First time visit using a dinner groupon. Service was fairly good. The place was pretty empty given it was a Friday night off one of the main arteries of the city. The spring rolls were piping hot and the tofu goreng was more than we expected and really good. The Kung Pow Chicken was a bit saucy for my liking. The chicken pieces were really soft... but made me concerned about how cooked it was. I think it was just done enough. I was paranoid about some of the bigger pieces not being fully cooked though. Could've added more cashews to the dish too. The mee goreng was good but would've appreciated more of the small shrimp, or the same amount but as prawns. (I think there were only about 5 shrimps). I would consider coming here again.

This place was recommended by my friend Peter (Broadway Camera) he suggested the medium spicy curry base Otak Sole Fish Fillet he definitely wasn't wrong it's out of this world delicious i also added a bowl of steamed rice($2.00) so i could soak up all the curry goodness, the meal is $14.00 for the lunch size and $24.00 for the dinner size, the service was very efficient and friendly i would highly recommend this location.

This was our third and final DOV meal this year. That is the most advantage that I have taken of the festival and it can be great but there is a disadvantage also. The menus that the restaurants present need to be acceptable to the masses (and I don't mean it in a derogatory sense) meaning that they may have to stick to the closer to neutral tastes that suit everyone (not too spicy or fishy or unusual) rather than serve what might be their strong dishes. I kind of feel like that was the case with Kaya Malay Bistro in that, while all of the dishes were tasty and fine, nothing made me fall to my knees and weep or swear that I would be back for a huge dish of  that item (other than maybe the Deep Fried Banana, but we'll get to that)! We arrived at 12:30 on Sunday and were immediately seated. The restaurant offers comfortable seating and decor that is easy on the eyes. It was a little chilly when we arrived such that my partner kept her coat on but it gradually warmed as time went by. I had already perused the DOV menu so we ordered and our appetizers arrived in fairly short order. Each nicely arranged plate featured a tasty and tender skewer and a green salad with a very nice vinaigrette of some kind of fruity vinegar (raspberry?). Marie enjoyed the Roti Canai which was quite decent but our favourite was the Tofu Goreng with a very nice spicy sweet sauce and plenty of peanuts. Our main courses each offered a taste of Jasmine Rice. Marie had Sambal Green Beans, a chicken curry and her favourite which was a Caramelised Ginger Sole. The fish was the only thing that really made us sit up and take notice and that was again owing to the spicy sweet sauce. My plate featured Beef Rendang, a mix of stir fry vegetables and a Seafood Bouillabaisse. Again all of these were fine but nothing really stood out. Deep fried Banana is never a bad thing and this one was particularly good! The key is likely that it arrived in fairly short order from the fryer and vanilla ice cream was its perfect foil. I enjoyed the silky Panna Cotta also but Marie declared that it did not taste much like Pandan (she has had a little more experience than me with Pandan) . All in all we enjoyed our lunch but were not blown away. This restaurant has raked in a few accolades and service was friendly and efficient. So as I keep mentioning, I think maybe the regular menu might impress us more. I hope to come back and try some of their specialities!

We ordered the appetizer platter for one, Nyonya Chicken curry, and curry lamb. Their appetizers were so good. Everything were tasty. The two curry were not bad, I do like the lamb better. The chicken seems to be not strong enough.

I've debated on going to this place many times and finally, the opportunity came by. Kaya Malay Bistro was participating in the 2017 Dine Out Vancouver Festival.

We ordered the Malaysian laksa and Ipoh char Hor fun. The Laksa came with lots of ingredients, especially fish cake. It was quite flavorful, though not as authentic. The fried wife rice noodles was also quite good and rich.

2016-11: It’s been almost 2 years since I last visited here. The roti was still good. Laksa tasted a bit more bland in flavour. I was surprised throughout the night, we were one of three tables. I thought they’d be busier even on a Wednesday night. Two years ago, we were asked to leave after chatting for too long post-eating because others were waiting on tables on a weeknight.
------
2014: Their roti is to die for. I absolutely loved it!! Singapore Laksa was flavorful and filling. I really like this place.

Not bad...not bad at all. My girlfriend and I came in on a Friday night wearing sweats LOL. We were tired from a long week. We wanted to seek some comfort food last minute and saw this place. Parking is easy. There's also live entertainment inside which is pretty cool. Everyone was dressed really formal but that didn't bother us at all.

