This sandwich shop is so good, it's stressful. By this, I mean that there are is so much variety in what you can put in your sandwich that I get flustered! It's like Subway but ten times better and ten times more stressful haha! But this is good. Highly recommend for anyone who wants a harass sandwich.

This is a small Italian deli/grocery that's located on The Drive. While they sell a variety of different imported good, they are probably best known for their sandwiches. You pick your bread, fillings, and condiments, and they'll make your sandwich for you. I had a Small Bun with Proscuitto and a Half Focaccia with Mortadella. I wasn't a bit fan of the focaccia, which I found to be a bit dry and grainy, but I really enjoyed the bun. The prices are a bit on the expensive side, but they do come with a generous amount of fillings, so I think it's worth the price.

Small Bun with Prosciutto ($7.75):
4/5
I had the sandwich with pesto mayo, olive oil and balsamic vinegar, red peppers, edam cheese, red peppers and spinach. There was a large amount of proscuitto inside the sandwich, which was very salty and savoury. The bread was also quite thin and toasted and crispy.

Half Focaccia with Mortadella ($9.95):
3/5
I had the sandwich with chipotle mayo, red peppers, gouda cheese, red peppers and spinach. I asked for porchetta in my sandwich, but the lady was a little hard of hearing and gave me mortella instead. That was fine though, because the mortella was still quite tasty. Unfortunately, I wasn't a big fan of the bread, which was a little too grainy for my taste.

Summary:
Food: 4/5
Price: 3.5/5
Service: N/A
Overall: 3.5/5
Recommendations: Sandwiches

If you’re ever looking for some strange oils, vinegars or even just different Italian cookies this shop is bound to have it! The shelves were stocked with everything imaginable! I decided to drop in for some lunch. The sandwiches here are talked about quite a bit so what better to do than to pick up a sandwich and a coffee and enjoy my afternoon off! I arrived at around 12:30PM and thankfully there was no line up. There was quite a few people working there, stocking shelves, cutting deli meats and making food orders, they all seem to be really busy, but they don’t neglect their customers. I came in and took a look around taking pictures of all their interesting stuff! One of the ladies around the sandwich making area asked me what I would like and showed me their system of sandwich making. So first you choose your bread! Bread choices     If you want oil and vinegar in the sandwich, mayo or mustard (they have some really cool options like pesto mayo), then you choose your cheese, veggies and meat. They have freshly sliced cheeses and it always changes depending on what they have on hand, she told me that the selection today was swiss/emmentaler, provolone, smoked provolone and dill havarti. Cold cuts   Ultimately I got a half whole wheat focaccia with oil and vinegar, spinach, tomatoes, onions, artichokes, banana peppers and sliced turkey. This was all pressed in a panini press and served hot! During the wait for the panini, with some sneaky eavesdropping I had heard a customer ask for the Italian meatball sandwich and how it was absolutely amazing! Unfortunately they were sold out of the meatballs and you’d have to come early if you wanted some. This m

Best in the city. Now, this is not just a sandwich place, but to be honest that's all that I look at. One of my favorite places for sandwiches in vancouver, i cant pass by commercial drive and NOT enter here. Yeah, my addiction/loyalty or whatever you want to call it is THAT bad.

Love the paninis and foccacia are my tops on the list. You can choose everything on the menu so make sure you are not a nervous wreck when having to choose the type of cheese, meat, olives you want, lol. The only advise I have here is to keep a place in mind once you purchase your food - there is no seating here, the sandwiches are made to go.

Best sandwiches ever!!!. It's been a long time since I was "in the neighborhood" on Commercial Drive and Second Avenue; however I had the good luck of being there yesterday and I jumped on the chance to get some heavenly La Grotta Del Formaggio sandwiches - bringing them back to the North Shore about an hour trip on the bus from the deli. Any time I bring sandwiches from La Grotta home I am always the hero; and yesterday was no exception.

Although La Grotta Del Formaggio is a full Italian deli - not a "sandwich shop" per say - they do make the best sandwiches I've ever had. When I was in Venice Italy there was a deli that had a completely different kind of wonderful sandwich; but La Grotta still wins as "best sandwich in the world" in my books. I recommend the focaccia when it comes to the bread and I also recommend the +$1 meat selection; although everything is delicious. I love just letting the person making the sandwich (on this trip I was blessed with Sheba helping me) put everything on it which includes fresh lettuce, tomato and onion along with a large variety of wonderful picked Italian vegetables.

