It’s pretty rare to find Burmese restaurants. We decided to check out Amay’s House, which also dabbles in Malaysian and Thai cuisine. They’re located next to Kawa Sushi. We dropped in on an early Saturday evening (around 6:15pm). A couple people strolled in but it was dead for a weekend. The inside is drab; not much going on decor wise. Service was passable as our tea pot was refilled but the food comes out slow. At least you know the food is being made fresh.

Fannypack is such a good dinner partner because she is mostly up for anything.  When I said I wanted to try out Amay’s House, a burmese restaurant, she immediately says “Ok let’s go!”. We tried a bunch of staples.  First we both really wanted Amay’s House’s version of Myanmar Tea Leaf Salad “Laphet Thoke” ($8).  Last time I had it was as Bo Laksa King.   This version had the usual suspects of fermented tea leaves, tomato, cabbage, assorted beans and nuts.

I’m always up for trying new cuisines so when I found out that there was Burmese food available to me via Amay’s house, I just had to go! What I found out upon looking at the menu at Amay’s house is that Burmese food resembles Thai and Malaysian food but made with different spices so it wasn’t actually so scary to try out.

• located along Victoria drive
• street parking, suggest to park along the side streets
• hidden gem!
• food items are absolutely scrumptious!
• I had the Laksa, wow it was awesome! I felt like tasting laksa mixed with tom yum flavours. It is amazing! Comes in a big bowl (you can share this)
• veggie spring rolls & samosas to start are great - fresh, crunchy wrappers hmmm!
• Lamb curry was not overpowered with spices, simply good
• the dessert: puff with chocolate drizzle puts a period to a happy tummy
• fast, efficient service
• place is ok, not as posh as other restos but this is a family owned & operated business. They focus more on the authenticity of food quality
• I'll come back for more
• Yummm-my!

What a great place! Exc service food prices. And they even gave me a comp dessert. Lovely place. I had the stuffed lamb paratha. The BEST I've ever had anywhere!!! I also ordered the tea salad. It was interesting to try but the sour flavours we're too strong for me. Come here for a great meal.

I had high expectation on this restaurant as the rating was quite high. My boyfriend and I came here for dinner. It was not too hard to find street parking in this neighbourhood. We parked at the residential area and walked for a block to get to the restaurant.

When we first stepped into the restaurant, we felt very hot. Today was very hot already but this restaurant did not have air conditioning! We were melting! We got to this restaurant anyways, so we didn't want to leave and look for another restaurant.

There was only one server (probably the owner) to take care of all the customers. We got a table and menus from him immediately but we had been waiting for a long time before we ordered our food. The server was busy taking care of other customers.

Finally we ordered their popular tea leaf salad and laksa. The laksa was not as well as the one I tried at a Malaysian or Singaporean restaurant. The tea leaf salad was very authentic. It was very unique and different from the western salads.

The server was too busy to take care of other customers. The customer service was not great and the hot weather without air conditioning made us feel uncomfortable. We did not enjoy the dinner at the restaurant overall. We are not sure if we will come back in the near future but we highly recommend people to come here in winter time but not in summer!

Wow. We got hooked on Tea Salad twenty years ago at a short lived Burmese restaurant in Calgary. We've sought it out ever since. Tonight our memories were proven correct at Amay's. The incredible layering of flavours of laphet thoke make it one of the culinary wonders of the world.

The other food our friendly server helped us choose was fantastic. Samosas, fish noodle soup and a chicken biryani made for a delightful and filling meal for two. The restaurant is small and unlicenced. I thought at the time that a nice asian beer would accompany this food very well. If that is important to you they also do takeout.

Thanks again to the good people at Amay's! Next time we're in town, you'll find us here again.

Yea, we finally made it over to Victoria Drive and Amay's House - a visit to this restaurant had been high on my "wish-to-do" list for a long while.  After spending the better part of an hour walking, browsing, and generally taking in all the sights and sounds of several blocks in this area of Victoria Drive, we headed to Amay's for lunch.  When greeted at the door, as it opened at 11am, we were sure ready for what we thought would be a new and tasty food adventure for us.  We were sure not disappointed.

After settling into a table near the window, we (threesome) were brought hot tea (a pot and cups), and menus.   With help from some tips received from researching reviews here, followed up with some much-appreciated assistance from our server, here's what we ordered:  (note:  descriptions of the dishes are as listed in the restaurant's menu.)

--  Prata - crispy, and we ordered it with the potato curry and salad side dishes.  The prata was hot and crispy, the potato curry warm and tasty, and the salad, spicy, tart, and cool.  Yum! nice contrasting colours, tastes, and flavours, that sure went well together.

--  Myanmar Tea Leaf Salad (Laphet Thoke) - fermented tea leaves, tomato, cabbage, assorted beans and nuts.  I had really been looking forward to trying this salad (a 'signature' dish of theirs), and was well-rewarded with such bountiful flavours and different textures.  This salad was truly a tasteful delight.  We were sure impressed, and could not stop talking about the wonderful flavours!

--  Burmese Style Biryani (Danbauk) - marinated roasted chicken, basmati rice, seasoned with saffron, cloves, cinnamon, bay leaves, and traditional spices.  The chicken (a large leg + attached back) was 'melt-in-your-mouth' tender, juicy, and it, and the sauce nicely spiced, the 'bed' of rice, colourful, and so flavourful.  The spicing, though certainly apparent, was, at the same time, still rather subtle, and for us, just perfect.

--  Basil Eggplant - stir fry eggplant, chili belchan, dried shrimp, basil leaves, house made sweet soy chili sauce, served with steamed rice.  The ladies like and appreciate eggplant more than I do, so this was really their dish, and they sure enjoyed it.  From what I saw and tried, it was lovely to look at, and very tasty - the veggies perfectly cooked, the sauce sweet and so flavourful.  Except for a sprinkle or two of sauce, nothing was left on the plate to go back to the kitchen, or home with us.

--  Char Kway Teow - stir fry flat rice noodle, mixed soy sauce, chili belchan, bean sprouts, prawn, egg, Chinese sausage, topped with Chinese chive.  A cooked to perfection, and tasty noodle dish, a big hit with me.  Again, the spicing was distinct and apparent, but still quite subtle, providing a wonderful, lingering aftertaste in one's mouth with each taste.  Yum!

The food we tried was so well-prepared (flavourful, tasty, and very nicely and distinctly spiced), and presented.  The staff friendly, and service helpful.   Amay's House provided a most-delightful and fun dining experience to our recent Victoria Drive adventure.  Looking forward to our next visit!

Always saw this place while driving by but never went in until recently. The people are super friendly and asked us multiple times if we were doing okay and if the food was good. The soup noodles are thicker and creamier than others but it was delicious :) I ordered the coconut curry one. I also love their pata with yellow pea! Prices were very reasonable and I think overall it's a nice comfy place to go and have dinner.
