Review Connie's Cook House - Vancouver

Last night we tried Connie's Cookhouse we ordered - Chicken with salt and pepper, was the best I have tired in Van. Egg fried rice, very tasty Chicken Chow main (plain), tasted so good Schezwan beef, I wasn't a fan of but it wasn't terrible. The curry sauce was the closest I have got to home (Ireland) texture and taste it's not on their website so I called to order a side of it, tip get two side they sides are small but wow! Of course it's not home but it's the closest you will get. Also shrimp crackers (prawn crackers) not on their online menu but when I called they had them sooo good..

Food was generously portioned, piping hot, and super delicious. Prices are reasonable. Service was good. Some dishes came a little slower than others but there was lots to share, so it was ok. Be prepared to share! Definitely left satisfied. Would recommend!

Good amount of food, tasty and accessible prices. Everything was delicious but the siumai pork dumplings were ok. The dishes arrived fast. I will definitely go back!

Pretty decent Chinese food spot; staff was helpful & courteous. Food came out in good time & piping hot. The xiao long bao was really really good, albeit a bit small from what I’m used to. I didn’t particularly care for the gailan but it was also my first time trying it. Great portion sizing for the price though.

Old school Cantonese joint. $9.50 lunches. Great portions. Loved their Singaporean curry noodles (spicy). Hard to find these old family run establishments.

Good no msg food. We loved the meal and ordered directly from the restaurant. Not as salty or as strong of flavours, but we liked that: we could taste the fresh veggies and the spice.

It’s the best of the cheaper places to eat, I’m in the uk and I found it, when I lived there, and I arranged my day so I could eat there everyday, so much that the lady said, why don’t you try some other places….I did but not as good….I went back a few years later, got off plane…got sky train to close by and went right back in again…and spent the next two weeks going there as much as could… great.

Pleasantly surprised by this hole in the wall. Great service and very affordable considering its location. I don't think they use MSG so it's not as savory as your regular Chinese restaurant. Their hargao/hakaw/prawn dumplings are great.

We live in the neighbourhood and have been ordering delivery for family dinners for years now. Food & service has always been consistent and good. Dishes arrive hot and fresh too. We will continue to order from Connie's Cook House.

We tried this place for the first time after hearing good things from friends. We did take out and ordered the family combo for 4. Very good food with big portions. We still had leftovers for the next day. I’ll be going back.

Love the lunch special here! Friendly, no frills but delicious food for a great price. Highly recommend the house chicken curry.

Amazing vegetarian Kung Pao Tofu! Great portion and price! Very nice lunch special selection Mon-Sat. Wish I live close by so I can come everyday!

This food was amazing and reasonably priced. I highly recommend the green beans, the spicy fried shrimp and the dumplings. Coming back soon!

Over the years, many restaurants have closed in our area, in the process we lost our go-to chinese spots. Having a craving for this, we decided to try Connie's Cook House, a place that we had overlooked. After checking their hours on their website, we tried to make a reservation for dinner, but their system did not work properly, essentially had to phone them as soon as they opened to confirm we had a table. The lady that answered the phone was very diligent and kindly reserved a table for us. We were there early, and didn't need to worry, we had the whole place for ourselves. The same lady that had answered the phone brought the menus and took our order, all with a smile. We proceeded to order a few dishes: vegetarian hot & sour soup and also wonton soup, egg foo-yong with shrimp, diced chicken with cashew nuts, braised tofu with vegetables chow mein and young chow fried rice. All dishes served in generous portions, and over all they all met our expectations. We were looking for no-frills, chinese comfort food, and that's exactly what we got. This and their reasonable prices is the reason why this establishment has been located for so many years on W4th. Would definitely be back to try other dishes. As mentioned, the service was friendly and diligent. Bring your face mask, but otherwise plenty of space to be safe. They offer take out as well, if that's your preference.