The decor and ambiance is very nice. Service is excellent, 5/5. Very friendly and curtious. Loved our funny waitress, great sense of humor. It definitely elevated our experience.

We ordered the soft shell crab. Absolutely delicious. There were sautéed onions and black peppercorns with iceberg. Fantastic. Then we ordered a pair of every skewer. They were moist and flavorful, not dry. The mussels are lovely. I would literally drink the whole bowl of broth, if it wasn't for our smiley waitress paying so much attention to our table lol.
Then finally the spicey papya salad. Loved the spice. Although it could use less dressing. It felt like our salad was drenched. But other then that, the flavors are comforting.

Great experience. I'd love to come back again and try happy hour. They have 4 dollar items. Drinks are cheap too.

One of my top ten restaurants in Vancouver, this place never disappoints! I have been here on many occasions and the food has always been delicious. My must have is the appetizer roti with curry sauce; other classics are the pineapple fried rice, pad thai and hot and sour soup. Service is quick especially during lunchtime when it can get busy due to it's proximity to Vancouver General. I would recommend it for any occasion, whether for a business meeting or a casual dinner with family or friends!

This is more fusion than true Malaysian food. The food wasn't terrible for sure.

Good:
the Mee Goreng and the Char Kway Teow. - both are so good you could swear that they're just about the same as in their home country.
Roti Canai was good though the curry that came with it was really small and lacked depth.

Bad:
Chicken Rice - the chicken portion was generous enough but the rice was broken up and the chilli sauce came from a bottle. The sort of chilli sauce that goes with fried spring rolls in a Chinese Restaurant. Did not come with the correct dark soysauce.

Beef Rendang - who puts a salad on it? the Rendang was not cooked long enough for the flavours to truly mellow. It lacked the complex depth of proper Rendang.

Ugly:
Service was uneven; waitress handled cutlery by the tines and spoon part and not the handle.
They didn't have Teh Tarik (a Malaysian staple)

Kaya in the Fairview area of Vancouver is serving up Malaysian cuisine. Malaysian food is similar in some ways to Thai food but with a little less spice. We started with an assortment of their satays, meat on a skewer. The skewers were served with a side of spicy peanut sauce. Pictured here are the chicken, beef and lamb.

Kaya Malay Bistro has a 3-course $28 menu that looks like a Dine Out Vancouver offering, but it's not. Not exactly. tons of options for the main, and they are thinking of putting some of this prix fixe menu's items on their a la carte. Thanks to Ronald Lee of Eat Marketing, I got to try a house selection of this three-course for free, along with Vanfoodies and Nancyland.

Upon first glance, Kaya's interior is very simple both in design and colors as it seems the focus is on the food. The restaurant has the capacity to cater to small intimate rendezvous to large gatherings of friends and family. Fusion malaysian dishes made of a medley of amazing ingredients and spices you can taste with each bite. With a group of friends we got to sample the Vancouver Dine Out menu consisting of five dishes. Started off the evening with their light and refreshing drink that reminded me of a fruity Singapore Sling drink. Kaya's version is made with soda water, pomegranate juice, guava juice and lychee normally mixed with gin and triple sec.

Here are just a few dishes to mention.

Appetizer roti canai served with curry dipping sauce influenced by Indian. This fried sweet bread is a must have to any meal.

Of course no Malaysian restaurant would be without a curry dish so we got to taste their Seafood Bouillabaisse. Tangy yellow curry served with seafood that's perfectly cooked to avoid the tough texture to the bite. With the left over sauce you can easily drink it by the spoon or serve over a bowl of rice.

Then the Singapore style chile Lobster Tail that has wrapped itself in a ball due to cooking but once you unroll it you get to experience the succulent lobster meat. After having one I was craving for a few more as the tails were small.

To end the evening on a sweet note we were served deep fried mango ice cream drizzled with mango sauce. Fruity ice cream in a bread casing and deep fried to get a crispy texture.

The dishes were flavourful that got me to crave for more. it seems the focus of the restaurant is on the quality of the food rather than quantity.

The food was flavourful, great presentation, vibrancy in colour and texture. The coconut curry had just enough kick to it. I was impressed by the spice blend they use for their rack of lamb. The blend they used reminded me of authentic malaysian street food and the strong flavours and combination of sweet, garlicky, umami, and aroma that complimented the lamb so well. We also had a poached lobster basted in sweet and sour sauce. The lobster was a tad salty but I really appreciated how each flavour of the dishes speak out the flavours of the region.

