Nice relaxed diner after walking up and down the shopping strip of Kits. My poutine was a hearty portion and the gravy wasn't overly salty - just the right amount of taste. The pesto mac 'n cheese was small portioned but heavy. I liked that the owner(?) (he looked like the boss) came over to check on us. Added a personal touch to the dining experience.
A group of co-workers and I treat each other for lunch every Thursday and this is the place I like 9/10 times.
The food is really solid breakfast or lunch - I normally go for a Benny in the morning and always get the falafel burger at lunch. Their avocado and goat cheese sandwich is also a winner. Also, I'm a vegetarian but my friends swear by the chicken in this joint.
The only downside to the place is that during lunch they're usually understaffed and the food takes a while to come out of the kitchen but it's worth the wait!
I visited their Kits location today. The place was mostly empty when I arrived at around 1:00 pm on a Wednesday, and I was seated quickly. I ordered their Carolina Pulled Pork & Pancakes, Giant version, which came with pulled pork, three eggs, and two pancakes (their small version came with 2 eggs and 1 pancake). The food was fine (details below) - the standout for me was the pulled pork, and the portion was big enough to satisfy me (I have a MASSIVE appetite). The service was efficient and friendly, and I do like their relaxed and casual atmosphere. Overall, I had a pretty good experience at this diner, and I do hope to sample more from their menu in the future.
Carolina Pulled Pork Pancakes (Giant, $15):
3.5/5
This came with two pancakes, pulled pork, and three eggs, which I asked to have fried. I didn't really care much for the eggs - they were a bit rubbery and don't appear to be at all seasoned. I was initially a bit disappointed by the pancakes as they seemed to be quite flat and thin. Fortunately, they did taste better than they look, and did not have any off flavour or bitterness from baking soda. I did find the texture to be a bit too chewy for my liking however, bordering on rubbery. The pulled pork was definitely the standout for me: it was tender and juicy, and coated in a delicious sweet and slightly spicy bbq sauce. Unfortunately, there just wasn't enough of the pork present. Portion wise, the giant version was perfect for me - it satisfied my enormous appetite without leaving me in a complete food coma.
Don't believe the ratings . Having gone to their gas town location we decided to try this one out. Really great comfort food . Loved the Southern fried chicken . Service is great; burgers are good and filling :
Came in here HANGRY for lunch. The service was excellent and friendly. I had their Fried Chicken Grits. The chicken was Crispy on the outside and juice on the inside. The portioning was great too. I really liked the amount of gravy they put on the dish (I hate it when they drown it). The grits was so creamy and yummy. What a great place for comfort food on a rainy day!
We went for dinner with the four person Groupon voucher and was treated to an awesome experience with both great service and four awesome dishes. The food definitely did not live up to the other recent negative reviews, we tried four different burgers/sandwiches and not one complaint was heard between mouthfuls. Quite honestly my fat cow burger was the equal of any burger in Vancouver, the bun was a perfect brioche, the patty's tasty and the filings generous and fresh. We also tried the caramel apple pie for dessert which was taken straight from the oven just prior to our arrival and was a perfect match of flaky pastry, tender apple slices and delicious crumble. On top of this the service was friendly and efficient, will be back to try the breakfast!
A bright spot in our neighbourhood. We are glad that the old shack has been replaced by Deacons we have been there twice food is very good I must say fried chicken delicious and crispy wife tried Jambalaya equally great servers seem to need a little more training looked to be a bit new but were friendly.
Good food and service. All day breakfast place with an additional small lunch and dinner menu. I got a pulled pork sandwich and fries and salad which I really liked. I'm bringing a friend soon as the pancakes sound great.
Ever since Drunken Master and I heard that a second location of Deacon’s Corner was taking over the old location of The Shack on West Broadway, we’ve been waiting for an opportunity to get together to try it out. Finally an opportunity presented itself early one Saturday morning when I was looking for some hangover noms, and Drunken Master was just really, really hangry. You might be wondering why Drunken Master and I seem to never eat out together. We write a blog together, so it would certainly make sense if we did. The problem is that we’re both monsters. Normally when we eat out, the shaming we get from our friends is enough to reel our eating into the acceptable levels of food consumption. But when we go out to eat without the watchful eyes of our friends, the monsters are unleashed, and we consume abnormal amounts of food. Basically we’re obese people trapped in really, really, ridiculously good looking bodies. So off we went to get our food fix. The restaurant has been completely renovated from the all wood interior that used to make up The Shack, and now has a diner feel complete with red bar stools and those little metal boxes that hold napkins. There’s also a great wrap around patio that will definitely be popular once the warmer months hit. The restaurant was about half full when we arrived at 10 AM with a number of families with children of all ages. It struck me that other than White Spot and The Sunshine Diner down the road, there really aren’t many family friendly brunch establishments in the area, so this new location appears to have been well thought out. The downside to this was there were a number of crying babies throughout the meal. I don’t mind this at all, because I’m a stereotypical late twenties female whose ovaries are ticking away, but Drunken Master got crabby. ( DM Edit : Food Wench squeals at all babie
