Review Buckstop - Vancouver

Angela Jeffery
I had a coupon and BBQ is always a good choice for dinner so we tried it. We ordered the Family Style Half Stop Barbecue. It was a nice variety of meats. The two ribs were solid, like smoked jerky. Not chewy but a tiny bit dry. They were better with some extra sauce. The smoked chicken was enjoyable but not rave worthy. My friend's first comment was that his is better. Therefore I challenged him to make me some so I can compare for myself. :) The beans and pulled pork were good enough I'd get them again. The cornbread was half way to cake. It was good with beans, and with the cinnamon spread that came with the hush puppies. I'd never had hush puppies before and could easily eat a basket of those for dessert.

This place has been a favourite since I discovered them in 2014. The ambience is dark but cozy and feels homey. The staff is always a pleasure and you can tell there's always a few regulars around with obvious love and a protective air for the place (**saw it first hand when a few stepped out to look into a possible issue when someone hit the window in passing) Interesting range of drinks , the red sangria is my favourite and their classic old fashioned really hit the spot too. Now for the main event : fooood! Their hush puppies and cornbread is probably the best I've had and I always leave with extras ;) The halfstop : 70$ , huge serving, took plenty home .2 beef ribs, 5 pork ribs, 2-3 smoked chicken, 3 smoked brisket, ramekin of pulled pork, Comes with fries, coleslaw, sauce and cornbread and hush puppies with cinnamon butter. We swapped the fries for beans (yummy) . The pork ribs last night were divine and the pulled pork was deliciously smokey . Everything else was good too, though I felt the beef ribs were a little dry but still tasty. They also have Monday burger specials which is nice . Another special mention is the fried dill pickles! Best way to get the appetite rolling . Slurp slurp ! All in all, I love this place and look forward to introducing new people to buckstop every chance I get !

If I could give a 0 star I would…. Just awful! I don’t usually give bad reviews but this place is incredibly bad! The sandwiches taste horrible and are the smallest portion i’ve ever seen, the smallest sandwich and only comes with one tiny and thin piece of meat! It comes with Costco tasting fries and with terrible coleslaw! And all of that for $17?!? Not worth it at all! The waitress was rude and honestly unprofessional….. This is the worst restaurant in deman street! Go down a block and you’ll get better food with better prices!

The food is awesome, has a kind of medieval ambiance. Would recommend the meat. Pulled pork, ribs, came with a donut type bread, hush puppies, was so good. Great place for meat eaters. Coleslaw excellent!!! Fries mmmmmm Definitely my destination when I’m craving ribs.

We had the poor excuse for a “smoked brisket sandwich” it was ONE piece of 5mm thickness for 17$!! It came with terrible burnt fries and old soggy coleslaw. It was the type of food people give out for free… server was rude too so mad she didn’t get a tip… how do you expect people to tip when you are robbing them?

Oh wow this wasnt good. Went to pick up some late night eats because the city is lacking in that department. But im not touching anything i ordered. Unappealing, lacking flavour and execution.

Exceptional food and service. Best BBQ in Vancouver. Highly recommend the ribs, brisket and hush puppies.

Best bbq ribs in town by a long shot! Everything on this menu is always great quality. First time trying the ribs and they fall off the bone, they are huge and lots of flavour! I want to eat it all over again, in-fact i think i will! Also got the smoked chicken and bbq beans which i also highly recommend!!!!

Stopped here after our flight landed and it was one of the few spots still open after we checked in after 11 on Sunday. The bartender warmed up to my wife and I and recommended a really good drink “the buckstops here” I believe. Good barbecue for a Canadian place, speaking from some Texas natives! Appreciated the hospitality for sure!

Knowing about good BBQ is important (we all know this) and there's a little place in the West End that is doing a half decent job of it. I saw them on season 5 of You Gotta Eat Here! and wanted to give them a try ever since!

We stopped in early on a Saturday evening before it got too busy and the place was completely empty so we had our pick at sitting wherever we wanted. The servers were very friendly and kind, more than willing to accommodate the fact that we switched tables about three times!

Once we were settled in, I noticed how tiny the restaurant is. It's a very cute little place and you can nestle yourself away in the dimly lit space so that no one else has to witness the food crimes that you're about to commit. The feeling is rustic and wilderness-like (wood, rust coloured walls, antlers all over the place), which is exactly what you want for your BBQ experience!

