This is a casual diner specializing in American comfort food. They have two locations, one in Kits and one in Gastown. I've visited their Kits location several months ago and decided to check out their Gastown location. During the latter visit, I had their Big Mountie and Southern Belly Biscuit. While neither dish was perfect, I quite enjoyed both, in particular their French toast and pulled pork. The food was very hearty and filling, and the prices are quite reasonable. Service-wise, the staff weren't the most attentive, but they are quite cheerful and friendly. All in all, this is a place that I'd recommend checking out for some tasty, hearty American comfort food.
Big Mounties ($15.50):
4/5
This consisted of three slices of French toast sandwiching a layer of pulled pork and a piece of fried chicken, and was topped with two eggs. I LOVED the French toast: they were soft and fluffy with a wonderful sweet fragrance of cinnamon. The fried chicken was not the greatest: even though it was reasonably juicy for white meat and well-seasoned, the breading was quite soggy. I did really enjoy their pulled pork however, which was very tender and juicy, and d a nice sweetness, which I like in my pulled pork. Personally, I'd go with their Pulled Pork Monte Cristo, which is a similar dish but missing the top layer of fried chicken.
Southern Belly Biscuit ($13.50):
3.5/5
This consisted of bacon, an egg, cheddar cheese, biscuits, and two sausage patties, all topped with gravy and slices of jalapeno peppers, and came with a side of hashbrowns. I found the biscuits themselves to be a bit too soft and soggy, without any discernable flavour; I actually preferred the ones from Jethros a bit more. The gravy was not overly thick/gummy, but was also a bit bland for my taste. The meat was tasty however: the bacon was quite crispy and the sausage patties were tender, juicy, and had a nice spicy flavour. The jalapenos also helped lend more flavour to the dish. I also really enjoyed their hashbrowns, which were shredded and very crispy on the outside and was also quite well-seasoned.
Summary:
Food: 4/5
Price: 4/5
Service: 3.5/5
Overall: 4/5
Recommendations: Pulled Pork Monte Cristo, French toast
I have been here several times as it’s pretty close to where I work. I have tried their veggie burger, chicken burger and veggie scrambled eggs with toast and hash browns. They have never disappointed. Both in quality or quantity. So happy that I found a place that gives you excellent service and amazing food.
Deacon's Corner has the perfect balance of old school diner meets contemporary cool foodie hangout. Do not let my photographs fool you. There were always people coming in and out of Deacon’s Corner with smiles on their faces and a nice thing to say. (I just like to try and respect people’s privacy when I can.) In fact the serving staff were so super friendly and cheerful, you can not help but be in a good mood when you visit.
One of the guests told us that before their recent renovations the place truly looked like it had been plucked out of the 60s, but with all the wear and tear, so the changes were great improvements. I loved it. A perfect blend of retro and modern.
We both ordered the Carolina Pulled Pork and Pancakes but got the mini (yes, that is the small portion) which Chef J. C. (Juan Carlo) used his creative and artistic foodie talents to make extra special for us! Oh my goodness I could not stop laughing when this adorable plate came to our table!
And wow, WOW, it was so good! The eggs were butter-basted, the pulled pork sweet but not too sweet, absolutely delicious, and I think those were the fluffiest pancakes I have ever had. I have not stopped thinking about this delicious brunch since I indulged…
Deacon’s Corner may not have been around since the 50s (they opened in 2009) but it has to be one of the coolest diners I have ever visited. Its location bridges East Van and Gastown so its setting is a little rough around the edges but the customers and staff make it feel like home.
It was the perfect brunch. Everything was charming and the food? OMG, the food was so delicious. I MUST go back!
Solid greasy spoon with a focus on Southern favourites. Think biscuits & gravy, grits, fried chicken but they also offer classics like bennies and scrambles. Hashbrowns are rösti-style (shredded) - my favourite. Good value (huge portions), fast service. Very heavy food but sometimes that's just what you need!
Always get their fried chicken anything. Hashbrowns are superb too, very crispy! Gravy is yum, coffee is good. Staff is always friendly. Yum!
