My son and I were off to watch a movie and he suggested going to Canra to eat given that two of his close friends are from Sri Lankan descent. The lassie and vegan dishes I had were delicious. My son had bbq chicken with rice and vegetables with his lassie. The staff person was friendly and kind. I recommend visiting this place when you are around!
By far the best Authentic Sri Lankan food in town. I highly recommend the prawn curry, pineapple curry and cashew curry. The owners are very friendly and work very hard to ensure you are satisfied with your meal. I would definately like to come back to this place on my next visit from Australia.
This place is amazing! Made from scratch and the owners love what they do! Wonderful people!
Great food, very reasonable prices, and great service. They take time to cook your food from scratch and with no MSG. Really more like a restaurant located in a food court, rather than the regular food court fare.
Awesome authentic Sri Lanka food... Will surely go back again
Super impressed. For $20 both my girlfriend and I got am excellent meal, and service beyond what you find in most restaurants, let alone in a food court!
What nobody would line up for food at this Srilankan food stall?? It was so good, delicious and authentic!! If you like asian, Indian and Srilankan food, you must come here and try their food.
We ordered a dish of egg roti and plain roti with curry chicken and biryani with chicken, eggplant moju, fried egg and pickle as well as a cup of hot chai tea. OMG! They were really good and at a very reasonable and affordable price! Ask for mild spicy if you cannot eat very spicy food. I particularly loved the hot chai tea. They added ginger to it. It was way better than the chai tea at Starbucks and any other cafes.
There is an underground parkade at Tinseltown. Take an elevator up to the food court. You will be able to find this food stall called Canra Srilankan. I am not sure what else I can describe to you. You must try and experience it yourself!! If I will be in this neighbourhood again, I will definitely come back and try other dishes :P
Don't be fooled by the food court location. The food is what it's all about. I lived in Sri Lanka for six months. This is the real deal.
We've eaten here several times. We've grabbed quick meals before hitting the movies. I've had them cater lunch at my office and they've delivered to our house when we treated friends to Sri Lankan flavours. Everyone we introduce to the dishes raves.
Canra offers a full range of Sri Lankan dishes from curries to Kotu Rotti to string hoppers to egg hoppers to dosa to biryani... Obviously some dishes appeal to some more than others, but they are all good. If you're not familiar with the dishes they will gladly explain. Be sure to specify your spice level. Sri Lankan food can be very spicy - VERY spicy. Canra accommodates Canadian palates but if you want the real Sri Lankan experience let them know.
The owners are delightful people and will go out of their way to make sure you enjoy your Sri Lankan experience.
Food Court ambience - ah, it's a food court
Food - 5 star
Service - 5 star
Delivery/Catering - 5 star
Tasty and fresh food. You will definitely love it.
The owner Mahindra came to us while we were eating to ensure that we were satisfied with the food. Excellent customer service that you will never get from a fast food place.
I've only tried the lamb dosa but it was great! Condiments served complimented the flavours well! Great value, friendly service and well balanced flavours. You can call ahead for pick up and they take debit!
In Metro Vancouver, there are only just a few places that serve Sri Lankan food. In fact, a quick search on Zomato for Sri Lankan food yields only five results. Located inside the International Village food court is one hidden gem that should not be missed. Canra Srilankan serves delicious, comforting, homemade style Sri Lankan food that is budget friendly. You know how people like to say for authentic Italian cuisine that it tastes as good as the way nonna makes it? Well, think of it like that for Canra except Sri Lankan-style. This three-generation family-owned and operated business has the grandmother in the kitchen. Here is a review of what my experiences at Canra Sri Lankan Plus.
My friend and I were visiting Vancouver from Seattle and simply stumbled upon this gem of a restaurant in the food court of the mall closest to our hotel. We were delighted with the variety of textures and flavors the proprietress laid before us, grateful for her understanding and accommodation of my friend's veganism, fascinated by the things she had to tell us about the exotic foods we consumed with enthusiasm, and amazed by the kindness and generosity that we were gifted with that day.My friend had broken her arm while biking along the sea wall the day before and the meal we had at Canra Sri Lanka Plus went a long way toward restoring our spirits before we traveled home.
