This place is a real gem! The croissants are amazing and their desserts are fantastic. That coupled with a great cappuccino and you are in heaven :)
The place feels like home! The croissants (I particularly like the double almond apple), the matcha black sesame cake and the sandwiches are delicious. Oh, the members of staff are friendly! Highly recommended to all!
Love this bakery! They have amazing croissants and the Matcha Black Sesame cake is perfection
This place has amazing baked goods at reasonable prices and super friendly, unpretentious staff. The coconut croissant, cheddar scone and London Fog creme puff are killer!
Loved visiting Bakery Date today. Amazing croissants, amazing puffs and good coffee!! A must visit!
Their Matcha black sesame cake is worth the drive from Richmond. Love it!
A decent and cozy place for friend gathering. Yummy desserts and pastry match perfectly with the house coffee. The strawberry frasier and the custard puff are highly recommended! Love the place!
Been here several times and it is pretty great
Nice little café... Delicious pastries... When around in the area of 13th and Commercial Drive you should definitely visit this place...
Their croissants are fantastic. We their traditional, double baked almond, and pretzel croissants and they were all delicious.
Their croissants are amazing and they sell out so early every day!
Friendly staff, very nice atmosphere, tasty in-house baked pastries, great coffee. Keep up the good work! Will definitely come back again.
Good hangout place with great dessert and coffee.
Really glad Bakery Sate is in the neighbourhood!
Amazing work! I have also know when Eric Ho was my student that he will make amazing breads and pastries. Your talent and passion, hard work, dedication and keen business sense truly shines through your work. Great job!!!
Cozy cafe with delicious pastries! The espressos are consistently good. I haven’t had a cappuccino, latte or mochas that I didn’t like. You know when sometimes you go to a coffee shop and your drink taste different from last time you visited, and not as good? Well I haven’t had that experience in this cafe.
I've only been here a few times, but everything I've tried is excellent. The croissants are crispy on the outside, buttery and flakey on the inside. The cream puffs have a nice crunchy streusel exterior and luxurious creamy filling (the salted caramel is my fav). Even the sandwiches are pretty good.
Although quite small, Bakery Sate offers a pretty impressive assortment of delicious looking cakes and pastries, and more uniquely flavoured croissants (Salted Egg Yolk Custard Croissant, Matcha Double Baked). I've had the opportunity to try their Nutella Banana Croissant Bread Pudding and Cheesecake.
Nutella Banana Croissant Bread Pudding ($3.5): 4/5; I love nutella, I think it goes great with bananas (and just about everything else), and I like croissants, so this sounded like a sure hit. The bread pudding had a nice crispy outer crust of buttery croissants and was filled with generous chunks of bananas. I did wish that there was more nutella, but that's probably because I'm a huge nutella lover.
Cheesecake ($5.5): 4.5/5; I've heard great things about their cheesecake, and so I went for it in spite of its plainer appearance (in comparison to the other cakes on display). I was not disappointed. The curd was smooth, creamy, and had the firmer texture that I want in cheesecakes (I'm 100% New York when it comes to cheesecakes). It was coated with crushed walnuts, which not only added a good crunchy texture, but also a great nutty flavour. The crust also had a nutty flavour, and was a welcomed textural contrast to the curd. It was topped with a thick layer of sweet whipping cream that went surprisingly well with the tanginess of the cake. Overall, this was easily the best cheesecake that I've had in a long time.
My visit to Bakery Sate has certainly made me a fan. I cannot wait to be back to try out some of their other delicious-looking cakes and pastries.
Top notch dessert in Vancouver. Each individual piece was well-made. Not too sweet with enough density. We tried the Nutella banana bread pudding. Had more banana flavour than Nutella. After warming it up it became soft banana bread. London fog cream puff was superb. Creme Brulee had thicker consistency but exuded a hint of espresso. Cheese cake was dense too almost like Trees Organic. Tiramisu tart the shell was tasty but the actual cream part had mousse/marshmallowy texture which I personally don't like. Overall great place and a must go back for another visit!
Warm and welcoming bakery. My favourite part is looking through the window to their kitchen and seeing the magic happen! The lattes were lovey and my cheesecake was perfection!
After Kishimoto we wandered around looking for dessert and settled on Bakery Sate, for its good Yelp ratings. We tried three cakes:. Matcha Black Sesame ($4.95) GF dacquoise, GF chiffon, black sesame moussline, matcha white chocolate parfait. Lavender Milk Chocolate Raspberry ($4.95) GF chocolate sponge, lavender milk chocolate mousse, raspberry mousse
One of the best sweets I ever had in Vancouver. We ordered a cheese cake, black forest cake and a strawberry something (I forgot its name :( ).
This is a lovely bakery in the Victoria/east 12 area of Vancouver. We went for brunch and tried coffee, matcha, baguette, corn bread with matcha/sesame cake and London fog cream puff.
The americano and matcha latte was good and the recommended match/sesame cake is delicious. London fog cream puff is strong with London fog taste and crust is good. Baguette and corn bread needed more refinement.
I think this bakery is still finding it's signature goodies. Definitely worth a try and a good addition to vancouver's pastry locale.
