It’s pretty rare to find Burmese restaurants. We decided to check out Amay’s House, which also dabbles in Malaysian and Thai cuisine. They’re located next to Kawa Sushi. We dropped in on an early Saturday evening (around 6:15pm). A couple people strolled in but it was dead for a weekend. The inside is drab; not much going on decor wise. Service was passable as our tea pot was refilled but the food comes out slow. At least you know the food is being made fresh.

Fannypack is such a good dinner partner because she is mostly up for anything.  When I said I wanted to try out Amay’s House, a burmese restaurant, she immediately says “Ok let’s go!”. We tried a bunch of staples.  First we both really wanted Amay’s House’s version of Myanmar Tea Leaf Salad “Laphet Thoke” ($8).  Last time I had it was as Bo Laksa King.   This version had the usual suspects of fermented tea leaves, tomato, cabbage, assorted beans and nuts.

I’m always up for trying new cuisines so when I found out that there was Burmese food available to me via Amay’s house, I just had to go! What I found out upon looking at the menu at Amay’s house is that Burmese food resembles Thai and Malaysian food but made with different spices so it wasn’t actually so scary to try out.

• located along Victoria drive
• street parking, suggest to park along the side streets
• hidden gem!
• food items are absolutely scrumptious!
• I had the Laksa, wow it was awesome! I felt like tasting laksa mixed with tom yum flavours. It is amazing! Comes in a big bowl (you can share this)
• veggie spring rolls & samosas to start are great - fresh, crunchy wrappers hmmm!
• Lamb curry was not overpowered with spices, simply good
• the dessert: puff with chocolate drizzle puts a period to a happy tummy
• fast, efficient service
• place is ok, not as posh as other restos but this is a family owned & operated business. They focus more on the authenticity of food quality
• I'll come back for more
• Yummm-my!

What a great place! Exc service food prices. And they even gave me a comp dessert. Lovely place. I had the stuffed lamb paratha. The BEST I've ever had anywhere!!! I also ordered the tea salad. It was interesting to try but the sour flavours we're too strong for me. Come here for a great meal.

I had high expectation on this restaurant as the rating was quite high. My boyfriend and I came here for dinner. It was not too hard to find street parking in this neighbourhood. We parked at the residential area and walked for a block to get to the restaurant.

When we first stepped into the restaurant, we felt very hot. Today was very hot already but this restaurant did not have air conditioning! We were melting! We got to this restaurant anyways, so we didn't want to leave and look for another restaurant.

There was only one server (probably the owner) to take care of all the customers. We got a table and menus from him immediately but we had been waiting for a long time before we ordered our food. The server was busy taking care of other customers.

Finally we ordered their popular tea leaf salad and laksa. The laksa was not as well as the one I tried at a Malaysian or Singaporean restaurant. The tea leaf salad was very authentic. It was very unique and different from the western salads.

The server was too busy to take care of other customers. The customer service was not great and the hot weather without air conditioning made us feel uncomfortable. We did not enjoy the dinner at the restaurant overall. We are not sure if we will come back in the near future but we highly recommend people to come here in winter time but not in summer!

Wow. We got hooked on Tea Salad twenty years ago at a short lived Burmese restaurant in Calgary. We've sought it out ever since. Tonight our memories were proven correct at Amay's. The incredible layering of flavours of laphet thoke make it one of the culinary wonders of the world.

The other food our friendly server helped us choose was fantastic. Samosas, fish noodle soup and a chicken biryani made for a delightful and filling meal for two. The restaurant is small and unlicenced. I thought at the time that a nice asian beer would accompany this food very well. If that is important to you they also do takeout.

Thanks again to the good people at Amay's! Next time we're in town, you'll find us here again.

Yea, we finally made it over to Victoria Drive and Amay's House - a visit to this restaurant had been high on my "wish-to-do" list for a long while.  After spending the better part of an hour walking, browsing, and generally taking in all the sights and sounds of several blocks in this area of Victoria Drive, we headed to Amay's for lunch.  When greeted at the door, as it opened at 11am, we were sure ready for what we thought would be a new and tasty food adventure for us.  We were sure not disappointed.

