Jj Bean Coffee Roasters

I've been to this JJ Bean location a couple of times and have had a chance to sample their muffin, cookie, and croissants. Overall, I'm quite impressed by their baked offerings.

Very Berry Muffin (around $3): 4/5; The muffin was large, probably 1.5-2x the size of regular muffins. It was overfilled with juicy berries. I did find it to be a bit doughy in some parts and I would have preferred for it to be a bit sweeter, but that’s probably just because I love sugar and have a high tolerance for sweets.

Double Chocolate Browne Cookie (around $3): 4/5; Although not as big as the muffin, it was still quite substantial in size. I really liked the texture: crispy on the edges with a softer interior. There were a nice amount of chocolate chunks. I just would have liked there to be a bit more chocolate flavour however.

Butter Croissant (I want to say $3.50): 4/5

Ham & Cheese Turnover (I want to say $4.50ish): 4.5/5 Both the croissant the the turnover were flaky, fresh and buttery, and just as good as those from higher end patisseries.

The quality and taste of their food alone is enough for me to return. Add that to the fact that their cookies and muffins have great value for their size, and you've got a real winner. I'm just so glad that they are apparently setting up a new location at UBC (where I'm currently studying).

You'd think that the lack of the WiFi in this place would dispel the crowds, but nope, unlike other coffee shops, people actually come here for the coffee. This JJ is definitely among the busier of the coffee houses in town, simply because everything is perfect. The muffins are delicious and cookies are a favourite. Not to mention the ambiance is very warm and inviting.

Great spot for a quick lunch or snack! Their chicken wraps grilled with sour cream are unreal, Unfortunately they only serve it with salsa now which is still good but just not the same.. Better just on its own I think. And the cinnamon buns with cream cheese icing are one of my favourites. Actually it's my go to for a good cinnamon bun but they sell out by noon usually so if you want one come early :)

What makes Vancouver-born coffee shops different from the traditional Starbucks? JJ Bean has been a mainstay on The Drive for years. Do the beans here roast better or should one stick to home grinds? Read on to find out. Food: This was a solo trip and I ordered the following: Dark Roast Railtown Vegan Double Chocolate Cookie For the dark roast, this was a smokey blend with a slight roast to it. I liked that it didn’t taste very acidic and I could get a full bean taste with each sip. I thought the top could have been less foamy and there was some coffee bean debris at the bottom but that’s quite normal for a quick coffee. Compared to Starbucks I’d say the coffees are at about the same quality but leagues ahead of Tim Horton’s. Prado Cafe might give this place a run for its money though. JJ Bean takeout cups do have the luxury of having a Vancouver-inspired design if you are into showing off where your coffee comes from. Dark Roast - Railtown The Vegan Double Chocolate Cookie went a lot better than I thought. I was having mad choco-cravings and opted for this even though it was vegan. It was quite chewy and had a chocolatey taste in both the dough and chips . I didn’t see any non-vegan options for this so if you love chocolate this cookie is a good choice. Vegan Double Chocolate Cookie Features: Being on the corner spot is great for this cafe. There is a circular table in the middle that’s great for meeting with people and being a little communal at the same time. I’d say this cafe could comfortably seat about 20 guests inside and maybe 20 more outside on the patio. There’s a dark wooden feel to everything which might make one’s dark roast taste more delicious because of the atmosphere. Inside JJ Bean - Commercial Drive Service: Service was pretty good here. At the counter there was no fuss about payment and the coffee was poured as I was putting in my credit card PIN to maximize speed of delivery. The entire experience was enjoyable so I can see why this is a popular neighbourhood coffee shop for many. That said, I still think it’s a bit overpriced.

Always a fan. Among all the JJ Bean locations i've been to, this on the Drive remains my favourite. This is one rare coffee shop where i love sitting outside as much as inside, and pretty much any table. (I am in general very anal about choosing seat & table) I simply enjoy the vibrant, communal atmosphere there, as created by the clientèle in conjunction with the staff, the background music, and the traffic outside. I am a fan of their coffee (both regular brews and americano), and a huge fan of their muffins (especially the carrot raisin bran ones, with their colossal tops, are the one i would choose if i could only eat one kind from any café for the rest of my life. Also adore the blueberry-bran one, the cheese-jalapeño one, and the vegan berries one). They are open till late by comparison to most cafés on the Drive.