Our favourite Chinese food restaurant in Kitsilano. Love their barbecue pork chow mein with veggies, beef with green beens in black bean sauce, honey garlic ribs, and the soup. Prices are good.

Super service, reasonable prices for West 4th restaurant! And really good Chinese food!!

My husband and I always order from this place. We recently have been dinning in and can I say the food is some how even better if you dine in! Take out is totally worth it and still delicious. They accomdate for my husbands Gluten Sensitivity and he has had zero issues from them. All the dishes are delish. Best Chinese in Kitsilano. ❤️

5 starts for food, 3 starts for service. Price is great. Take out will make me happier next time.

My favourite dish of this place is Shanghai Style Thick Noodles, Their price are very reasonable. I deduct one star for service as i need to wait bit long for my order.

Ordered their lunch special of sweet and sour chicken with rice and the combo also comes with a side of wonton soup. Their sweet and sour chicken had good flavour, but it wasn’t fried long enough so it ended up being soggy. As for their wonton soup, the broth tasted good, but the wonton itself was nothing special.

we had dinn. for 4 the food is to die for I have lived in kits for 50 years and used to order from the place on dunbar "S"no more!!Connies food is fresh and very tasty 0 fat on the pork dishes and tender THE BEST ON WEST SIDE reasonable prices

I would order food from here once in a while when I use to work in Kitsilano. They advertise no MSG in all their food. They have a lunch special menu that's a really good deal. The food comes with rice unless it's already a rice dish like fried rice or noodles. You also get to pick 1 out of 2 types of soup to go with your meal. Food is not bad and the price is good for what you get.

Ordered take out off of their lunch special menu. Great quality and portion at a great price! The waitress who helped me was very friendly.

Most times I call for delivery I get the run around on my
location which is 3.5 miles and far inside the 5 km radius. This evening I was
advised the driver could not go that far. This is the last straw for me...I won’t
be calling back.

Simple but amazing place ! Nice food, I think it is to much for one . Most of the dishes are meant to be eaten by groups . Surprisingly it was not crowded . But the array of food across the few tables that were occupied seemed delicious .. And so was my table . Every thing we ordered was amazing .

We order quite often usually food is pretty good, but when they sent the wrong dish in a big order I called to let them know they made a mistake and I would like the dish that I ordered. They made it very clear they weren't going to help me out. Even after I've spent hundreds of dollars there and referred many people. I will take my Business elsewhere and never recommend them again. Very bad customer service. Not on this order but past Orders I have found hair in the food aswell. Absolutely disgusting!

Service is extremely inpersonal and borderline rude - however if you can live with that the food is good and very reasonable prized, worth checking out for sure

We were looking for a place to dine for dinner, but it seemed like everywhere on 4th Ave was really busy. We stumbled upon Connie’s and Sheepie suggested we try, even though it was pretty empty, except 3 diners. The interior was colourful with yellow checkered table cloths along with metal, iron looking chairs. We ordered the House Special Chow Mein $10.95 and Kung-Po Chicken with Peanuts (hot) $11.25. The food arrived promptly.

Horrible food. Expensive! Meals do come in big portions but taste horrible.

Always tastes fresh!. Has never disappointed as far as food or service goes. Have been going for many years as we use to live right by, and even though we have moved out of the area, we still come back once in a while for the food. The owner, Connie, and her front of house staff still remember us after all of these years and they are always friendly and accommodating! We used their delivery service tonight for the first time, and our meal was delivered hot and delicious, as always, within 30mins. We ordered the wonton soup (broth is soooo... good - tastes like it is made fresh from scratch), sweet and sour pork w/ rice, and beef and broccoli chow mein. My husband's fave was the chow mein, and my 18month old son couldn't get enough of the wonton and broth. I enjoyed it all!!!