Hands down one of my favourite places to eat in all of Vancouver.
The food is always delicious and flavourful. The owner is the sweetest lady ever! She remembers me and often comes out to talk!! She's also given me some samples as well.
The food is amazing and it's well priced.
I love Canra!!! I tell everyone about it!
Still in search of good eats on a budget, I was recommended Canra Srilankan Plus in International Village / Tinseltown by their high ratings on Zomato and Yelp. I'm a sucker for roti, so I went with "today's special": Egg Roti + Plain Roti, with curry ($5.49 for lentil curry, $6.49 for chicken curry).
Consistently unbelievable, no MSG, authentic spices that can only come from a 3 generation family run gem of a place. Standouts are Biryani (I love spicey hot + chicken dark meat + eggplant), Kottu Roti (Spicey hot chopped roti with fresh vegies & meat + egg) & Sri Lankan tea. All board items cooked fresh as you order but yummy pre-prepared to go items as well.
I started coming here because of convenience and good reviews, now it's embarrassing the amount of times I've been. The prices are so cheap, just thinking of visiting this place again bring me joy since moving back to the West coast.
Pay food court prices, but get top notch food and service ...
I am of Sri Lankan origin, and I brought my non-Sri Lankan friends here while on a trip to Vancouver. I couldn't have picked a better place have my friends try Sri Lankan food.
Food:
We tried the Chicken Kottu, Dosa with Chicken, and Biryani with eggplant moju along with mango lassi.
The kottu was the best I have had in ages. It was full of flavor. The only improvement would be to have a bit more veggies. Dosa was freshly made and delicious. Biryani was a little bit too greasy for my preference, but delicious nonetheless. The mango lassi was not too sweet like the ones I have had at Indian restaurants.
Service:
The owner Mahindra came to us while we were eating to ensure that we were satisfied with the food. Talk about good customer service. I have never had that service from a fast food place.
A pleasant surprise!. Was really hungry and looking for a decent meal before the movie with not much time to spare. We checked out all the regular sad booths and came upon this new Sri Lankan one. So took a chance and were amply rewarded. Good spice to your liking, and tasty, yummy food, we had the veg. biriyani, next time will try the dosas. Great to have this place nearby, maybe no need to head out to Fraser St. when the urge for dosa strikes. For sure try this place, if you like S. Asian food you won't be disappointed!
Great food, good price, one must know the taste of paradise. We are a Sri Lankan family.. not to mention how much we missed our food back home, We found the place last weekend. We ate then and there and she nicely wrapped meal for our children too. If you are a Sri Lankan, Asian, South Asian and like South Asian spicy cuisine, this is a good place to try them in Vancouver conveniently located in the international village food court. The lamb Kottu and Dosai were great generous portions and good value for the money spent.
H family
Nice snack after a movie, try their tea!!. I felt it was very good, although not great. My dosa was moister and sweeter than I prefer (I think that perhaps this style is different from what I like) and the filling (masala) didn't have a homogeneous temperature. The flavours were quite pleasing and not overdone. Their chai tea is one of the best I've had around here. I didn't like all the styrofoam they use and the tip prompting (it's a food court right?) was odd to me. I do consistently leave tips, don't get me wrong. But it seems that more and more places are prompting for tips nowadays where the nature of the place (food court, counter coffee etc.) indicates very minimal service. I'll leave loonies, maybe a toonie or something in a tip jar but I feel sort of cheap leaving that on the debit machine. lol.