Drive by this place everyday and I've had it recommended by multiple people. I finally tried it yesterday and had the chicken and biscuits with gravy, It came with a decent size piece of fried chicken, buttermilk biscuits, country gravy, 2 eggs and hashbrowns. It all tasted great and would definitely order it again. The chicken was cooked well, not dry and had a good crunch and flavour. The biscuits were a tad dry but the taste and gravy made up for it, the hashbrowns were you're standard diner hashbrowns and eggs were cooked perfectly. Service was quick and friendly, I got there just before the lunch rush and it seemed to fill up quick. I will definitely be returning.
For me, this is one of the original diners that started re-vamping the neighborhood. I started eating here before social media comments came to be. I'm glad it has sustained and kept up its east side ambience. The food is still good, especially the breakfast.
After being declined breakfast 10 minutes to the 2pm cutoff at the “Urban Fare”, we were searching for an all day breakfast joint downtown. I recalled a previous trip here and now suggested this all day breakfast diner to meet my our needs now. The entrance was a set of heavy double doors, made of wood and accented in cast iron. Past them was a warm diner with hardwood floors and faux leather booths. Although the sign instructed you to find a clean seat and help yourself, one of the staff is sure to greet you upon entry and repeat the same message.
One-liner: Decent diner with great fried chicken making for a hearty meal
Highlight: Southern Fried Chicken

I’d never heard of Deacon’s Corner, but went in for lunch with some work mates one day. I had an awesome sandwich that had bacon, avocado and goats cheese in it which is kind of amazing, plus they let me do half fries/half salad. The sandwich was on the expensive side but it was so delicious that I wasn’t all that bothered about the price. The place had a cool diner feel, and I would go back to try their all day breakfast because who doesn’t like all day breakfast???
A solid breakfast place!. A nice diner feel joint with a good menu selection. The staff are friendly and the food is tasty. My wife ordered the "Little Carolina pulled pork & pancake" and I got the "Farmers Scramble". The service is quick and served nice and hot. It's very laid back inside and not super squished and stuffy like some other breakfast places. Overall, it was enjoyable.
Love this place so much! I'm telling you, you have to try the fried chicken and the Mac and cheese! So good I can't get enough of it! Deacons i love u
Great Diner. As with all my reviews, I simply boil it down to whether I would come back or not.
In the case of Deacon's Corner? I would most definitely come back!
Great room, on point with the best diner offerings and good value.
Great Lunch Fun Diner!!. I tried Deacon's Corner today for the first time and was very pleased with the friendly, prompt service, food choices and prices. The food arrived very quickly, and the place was full! And the food was YUMMY!
Great energy in this attractive diner. Loved the decor and old pictures of Vancouver. A bit out of the way, but well worth the effort. I'll be back!
Standard. Best breakfast spot in Gastown. Friendly staff, big portions, proper breakfast fare -- grits, baked beans, waffles, etc. The coffee, casears and pie are on point too. I'm there at least once a week.
Hangover Food. I like to come here with a brutal hangover, stuff my face full of greasy, delicious food and then go pass out again with a food coma. It's cheap, you get A LOT, it's good and it's in the neighbourhood. What more do you people want??
Worth it. Everytime I am at Deacons I can hear my soul screaming ..Thank you . It is amazing to see how tirelessly their chefs in the kitchen cope with the onslaught of hungry diners who except nothing less than an great meal true to their reputation of being one of the great greasy spoon in Vancouver. Line ups seem to be a regular thing here and why would anyone mind if got even more famished staring at others eating their heart out.
Today we ordered southern chicken with fries and our regular order of pulled pork with pancakes. Again I don't know how they do it but Hey! Deacons another perfect landing. Least we forget the server Jade .. You are awesome. Great service !!
Well oiled machine. They don't waste time here. The food is pretty simple and well priced. We came for breakfast. I had the mushroom swiss scramble with rye toast and hashbrowns while my friend had the french toast with sausage. My scramble was great with lots of cheese and the rye was also quite nice. The hashbrowns were a serious let down though as they had some odd mexican flavouring to them. At least the bottom was crispy. My friend's generously portioned french toast was pretty awesome looking and tasting. The sausage was garden variety frozen spicy sausage patty. The coffee was good, as was the service. I'd go back, especially at that price.
Standard breakfast food in a great atmosphere! Not the best food, but unique location and great atmosphere push this place into my "Likes"
Great food in a surprising place. Hesitated first to open the door but to my surprise the place was bustling with a very hipster looking crowd so had to give it a try. I am a food junkie always looking for new places so didn't mind waiting for a table. ... must say they have their act together. Pulled pork was really great... the best I ate in a long time. Pancakes to die for.... A bit disappointed that they don't have shakes & pies. Free flowing coffee was good not the real bitter types I have had at other diners.