They have a lot of really fun and thematic mixed drinks and I definitely wanted one. I was tossed up between several different ones and our server assured me that the Brown Butter Bourbon Old Fashioned (Brown butter infused makers mark, sugar cube, angosturas, orange peel - $11.00) would be the most delicious. Maybe my beverage preferences are too immature, but this was far too much of an adult drink for my taste. It mostly just tasted like a splash of alcohol and wasn't very delicious at all. I'm not sure that the brown butter flavour was apparent enough either. I should have tried The Buckstop's Here instead, most likely. Or just the Saloon Caesar.

When it comes to the food menu, I noticed that some things seemed different about the selection compared to what I saw on the TV show. There was no Sheppard's Pie and most sadly of all, there was no Devil's Dream Melt, which is the thing that I was planning to order and wanted to eat the most. This forced us to re-think our food strategy entirely. I liked the sounds of the Buffalo Cauliflower a lot but there was no time for that. We decided to go all-in with the Half Stop Barbecue (Beef back ribs, pork back ribs, brisket, smoked chicken and pulled pork. Includes navy beans with smoked bacon, coleslaw & kennebec fries - $65.00) because this is really what makes the most sense in a BBQ restaurant. You've gotta try all of the things! The server cautioned us that it's really big (it's meant to serve 2-3 people) but we were confident that we're seasoned enough eaters to take on the challenge. The first part of our feast to arrive were the Hush Puppies & Corn Bread (Served with honey butter). These arrived fairly quickly and were served fresh and warm. The hush puppies were fried to a golden perfection with a nice bright inside. I liked these a lot but found that they were missing a little something-something. They could've been served with a nice aioli. The corn bread was good, not to cakey and not too crumbly. The honey butter was delicious, the honey flavour really stood out! I loved this butter spread on the corn bread a lot.

Not too long later the big show arrived! I always love when a heaping impressive pile of stuff shows up! We dug straight in and were excited to get the meat party started! We were delivered bottles of housemade ketchup and BBQ sauce and made good use of both. One of my favourite elements were the beef back ribs, which you don't often see on these types of platters. The meat on these massive Flintstone-esque bones was ultra tender, robust, flavourful and delicious. The preparation was great and the meat melted in my mouth. The pork back ribs were similar (but much smaller) and the meat also fell off the bone, however I found them a bit more dry. They required more BBQ sauce to help them out. Another item that I enjoyed quite a lot was the brisket. I liked the thin slabs of perfectly smoked meat, the flavour coming through quite beautifully. The smoked chicken was decent, I had a drumstick and the meat was very moist. As far as chicken goes, it was a bit more on the average side. The pulled pork was fine. I tend to find a pile of pulled pork just sitting there a bit weird and prefer it in a sandwich.

I found the beans a bit boring and lackluster, a little bit too "bare." The coleslaw was creamy and decent. And the kennebec fries were very good! Excellent, even! They were cooked perfectly and salted nicely. The housemade ketchup was wonderful with them.

Overall, this feast was a bit hit and miss. It wasn't the best BBQ that I've ever had but it wasn't the worst either. I did think that the quantities of everything served was very good and that the value was pretty decent. In the end, we ate everything except for some of the pulled pork and a couple of pork ribs! We took them home.

