishes, he explains to me, (hence the name Vij’s Railway Express). Just like the railway stations in India, this truck will take you on a culinary adventure, with menus changing daily. But He doesn’t want to rest on his own laurels. He wants you to come out and experience the food yourself. Th
Vij’s samosa was absolutely delicious and crispy with steaming hot potatoes and peas inside. It was quite tasty and plump. Their cassava fries were also great for munching on, but the lamb kebab was just okay.
This menu no doubt is on the pricey side, but when you combine the food and experience, it was definitely worth the 20-minute wait and the $15 that I spent. It lives up to my expectations, and I’m now ready to go line up at Vij’s!