After settling into a table near the window, we (threesome) were brought hot tea (a pot and cups), and menus.   With help from some tips received from researching reviews here, followed up with some much-appreciated assistance from our server, here's what we ordered:  (note:  descriptions of the dishes are as listed in the restaurant's menu.)

--  Prata - crispy, and we ordered it with the potato curry and salad side dishes.  The prata was hot and crispy, the potato curry warm and tasty, and the salad, spicy, tart, and cool.  Yum! nice contrasting colours, tastes, and flavours, that sure went well together.

--  Myanmar Tea Leaf Salad (Laphet Thoke) - fermented tea leaves, tomato, cabbage, assorted beans and nuts.  I had really been looking forward to trying this salad (a 'signature' dish of theirs), and was well-rewarded with such bountiful flavours and different textures.  This salad was truly a tasteful delight.  We were sure impressed, and could not stop talking about the wonderful flavours!

--  Burmese Style Biryani (Danbauk) - marinated roasted chicken, basmati rice, seasoned with saffron, cloves, cinnamon, bay leaves, and traditional spices.  The chicken (a large leg + attached back) was 'melt-in-your-mouth' tender, juicy, and it, and the sauce nicely spiced, the 'bed' of rice, colourful, and so flavourful.  The spicing, though certainly apparent, was, at the same time, still rather subtle, and for us, just perfect.

--  Basil Eggplant - stir fry eggplant, chili belchan, dried shrimp, basil leaves, house made sweet soy chili sauce, served with steamed rice.  The ladies like and appreciate eggplant more than I do, so this was really their dish, and they sure enjoyed it.  From what I saw and tried, it was lovely to look at, and very tasty - the veggies perfectly cooked, the sauce sweet and so flavourful.  Except for a sprinkle or two of sauce, nothing was left on the plate to go back to the kitchen, or home with us.

--  Char Kway Teow - stir fry flat rice noodle, mixed soy sauce, chili belchan, bean sprouts, prawn, egg, Chinese sausage, topped with Chinese chive.  A cooked to perfection, and tasty noodle dish, a big hit with me.  Again, the spicing was distinct and apparent, but still quite subtle, providing a wonderful, lingering aftertaste in one's mouth with each taste.  Yum!

The food we tried was so well-prepared (flavourful, tasty, and very nicely and distinctly spiced), and presented.  The staff friendly, and service helpful.   Amay's House provided a most-delightful and fun dining experience to our recent Victoria Drive adventure.  Looking forward to our next visit!

Always saw this place while driving by but never went in until recently. The people are super friendly and asked us multiple times if we were doing okay and if the food was good. The soup noodles are thicker and creamier than others but it was delicious :) I ordered the coconut curry one. I also love their pata with yellow pea! Prices were very reasonable and I think overall it's a nice comfy place to go and have dinner.

THE BEST. Amay's House is a super authentic, Mom and Pop owned place in an unlikely neighbourhood. Amay's House has brought new life to the area of Victoria Drive and East Van.

The food is unlike anything you've ever had. Burmese cuisine is kind of like Indian meets Thai - but then again, not at all. After having spent time in Myanmar, I've found that this restaurant is exactly what I've tasted. My parents are both Burmese, and I can assure you, this is the food I grew up on.

Go to Amay's House for super friendly staff and the best South Asian food experience you've easily ever had.

If you're looking for something different, we definitely recommend this little Burmese restaurant! There are only a few Burmese spots in the city, however Amay's also has Thai and Malaysian dishes on their menu as well.

Mohinga (fish soup) is a must order, you will not regret it! So delicious, especially on a cold day. We also highly recommend the Burmese style biryani if you want to eat a rice dish. We were surprised how big the chicken in the biryani was considering the price (less than $10), and it was really juicy. We also ordered the prata with the potato curry, very delicious.

Service was good and the prices are quite cheap for the portion size. We will be back!

Victoria Drive has had many different types of cuisines move into the neighbourhood over the past few years. With relatively recent additions, such as Banh Mi Saigon Ltd. and Hapag, it can be quite a challenge to choose where to eat at! The subject of today’s visit is Amay’s House, a Burmese restaurant located next door to Kawa Sushi. This little joint has been on my radar for a little while now and have been edging to try it out!