Yesterday, my parents and I had the privilege of eating dinner at Canra Srilankan Plus. As we are originally from Sri Lanka, we thought that the food truly represented the authentic Sri Lankan taste, especially the kottu roti (chopped roti with meat and vegetables along with Sri Lankan seasonings and spices. It was very refreshing to taste the rich mixture of spices that you can only get from a Sri Lankan meal. The biriyani was very delicious as well, with a variety of vegetables prepared in a Sri Lankan style and being a Sri Lankan, this food definitely was mouth watering and reminded me of the authentic taste Sri Lankan food has. The customer service was extraordinary, and they go out of their way to make sure that you understand how each Sri Lankan dish is prepared and will adjust the Sri Lankan spice mixture to suit your needs. To top it up, the vatilappam (a Sri Lankan dessert similar to a pudding) was very delicious and is definitely worth a try. I highly recommend giving this restaurant a try if you are in the area!
Excellent, genuine Sri Lankan cuisine. We recently visited Vancouver from Northern BC and my wife, who is pregnant, has been craving string hoppers with pol sambol and kiri hodi which is something that is impossible to get in the North (or many other places!) She did her research and found this place online so we called ahead and ordered some.
We were incredibly surprised to find this restaurant. It's a family-run food court restaurant in the same mall as a big cinema. As I am of Sri Lankan background and I visit there frequently, I know what to look for when it comes to Sri Lankan food. It's very different from Indian and other Southeast Asian cuisine and it's quite difficult to get the real deal. This place is authentic. We collected our string hoppers, which are nests of rice noodles, and they were perfect. They come with pol sambol, which is a condiment made of chilli peppers and coconut mixed with lime and spices, and kiri hodi, which is a coconut-based curry gravy. You have to order these 24 hours in advance for Fridays and Saturdays, but they are definitely worth ordering. They certainly satisfied my wife's cravings.
We also tried their curries which were excellent. The eggplant curry was really fresh and not oily like Indian food can be. The paratha (flat bread) was fresh and had great texture. We also had cutlets, which are like a deep fried fish ball, and they were great. Again, very authentic. We finished the meal with watallapam which is the Sri Lankan version of creme caramel. It's spicy, nutty and sweet.
The service was excellent and we felt very welcomed, especially considering that it is a restaurant in a food court. We would highly recommend it and we'll definitely be going back the next time we're in Vancouver!
There's no place like mom's kitchen.... Mouth watering taste... warmth and freshness of the food... the smell of spices... together with the typical Sri Lankan warm welcome..... reminds me my mom's kitchen; thousands of kilometers away. A vast variety of Sri Lankan delicious taste, can be enjoyed by people from all over the world. Kottu roti, dosa, buriyani, and a lot more...for afordable price; in a friendly dinning place.
Family-run Sri Lankan Cuisine. If you are a Sri Lankan, missing food back at home or a fan of South Asian spicy cuisine, this is a great place to try in Vancouver. It's located in the international village food court, so we decided to try it after a movie. The chicken biriyani, kottu and then the dessert watalappam were delicious. Generous portions with so much spices! Run by a friendly family. Good value for the price!
Authentic & Family-run. If you want to know what Sri Lankan food tastes like, try this place! Do not assume that it is the same as Indian food. It is not. Sri Lankan food is unique so if you're adventurous, give it a try. I actually lived in Sri Lanka for more than seven years so I can tell you with some authority that the food here is truly authentic. Although this restaurant is located in a food court, it is not your typical food court food. This is a small family business run by Sri Lankans so what you're getting is basically the same thing that you'd get if you were in Sri Lanka and were invited over to a local person's house for dinner. Even though this restaurant is located in Vancouver, they use most of the same ingredients, particularly when it comes to the spices. Plus, the owners are super friendly. If you want to try something just to get an idea of the taste, they will probably give you a sample free of charge.
Great comfort food -- from a food court!. (Ate here on a Saturday afternoon, late September or early October 2013) Had the kottu rotti with fish, spicy edition. Wow. All the heat, flavor, texture, quantity I could ask for, all at a reasonable price. Fantastic comfort food on a rainy Vancouver afternoon. Wish you could order this stuff for delivery. I'd probably never leave the house again.
Great restaurant, great food and amazing service.
Definitely one of the best and very affordable places to grab a quick and filling bite. Carefully picked spices blend into an authentic taste of Sri Lanka.
I had their biryani which was amazing. For dessert I had their watalappang which was equally delicate.
