I love this place. I usually get the khao soi soup.. which is amazing! The beef drunken noodles are also super delicious. Try this place if you have the chance.
Relaxing lunch. Came in for lunch and specials still on after 2pm which we found excellent. Noticed off the bat that the restaurant and relaxing stress free environment (really comforting). We ordered pad thai with chicken. The pad thai had a delicious sweet taste to it. Noodles cooked very well full of flavour. We also ordered yellow curry with tofu. The curry itself was veey aromatic and loaded with flavour making our lunch great.
Five Stars. I've been to Thailand twice, have many Thai friends and love Thai food. I enjoy all the regional types, North, Northeast, Cental and South. Lanna can do it all perfectly. (Lanna Thai and Thai Box 2 Go in New West are my favourite Thai restaurants.)
My favourites are: Tom Ka Gai, laap, veggies spring rolls, and whatever the chef recommends.
Small restaurant (8 tables). The servers are young Thai girls who always welcome you with a genuine smile. Service is prompt and the food is always hot.
I don't like spicy hot food and they always prepare it to exactly as I request.

Wonderful find!. We were visiting Vancouver from Toronto and looking for a Thai restaurant that would suit 7 adults' taste (some like spicy, some mild) and found Lanna Thai, quite by chance, when walking up Denman St. Our server spoke limited English (she is attending school to study English) but the service was excellent and we had no problems expressing what we wanted. The food was delicious. A Thai food afficionado declared the Tom Yum (hot & sour soup) to be the best he'd had. The pad Thai was nicely spiced for those who like mild. The Pad Med Mamuang (chicken with chili paste, cashews, peppers) had a nice "hum". Despite the fact there is only one chef, the food arrived relatively quickly, one after the other, and was piping hot. The owner/chef was genuinely pleased when we expressed our delight with the food she had prepared. The decor and music was very pleasant and relaxing. We would recommend giving this restaurant a try and will visit again when next in Vancouver.
Tried it out. I went to this restaurant today because one of my friends recommended a very unique dish that available at this restaurant. I already know that the owner (and chef) is a very good cook, so there is no doubt that the food are going to be very good here.
If you are looking for Northern Thai dishes, this is where to enjoy your meal. All their food are good, the only thing that I think could be adjusted is that the portion of the meal could be a little bigger than the current portion served to their clients.
Otherwise, cute little place, nice to relax and enjoy your quick meal. If you are going to have friends with you, should call and reserve the seats as it is not a big place but I am very sure you all will have a great time.
Since the chef is one of the fine chef in our town, if you don't like the food, it is either because you are not really familiar with the thai food or you don't really know what to order. My suggestion is for you to the server or the owner what is good or famous menu there, tell them exactly what are the conditions that you are looking for, if you cannot eat spicy, tell them, do not blame the restaurant!
Authentic and Delicious. I've just returned from living in Bangkok. Lanna Thai is the closest thing I've found to the true flavours of Thailand. I've been on numerous occasions and never been disappointed. I took a Thai visitor last week and they raved about it.
Best of all, the owner/chef is a delight. She does all the cooking herself, and prepares everything from scratch (including even ice cream sometimes). She used tomatoes fresh her garden when they were in season.
Because it's all from scratch and she works alone in a small kitchen, it can sometimes take a while. Also the food comes thai-style, ie it's brought out when it's ready, not in any fixed sequence of courses.
I like the larb gai and the gaeng hung lay, but I've also enjoyed some other northern dishes I had not tried in Bangkok. All delicious.
Excellent Papaya salad. Very fresh and tasty, medium spicy worked for me.
Also tried the beef larb, rice and spring rolls ..yum, I'll be back.
Best Thai in Vancouver!!. I absolutely love Lanna Thai! Since discovering it two months ago, I have returned at least once a week. The food is very authentic and everything is fresh and spiced to perfection! I was also impressed that all the herbs and most of the vegetables are home grown!
To anyone who is giving this place BAD review based on taste, either you have never been to Thailand and are used to eating "american" thai food or you are clearly the competition because everything here is amazing and melt in your mouth good.
I bring all of my well-travelled friends here and their experienced palates agree, this thai is better than any place in Vancouver.
I hope the owner can hire more staff, as it is a bit of wait but well worth it!
Personal favourites: Beef Larb, Northern (Chiang Mai) style curry and the Papaya Salad!
Proper Thai food!. For those of you who have travelled throughout Thailand, this is the place to transport you back! It is authentic, well crafted and makes you happy.