I was told to try this place. My girlfriend's uncle is Burmese and said the food here tastes like Burma. I was greeted by Lisa, very nice lady. She recommended the tea leaf salad and "mohinga" the fish noodle broth. And that's where the magic came...

The different spices and seasonings on the tea leaf salad are out of this world wow... We also ordered the tomato salad and that was very very refreshing. The biryani is delicious. The coconut noodle broth delicious. The laksa nicely done. But the star dish "mohinga" takes the win... Holy s#+(. You seriously have to order this! This is now my favorite item there. Service is excellent. Don't forget when you pay that there is a candy jar at the till. Get the coffee candy "koppa"

When a Burmese origin person says the food at Amay's House is as good, if not better, than her grandmother's cooking, one has to stop, listen and try. So a feast of a lovely group of people invaded Amay's House and the claim was proven. . Excellent food, exceptional service, generous owners and amazing prices. Enjoy the photo tour - you won't go wrong trying any or all of the below.

Delicious and authentic flavors! This was just a random find that me and my bf went to one night. It was cozy and clean inside and the menu had some good selection. It was a mom and pop kind of restaurant and the owner was very polite and kind. The food was delicious, my only negative was that the portions were quite small, and the prices for some dishes didn't seem right when comparing it to the size of the portion. Other than that it was delicious and would probably go back to try other things.

I've never tried Burmese food before so I couldn't really relate. This place was cozy and gave me home cooked meal atmosphere. The food was tasty but for the portion I found it quite pricey. The staff was very friendly and the menu had a lot of selection. I tried the fish noodle soup the server recommended. It's known as a popular authentic noodle soup. The catfish broth was very flavorful. The beef rendang could have had more coconut flavoring and a better sized portion. I would like to re visit and try other items on the menu

Living in Victoria I don't get to come here often. My last visit with my Dad solidified my opinion that Amay's is absolutely a gem.

If you have never had Burmese food, abandon your expectations. Erase all thoughts of Thai, Laotian, Vietnamese or even Malaysian food out of your mind. Burmese shares commonalities with some of these cuisines, but it is very much its own thing and stands apart from the others. I call it a crossroads cuisine, blending local flavours and food traditions with flavours from both South China and India.

My Dad was a bit leery going here. He's often leery of new places and, as we arrived quite early, the house was empty aside from one Burmese couple and two Chinese gentlemen. We ordered the prata with steamed yellow peas, both the Myanmar tea leaf salad and the pickled mango salad, the laska (a soup) and the chicken curry (saving half of the rice and chicken curry for my step-mom). He was won over instantly. The flavours are unique and stumped his expectations. You can get familiar dishes here as well, like Pad Thai or Nasi Goreng.

If you go, try the tea leaf salad. I'm not a salad guy (I blame my Dad for my aversion) , but that is a salad I can never get enough of. Incredible flavours and line nothing you have had before.

I don't get the negative reviews of Amay's. Some of the negative reviews are ill thought out, have nothing to with anything - just self-important posturing. Other complainers must have eaten somewhere else and got the name wrong. Amay's prepares tasty, fresh food served by pleasant people.

Amay’s House Burmese Vancouver is a hidden gem. Vibrant and rich flavors of Myanmarese and Burmese food on 5076 Victoria Drive – next to Chau Veggie Express. The modest restaurant is modest, busy, and ridiculously delicious. The neon green walls hangs a portrait of Myanmar’s First Lady of Freedom, Aung San Suu Kyi on the wall.

went here with a couple of friend and was curious on how does burmese food tastes like. and hmmm the place was packe for a small restaurant on sunday night. lukily when i went in there's already a tanle for us, and then after looking at the menu we decided to go with the tea leaves salad, royal noodle, mee goreng, and pork belly curry with burmese briyani.

so first comes the tea leaf salad, with not really sure what's it's going to taste like, the salad is definitely a hate or love type of salad i guess it's because the fermented tea leafs remind me somewhat like a zing of a truffle. and the rest of the salad are salad more bland type of taste.