Now it's important to realize that when ordering a custom sandwich in any place - one of the most important things is to be ordering it from someone who knows what they're doing. Over the many, many years I've been buying sandwiches from "La Grotta" I've had many of their staff build these heavenly sandwiches, and the staff always do a good job; but the person who consistently goes above and beyond is Sheba (I really hope I'm spelling her name correctly). She's been working at La Grotta for many years and is (in my humble opinion) the best sandwich builder there. She really goes out of her way to build a sandwich that is a work of art. I don't know if she realizes it; but what she's really doing is creating a little happiness in the world. Many people have jobs (my own past jobs included) where at the end of the day you ask yourself if you made a positive difference in the world, did you make people happy or have no effect? Too many times we come home at the end of the day from work and feel like we didn't make any positive difference I hope Sheba realizes that at the end of the day, she spent her time making people happy and does make a positive difference in the world one customer at a time. That is no small thing in my opinion!

I don't want to be confused with being overly dramatic, but I see people every day in jobs where they really don't want to be there or don't care much about doing a stellar job - and it is the complete opposite case with Sheba. She remains very professional while at the same time being personable, taking the time to have a friendly chat with customers while remaining focused on doing a stellar job in the sandwich creation department. Prior to my current occupation I used to be in the staff recruitment industry and Sheba has that "X Factor" that every employer is looking for. Her boss is very lucky to have someone like her working for him. Credit where credit is due, as I've always said - and it's certainly well deserved here. Well done Sheba!

As far as the rest of the deli goes there is a beautiful selection of both cheeses and pickled treats, along with the pastas and other interesting things you might expect to find in an actual deli in Italy. They also have hand pressed mozzarella sitting chilled in water, and if you explore the deep recesses of the deli you're sure to find something cool and unexpected (in a good way). This place is so great, if you haven't been then you owe it to yourself to check it out.

Why can't more places follow the lead of La Grotta Del Formaggio with stellar staff, fantastic products, and reasonable prices. It's just before 5am as I write this and I'm heading to the fridge right now to munch on a left over "slice of heavenly sandwich".

Not for me. While I am a huge sandwich guy, I suppose western style sandwiches are more of my taste... Apologies in advance for the misspelling of all the Italian words lol; I went with a brown half Focaccia, for meat I went with a Rosemary Ham and a Sopprasata, I put lettuce, tomato, onions, peppers, and jalapeno havarti on it, good so far right? Now perhaps I screwed it up when I said ok put those weird pickled eggplant pieces on it, and perhaps I also screwed it up further by saying yes to the balsamic vinaigrette, honey dijon, and chipotle mayo... hey it sounded good! I mean the sandwich was ok, I know if I were to return i could do a bit better of a job lol. All in all though the place has an awesome Italian deli vibe to it (well I guess thats what it is lol) everything was super fresh and well priced too.

Love this place! Best sandwiches I've had in Vancouver. So many options - they load your sandwich with quality ingredients then grill it to ooey gooey perfection, without leaving a dent in your pocket. Actually, it really is cheaper than subway you should really try it.

Yum yum!. Went in at noon on Monday and ordered a 1/2 focaccia sammich. Wanted the Montreal Smoked Meat Mozzarella, but they were out of both of these items. Asked the server what she would recommend and she basically built my sammich for me - ended up with Roast Beef (+$1 extra) + Swiss + Roasted Red Peppers + Onion + Lettuce + Pesto Mayo + Dijon Mustard. YUM. Glad I went with her suggestions. Lots of meat, grilled focaccia was crispy and tender, all the flavors blended nicely together.

Best sandwich in town, great cheese. Seriously good sandwiches with an array of topping options. i love the roasted red pepper and artichoke hearts. i go in with a friend usually and we split a large focaccia, which is so tasty grilled. the selection of cheeses to buy is incredible, and they have big bags of yerba mate behind the counter. it can be busy, but the sandwich is worth the wait.

Why anyone would EVER have a Subway sandwich when they could have a sandwich from here (for about the same price!) is a mystery to me. The best non-banh-mi sandwich in town, I think. Lots of great deli supplies, too. There's only a couple of tiny tables outside so plan to eat somewhere else. The bakery next door is an excellent source of dessert.

