Bai Bau Thai Cuisine is located on the East Hastings corridor near Nanaimo Street – near my former haunts. There’s nothing like finding a nice new Thai restaurant (well, new to me at least). We checked this place out in mid-August and started with a Lychee Mint Slushie ($5.90) and Chicken Satay Skewers ($7.90). The mint slushie was a welcome addition given the warm weather we’ve been having this summer and the creamy peanut sauce with the satay skewers was spot on.
Two years ago, I wrote a delicious post on Bai Bua Thai Cuisine! It’s been two years since coming to Bai Bua, but the restaurant and good service still remained the same. Mango sticky rice: OH MY – I seriously could not stop thinking about this sticky rice the next day.
This is a far better restaurant than the review average suggests. I have been coming for several years now. Maybe about 10 times. The fairly bright lghting and quiet background music provide an excellent ambience. The service has always been attentive, including the welcome and goodbye. This is far more than a simple Thai curry restaurant. I have had a variety of dishes and I cannot remember any one dish that I did not enjoy. My favourite is # 88, an egg noodle chicken dish. An acquaintenance recommended it to me. I ask for medium spicing, or medium hot spicing. This is a reasonable price and leaves me well satisfied.
Authentic thai food in East Van. Leave some room after the pad thai for the mango dessert that’s almost too pretty to eat. Presentation shows how much they care about their food.
Bai Bua is a fairly priced Thai restaurant located on Hastings East Van area, directly across the street of southbound 95 B-Line. I went there twice, and this review is gathered on the basis of both experiences.
First time, I went for their lunch special menu that I heard from my girlfriend. The lunch menu is reasonably priced with many choices. Most choices are downsize version of the regular menu (dinner). However, I believe the downsize somehow made the presentation of certain dishes better compare to dinner. Perhaps it was 2 PM, less busy time, the service and food qualities are above my expectations for a family run restaurant.
Services: 4/5
Food: 4.5/5
Drink: 5/5 I really like the ice tea
Overall: 4.5/5
Second time, I went with four friends, and we ordered 4 dishes to share. This time it was 6PM Thursday night, so much busier time period compare to first visit. The dish presentation was a lot careless, and service was speedy but lack of attention to details. Ice tea orders were missed, and we mentioned once when main dishes were served. Unfortunately, after we finished main dishes, and decided to pay our bills, they still didn’t notice anything wrong with ice tea orders and included that in the bill.
Services: 3/5
Food: 4/5
Drink: 3/5 even though we didn’t get it, it is good taste
Overall: 3.5/5
Hopefully, I get more time next couple weeks to try it once more, like always, 3 is a charm. I will update the review accordingly after third visit in short future
Finally got the third time to try it. This time, it is dinner with my lady, two dishes plus Ice Tea with milk and coconut rice. The coconut rice is amazing, smells fresh and tasty, medium firm, and goes well with sweet and sour dishes.
Services: 4/5 better
Food: 4/5
Drink: 4/5 got my drink this time
Overall: 4/5
I guess third time is indeed a charm. The overall experience is much better than first time and second time. However, I still highly recommend to go at lunch time, portions are more manageable and services are better.
A few weeks ago the Royal Family Circus was in town and my friends and I got cheap tickets on Groupon! It was only $15 each so that was a great deal for a night of entertainment. They were set up on the PNE fair grounds so we went to Bai Bua Thai on E. Hastings and Nanaimo for dinner first. It’s right across from the 95 B-line stop.

Bai Bua Thai is a solid Thai restaurant with something for everyone. This family run establishment that mainly specializes in Bangkok Street – freshly prepared, simple, and quick!
We were going up along Hastings street and being that I passed by Bai Bua Thai on my commute to school practically every day, I figured that it was about time that we go by. Since we were here at lunch, our meal came with complimentary soup and prawn chips. I thought the chips were crispy but they didn’t taste like shrimp and tasted more like the oil they were fried in. As for the soup…it was merely MSG soup.