Great Food, terrible service.. The food is absolutely fantastic. There are lots of crunchy, fresh vegetables and the ginger beef is AMAZING. Unfortunate, their service misses the mark. On at least four different occasions, the ladies running the cash register have made condescending comments about how much food has been ordered. Firstly, although I may be picking up the food alone, surely I'm not eating 4-5 dishes by myself. Secondly, their job is to provide delicious food. I can do without a commentary on my friend's and family's eating habits. We will be returning to Connies but I will not longer be the one who picks up the order as I find their interactions with customers to be rude and insulting.

Awful... won't be going back.. We ordered a beef and mixed vegetable chow mein and a general tso's chicken. At $20, not the cheapest.

The chow mein was swimming in grease, the beef was slimy (the four pieces that were there) and the veg was pretty much non existent. The noodles were dripping with grease and were tasteless.

As a trained butcher, I'm pretty sure that the general tso's was made with "chicken"... it certainly wasn't chicken breast or thigh. It was chewy to the point of having to spit it out.

Awful food. Won't be going back.

AWFUL!!!!!. I am sorry to say this food is disgusting!!!! I ordered spring rolls, chicken chow mein, and the chicken pineapple sweet and sour. All three items were pretty bland. The spring rolls might have been okay had they come with the typical dipping sauce that usually comes with spring rolls, but they did not... which i thought was odd. the chicken chow mein was extremely dry and had almost no flavour. and the pineapple chicken sweet and sour tasted like it had been sitting under a heat lamp all day! I only managed to get a few bites in before throwing in the towel, so sadly this massive amount of food is going straight into the garbage :( what a waste of 25 bucks!!! save yourself and DON'T take a chance on this place!!!

AWESOME FOOD. Best Chinese food I've had - definitely try it!!
I'm not typically a huge Chinese food person, but Connie's is far above average. Super fresh and tons of flavour. Finally, my girlfriend and I can agree to have Chinese, if we go to Connie's. We also drive half an hour to get there and it's totally worth the drive.

Disappointing to say the least. Now that wins is gone I caved in and ordered takeaway from Connie's. I was so not impressed. Size of chicken dish minuscule and had no taste Szechwan green beans watery and limp, noodle dish oily and smelled weird. I will not order from here again. Was supposed to get free spring rolls but they were missing, probably for the best as they too would be oily. Now to go dig out the alka seltzer. I want wins back. Staff there were so nice and food was good

Fast service and friendly. Good size portions. Could tell the mushrooms were fresh and was not the can stuff. all the veggies was excellent and rhe pork dish and beef and shrimp dish were great.

Bad food and the staff were talking about us which was very upsetting and makes for bad customer service.

Do elsewhere. This food really was not good ....go elswhere

Great chinese take-out. We love this place.. we always order take-out but the food is always fast and consistently good. They have great lunch specials (lots of food for the price) and the staff is always friendly! Some of my favorites are the Mongolian beef, Chicken with mixed veg and the chicken with mixed veg chow mein.

Great food and service!. I had basically stopped eating Chinese food because I was having so much trouble finding a consistently good Chinese food restaurant that served fresh-tasting, flavourful food. Connie's Cookhouse not only had a pleasant atmosphere (really liked the relaxing music), and great service (the waitress was not rushed, and was very pleasant), but it also had very good, fresh-tasting food. The vegetarian spring rolls were not the traditional greasy, barely-full fare I'm used to (these had a nice batter and were pretty full of veggies, and came with a nice-tasting plum sauce), and the sauce on my tofu and veggies was nice, with just a hint of garlic. The vegetarian hot and sour soup was one of the best I've had. I can't emphasize enough how happy I was with the quality of Connie's Cookhouse. Service, atmosphere and meal were all great. And at $7.50 the lunch special was totally satisfying (I even had a bit left to take home) and quite reasonable. I hope they never change!

Connie's is good.. Try Connie's out, it's pretty good grub at reasonable prices.

Good portions, almost took all of it home.enjoyed the black bean egghplant dish. Would get take out from here next time, not really a great sit down meal.