You can pick how spicy you want your food.
Even though you will be at a mall food court their customer service is exceptional. You will be approached by the owner to ask how your food is which I don't think has ever happened in any other food court.
If you are in vancouver make sure to make your way to this place and try some of their great food.
Amazing food!. Just by chance, I discovered an amazing cuisine today! I ordered vegetarian dosa, it came with a delicious soup and coconut and tomatoes chutney and they also served some pineapple dish and a lentil dish for me to try, oh and some coconut cake! And a yummy tapioca dessert! Oh my gosh, a feast at a mall food court! Spice combinations were delicate and fresh, I found it very original and different but not difficult tastes at all! Also one of the best chai I ever had! I will take my friends with me next time! Thank you!
Very Good Food. Me and my friend were on the way to a film at tinseltown, and boy were we surprised when we hit Canra. The service is exceptional, and the chef/ owner was very helpful with explaining to us the Sri Lankan Cuisine. Being A frequent Tinseltown visitor I had always wanted to try Canra, but I wish I had tried earlier since the Food is so good. The kothu Roti is cooked right in front of you with fresh roti +Vegetables + Meat..... And the Dosa that we ordered was also very good as it was crisp on the outside and so soft on the inside. They now have one very happy regular Customer! (:
Food court gem. Went to Canra this evening for a quick pre-movie meal. This place is totally worth a visit. I had the masala dosa and Sri Lankan iced coffee. My friend had the biryani with chicken and mango lassi. Everything was great. The biryani was pleasantly cardamon scented and the masala dosa was yummy. Both the drinks were great too. But what made this place a real standout from the usual soulless food court fare was the owner/chef. She asked my friend if he would like pineapple in his dish (he was thrilled as he loves pineapple) and then came out of the kitchen to tell me that what looked like meat in my dish was actually soya which she added for protein. Then mid-meal she returned to ask how we like everything and to chat about the ingredients. I love that kind of passion and dedication, so two thumbs up!
Great food, friendly staff. I've been to Canra a few times and each time I'm greeted warmly. The food is always great, and I highly recommend the mango lassi.
The fish biryani was great! Made to order (i.e. not sitting around under a heart lamp). You can specify how spicy you want it and it came with lots of little extra like pickles and a deep fried egg. Friendly staff too.
Delicious!!!!. I absolutely love Canra - usually go there once a week. The authentic spices paired with home cooked food is divine. All the ingredients are fresh and the food is made to order. The portions are generous and the prices are unbeatable. The entrees are rustic, warm, and earthy while the condiments are cool and refreshing ... you have to try this place!
Very aunthentic and delicious. Being South Indian and a visitor to Vancouver, I was excited to see this restaurant. It had been a while since I'd eaten Kothu Roti so it was the first thing I ordered and was not disappointed. It was delicious! The amount served is a lot too which is always a plus.
We came back twice after that and had the chicken dosa, lamb dosa and cutlets. All very good and filling but my favourite would be the Kothu Roti.
The staff were very friendly and as another reviewer mentioned, we were impressed by the teen taking our orders.
Love this food. We had a social event at our work and by suggestion of one of our co-worker we ordered Sri Lankan food from Canra.
We ordered: Appetizers -cutlets, coconut roti; Vegetable soup; Egg plant moju; Curry (chicken, fish); Saffron chicken rice; Paratha roti with tomato curry; Chicken dosa; Kottu roti (chicken, lamb, veggie); Biryani (chicken, veggie); Dessert-watalappan, tapioca.
Guys, all items were SUPER! Everything was very tasty and flavorful. Everyone enjoyed food. I especially liked all rotis and Egg plant moju and Saffron chicken rice.
The price was great, the portions were big enough.
We went there last weekend, didnt know what to expect and were pleasantly surprized by a great feast we had! The owners were very friendly and were kind to suggest their best dishes. We had vegetarian dosas that were amazing! We also tried a few other dishes the name of which I cant recall - all I know they were delicious! Everything was flavourful, homemade like and very appetizing. If you would like to experiment and try something new - check out Canra!