Not just sandwiches. Seems like most people think of this joint at the hear of The Drive as a sandwich place, but they've got a good selection of Italian deli meats that satisfy my wife, who's hard to please when it comes to Italian cold cuts. Decent mortadella, nice hot cappaciola, lots of salami choices, and of course those cheeses that give the place its name. I like the choice of Italian grocery items, too.

I hope it stays open until I die.. I used to work here, and while I don't agree with everything that happens behind the scenes at La Grotta, I have to admit that I'm still coming back for the deli sandwiches and fancy cheeses years after I quit. The best cheese selection in the area and the tastiest sandwiches I've ever tried. I find myself craving them on a regular basis (watch out, they can be a bit salty). You can choose between a small, medium or large bun, or a whole or half focaccia. A whole focaccia with meat will cost you a very reasonable $11 or so and will probably last you for two full meals. (These sandwiches taste even BETTER after a night in the fridge.) Choose from any or all toppings: dijon mustard, regular mustard, mayo, pesto mayo, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, roasted red peppers, artichoke hearts, pickled eggplant, fresh tomatoes, sliced red onions, green olives, fresh lettuce, spicy banana peppers, salt and pepper. You also get a choice of cheese, and meat-eaters may choose any meat they desire from the deli case. Then you can get it toasted on the grill if you choose, and not to worry, the old grills have long been replaced with automatic ones that open before your sandwich has a chance to burn. If you're really feeling crazy, for an extra 50 cents you can add things like black olive tapenade, bocconcini or hummus to your sandwich. Meats like prosciutto, natural turkey and roast beef cost an extra $1 which is totally worth it in my opinion, for real meat. I'm just telling you all this because I know.

This is a family owned and run business and the always good-humored boss is often found at the cash register where he'll be more than happy to discuss cheese or anything else with you. Not only a sandwich place, they also sell fresh free-range eggs, olives, espresso machines, stovetop units and their replacement rubber rings, and a wide array of pastas as well as lots of other imported Italian foods.

Last time I visited Donald's Market in the Quay, I totally missed this gem of a sandwich shop because I was too preoccupied with looking at the goodies in Donald's Market LOL!! They don't really advertise the fact that they have paninis, except for the tiny sign below their name! If it wasn't for yelp lol, I wouldn't have ever discovered this place! Apparently La Grotta Del Formaggio has another location in Vancouver which is super popular!    The lady working there was super nice and accommodating! Since it was my first time there she explained to me that I could build my own panini by choosing all the ingredients. After I had ordered, she told me that it would be a 10 min wait, so I went around the store exploring. When she was done, she even came to find me to give me my sandwich, which I thought was really nice of her! :) Build your own panini $5 for 1/4 Proscuitto, provolone, sun dried tomatoes, smoked turkey, ham, with pesto mayo 4/5 stars   This combination of flavours worked beautifully!! I really wished I had ordered the 1/2 size, cause after I had finished it, I wanted more! The proscuitto was yummy and well seasoned! The turkey and ham pieces were tender, and moist. The sun dried tomatoes added an extra dimension of tanginess. The addition of pesto mayo went really well with the other flavours! The bread was nicely toasted and not too thick. I also got a drink to go with my lunch! Aloe Gloe is the real deal: they use real, organic aloe! Unlike most of the aloe drinks you find at asian supermarkets LOL which use artificial aloe!!  And I got some treats from Donald's Market for snacking later heheh... A chocolate maple truffle bar, and some key lime gluten free cookies! :D My view during lunch..I love you New Westminster!!

Come here for cheap, fresh, hearty, made-to-order monstrous sized sandwiches as well as other Italian deli pick-me-ups and other goodies (raincoast crackers, anybody?) Also a great place for those who like to "choose your own adventure" (and by adventure, I mean the sandwich-ingredient-selection process analogous to the kind of adventure one was out to seek in the "Choose Your Own Adventure" books from way back. Anybody remember that? Lol!)

You can't have a sandwich roundup without La Grotta. So here is a late post about a summer sandwich. Enjoy the pictures of sunshine! I lived on Commercial Drive for over 10 years so La Grotta was a regular haunt for me. Since moving out to NOBU, it has become more of a treat.