DELIVERY SUCKS. Never again will I order from Connie's. Their food is good but the issues we have with getting delivery is enough for me to say goodbye. We are within the 5km that they say they will deliver yet every time we call we are told we live too far. It is a 7 minute drive and we order over $60 every time we call. So much for the free delivery under 5km. They won't even deliver within the 5km. VERY DISAPPOINTED. They have lost our business.

Just not that good. I don't dislike it but it's not good. It's pretty average and the price is okay. Nothing special.

Worst Chinese Food EVER. This was the most disgusting, bland, greasy Chinese food I've had in decades. I don't usually do Chinese unless recommended, and this was! Go figure. Forty-five dollars out the window.

Popped in for a take out and was pleasantly surprised when I brought my meal home. Huge portions that were tasty and fresh! I would definitely give this place 2 thumbs up based on food quality.

Fresh ingredients, not outstanding. People seem to love Connie's, based on the reviews. While I don't DIS-like it, I didn't find it to be all that special. The kung "po" (sic) chicken and prawns with black bean sauce had good meat, not mushy or skimpy portions. My wife was impressed with the freshness of the shrimp.

The vegetables, especially the green peppers and zucchini, were cut in large-ish chunks, though. I have always thought this was the sign of a lazy cook, because it's less trouble to chop things big than it is to dice finer. Again, no quibble with the quality of the ingredients; just to me, it shows a lack of finesse.

It's hard to make bog-standard dishes like these outstanding, because they're so "everywhere." For me, Connie's is just another part of the Chinese horde. I suppose if I want something that's a notch above average, I'll have to go to Bao Bei.

Nice Service and food. Being a exchange student of UBC, i am already tired of the horrible food in UBC. As a student from HK, I am really picky about food. But connie's cookhouse is a great place to go. I ordered hot squid with rice and hot and sour soup. Food is in general good, especially considering it's only $6.75 for such a big dish. Not salty, and 90% sure it has no MSG.Nice environmonet and service, so i give more than 10% tips.

Nicely done. All of the little-things in this restaurant -- the service, the decor, the atmosphere, the menu, the presentation -- are a clear step better than your average Chinese take away/restaurant. The food is good too, although not exceptional. So, overall, this is a good choice, especially if you're looking to eat in.

Best chinese takeout in Kitsilano. Connie's uses good ingredients, has an interesting menu, and everyone there is friendly. If you order to take away, and then come pick it up, they'll usually give you a carton of tasty soup for free. Hooray!

Connie's is Great. Good Chinese food, portions and good prices. Connie is a gracious host.

Excellent all around. I've never been disappointed with the quality of food or service from Connie's. Even David Suzuki eats here on a regular occasion!! Lunch is great value as well.
Food Queen
The food came out really hot and it tasted fresh, so I didn’t get the vibe that it was just sitting pre-made in the back. The portion here is pretty big, but not so excessively large that you can’t finish it. There was a decent amount of chicken in the dish and the pieces were large and juicy. The green beans were good, although I prefer them a bit more blackened on the outside

...Connie's Cook House deserves, the rating yummy and sits well in my stomach.
West Coast Tastebuds
That would pretty much be how I would describe the restaurant, in a nutshell: Not good but not bad. The service was obviously not that great, because there does only seem to be one waitress – and even then she is multitasking and working in the kitchen sometimes as well as trying to cater to the dine-in and take-out customers.

Connie's Cookhouse is now one of my favourite Chinese restaurants in Vancouver and that says a lot. It's a small place on West 4th with a mellow atmosphere and very friendly staff; that also says a great a deal since most staff at Chinese restaurants aren't very happy people. One thing that really impressed me about this place was the service. Our orders arrived in the time it took you to read this sentence. Literal

Vancouver is 17% Chinese. Its nearby suburb of Richmond is something like 40% Chinese (59% immigrant, and the source says that the majority are from Hong Kong, Taiwan and China). So you can get Chinese food in pretty much the same variet