A must eat place. I discovered Canra about 3 months after they first opened. It was different owners at the time. I could not believe how good the food was and frequented it all the time. Then i invited many of my friends to try. They all said it was amazing.
The friendly service and care is the first thing one experiences there.......which continued even more when the present owners bought Canra. Service can be a bit slower than other places in the food court, but i do not mind because i know that they make many of the things from scratch - old school authentic style. That is what gives the great flavors. Since i am Sri Lankan i know that some of these dishes take time to make.
I love the flavor of the yellow rice. It really is authentic. I eat both their Western fair just as much as the Sri Lankan food: depending on my craving that day. I have eaten many different kinds of ethnic food at various eathing establishments, but always my go to place is Canra.
Because i frequent there a lot they make sure my desires catered to. I love that ...especially because it would be horribly boring eating the same things over and over. I notice that there are people that go almost every day to buy food there. I saw that they make special arrangements with them, like making certain special dishes that are not in the menu, which is a bonus.
Consistency of flavor could be improved, (which i notice with many Indian and Sri Lankan restaurants re. their ethnic food. western food is always same taste each time). I think depending on who cooks, the flavor can be slightly different. Some days food can be better than others. But the next time you go it will be back to the same taste. The friendliness and care they show truly enhance my desire to eat that food over and over- and i have been purchasing delicious food there all these years.
EXCELLENT FOOD!!!. The food here was amazing and very friendly staff!!! Being a sri lankan I did not expect to get such super sri lankan food in vancouver! Dosa was super and the buffet which I had! FAB!! keep it up!
Good Food At Good Price. Good Food And Very Tasty And the Price is reasonable.
Excellent. Really nice place, not fast food in a fast food court, quality ingredients, scrumptious food and very friendly service. Also, really economical. Extremely satisfied, would go back again.
Delicious!. This is our new favorite spot for Srilankan food. We had vege kothu roti and biryani and loved the food!! The staff's really friendly too!! We got complimentary dessert.. also yummy!
Delicious. The food was great and the staff were friendly. I highly recommend!
Yummy. Great food!! I recommend the cutlets, roti and dosa.
Good food. Good quality food with some nice spice. The price is reasonable and the service is great. I recommend it to anyone who feels like something different.
Excellent food! Recommend the Kotto, Dosa and the Biryani! Also, ask for "chinese rolls" - they are amazing!
Dinner at Canra Srilankan. This was the best ethnic food I have had in a really long time. I was so impressed. What a taste sensation, spicy and delicious. I was looking for something to eat after work and had no idea what I was in for: authentic Sri Lankan food plus a dessert that I never imagined having right here in Vancouver. You have got to go and just try it!
Thank you thank you thank you! Having a tough to e eating on this Wild Rose cleanse I couldn't believe how helpful te people at Canra were! Not only Di they not mind explaining what was in each dish but they offered to make me brown rice the next town I came if I called them in advance! I have eaten there before and the food is pretty damn good for mall fare and is a great option for veg heads and carnivores too! Get a frequent flyer card and your 11th meal is free!!
My First Time Srilankan Food and LOVE it already!. My sister and I decided to try Srilankan food at Tinseltown after reading the online reviews about Canra. We never tried Srilankan food, and we LOVED it from this first time! The two ladies from Canra were very helpful. They were very friendly and explained very well about each dishes. We had the Rotti and Fish Roll as appetizer, and Chicken Dosa and Chicken biryani as main and Watalappan for dessert. Yes, we went for full course to try true Srilankan Cuisine! :)
It took about 5-10min to prepare but I liked that part since I know that they were making everything from scratch, not microwaving like some other places. We really liked the Rotti and the Dosa and Biryani and the Watalappan! Rotti was served with a side of curry to dip, and Dosa was nice and crispy with really well marinated chicken, and Biryani was just amazing! I mean AMAZING~ it comes with eggplant, chicken, well spiced little cubes of potatoes, some type of pickle(which we loved! it goes so well with the dish) and an egg over the spiced rice. Watalappan dessert was really nice touch to complete full Srilankan experience.