then the rest of the food reminds me of your average local singaporean good food stalls that sells mee goreng and laksa type, definitely good everything hit the right taste, the mee goreng does taste like a good singaporean mee goreng.

the pork belly curry and briyani, i love the taste of pork belly curry, the curry is the savoury type not the sweet one which is good. the pork is tender and the sauce is quite good too.

overall i would say it's a good restaurant definitely reminds me more of a singaporean restaurant. the price is okay. i don't think i would go back as i'm not a big fan of southeast asian food. but definitely a decent southeast asian food and can favorites locally

The inside of the prate was somewhat doughy but I still liked it because it soaked up the curry chicken really well. The curry chicken sauce was well flavoured and different from your typical Indian curry. It was extremely flavourful and had a good balance of spices and sweetness. Fish Noodle Soup – Mohinga (Rice noodles, catfish broth, lemongrass, fresh cilantro, fried garlic, fried split chana dal)

Went here yesterday with my wife and 2 friends.

We ordered 2 plain prata, a tea leaf salad, laksa, burmese style biryani, pork belly curry, and pad thai to share.

Was quite filling, and very tasty. didn't know what to expect for the salad strong flavours and crunchy textures from the beans, was very nice, though my friends and wife enjoyed it more than I did.

I enjoyed the laksa the most, very different from the laksa I've had at other places, such as banana leaf and penang delight, and other less noteworthy places. The laksa was very sweet tasting. The heat from the chili oil? was only relatively strong, and wasn't lasting. Combined with the raw bean sprouts and cilantro seemed to cut the heat (at least it did for me, not for my wife and friends) and made the laksa addictively appetizing. My favorite dish of the night.

The pork belly was cooked very tender, wasn't overly fat for me, went well with the prata we ordered. prata was very crisp and we found it find to be eaten without spreads. My friends I believe ate the prata with the pork belly curry and tea leaf salad. The flavor of the curry was average.

The pad thai seemed a bit above average but nothing amazing.

The Burmese style biryani was very flavorful, the chicken leg was very tender and curry sauce was nice and flavorful, didn't find it spicy but wife did.

for it's price it's very good food, and satisfying

Amay's is cheap and excellent!. Amay's is one of only a couple Burmese restaurants in Vancouver. The food is really good and quite authentic though with a few differences to some dishes to accommodate western tastes (speaking from experience since I was recently in Myanmar). The prices are very reasonable and food comes out quick. Would definitely recommend for an Asian food experience different than the typical Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, etc.

My introduction to Burmese food was in Saskatoon, SK at the Golden Pagoda. Loved it and I really missed it when I moved to Victoria. So I was very happy to discover Amay's on Victoria Dr. in Vancouver. I was even happier to discover the owner of Amay's is the brother of the owner in Saskatoon.

The family definitely has a penchant for food. I ordered out for a pre-Thanksgiving get together with old friends. There were no survivors. Three different kinds of prata (like naan), 2 orders of Burmese style Biryani, pickled mango salad and (of course) the iconic Myanmar tea leaf salad. All of it good, none of it survived the evening. The staff were very friendly and it feels like a real family affair. The prices are extremely good, a real value for the quality of food. While I took my orders out, I was impressed by the cleanliness.

Burmese food is a crossroads cuisine of a variety of local traditions with some cross overs with other South East Asian cuisines, but with strong influences from China and India. It's very unique and stands apart from Thai and Vietnamese. The do have dishes like Pad Thai and Nasi Goreng.

Go, eat at Amay's as soon as possible.

Great little joint for SE Asian food. Growing up (partly) in Singapore, I was very curious what our Burmese neighbors ate, so we tried out Amay's and while some things were similar. The food was definitely different then Singaporean/Malaysian food AND it was tasty!

1) Roti w lamb curry - 7/10 - it wasn't as flaky as I like but loved the fried onions and lamb inside the roti. Good starter.

2) Chicken Biryani - 7/10- good again, not what I am used to where Malaysian Biryani usually has the meat cooked with the rice, but the chicken was tasty and so was the rice.

3) Coconut Milk noodle soup- 7/10 - another good dish. Not Laksa, so don't expect that; however, tasty bits of chicken w noodles in a coconut curry.