This post has been a long time coming but better late than never right? Bai Bui Thai is my favorite place to go for Thai food in Vancouver because not only is it super affordable but it’s absolutely delicious and to top it all off, they are absolutely MSG free!. I usually get the Sukho Thai noodle soup because it’s tangy, spicy and all sorts of yum but I decided to try something new this time around and go the Tom yum noodle soup instead.
Man! You gotta try this authentic Thai restaurant. This is the best one among all other Thai restaurants in Lower Mainland that I have tried so far.
Ambiance
The owner painted the walls white and drew some special flower designs with some gold colour on the flowers. The interior design made the ambiance and environment more comfortable and it was bright inside the restaurant.
Pricing
The prices on all the dishes are quite reasonable or not too expensive comparing to the ones in Vancouver west like the ones on Cambie Street, Granville Street and Vancouver downtown.
Food
Excellent! Very authentic! Very delicious! You have to try the food in person. If I tell you how well the food and drink are, this is not good enough. You have to experience and taste everything yourself.
Service
Average. The servers were oaky. Not very friendly. But they were polite.
I would like to come back and try other dishes.
Cheers!
Bai Bua Thai is a friendly neighbourhood restaurant. I'm so glad I stumbled upon them! Their excellent service and food actually made me want to start an account to write a review!
What I would recommend is to come here during their lunch hours as they have a lunch special@ that comes with a soup, appetizer, and, main dish as a combo! While you're here, the Coconut Lovers dessert is a must! The Coconut Lovers dessert contains coconut ice cream wrapped in fresh coconut meat with fresh coconut water on the side!
Quite surprised to see such a low rating for this place. I really liked it here.
Their Thai Ice Tea with Milk was heavenly! Sweet and refreshing... would be hard to have just one. Was really wanting to try their Thai Iced Coffee, but didn't think that would've been a good idea at dinnertime... so this was a great alternative.
The Yellow Curry was flavorful with large pieces of chicken (pork or beef are other choices). Wish it was spicier, but I'm sure that could be accommodated next time.
The way I judge a Thai restaurant is based on how good (or bad) their Pad Thai is. I really enjoyed their pad thai here. I would order it again. We also tried their chicken wings. They are no Phnom Penh wings, but they were pretty good!
Last but not least: Mango & Sticky Rice dessert! Mango cut beautifully into a rose on top of sweet sticky rice. Whoever loves sweets, this dessert is for you! Nothing but sweetness, deliciousness and yumminess.
If your looking for comfort food and don't care so much about price then this place is good. Inside it's a cafe style setup. The service is friendly and the wait staff does check ups. My brother and his girlfriend ordered a little of everything. The papaya salad, the crispy fish and shrimp ball, curry noodle, chicken satay, pad gra pao, eggplant green curry, padthai, fish cake, and banana roll.
But the ultimate eye gazer was the Thai milk tea and the mango sticky rice. Holy s#+@!, that thai milk tea is really good. Soooo comforting. If someone made a icecream version of it I would literally buy buckets of it. Then the crowd pleaser..... The mango dessert. You gotta be kidding me. It's so beautiful and I respect the fact on their pricing for this one. Mangoes imported here are expensive. Labor to cut and present, then a mark up usually 30 percent. It's about right. It's so good you gotta eat two lol. No one so far has done this here locally. Two thumbs up for creativity and the element to wow your customers.

Ex-coworker of mine sent me pictures of her dessert that she got here and I thought it looked pretty good as the mango was shaped like a rose and coconut ice cream was sitting in the coconut shell. However, when my boyfriend and I came to the restaurant, he noticed the dessert costed nearly $10. That is a little too pricey in my opinion. Just because it looks really nice and looks like they put lots of effort into it, it was just simply too pricey. I probably would of gotten it if it was around $6-7. Despite the overpriced desserts, we still wanted to try their food.
Vegetarian spring rolls - It was mediocre. It was very bland. You need the plum sauce to enjoy these spring rolls. There wasn't much vermicelli noodles in these rolls, just lots of vegetables. I have bought Thai spring rolls from costco, they taste better IMO.