We asked to see the dessert menu and were told that there was no dessert. Alright then!
If I were to return to Buckstop I would likely just get the Buckstop BBQ Assortment where you pick three meats (beef ribs, smoked brisket, smoked chicken). Or maybe they'll make it possible for me to eat the Devil's Dream Melt, which would be very exciting.
Yes. We,re Eating Again.
I obsessed, some would say too much, over the name Buckstop. What did it mean? Where did it come from? Antlers are certainly in evidence here, in the logo and so on ,. so I get the deer thing, but venison is not on the menu and none of the ruminants dropped in for refreshments while we were there. Is it a masculine reference to what a Saloon might have been say 150 years ago? Shame on me for even suggesting such a thing and rest assured, there were mostly couples and even a toddler present! How about, 'the buck stops here' (there is such a drink on the menu)? Nope, that doesn't work. Now, I know what you're thinking...the name sounds cool and there is some cute potential word play. Just get past it and order something to eat!
My partner and I enjoyed sitting at the front window, watching the West End folks drift by and loved the restaurant soundtrack. We listened to Eels, Johnny Cash, The Charlatans (happily not a single Bob Seger song) and munched happily on Deep Fried Pickles! They were hot out of the fryer, crispy and tasty, with a slightly spicy Cajun dipping sauce. Very nice! Next came Corn Bread and Hush Puppies with sweet butter. Both were moist and sweet with a nice coarse cornmeal texture and I began to worry that I would not have room for the next offering! Then it arrived! Smoked chicken, beef ribs, a pulled pork sandwich, fries, coleslaw and beans. This was a Groupon thing so you won't find it exactly on the menu but they do have some nice platter and combination meals available. This is barbecue. It means long slow cooking over low heat with smoke. Do not confuse it with the food you cook on your grill at home! The chicken was, oh so smokey, a taste that stayed with me and on my fingers ( I am not complaining). Despite brining, we did hit the occasional dry spot on the exposed meat. The ribs (there are 4 moist, meaty ribs under the chicken, not so visible in my photo) had a bit of a spicy kick and were very good. The coleslaw was refreshing and vinegary and also one of the stars of a very good pulled pork sandwich. Again with excellent smoke. I am not enough of an expert to tell you what kind of wood they use, just that it is the right kind. I found that the kitchen is a little shy with salt (not normally a bad thing) and both the chicken and the ribs could have used a little hit to make the flavours stand up a bit more. The fries were tasty (and salted) and the beans were firm, cuminy and smokey. This is a small place, friendly staff, pleasantly noisy and for those seeking libations, there is an extensive listing of Bourbon et al. Make a reservation and try some decent barbeque!

This place has been closed due to a mice infestation. If you can't read the picture it says they have to clean all surface including utensils and throw out any contaminated food. I knew this place a grungy.. but this is bad.

Disappointing meal. Buckstop grabbed my attention from it's funky facade and stuck out between the other cuisine options on the street. Service was nice however my meal was too smokey for my taste! I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and it was very heavy and didn't leave me feeling too well. It may be the cultural difference over here re the smokey flavours compared to Australia however I do not care for the taste!

I recently heard about this place thanks to Zomato reviews. The menu seemed pretty good so I went with a friend on a Saturday night. The restaurant's vibe is pretty chill; it's fairly lit and there is social seating-so you may be sharing a table with other people if it's a busy night. If you're looking for a quite date night, maybe this isn't the right place.
We ordered the Half Stop Barbecue for the heck of it. MY GOD that was a lot of food. My favourite were the ribs. Compared to other BBQ houses in Vancouver, Backstop offers the best ribs I've had! They were juicy and tender ..I can still taste them! Their sides were delicious as well. The hushpuppies and slaw got my mouth watering. The chicken was seasoned pretty well! The brisket, though, may need some more work..
Unfortunately we were too stuffed to order the Mac n Cheese but I'm definitely going back to give that a try!
Reasonable price for the amount of food given.

{ My silk red sheets, you can find it on here & robe here. I bought mine for around $300 and I just found this on Amazon for $80. Not bad at all. Now I need to buy silk pillow cases so my blow dry will last longer }. { Was hungry, hungover one night, couldn't move my dead body and I needed a fat steak. Thanks to Hy's being a few blocks away, we got it delivered!! The best! Best believe I had the cheese bread too }

In my opinion this is a place for the meltwater who appreciates good barbecue. Plate sizes are generous and they do a good job of capturing good souther flavour in their dishes. The cocktails were carefully crafted and suited the menus well.

Now this place I liked the vibe of. Staff were super friendly and it was small and low lit.

Didn't have much to eat here just some pop corn shrimp and they were spicy but there was a decent amount of them! I had a bourbon cocktail and a shot made by the bar tender. I wish I hadn't been so tired and could have tried more drinks and a pulled pork sandwich.
Menu looked decent. I had a sip of my friends cocktail and I liked it!!!

I need to go here one time at the start of my night.

Buckstop is a classic BBQ and small plates saloon on Denman Street. I bought a Social Shopper deal for their classic American barbecue feast for two people, including fried dill pickles, pulled pork sandwich, smoked chicken leg, St. Louis pork ribs, navy beans, Kennebec fries, hush puppies, cornbread and honey butter. Pretty good deal for only $28.