Service was impressive as the owner and chef always has a big smile. Incredibly generous and hospitable in personality as well. He even shared with us his story behind why he opened the restaurant and I can tell he puts his heart into his business in a really genuine and humble way you won't find in a lot of other business owners.

Great food, great experience. As a food consultant, I highly recommend.

Kaya Malay Bistro specializes in Malaysian cuisine with influences from Portugal, India, Indonesia and China.  Their offerings can be best described as comfort food with spice levels as you like it.  I had been to other restaurants serving similar food in the same neighbourhood, including Banana Leaf and Red Ginger, and I was interested to see what Kaya had to offer.

The bistro was quaint and a little dark. There were only another party besides us when we arrived at 8:30 on a Wednesday night (they close at 10). After we perused the menu for awhile, we decided on the softshell crab, roti canai, satay skewers, calamari and Singapore laksa. Shortly after our waitress put order in, I remembered that Mamallama doesn’t eat rice vermicelli, so instead of having 4 appetizers and 1 entree, I decided to swap out the calamari for pad Thai. Our waitress informed us that the kitchen was already making it, but she kindly told me that it wouldn’t be a problem.

The crispy softshell crab ($11) was sauteed with fresh onions, garlic and shallot, chili and Indian black peppercorn. It was absolutely delicious. It had such a fragrant salty peppery taste, yet the crab flavour was not lost, it was actually quite bold even. It was only mildly spicy so Mamallama was able to enjoy it without a problem.

The roti canai ($7) was alright. It had a crispy exterior and it wasn’t greasy, but it could’ve been a little more flaky. The curry sauce it was served with didn’t compliment the roti canai very well, it was watered down and a little too sweet for our preference. Baby-Paca and I thought the roti canai tasted better with the peanut dip that came with the satay skewers.

The satay skewers were $1.75 per skewer with a minimum order of 6. We decided to get 2 each of the beef, chicken and lamb. They were all tender and had a wonderful charred flavour. If I had to rank them, lamb would come first, then chicken, and beef. I highly recommend the lamb. It was perfectly seasoned and the flavours went impeccably with that of the peanut sauce. And while the menu advertised that the peanut dip was spicy, the heat was missing, but we didn’t mind at all.

The Singapore laksa ($12) came topped with shrimp, fish cake, chicken, half an egg and bean sprouts. The coconut broth could’ve been creamier and it tasted overwhelmingly of dried shrimp, which made the entire bowl of rice vermicelli a little too fishy for me and Baby-Paca’s taste. It wasn’t awful, but I don’t like the flavour of dried shrimp, so it was literally all I could taste. I finished my small bowl, but I wouldn’t order it again.

The pad Thai ($12) was great. The rice noodles were stir fried with an ample amount of shrimp, firm tofu, bell peppers, bean sprouts and egg. A lime wedge and crushed peanuts were served on the side of the plate. It was neither too wet, nor too dry, it was stir fried

AYCE

(Updated in August, 2017 )

The same AYCE, almost same menu

Tasted good overall, service has yet to be improved.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On a Saturday afternoon, they offered an AYCE menu.  Quite excited to give it a try.

There were quite a number of dishes to choose from.  We started with a bowl of Hot & Sour Soup, and then Vegetable Spring Rolls as appetizer.  Wow, they were good!  For main dishes, we chose Pad Thai Noodles, Sambal Green beans with beef, Stir-fried Veges, Salt & Pepper Pork Chop, Curried Beef, etc.

For dessert, we got the Mango and Coconut Ice-cream - yummy!

We didn't have a chance to try everything from the AYCE menu because there were only 2 of us.

There were no Hainanese Chicken, nor any kind of Laksa, samosa on this menu - a bit disappointed.

For a price of $17.95 per person, this was quite a good deal already though.

Overall comment  :  restaurant environment : ok;  service : above average;  food : good

Recommended!!!

In there early on a quiet Wednesday - a little frustrated that they sat all 3 tables side by side when a little space would have been nice. The food though was excellent. Shared appetizer sampler is great portion. Crispy calamari seasoned well and nice and soft roti canai. Portions are good to share. Best value looked to be the set dinner menu 3 courses total. Will be back.