I live in Squamish, but every time I go to the City, I make a point of going to Deacon's corner. best breakfast in vancouver. I love the home fries. friendly service and good prices. I love this place.
Great Food, Great Value. Attentive staff, clean inside. Food can take a while to come out when it's busy. I've waited 20 minutes at the most, but it's worth it. Lots of house made products like: chorizo sausage, country gravy, biscuits, burger patties, & sausage patties. The fish in the fish & chips is too small, but the house made tartar sauce is great. Sausage & egger sandwich is the go-to dish. When it comes to breakfast, I trust Deacon's.
Best beakfast in the city!. I went and tried the sunshine diner, needless to say im sorry tyson i will never ever do that again. Deacons is the best breakfast in the city. The best bang for your buck. And home made sausage and biscuits! Amnazing. HOuse made everything Even better. See you soon!
Great, Simple, No Bulls**t Breakfest & Lunch. Just as the title says! Thumbs up.
Brunch. After a bike ride today around False Creek we headed to Deacon's Corner for the first time. What a great place for breakfast/brunch! Great and different options and fantastic white gravy and biscuts... just like Texas!
I've only had breakfast here so far and every time ive been the food has been great! Friendly and fast service too! It can get busy so be prepared for a little wait.
Got to get the BELCH. Tasty . And I love the hashbrowns. Not too greasy and the seasoning soooo good. Great service. Great dive.
Best lil' Diner!!. This place is awesome!! Delicious breakfast, perfect for hangover sat/sun mornings.. but not too greasy and many healthy options on the menu! I go here every weekend! It is fantastic!
When you need a filling and somewhat healthy need for fried eggs, pancakes, potatoes , and toast this place hit's the spot. Good value, large portions, and friendly service. Now with a liqour licence brunch is complete with a bloody Mary or Caesar
Sausage and biscuits... amazing! home fries could use some work but still good. cheap beer and Caesars too.
All in all, good diner food with great portion size. Price isn’t the cheapest, but it’s definitely worth coming back/checking out! (C: check out their menu on their website!).
The chicken was well-cooked and scrumptious as was the gravy covered biscuits. I was very satisfied with the food, company, and conversation at Deacon's.
There Is Always Room
+4.5
Since we were downtown and I was hungry, we went back to Deacon's Corner for some brunch. We had gone with Wendy, Gabs and Rocket a couple of weeks ago but I forgot my camera. A good excuse to go back. It was about 1:30 so the breakfast rush had finished
...The Breakfast Special included two eggs, hashbrowns, toast, and homemade sausage featuring turkey, sage and apple. The sausages were excellent – not greasy, and with a nice slightly chunky texture. I felt my eggs were a bit under-done, but still okay, and while I felt the hashbrowns were good in the corned beef hash, the paprika was a bit strong on the “plain” version served here. I also only got 3 half pieces of toast – what’s with that?!
I asked a question on Twitter a couple weeks ago on everyone's favorite breakfast spot in Vancouver. A number of our followers answered Deacon's Corner in Gastown, it was one of the restaurants I have yet to try.
The sandwich was gooey with cheese and the beans were absolutely delicious. Both breakfasts came with shredded hashbrowns that were cooked crispy all the way through like they should be (not like those places that make them crispy on the outside and cold
Deacon's Corner has been on my list since September, but I just never ended up going for so many reasons. Can't wake up early enough on the weekend to go for breakfast, can't go during school time, lazy and didn't wan to drag some friends there, etc. So w
Deacon's Corner, a new old school diner, is aiming to bring a little bit of personality to the far edges of Gastown. They serve classic diner style breakfasts at reasonable prices to an up and coming, but still sketchy part of
Deacon's Corner is a diner in Gastown by Alibi Room. I had ventured here once before only to find the place way too packed and I was way too hungry to wait. After watching many diners drive ins and dives, I was itching to go to a diner and glad I had a ch
Everyone knows that I love adventures. If said adventure involves having lunch with a close and dear friend of mine, it's even more exciting. These days, I have to get as much face time with Nancy Zimmerman as I can as she is soon moving to the North West