The atmosphere is great especially grabbing a few cocktails or beer to go with your meal.
Every Day Is A Food Day
I had won a dinner for two at Buckstop from the 12 Days of Giveaway of Nomss so we headed to the cozy restaurant on Denman on a Friday night. The winning was a Social Shopper voucher for the American BBQ Feast for 2 valued at $59 for the price of $28. The restaurant is very narrow with a bar at the front. Seating is a bit tight but I loved the ambiance with the dim lighting. Service was alright even though we were using a Social Shopper.

Tried BBQ from Buckstop for the first time. The platter Half Stop Barbeque platter ($60) feeds 2–3 from what my server claimed, comes with beef back ribs, st.louis pork rib, brisket, smoked chicken and pulled pork with hush puppies, cornbread and honey butter. I honestly thought the meats were okay, nothing really stood out for me here. The service was kind of awkard as well.. I can't pinpoint why but my sever was socially awkward. Anyways, I wouldn't come out of my way to eat here.. maybe I went on a wrong night.

Went to Buckstop last week. Gotta say, Love this place! We had a half stop, which is a crazy selection of house smoked/BBQ'd meats. Brisket, chicken, pork and beef ribs. Corn bread n' beans too! Great spot for BBQ. Open late. Service was friendly and fast. And the Cocktail list was more than I expected from a small place like this. They make their own bitters! And tons of flavours! So impressed. Have to go back just to work my way through the cocktail list. Great experience all around. Thanks Buckstop!

For the longest time I have been contemplating between Buckstop on Denman street or Devil's Elbow Ale and Smoke House in Gastown, and decided to go with Buckstop because they have been on my list ever since the restaurant opened their doors. Buckstop is a small and cozy barbecue restaurant that focuses on locally sourced food and made from scratch ingredients, such as making their own ketchup! So after polishing off a medium size bag of chips at Whole Foods because my friend was running AN HOUR AND A HALF LATE, we finally entered the restaurant. To be fair though, she did suggest for me to order some appetizers first... but knowing myself I would have ordered everything and have her finish what was left LOL.

I can’t say enough great things about Buckstop! I went in with my boyfriend to celebrate his birthday and we were both very impressed with the food, service and ambience of this little blink-or-you’ll-miss-it BBQ saloon and whiskey bar.

We ordered the Half-Stop Barbecue platter which came with beef back ribs, St.Louis pork ribs, slow-cooked brisket, smoked chicken and pulled pork plus hush puppies, cornbread, coleslaw, navy beans and fries. A lot of food, but everything was delicious. We enjoyed it all with a bottle of Malbec, and some friendly conversation with the staff.

The brunch is always fab, and the music always great! Definitely our favourite local.
No Dessert Im Full
Expected better BBQ.... Came here for lunch and had the bbq pork shoulder scramble. The bbq pork was meh... bbq flavours very light, seasonings almost none existent...

This is my favorite bar in town. It's a great antidote to the corporate bar culture found in Vancouver. Delicious barbecue, great drink specials and really friendly staff.

Will revisit :). Loved the atmosphere of this restaurant! Thoroughly enjoyed the service and the tequila cocktail that were on special for $5 last night, as well as the American BBQ feast in which we pre-purchased from a socialshopper deal for $28. However, it would be pricey if we were to pay for the full value of the meal ( around $57 without the coupon) as the portions were not very big. We loved the pulled pork sandwich and the hushpuppies, but thought the ribs and chicken were too dry and can be improved.

A great time, great food, and really nice house red wine!. This is a really nice little place. My partner and I went for our anniversary on a Saturday night and we sat at the front near the window, I got a glass of the house red (Mason Jar Red, $6) which was actually really good, it went with the meat really nicely and he just got a beer like usual. The staff were super friendly and attentive, choosing a BBQ house for an anniversary wasn't my first idea, but I just wanted somewhere nicer than were we usually go (sushi or pub) and were I could have some nice red wine that went well with the food. We got the Half Stop, all the meat was juicy, not dry and not too greasy...very very tasty!! and for $55 there was soo much food, we had to take left overs home (which is rare for us). I also indulged in a little dessert, a chocolate mousse with a little reindeer cookie which was very good! Well worth it. I had a very nice evening, left with a full belly and a little tipsy!

Great food. Stepped up its game lately. Amazing food and service. Will be back soon!