Nice cafe with delicious desserts. I particularly enjoyed their cake selection the most. We had the Strawberry Frasier cake, and Matcha Black Sesame Cake. Both weren't overly sweet, and they had decent texture and flavor. We also got a Mont Blanc cream puff, which was packed with chestnut flavor. There's also a big selection of pastries, which seems to be quite popular as well.
LOVE this place. The apple pie & almond double-baked croissant is amazing. So are their cream puffs and canneles! This is perhaps less important but I like that they use unsweetened almond milk in their drinks so that you can add sweetness if you prefer (which I don't!).
Why I love this place: lovely owners. Amazing cakes! Tried a large selection and was pleasantly happy!
Would I come back: Yes
Would I recommend it to others: Yes
The best croissants in town!. I resisted signing up for an Urbanspoon account...until my French friend took me to Bakery Sate and I couldn't get over how good its croissants are. And I was even more bothered that this little corner bakery doesn't get enough attention and acknowledgement for its craft! (But maybe it's better that way for me... I can enjoy the quiet and keep the croissants to myself!)
So here's my first review on Urbanspoon. I'm a huge fan of croissants and though I've never eaten the real deal in France, have tried quite a few in my lifetime in several different cities around the world. The butter croissant here blew me away. They manage to perfect the simple classic - buttery yet light, crisp on the outside and flakey on the inside, just the perfect amount of moisture (not too dry nor moist). There are other bakeries in town that get all that hype about their croissants, but I find others too dense, too sweet, too salty, too moist, too dry or just too pretentious and pricey just cuz they're "French"...
This place has a whole bunch of different croissant flavours if you're into that, too. Matcha, hazelnut, bacon pretzel, coconut and a few others that I can't remember. I tried the matcha one and was amazed that they figured out how to incorporate the matcha flavour in there while still keeping the integrity of the croissant itself. I bought a butter croissant to go and it still tasted amazing after reheating it (quick steaming and then toasting to crisp it) two days later.
The guys at the counter were also super friendly and helpful, true to the Commercial Dr spirit. The place was relatively quiet too, so I could have a nice conversation with my friend without having to shout. The only downside is that I had a matcha latte with my croissant and being Japanese, I have to say it was terrible. But this place is run by a professional patissiere and not a certified matcha expert so I forgive them :)
AMAZING CAKES!. I haven't tried their pastries and breads, but I had one of each of their cakes - all 4 were absolutely delicious! The green tea black sesame one had a great flavor that wasn't overpowering and the chocolate salted caramel was decadent and rich. The strawberry frasier had a great texture, but was a little too sweet so the fresh strawberry taste got muddled, and the praline hazelnut didn't have enough frosting to make it flavorful throughout. Aside from these minor complaints though, I can't wait to come back!
They taste best after you refrigerate them for a while though, otherwise the chocolate is still watery and the mousse is still jiggly.
Nothing more to say other than delicious.
This bakery has potential!. We finally got to try it after waiting for 2 weeks. Tried the double baked almond croissant, and matcha croissant. This is the first time we come across matcha croissant. Not bad. I have to say Good. There is potential. Bottom line - Yes, we will come back again.
Amazing service, baked goods and ambience! Loved it!
Well made, bakery/boutique. I bought a bunch of items for a house party/pot luck a few days ago. Everything was very well made (had the strawberry fraises, and the chocolate squares, and the cheesecake. The care in preparation shows in both the taste and appearance. Everybody at the party loved the desserts (not to mention were the first desserts there to be completely consumed!).
Owner and staff are very hard working, pleasant, and great people. I would highly recommend this place.
Quaint neighbourhood café with delectable muffins. Been to this quaint little neighbourhood bakery café thrice in the past fortnight -- the americano i had every time was awesome! This morning i had their new item: cornbread muffin. LOVE IT! I am a muffin addict and connoisseur, this muffin is among the best i have had: It has a lovely texture, and is optimally savoury and sweet. My companion also enjoyed very much her gluten-free blueberry muffin. Will try their croissants some time as they look delectable. I initiated a pleasant conversation with Jenny, whose husband Eric is the owner of and baker for the café, and who told me they were actually just open about a month ago. I do not live in that neighbourhood, but will go there in the coming Saturdays before going to the Trout Lake Farmers Market a few blocks away), and will also go there often when i am in or around that neighbourhood.
Absolutely delicious! Such amazingly fresh and tasty baked goods. Not a huge selection, but you can tell it's because of the time and care taken to create the treats. Highly recommend it!
Great new place to chill. Visited this bakery/coffee shop for the first time, it was located in the beginning of Commercial dr close to Victoria dr, so it didn't feel as far as the other coffee places on this street. This place offers in-house baked pastries, me and my friend ordered a matcha/seasame cake and a strawberry cake plus two coffees. Usually when it comes to matcha, it's either hit or miss. Luckily, the matcha flavor really stood out from this cake, and the sesame flavor tasted good too. I like both cakes, also because the sweetness was done just right!
For the coffee, the shop uses JJ beans. I had a sip of my friend's cappuccino. It was strong, so if you like strong coffee you are going to love it.
Overall, it was a very nice experience during my visit. The staff were nice, food was good, and I love the interior design. I am already planning for my next visit.