4) Cendol- drink- didn't like this. I usually have it with shaved ice and this was just cubes. Can do without.

Overall, for the price, this an am amazing hole in the wall. Will recommend it to people. Only thing... with them winning the silver award, they were quite busy. We spoke to owner's son and he was apologizing. They weren't prepared for the sudden rush of diners, but are in the process of hiring help to handle the influx of foodies hunting for a new culinary treat!

We went there with group of 10 adults and 4 kids and didn't know what to expect, however the menu provide lists of foods that can cater everybody, shrimp friedrice is very light in spices , simple but tasty successfully feed 4 toddlers ( of course these kids doesn't have sea food allergy ). Meanwhile the adults went for Burmese basil friedrice and south East Asian lamb curry style. The ensemble of spices built a strong character to the dish yet didn't over power the lamb meat flavour, but I choose mutton curry. Think the meat was more tasty.. However they serve too much bones , my dish we're served late but the service recovery was excellent. For desert I went for 'cendol' this is not Burmese indigenous , you can find it in Indonesia or maybe Malaysia but they serve it differently it was delicious , fresh and creamy drinks, try it your self :)

Authentic and Unique Flavours. My first encounter with Burmese Food was in Asia, many decades ago. It lent a different meaning to the many flavours of Asia. The cuisine is influenced by the cuisines of Thailand, India and China and has its own unique flavour. The curries are not heavily laden with cream and yoghurt, the spices are a mix of Indian spices and fresh herbs and the food not soaked in coconut cream like the many cuisines of South East Asia. Add a staple side of lime essence and chili powder and you get a wonderful tingling in your mouth. Refreshing, light yet exuding with bold full bodied flavours.

The most memorable dish was Nan Gyi Thoke (pronounced Thouk). When my Burmese friends started posting their photos of Burmese Food on Facebook, this created an insatiable craving for my Nan Gyi Thouk... when opportunity arose to fly back to Asia after 2 decades of absence, the first thing in my mind was Burmese Food... and so I did indulge...

I learned from my friends that the secret for a perfect Nan Gyi Thouk is the chickpea flour. This noodle dish is made with curries, shallot oil, noodles, cilantro, chickpea flour and lime.

When my friends started posting pictures of Mohinga today, Burma's national dish of curried fish broth, noodles and sides like fried pea fritters... I immediately Googled to see if any Burmese restaurants opened in Vancouver.

I have been to Bo Laksa King once on Hastings and was disappointed that the Burmese owner only features a handful of Burmese dishes on the menu. Nan Gyi Thouk was not even featured.

I was amazed that Amay's menu is 95% Burmese, a few dishes are of Thai influence like the Special Basil Fried Rice.

For this trip, I invited a few non-Asian friends who were surprised by the magic of the cuisine of Burma. They loved it!

What we ordered:

Nan Gyi Thouk - the chicken curry was well cooked with flavour, the mixed result of lime, curry, shallot and chickpea flour was awesome and authentic. I added chili pepper on mine like I usually do and it just made my tongue sing a new refreshing tune.

Lahpet Thouk - I had this fermented tea leaf salad once at Bo Laksa King. The crunchy pea fritters are a surprising touch to the fermented tea leaves.

Mohinga - not fishy at all... that's the signature of a good fish broth, flavours of fish but not of smelly fish. The owner gave us more broth for our Mohinga. Sprinkle some chili and fish sauce to make it even better.

Prata and Chicken Keema Prata - the chicken is lightly season in the Keema. Top it with the lime infused salad of cucumbers, red onions and cilantro and you get a unique refreshing deep flavour in your mouth.

Biryani (Danbauk) - you can taste the caramelized onions, clove, cinnamon, saffron, raisins.... with a nice grilled chicken leg. Eat it with the curry for added burst of flavour.

Chicken Curry (Ohn Hta Min Kyet Thar) - Holy! very different from Indian, Thai or Singapore Curry. Goes good with white rice, fried rice or biryani!

Basic Fried Rice - similar to the Thai Basil Fried Rice (Khao Pad Krapow)

I am very picky with my food.