I was a little scared walking into Kaya at first. I don’t know if it was the word Bistro associated to a Malaysian restaurant, or the huge modern space with bright colours painted on the walls inside, but something about it gave me the heebie jeebies. Unfortunately while Little Bunny and I were walking to our bank appointment along Broadway, I made the mistake of giving her the power of deciding where to go for lunch afterwards. She seems to be on a Malaysian food binge as of late so sure enough as soon as we saw Kaya, her decision was made. I wasn’t too keen, wanting to check out the newish Big Smoke Burger near Cambie, but ultimately she  had final say and so Kaya it was. *sigh* I’m so whipped…

When an enormous line at our intended restaurant put us off our plan, we decided to visit Kaya instead. Its Malaysian food was pretty highly recommended, but even more importantly, they could accommodate our party of 6 at short notice.

Our Indonesian friend, who had visited Kaya before, recommended the char kuey teow, char bee hoon and rendang beef. I was quite torn between the first, two but ultimately went for the CKT. Another friend ordered the Rendang Beef with Hainanese steamed rice, and 2 satay skewers each of chicken, beef and lamb, and we decided to share everything together.

We had also heard a lot about their roti canai, but alas on that fateful day, we were out of luck - they had run all out of it, even though it was only 6.30 pm!

So, onto the food - rendang beef is the winner! Not only is it really well made, they also give you a LOT of it. A single dish with two of the rice dishes would be sufficient for two people. My friend ended up packing it for home. The CKT on the other hand, was average; I didn't like that it was very oily, but it looks apt as Malaysian street food. Among the satay skewers, the lamb was the best, with the chicken being just passable. I've had better satays though, so I wouldn't recommend it.

At the end, the 6 of us shared a pisang goreng - two deep fried bananas with vanilla ice cream. I'd never had anything like this before and was justifiably suspicious, but was pleased to note that a crispy deep fried layer really complements the soft banana inside!

Other than the rendang and the pisang goreng (and possibly the roti that everyone raves about, but we never got to taste), Kaya's other fine point is the service - nicer, friendlier, and more attentive service would not be easy to find!

Great food!So much flavour and very enjoyable. The Nasi goreng was a stand out and fresh seafood was tasty. Tender Beef Rendang,

Flaky Roti and good food

At Kaya Malay.

Despite the misses on the soft shell crab, rice and Malaysian crepe, the other dishes were good enough to make my meal very enjoyable. The roti, Beef Rendang and Sambal Chili Trio were fantastic and much better than other versions I have tried in the city. Kaya Malay Bistro has become my go to destination for Malaysian cuisine in Vancouver.

I wouldn't say that the cuisine is authentic, buy they're definitely innovative. They have more of a modern twist on Malaysian food. I come here often with my family, who have an array of different diets; they are very willing to customize if necessary.

I have heard recommendations to this place, so I had high expectations. The very open and airy atmosphere of the restaurant was very nice. The restaurant is kept very clean, and has a modern slick design. The tables are far apart for privacy and space. Nice tables and comfy seats. The air is filled with delicious flavours. I was greeted by three different staff so it seemed that efficiency was important. As I was seated by one staff (who later was our server), he asked if I’d like something to drink. I asked for tea. After he left, another staff had already brought two glasses of water (the other for Sheepie who was out parking). The Green tea was infused with tropical flavour and the aroma was quite pleasant, I kept sniffing the air. So fruity! As I write this post, I noticed that on the receipt, the tea was not included in the bill. I doubt it is usually free and probably a mistake? After Sheepie sat down and we had plenty of time to decide, we waited more for the server to come get our order. It seemed like forever, and wondered what the fast service before was. We signaled and looked like we were getting antsy, and finally our server arrived. Fried Hokkien Mee $12 We ordered the Rendang Beef $16, Hainanese Rice $2.50 and Fried Hokkien Mee $12. The beef in the Rendang was not as soft as I thought it would be. I recall Banana Leaf’s to be softer, but that is from years ago…but the beef, potatoes and the stew went very well with the rice. Even though I ordered the Rendang, and Sheepie the Hokkien Mee, I actually liked the noodles better. Not because I’m a noodle fanatic, but I really liked the flavour. The shrimps were very plumpy and juicy. Good portions. Rendang Beef $16 Hainanese Rice $2.50 I enjoyed the food, restaurant and staff. Compared to Banana Leaf though, I’m still drawn to going there instead…however, I wouldn’t oppose going to Kaya Malay.

