One of the most authentic and highest quality Japanese eateries in the city. I have dined in this restaurant dozens of times, for occasions of all kinds, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone. I now live in Japan, and can say that the food at Kibune rivals the very best in all of Japan, and the service is even better.

A small Japanese restaurant in Kits. We were surprised to see not many choices of Nigriri sushi on the menu. However, we later figured that they have it on the Japanese menu behind the chef.
We have ordered Aji sashimi and two deluxe sushi combo. The fish were pretty fresh. We wouldn't mind coming back when we are in the area next time.

Kibune Sushi is located right by Kitsilano beach. Though it isn’t very big, the place is easy to spot; just look for the oriental-looking storefront with a Japanese sign. This cozy little restaurant gave off a very traditional/authentic vibe. They were quite understaffed, as on several occasion during dinner, it took several attempts to get the attention of our servers. In terms of price, the food here is on the expensive side of the spectrum. We’d like to believe that it is due to the quality of the cooking, and to a certain extent, the neighbourhood in which this restaurant is situated.

For our dinner for two, we ordered the following items:

Miso marinated sablefish ($14)

Ocean maki ($7.50)

Osashimi dinner ($25)

Miso-marinated Sablefish
We really like to order sablefish, and this one didn't disappoint! The fish was very buttery, and the miso taste is strong but not overpowering. We thought the cherry orange (?) was a good substitute for a lemon wedge. It gave the dish a even greater depth of flavour.

Ocean Maki is supposedly one of Kibune's original creations. The sushi roll contained tobiko, avocado, cucumber, and hamachi (yellow-tail). These were devoured pretty quickly :P Considering the fish, $7.50 was a decent price.

Osashimi dinner
You get a little bit of everything - miso soup, spinach goma-ae, shrimp sunomono, assorted tempura, assorted sashimi, and dessert (fruits or ice cream).

Every component (ok maybe that not the ice cream), was prepared with delicacy. Soup was hot and flavourful. Salads were refreshing, and not drenched in sauce. Tempura (prawn, carrot, green bean, and pumpkin) were lightly battered and crisp.

Our boat was loaded with 13 slices of sashimi: tuna, wild salmon, hokkigai, octopus, tai, and hamachi (yay!). These were high quality sashimi, as we could really taste the distinct flavours of each fish. Even the hokkigai and tako (typically bland and chewy in most other places) had great flavours and textures.

After all these years (over a decade) in Vancouver, I don’t know how I could have missed this place! Kibune Sushi opened its doors at this original location on Canada Day, July 1st 1982!. Even when I was walking towards the entrance, it gave me a feeling of home… some little sushi place in the neighbourhood where I grew up as a child.

Authentic Japanese experience in a boutique restaurant.

We ordered the sashimi special and roast beef in ginger teriyaki sauce. Portions are a but smaller than what you would normally expect, but you could taste the difference in the food.

Really good sushi! Not much for combination assortments of Sushi and sashimi in the same dish, but delicious nonetheless.

It's a nice little sushi house. Nice service, nice food. Bathroom not clean, and is small. Sashimi was very fresh. Maki had some interesting flavours I had not experienced before. 7/10

Whimsical But Traditional. Their cheerful staff makes the contemporary local crowd feel at home in a dining room filled with West Coast-y interior. At the busy sushi bar, chefs create impressive platters of sashimi, occasionally apologizing for a less than perfect toro that is nonetheless much better quality than what we are used to consuming at many Robson sushi bars. A salad of spinach and enoki mushrooms is redolent of sesame oil, and yellowtail carpaccio is drizzled with red pepper-ponzu sauce. One can ask for his/her usual here, but Uni Tempura and the grilled sea bass with Saikyo miso are more interesting. Whimsical but traditional menu will keep many end up staying for late drinks.

I have been going here for years and have to say its some of the best if not THE best sushi in the city. The prices are a bit higher than average but it's worth it. Even the kappa rolls taste amazing. Small place so if there's a loud group in there it will effect the whole place-- just a heads up. :)

The very first place I ever had sushi, more than 20 years ago now (!). In all the years since I have never had a bad or even mediore meal here. I live on the other side of town now, so I don't end up going very often, but they are still one of my all-time favourite restaurants.

Good choice!. When I think of Kitsilano, Kibune pops in my head immediately. A very friendly place to have dinner after a day at the beach and pool. Very relaxed atmosphere and a menu full of yummy treats.

The restaurant is very small but it kind of feels like you are sitting in a Japanese restaurant in japan. It's situated in a great part of Kitsilano which adds to the enjoyment. The waitresses are extremely nice but they DON'T SPEAK ENGLISH WELL. There have been many mix ups in my order because of this, but the mistakes are always quickly corrected. One waitress is fully fluent and most of the workers speak basic English. They are always extremely nice to you and the food comes very quickly. the food is great and not too pricey. You might see David Suzuki!

Great things..Small Packages!. I read about this place in a local entertainment magazine.
And had a hard time finding it, but it was delicious, fairly priced, and full of authentic Japanese bonhomie.
It's a small place with a bar and a few low-to-the-floor tables, so maybe call ahead.
Next time I'm in Vancouver I will definitely go back!

Best in Vancouver! IMHO the WORLD!. I've been coming to Kibune for 16 years. When I read other reviews, and reflect on comments over time, the word 'expensive' comes to mind from people who have come to the restaurant and who are unfamiliar with anything other than the menu and prices. Once they try it, they are, however, hooked.

The other review at this site cites 'cheap' four times. In short, people in Van are used to the all-you-can-eat or take-out experience where sushi is concerned. If you are looking for anything involving your birthday in which you use the term 'cheap', then stay home and cook. What a silly choice of measurement to gauge fine cuisine on a cheapness scale. Was it good? I bet you came back, but you probably couldn't get your head around the take-out stuff you get at the food court near your office and got hung up on paying more than $7.

Go out for a special event like Kibuneand pay the extra money, yea heathens.! Like anything in life, a wee bit more and it generally elevates the experience. As my dear Scottish gran said, "Cheap in action, cheap in spirit". If a Scotsman says you're cheap, well... hang your head in shame!

I've had sushi all over North America, Europe, Africa (yikes!), and Japan. When I was in Kyoto, I couldn't find a place that met the standards of Kibune.

The humble spirit and warmth of the Kibune team make it a joy to come in and enjoy and wide variety of food. Unlike certain high-profile Japanese places in the city, the chefs are not expected to adhere to the boss's style- they can each make the same meal with their own style and regional flair. Ask any of the chefs about what the difference is on their take on food and they will elaborate on regional style, technique, and their own dimension to making great cuisine.

Endo-san has been spoiling us for over 26 years and his team are tenured to over 20 years each. This longevity speaks volumes to it being a favoured spot for many locals, visitors, celebs, and fans of sushi that transcends boundaries.

A very nice restaurant, with a work ethic like no other. Come in for an experience and you will not be disappointed.

Solid, good food with vegetarian options, including a vegetarian bento box with kappa roll, your choice of tofu and veggie tempura, at Kibune Sushi in Kitsilano...

I love the look of Kibune Sushi  because of its traditional Japanese style. All chef and staff are Japanese. Food is very traditional and there are a few special dishes too.

However, things we tried are about average. No surprise.

Kibune Sushi! This little gem is located right next to Hapa Izakaya, another stellar Japanese restaurant, though the two are worlds apart in terms of their menu items and entire atmospheres. Despite the fact that they are both great, they seem to co-exist beautifully, neither one putting the other out of business.