Food has to be cooked as authentically as possible, the owners and chefs must come from the country of the cuisine they are featuring, no shortcuts in cooking, no foreign chefs & sous-chefs pretending to cook a cuisine not their own, flavours must not be watered down to satisfy non-Asian tongues.

Amay's House Burmese and Asian food passes with flying colours. The decor and ambience may be lacking at this restaurant, but the flavours and authenticity are not.

Come enjoy the flavours of Burma (currently named Myanmar by the Ex-Military Junta) in Vancouver and experience the beauty of a cuisine not yet popularized like Thai or Vietnamese.

Don't miss out! Authentic and feels like home!. A warm, inviting and authentic family-operated Burmese restaurant serving the very best cuisine from Burma. Having recently come back from Burma, I was craving mohinga (noodle soup), Burmese curries, pratas and fried rice. Excellent Restaurant!. Great family runned restaurant. I have little exposure to the Burmese community as well as their culinary delights, so my expctations have not been shaped by any past experiences. I was delighted to taste some of the dishes they cooked up. The food was excellent and i love the blends of spices and will be looking forward to going back again and again. The price was very affordable and that doesn't hurt either. Will recommend this to my friends and family.

The Burmese community in Canada is dwarfed by Chinese, Vietnamese, etc. Thus, their cuisine is not well known. It is an interesting blend of Asian (noodles, rice) and Indian (spice).

Mohinga is a spicy fish broth with noodles. They also do the traditional coconut noodle curry.

Mohinga is going be be the next Pho.

Good eats, good prices and something different and new.

This is definitely a hidden gem on victoria drive! The soup noodles are amazing. My favorite is the coconut milk noodle soup for $5!! Where else can you get a hardy bowl of soup noodle for that price? For $9 you can get the combo with assorted vegetable tempura and a drink. If you are geting the myanmar mill tea, the hot version is better than the cold. The cold one is too watered down. This is a family owned restaurant and the food is delicious. I definitely recommend it :)

“Amay” sounds like a lady’s name, but it means “mother”, which the owner has used to dedicate to his mother. He started this restaurant with his wife in July 2013 in hopes to share his love for his country, culture, and Burmese cuisine to all foodies in Vancouver. Amay’s House is clearly one of the few authentic Burmese cuisines (As far as we know, there are only 3) that you can find in Greater Vancouver. Burmese cuisine has a very unique taste heavily influenced by various countries such as China, India, and Thailand. To foodie’s delight, their menu is as authentic to Burmese dishes as possible, consisting of dishes from different regions and local ethnic minorities. #gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 25%; } #gallery-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

Sundays are splurge days for my grandma and I LOL! We go feasting and my grandma always end up ordering wayy too much food for 2 people haha...and no, we don't end up finishing it and we usually pack most of it home which lasts us for the next 2 meals lol! I'm so bummed that in a few weeks she's going back to Taiwan for half of year...but she's coming back in March, so until then, no more sunday feasts *sadface*   Anyways, I've been wanting to try out Burmese food in a while! I've never had Burmese food before so for my first venture into Burmese cuisine, I decided to check out Amay's on Victoria Drive, which is one of the highest rated Burmese restaurants in Vancouver! There actually aren't that many Burmese restaurants here in Van, they're definitely underrepresented compared to other South Asian cuisines!   The service we received was...with lack of a better word, amazing lol! We were served by who I presumed to be the owners, and they were super friendly and accommodating the whole time! They even chatted with us, and the guy told us that he's actually Fujian (Chinese), but he grew up in Burma! He took out his wallet to show us his mom's chinese name that he had written on a piece of paper! He got along really well with my grandma and he said that she looked like his mom LOL! At the end of our meal he even gave us a free side of soup and took the samosas off of our bill!! My grandma gave them her seal of approval and told me to rate them 5 stars on my blog! lmaoo Burmese Style Biryani  3/5 stars   This plate was huge and it came with 2 large pieces of chicken! The rice was super fragrant and fluffy, the grains were separated and didn't stick together! The chicken was sweet-savoury and dosed with a ton of spices! The inside was moist and not dry at all!  Mohingo Fish Noodle Soup 3/5 stars   This was pretty good as well!