Nice staff + Nice food = Awesome Experience. This was our first time trying Malaysian cuisine-not sure if the tastes were authentic but the food was great. We were greeted by a friendly staff member as we came in. Prior to coming to the restaurant we already had a list of what to order so it didn't take long for us to put in our order. The waitress didn't hold a pen and notepad like other waitresses do and just memorized our entire order. We were afraid she'd left out something but she told us she got it.

We ordered the appetizer sampler, gado-gado, rendang beef, eggplant with garlic chili and some coconut rice to go with it. For drinks we had the cucumber lemonade and the ginger Citrus soda. As like all asian restaurants, the dishes didn't come all at once, but it didn't matter as we were busy taking pictures of the first few dishes served. The appetizer sampler was a lot more than we expected and the taste of the sauces were spot on, especially the white curry for the roti canai. That was my absolute favourite of the night. I literally could not stop eating it. The calamari was also really good. Crunchy exterior but the soft chewiness of the calamari was there. The satay and samosa were pretty normal. The gado-gado was not one of our favourite dishes. It seem to lack in flavour. It was not peanutty enough and we thought that a hint of spicy would have made the dish stand out more. Next came the eggplant garlic chilli which was so fragrant that we could not resist and dig in right when it was served. The rendang beef was pretty good. My friend liked both the rendang beef and eggplant a lot so he took care of that while I slowly finished off the appetizer sampler.

Our drinks were very similar in nature. Very refreshing and packed with citrus flavour. I didn't tastes any sort of cucumber in mine, but there were a few slices in my mug. So to me, it was just a regular lemonade. We definitely had to save some room for dessert so we ordered the Pandan Cheesecake and Deep fried durian ice cream. The second waitress might be new and got our orders wrong. A few minutes after ordering, a bowl of durian ice cream was placed at our table. I immediately knew this was not the deep fried ice cream we had order. We called the waitress to inform her of the error made and she told us that because durian ice cream was also an option this error was made. She asked if she still wanted the deep fried ice cream, we said yes. Later she gave us the durian ice cream on the house.

The pandan cheesecake was beautiful to look at. It didn't taste like a regular cheesecake, more of a mouse with pineapple jelly filling but I didn't mind. The durian ice cream was very smooth with a strong durian smell but didn't have the durian taste we were looking for. The deep fried durian ice cream was interesting to my friend as he never had a deep fried ice cream before, but the durian taste and smell was really lacking in this one. Presentation was nice for this dish was also very nice but had to be eaten quickly or else the ice cream would melt. Overall, we enjoyed our experience at Kaya Malay Bistro.

Great authentic Malaysian food and GREAT service!. I"m from Singapore and I enjoy the authenticity of the dishes at this restaurant. I have so many favorites from their menu. You gotta try their Roti Canai, Langkwai Jumbo Prawns, Satay, Gado Gado and Tofu Goreng from their Appetizer. From their mains Hainanese Chicken with their Hainanese Chicken Rice, Chicken Curry, Eggplant dish, Beef Rendang, Duck Red Curry. And now for the very best of my favorites are the Ipoh Char Hor Fun, Char Kway Teow and their Mee Goreng. I didn't get all this in one visit. I have dined here many times and their consistency is great. THeir service is excellent too. THey have a great team of servers who are attentive, hospitable and always friendly. I highly recommend Kaya Malay Bistro to anyone from Singapore or Malaysia who feels homesick to dine here.

No photos on the menu. Appetizer Sampler (roti canai, chicken satay, vegetarian samosa, calamari & salad) $9/$17
Roti Canai 4/5 – pretty good quality, fluffy and crispy on the outside and soft inside. The sauce could be a little richer.
Chicken satay 4/5 – not try at all. Smaller satays than others. The peanut sauce was not as runny as the roti canai sauce.
Vegetarian samosa 2/5 – no better than the frozen samosas. The filling was tiny with lots of potatoes. Could not taste a lot of spices too.
Calamari 3.5/5 – batter on the thicker side. The dipping sauce was weird. I thought it was dou ban jiang + water. I wish they used Thai chili sauce or something.

Papaya Green Salad $8 2/5 – lots of jicama with little green papaya and no mango at all. There was some mango sauce and that was it. Could not taste any fish sauce or anything. I thought this was the Korean radish dish.