We are definitely going back!! Really good people and Really GOOD food, I'm there!! Can't wait to go back!
Cute & delicious!. We tried this out for the first time last night. The family-run element is adorable and endearing to witness, and then add in that the food is fantastic, and we have a winner! I will be back over and over!
Great food & flavour, excellent service, awesome vegetarian and meat dishes as well...recommended!
Great Work!. At first I was undecided to go to this restaurant. Glad I did though, customer service was exceptional for this fast food restaurant, the meal was acceptable and filling. I definitely would recommend this to anyone that goes to Tinseltown and looking for a place to eat. They should have there own restaurant!
Great Deal!. I came here looking to order their usual special grilled chicken sandwich and fries - i've seen it available for $4.95!! But it wasn't on special today, so I opted for the grilled chicken breast special served with salad and saffron rice. I must say I got quite a deal (plus bonus fries!!) all for $6.99. They gave me 2 nicely seasoned and tender chicken breasts, very flavourful saffron rice and an crisp salad! The fries were fresh so they were a nice bonus. One may tend to skip this place and go the usual suspects like Taco Time or Koya, but next time your at International Village Cinemas, don't forget to stop at Canra and give them a try!
I now love Sri-Lankan Food!. Awesome meal. And cheap, too! I'm not usually a fan of food court meals, but this was incredible. Freshly made. Delicious. Light, but filling. Had the Lamb Kottu Rotti (medium heat) and it had a great level of spiciness without being overwhelmingly hot.
While we were eating, the owner came over to our table (remember... this is in a FOOD COURT) and asked if we were enjoying our meal!!! WOW! You don't get that kind of attention in most sit-down restaurants.
Do yourself a favour and eat here!
Delicious! I came here aftet seeing the popularity of it om Urban Spoon. Be sure to order the Veg Kottu Rotti, it is so tasty!
Hidden Gem. When you walk pass by a busy food court, and there is small store has fries, pizza, sandwich , chicken on their poster... you may not even take a second look of this place.
But do take a second look! Just wait a sec and what you see?! Traditional Sri Lanka food!
As a food lover, I hate fast food, I hate food court food even more, but the food Canra delivers is way beyond food court standard. Just take a look of the pictures I took, have you ever seen a food court store has such a nice food presentation for 5.99 in your life?
The food there is cheap, large portion, nicely presented, and Most importantly, really really tasty. Especially the Kottu Rotti, made of Sri lanka bread chops and lots lots onions, tender chicken meats and more. So much flavor and texture all in one dish. It also comes with a spicy sauce. Highly recommended.
If you like sort of Indian food, or any far east type, you should try Canra. Travel to Sri Lanka is pretty dangerous, so this is may be your only chance to have a taste of sri lanka.
Awesome Sri Lankan food!. It is a little strange to have the sandwich and fries on the menu but what I wanted to try was the Sri Lankan food. I was surprised to find this restaurant here. It's really goood! Having tasted authentic Sri Lankan food, I have to say they keep with the flavours true to the cuisine. So far I've tried their Kothu Roti and it's awesomee!! For the price it's a lot of food so I'm going back to try the other stuff.
Tinseltown delight. Canra Chicken and Fish is a little food court gem in the often empty Tinseltown mall second floor. The menu is a bit strange at first glance - sandwiches, french fries.... and Sri Lankan dishes (dosas, rottis, various dishes in a warmer). I can get sandwiches and french fries anywhere, so I'm focusing on their unique menu items and slowly working my way through all of the Sri Lankan delights.
So far my favourites are the fish rotti and the chicken dosa. Each of these are $5.99 - super awesome price point. You have to wait a couple of minutes for the food to be prepared, but it's worth the minor wait. Both dishes tasted like excellent home-made meals. You can also get a few different dishes from the warmer (stir fried pineapple!) with rice for less for about 5 bucks. It's a great bargain and I hope they will get the business they deserve.