Great Find. Rita and I stopped by for a late meal. My wife had the Prawn's N Watermelon, BBQ rubbed sauteed prawns, smoked jalapeño tequila infused watermelon, cucumber, red pepper, mint and lime. She also had homemade lime infused ginger ale. I had Tempura Tuna Taco, albacore tuna lion, housemade flower tortilla, chipotle ailoi, cabbage, pickled cucumber and a memorable cocktail. Way to go beautiful Fiona (who is the owner). Buy a round for the kitchen! Thanks to the chefs and our sweet waitress with the pretty face. Ask if Jackson is in!
Joanna Lee
Amazing gourmet eatery! Venison burger was amazing! They brew their own ginger ale! Also, Caesar comes with a slice of smoke cheese and bacon on a skewer. Stole some of bf's pulled pork and beans! Hush puppies are southern comfort! Butter is made of cinnamon and honey!

Consistently happy. My partner and I have really limited our eating out and really seldom do anymore. That being said, we've been coming to Buckstop since it opened and have had a chance to try pretty much everything on the menu.

I am confident that there is something on here for everyone!

We went this evening after a short hiatus and were quickly reminded why we loved eating (and drinking) here in the first place.

Our table underestimated how much food we were going to get and had a real feast.

The brisket-wrapped scallops are really to die for, the shrimp and grits are super yummy and rich, the pulled pork was even better than I remembered it (I think the sauce is just about as perfect as it will get), and my favourite, the calamari.

We just love coming here and trying the specials/features, as well as the cocktails. Buckstop staff know how to make a good cocktail.

A neighbourhood favourite!

Food is too greasy & oily. My husband and I decided try out their brunch on Sunday morning. We ordered the pulled pork Benedict and pork rib scramble. Decent Portion size, but the food was too greasy. The plate was full with oil.
Dino
Came here in the afternoon one day and found it way over priced for the quality. Wasn't very pleased but, the decor was nice the server was pleasant. Decided to try again and a friend and I did the brunch. Her eggs were so snot running and my food again was pretty stale. The server didn't seem to care to much. I figured all the positive reviews were from friends or something?

Great Place, Great People. We love our new neighbours up Denman Street. My wife and I were there on their opening night - let me tell you, the food was great. I've been there many times since and it's always consistently good. Love the chicken, ribs and calamari are amazing. Fiona really knows what she's doing. Be sure to try something off the cocktail list, it's well thought out and executed.
Big Town
I've been 3 times now and so appreciate that I don't have to drop more cash than I want to just get out and enjoy some food and a drink. If they keep their prices in check they'll win over many regulars.
Solid food, but not really inspirational of 'barbecue'. I think of more juicy, sauce accompanied dishes. But it's still good. Good place to share food too. Drink specials are a great lure, although my Manhattan arrived on the rocks. We fixed that.
Music and mood lighting are great but the brightly lit sign from the sushi place across the street, and the well lit kitchen (without saloon doors or anything to diffuse it) are 2 challenges if you're sitting along the wall, as it's kind of a mood interruptor. An adjustable roll down blind on the front window would do.
Brunch is a solid mix too. Decent coffee.
Not super professional, but attentive enough, well-meaning service.
Some food arrives on a 'board', not a plate, which I detest.
Water is served in mason jars. Doesn't work and cheapens the experience. Oh well.
It definitely will be a regular haunt if they keep it up otherwise.
Thank you for coming to the neighbourhood, Buckstop!

Mouth watering. Came here on a whim and will be back as the go to place when friends are in town or when i'm needing to get the taste of ribs. The staff were -super- friendly and the food/portion size was amazing. (Left with some to take home) We had the deep friend pickles and the smaller of the meat plates to share.
do yourself a favour and check it out. everything was delicious. Thanks guys.

SWEET SPOT!. I've been twice to this awesome addition to the West end. They have great music, decor, super friendly staff and DELICIOUS food! I'm a pescatarian so I had the Wild Salmon, but the other veggie options were delicious too..
The Sticky Toffee pudding was sublime and the wine, and cocktail (the whole list sounds good!!) I had was so exquisite, like desert. I've heard the brunch is incredible too, I can't wait to go back for more!! YUM.

Please NEVER go there... B.... Please NEVER go there...
Bad quality food... Bad service..
They were rude and unkind.
Just avoid this please.!