Tofu Goreng $7.5 3.5/5 – the menu says it’s the signature dish. You had to have this dish quick before the sauce soaked into the tofu. It would be better if the bean sprouts and cucumbers on the side instead.

Sambal Green Bean $11 3.5/5 – too watery. I thought this dish is suppose to be dry. The sambal sauce they used was too salty. Too little green beans too.

Rendang Chicken $16 3.5/5 – Sauce was flavourful but could be a little more spicy. I would call this a curry more than a rendang. Lots of potatoes. bigger portions than expected (after the tiny sambal beans). Came with a bowl of rice.

They need to add some pictures on the menu. There was not even a single picture. The menu was only pages of protectors. Good service. The servers kept checking on us even we were sitting at the back. This place also have fresh young coconut @$5.5.

Delicious!! but..... Food:
the restaurant provides delicious and various fusion southern Asian food. They make better pad thai than some thai restaurants. the first two time i visited, i had adult size meals. however, when i visit it again last month, i noticed that the meal size went down. A pad thai is 80% left compared to before. same price , same taste, but less portion. i will still go there but not that often.

the pic is a durian and mango puff with vanilla ice cream. the ice cream was delicious and nice size, not too sweet, i like it. the puff was hot and crispy , nice smell of butter , but not too much durian or mango inside, therefore, these 2 tastes were weak.

Went there for lunch today with my wife (lunch date which does not happen often) so it was important (she wanted fish tacos, I said let's try here ) that it be good. We were both very impressed with the service ("Mai" was attentive, filling cups with tea and water, suggesting a side order of Sambal Beans, describing how the whole wheat roti was different than the regular roti) all with a pleasant smile and efficiency. The food was excellent - tender lamb shoulders (Lamb Rengu), crispy fresh beans (Sambal beans), Mee Goreng that was tasty and not oily). We were too full for dessert! Will definitely recommend this place and come again.

Definitely Recommended. This was my second visit to Kaya Malay Bistro and I was even more impressed with the food and service than the last time.

We loved how modern it looked and how spacious it was. Service was great - surprising given how busy it was. On top of that, we were a particularly needy party of 9 that arrived at different times. They still delivered great service with a smile and even managed to remember to give everyone a sampler of their ginger citrus soda, which was pretty tasty.

Before going, don't forget to check out their daily specials on their Facebook page. They have some pretty sweet deals that they advertise on there but not in store. Be sure to load the picture up on your smartphone when you order :) I took advantage of their Sunday special - the Seafood Bouillabasse. It usually goes for $22 but it was $15 for Sunday. Highly recommended for any seafood lovers. It goes really well with their coconut rice too :)

The food was amazing and came in fairly generous portions. Almost everyone in my party over-ordered. My recommendation would be to get the appetizer sampler for 2 since you get to taste a little bit of everything for $15. We ordered quite a few dishes and dove right in, so I don't have pictures to share. However, there were no complaints at all! Everyone was quite full by the end of it and they liked it because the flavouring wasn't as heavy as what they expected from their experiences with other Malaysian restaurants. My friends were all there for the first time and said it was a great recommendation. Will be returning again.

Birthday DInner. Arrived a bit late to a friend's birthday as everyone was eating already but when I gave them my order, the food came rather quickly to my surprise.

Had the Hainanese Chicken which was really good and Singaporean Laksa as this was a little dissapointing since it wasn't spicy compared to other places I visited.

Service was great and quick so big ups to them.

If you are thinking about going to Banana Leaf, give Kaya a try. In my opinion, Kaya is more authentic Malay than Banana Leaf. Reasonable priced as well. I like how they have half orders for the vegetable side dishes.
I ordered the nasi goreng, green bean sambal, hainanese chicken, pisang goreng ( banana fritter) and the bill came to $32. Overall, I am very satisfy and give it 8.5 stars, the Hainanese chicken can be improved a bit more.
It's a must try!

Tasty food and modern decor. The menu is full of flavorful and well presented dishes. I particularly enjoyed the roti canai. If you like tapas style dining, start with the appy combo. Definitely worth a visit if you haven't been.

Tasty, fresh. We ordered satay, veggies, and roti canai. The veggies were fresh and bright in a delicious curry sauce. The staff were attentive, maybe a bit too much, but nice anyway. The price is reasonable for the service and the food. It's easy to get carried away with ordering lots of the $6 appetizers/tapas but still, well-priced and very tasty.