Interestingly, there was quite a few actual Thai people eating there which should validate its "Thainess".
One of the most delightful things about this restaurant is the fact that the Chef (and we think restaurant owner) grows almost all the herbs and some of the vegetables used in the dishes. She showed us pictures of her little garden with all the unique Thai herbs, so lovely.
The food is predominantly the flavours of Northern Thailand. However, they do have dishes from their other regions. We ordered a Massaman curry from Southern Thailand and it was reminiscent of the curries we sampled in Ko Lanta. Delicious! Recommend all the northern Thai curries as well. Most excellent!
We're not fans of Phad Thai (even in Thailand) primarily as it seems like the typical tacky tourist fare so cannot attest to it being good or not.
We tried their summer special - Zucchini Flowers (grown by the chef) stuffed with pork and other cunning Thai flavours. It was of course, superb.
The restaurant itself is tiny and unassuming but they have done a really great job of making it "nice". The décor is simple, the restaurant clean and tidy. The server is so sweet and run off her feet as it appears to be just one server and just one cook most of the time. Don't expect anything quick, but it really is worth the wait. Incredibly polite people and happy to accommodate.
Our one complaint is the lack of Morning Glory Stems (or Phak Boong in Thai, or Tong Choi in Cantonese) on the menu. HOWEVER, much to our delight if you call ahead and book and request this quintessential Thai vegetable dish they will get it in and cook it oh so perfectly. Please, do this so that they will add it to the menu in the future! This also applies to Sticky rice and Mango dessert. Not on the menu, but you can request it and if they can get yummy mangoes they will.
Please go and support this wonderful little place. Enjoy!
BEST Thai place in town. As a Thai person, I strongly recommend this place for an authentic Thai taste with best quality ingredients (they even use canola oil instead of usual vegetable oil!)
They specialize in Northen Thai food, so if you are looking for something with sticky rice, this is a MUST GO!!!
Although there are tons of things that are left out of the menu, you can always ask the server for dishes that are not there (including Jackfruit salad, Bambooshoot salad, Namprik Noom or Namprik Ong, if you know what I'm talking about)
So far, this is the only place in town that offers these dishes. And it totally nails it with a taste from home. :)
For me, though it's small and quite busy at times, go there during weekdays when it's more calm and quiet.
They only have one cook (who's also the owner) and one server with a really small kitchen, so it's understandable why it's quite slow sometimes.
Anyways, it's worth the wait.
Stepping into Lanna Thai must be like stepping into Thailand – if Thailand was a tiny, cute restaurant squeezed in between other tiny, cute restaurants on one of Vancouver’s busiest streets. Greenery, Thai art, Buddha statues, and miniature waterfalls all set to the gentle flowing sounds of spa music are what greet you as you enter. After first being introduced to Lanna Thai two years ago, it has since been “my secret Thai place” – that is until tonight, when I asked two friends to join BoyToy and I for dinner. Let’s consider this my good deed for the year. A quick glance around the restaurant tells me this place may still be my secret for just a little longer because we are the only people seated. It seems much of their business comes from takeout orders since people seem to be trickling in and out carrying cartons of food as the night progresses. This is just fine with me since I’d hate to have to find a new secret Thai place just because of a little overcrowding. (Who am I kiddi
The Beef Laab (also known as Larb) is unbelievable. It’s spicy as hell but is perfectly balanced with mint, basil, toasted rice and lime. If you are with more than 2 people I would recommend getting 2 orders as this dish will disappear fast.
Lanna Thai is this tiny, tiny restaurant close to the corner of Robson and Denman. Seriously, you blink and you miss it. They specialize in Northern Thai Cuisine. To be honest, I was crossing the street to try out a different restaurant when I stumble upon it. It’s been awhile since I’ve had Thai food, so I decided to give it a go. On the table: Som Tum (Papaya Salad) $10.95 It’s a small portion for 10 bucks, but then again what was I expecting Downtown Vancouver? The salad was super spicy. I saw on the menu it had two chillies beside it, but I can handle my heat (I’m usually a three chillies kindda girl). Man oh man was it ever spicy! Word to the wise: when ordering here, make sure that you go down one level from your spice tolerance, because whatever they’re using, they’re using the good stuff! I’m saddened to report that the spice overpowered all the other flavours, so I can’t really comment on anything but the fact that the papaya was fresh and crispy. Next dish – Turkey Satays ($
The Beef Larb is absolutely perfect! Toasted rice, mint, basil, shallots and chili, limey goodness.