Prawn Pad Thai - I couldn't decide if I wanted the lunch combo (with "appitizer" and soup) or just the dinner one. I asked the lady what's the appetizer and soup of the day. She told me they weren't any soup today, so it was just salad and the appetizer was some chicken graham cracker? No idea. The difference between the pad thai was that the lunch one was "little less" and with "3" prawns instead of "5" in the dinner option. We decided to go with the dinner option as the appetizer and salad didn't sound that great to us. The overall pad thai was very tasty and not too saucy. The server asked us if we wanted some spicy powder/flakes, we said sure. It added a nice kick to the pad thai.
Beef Pad Kee Mao - This tasted like Chinese Beef Chow Fun. This dish was noticeable smaller than the pad thai. There weren't much noodles in this entree, but with tons of vegetables (majority bell peppers). This dish was alright, but got my veggies for lunch I guess.
Service - Okay. The lady was standing near us as she was waiting for us to order. After getting our food, no one came to check on us. Boyfriend went up to till to grab our bill to pay.
We came for their mango rose dessert. I think most people do, after they see a photo of it. Delicate mango slices arranged to form a rose, petal by petal; but more about that later. Though their dinner menu was well worth the visit alone. They served Thai street food in a contemporary setting. The decor looked more like a cafe, a place more for tea time than dinner. Especially with the wooden shelf of brass cups and unknown ingredients in bottles by the counter.
I would say this is a decent restaurant. The ambience is Cafe style, but the food was delicious. We ordered Pad Thai, Curry Beef, and Chicken Salad. All tasty.
Bai Bua Thai Cuisine is family owned restaurant on Hastings Sunrise neighborhood. It is close to Tacofino Commissary and Mr. Red Cafe. Bai Bua itself means Lotus Leaf – often used as food wraps and as herbal medicine. Bai Bua itself is brightly lit, open and welcoming. Bai Bua Thai offers authentic Thai food that is flavorful and competes with Kin Kao.

Chicken Wings 7.99: 8 pieces of deep fried crispy wings marinated in garlic and spices. Juicy and plump and came piping hot. The batter is light, not greasy and reminds me a Church's. And that is a good thing!
Chicken Satay 7.90: Grilled marinated chicken in coconut milk, turmeric, garlic, Thai spices and served with peanut sauce, salsa of fresh cucumber and red onion. I thought it was a little dry and flavors were bland.
Tom Kha Gai (Chicken coconut milk soup) 10.90: Ever since we went to Departure, we have been craving Tom Kha Gai. So naturally we had to order this when we saw it on the menu. Tom Kha Gai is a spicy coconut milk soup. This one is a little thin but still has a lot of great flavors. Lots of chicken, mushrooms, coriander, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaf, chili, galangal ginger and lime juice.
Som Tum (Papaya Salad) 8.90: One of my favorite dishes of the night. Their Papaya salad with medium heat is refreshing and delicious. Shreaded green papaya, carrot, lime, tamarind juices, green bean, tomato, fresh chili, garlic, peanut and fish sauce. Just the right amount of tart, spices and acidity.
Pad Thai with Prawns 10.99: Stir fried thin rice noodles, tamarind sauce, sugar, salted radish, egg, chives, bean sprouts and ground peanuts. The noodles were a little sweet. I added some chili oil to it and it was ok.
Next time I will definitely order the mango sticky rice. It is made into a shape of a rose. It is so pretty in photos. But I'm looking forward to their curries and other signature Thai dishes.
Would not recommend getting their lunch combo. All it's doing is cutting down the portion of your actually meal for four pieces of chips and a bland soup. The pad thai here isn't much compared to other Thai places. There wasn't a kick to it, maybe because it wasn't spicy at all. I enjoyed those dessert though.
Saw this place just opened so gave it a try. Food was absolutely delicious, service was super fast, and I like that they toned down the spiciness, but not the flavour. Will definitely put it on my list of go-to places.