I really like this place and will be back. Food was excellent, service was excellent, the restaurant was clean and modern and we came for happy hour and got a $10 pitcher of dead frog- that's a good value. The only thin bad I can say is that at the end of it all my bill before tip was $56.... For 2 ppl. So not a cheap restaurant and the potions could be a bit bigger but either way the foo is amazing so it's all good!

Good!. Excellent, attentive, kind and cheerful service, clean water closets, delicious soft shell crab, great kuih dadar dessert, would HIGHLY recommend. I'm not a food critic but anybody can tell that this malay bistro is great. Tender rack of lamb, crispy soft shell crab. Nicely presented, with added creativity. I really enjoyed my meal so much that if I was wearing a belt I would have to loosen it.

Who loves Malaysian food? I certainly do, especially at Kaya Malay Bistro on West Broadway anyway! What brought me back here for the second time around were the perks given to me by Qooway! I will tell you more about it at the end of this blog post, so keep reading to find out more! This restaurant is quite big with a lot of tables and comfortable seating and has an overall clean, pleasant environment. The service was great; our server guided us through the menu and answered all our questions relating to the food and drinks. The food selection is enormous, so if you are a finicky eater, you will have no problem choosing out what you want to eat. Normally, I do not order any drinks at a restaurant, but for this occasion, I decided to try out the Virgin Pina Colada Slush ($6.50) . Basically, it is pineapple juice with cream and coconut syrup. I would say this drink was average. It was definitely refreshing, not too sweet, but it could use a bit more pineapple juice and coconut syrup to make it a perfect thirst quenching drink for me. Moving on to the tapas, we ordered the Roti Canai ($7) and the Mini Steamed Mussels ($10) . Let me tell you about their Roti Canai, they are very well made! This handrolled flat bread is so light while still being flakey and crispy. It also came with a semi-strong curry dipping sauce on the side which actually had a sweet taste and it worked well with the Roti. The Mini Steamed Mussels was not a huge hit for me as the broth had a strong licorice taste to it even though the menu stated that the sauce consisted of coconut, fennel, cumin, and ginger garlic. The licorice taste definitely lingered around in my mouth the entire meal. As well, there just were not that many mussels in this dish although this was expected since this was the mini version of the dish. Was it worth it? You be the judge. Along with the tapas, we ordered Singapore Laksa ($10) . This vermicelli noodle in soup was by far my favorite. It beats all Singapore Laksas that

I visited Kaya two days after  Banana Leaf  and I am far more happier with the service, food quality, and comfortable seating. When I left, my stomach was happy, I was happy, and throughout dinner I was able to see all my dishes. Kaya appears to be a husband and wife combo management team, the wife oversees the front of the house and service, and the husband controls and oversees the kitchen, and quality of food control. Coming on a Monday rainy night, the restaurant was not very busy but they had a few seated tables and pick up orders. The interior of the restaurant has bright colored walls, dark tables and chairs, half booth seating along the wall, and a high ceiling painted black.  FRESH YOUNG COCONUT, ROTI CANAI, SATAYS, SEAFOOD PINEAPPLE FRIED RICE, MINI SOFT SHELL CRAB,  JUMBO KING PRAWN IN MALAYSIAN KAM HEONG SAUCE, RENDANG

Back for more of the cuisine I love: Malaysian. This time we were trying the more recently opened "Kaya Bistro" on Broadway, only blocks away from its competition "Banana Leaf" ( http://www.vieamaggi.com/2013/07/banana-leaf-malaysian-restaurant.html ). Seeing as I came here with the same guest that I dined with there, a lot of our dining was a comparison of the two.   Heading out early on a Friday gave us easy opportunity to find metered parking right out in front. It also allowed us to be one of the few through the doors first. "Kaya" opens at at 11:30am, but by 11:25am people were already at the door pulling to see if it was indeed open. I mean the staff were still cleaning, windows still needed to be scrubbed down, and the floors still needed to be swept. Taking our time and going in at 11:35am we were already the 4th table being seated. Quickly after us, within minutes the restaurant was 3/4 full. Take out orders waiting at the bar, large groups stopping in for lunch, and couples w

Kaya, a Malaysian/Southeast Asian Bistro located on Broadway & Oak, had their grand opening yesterday night. During the previous week, they invited everyone to come in and enjoy complimentary tapas and wine tasting. I booked a table at their first dinner service at 6pm and the place was filled already by the time I arrived with W and K. There was complimentary red and white wine tasting at the front of the restaurant though my friend, who booked for the 9pm dinner service said they had run out by then. I tried the Yalumba Viognier white wine from Australia. It smells good and has a fruity taste. Yeah, I'm not a wine expert. There was a lot of Tapas to choose from though we decided not order any since there was going to be complementary ones given to us. There was a few that stood out that I wouldn't mind going back to try:  mini soft shell crab, whole wheat roti, and satays. We were given a sampler platter of tapas. One of the reasons I like Vancouver is the diversity of the food. Specifically, Malaysian food. Kaya Malay Bistro does a wonderful take on street style Malaysian food. Reminds me of Hawker Bar in Toronto. Menu The daily special drink was a passion fruit soda. Yum! Passion Fruit Soda Mango Smoothie Hubby had the Kari Lamb. The lamb was succulent and the lively flavors made my taste buds dance. Kari Lamb Boneless lamb shoulder stewed in curry, infused with cumin, fennel and coconut milk I had the Satay chicken, gado gado and rice. The chicken had lots of flavor, and I could have eaten the peanut sauce all day long. I love gado gado; a take on an Indonesian cooked vegetable salad. There was also a green salad on the side with a sweet mustard dressing. Satay Chicken, Gado Gado with Rice Famous Malaysian skewers served with a bean sprout tofu salad topped with peanut dressing. This led her to decide on the first dish: Whole Wheat Roti w/ Curry Sauce ($7); there's a regular wheat version, but we decided on the healthier alternative. Roti is a hand rolled layered flat bread that is just destined to be eaten with curry!

Yes, I know I’m not a fan of drinks served in mason jars. If you put that aside, the drink itself was very refreshing.

I recently met up with a friend for business over a warm bowl of laksa (these in my opinion are the best kind of meetings!). I’ve heard lots of great things about Kaya that has recently opened up on Oak and Broadway and have been meaning to try for a while now. They have lunch specials which are a little cheaper than the dinner menu and you can add a drink special for $2 more on top of your meal. Great deal. We started off the Roti Canai ($6) which was AMAZING here! It was crispy, doughy, hot and fresh. It’s served with curry sauce which is made for dipping and a bit of the flavour. But seriously, I could eat this on it’s own it’s so good. I love roti canai. I ordered the Singapore Laksa ($8) – the soup was enormous, made with coconut broth and served with shrimp, egg, tofu, fish cake, sprouts and a lot of noodles. The noodles used are the skinnier noodles (I don’t remember whether it was vermicelli or a different kind of egg/rice noodle). I could barely finish the noodles. However, ou

January 31st marks the beginning of the Chinese New Year. In celebration, Haywire Wines has released a limited edition Pinot Noir. To commemorate the release of this exceptional vintage, TownHall  and Okanagan Crush Pad  invited me to a wine paring event focusing on Asian food and wine pairings. Okanagan Crush Pad  has introduced a guide to pairing BC wines with Asian cuisine to celebrate the Year of the Horse. The event took place at Kaya Malay Bistro with dishes created by Head Chef Lim. The menu was inspired by the countries of Japan, China, Taiwan, Vietnam and Korea. This was truly an extraordinary culinary feat! We started with appetizers of chicken satay And vegetable samosas This two appetizers were paired with Haywire’s The Bub 2012 sparkling wine. I found this wine so versatile and easy to drink. Made with 51% Pinot Noir and 49% Chardonnay, this wine features some mineral qualities, giving it a refreshing character. Goes perfectly with any spicy dish or own its own. Followin

A couple weeks I called up a group of friends to have dinner at Kaya Malay Bistro , a Malaysian restaurant in Vancouver that I’ve been wanting to try. Since we had 7 people, I made sure to make a reservation, however, when we got there, we still ended up waiting 40 minutes for our table. We were 15 minutes late for our reservation and we assumed our table was given away, the waiting sucked. The waiting made us even hungrier and we ended up ordering a lot of dishes. We started with appetizers Roti Canai and Satay skewers . Both were quite delicious and authentic. I suggest ordering the chicken satay, because compared to the beef satay, they were much more juicer and tender. Some main dishes we ordered and worth mentioning were the Eggplant with garlic chili sauce , Mee goren , and Rendan beef . These were my favourites of the night because they were the most flavouful. Some disappointments were the Char Kuey Toew and Singaporean pork chop . The char ku