Best beef back ribs experience ever. I live in the west end, and decided to try out the new place last night.
I went there with my wife and I ordered the beef back ribs, she ordered the glazed pork belly.
the server was always very friendly and attentive.
while we waited for our food I tried out their cocktail "the buckstops here". really good and with a unique flavour.
when the food arrived was the first 'wow' moment. the ribs came in a nice cut on a wood board with beans , fries, coleslaw and their ketchup and bbq sauces that I discovered later it's all made in the house.
the second 'wow'' was when I tasted the ribs. they were nicely done, perfect temperature and consistency. loved the beans as well.
i had a really nice experience at buckstop and I'll be definitely coming back.

Decent Ideas Poorly Executed. Having been raised on great barbecue during trips to the South as a kid, I have some pretty high expectations of barbecue joints, but I was cautiously optimistic about seeing a barbecue place open up in the West End.

We went in on a Saturday night around 8:30, and the place was about a third full. Decor is a bit all over the place; they've spent some time/money on the fake stone work behind the bar, but there's a huge ugly AC unit hanging over the door and costume shop cowboy hats hanging on the wall. Very dimly lit.

We were seated right away and the staff were friendly (but the sheriff's badge and vest - really?).

The drink menu was not well put together - 3 or 4 sheets (some with different fonts and layouts from the others) in plastic sleeves sandwiched between pieces of wood which were not well connected. Seemed like nice ideas poorly executed, which was a running theme.

The drinks list wasn't bad; the spiked iced teas are very nice though, and they do have Phillips on tap, but the list really lacked focus and had way too much on it - bottles of italian beer at a barbecue joint? More focus on scotch than on bourbon? All very confused.

For food we ordered a selection of meat and sides (labelled as serving 2-3 people and $60): sides were coleslaw, baked navy beans, fries, and hush puppies. Coleslaw was very plain, really just shredded cabbage, but fine. Navy beans were served in a mason jar with a tomato based sauce - nothing bad but just filler really. Fries were fine cut and a bit cold. The hush puppies (deep-fried corn meal dumplings) were terrible. Hush puppies ought to be sweet and savoury pillowy balls of warm goodness, but were dense, sandy textured and cumin (?!?!?!) flavoured balls of sadness. They came with a cinnamon mayo which is really better left alone.

Then came the meat - the rest of a barbecue joint can be terrible but the meat, if fantastic, makes the rest moot. Sadly, not the case here.

The platter consisted of beef brisket, beef ribs, pork ribs, pulled pork and glazed chicken.

Now to take a step back, we wondered on arrival where they would smoke the meat - it's a small place and smokers take up some space. Well, it seem most of the smoke comes in liquid form. The sauce tasted of just pure liquid smoke, and you could tell that the brine the meat sat in was heavily saturated. I think they have a small in-kitchen smoker they do some finishing in, but smoke-house barbecue this is not.

The brisket was decent, but not much of a smoke ring. Flavours were pretty bland.

Beef ribs were better, with some crispy bark on the outside. Nothing super, but not bad either. Decent but not great.

Pulled pork was a bit tomatoey for me, but that's personal preference, and is a lot better than most pulled pork available in town, though it's got nothing on Re-Up or Memphis Blues.

Pork ribs hadn't been slow cooked long enough, and didn't fall off the bone. It wasn't quite chewy white meat on a stick, but it wasn't pink ment in your mouth joy either. Seasoning was very light for me, but maybe that's personal preference again.

The chicken was very good. A bit smokey, sweet and nicely glazed. If I had to eat there again this would be my choice.

The food came very quickly, and again the service was pleasant, but the meat and sides were all rather disappointing.

Maybe I should have questioned a place called Buckstop with stag heads everywhere and no deer on the menu - the sign should have a bottle of liquid smoke on it really: If you're going to do barbecue then it should be all about the pig or the cow, rather than a faux hickish pun.

If you're looking for authentic barbecue in Vancouver this isn't the place (again, Re-Up, Memphis Blues are far tastier) but if you are looking for poorly constructed Southern / Western affectations (again, Sheriff's badges, really?) and mediocre food then this is the place for you.

Would have liked to see BBQ chicken as an option too, but nice selection!

Well all I can say is there is 2 nasty complainers in every hundred people and this little place looks like it got both of them and both decided to review...tards. The place is great! the smell of the smoke in the room alone is worth coming back for, the cocktail list is awesome and the food...well, I sat with a large table that tried literally everything and out of all of us I heard only "oh my god" and the happy smacking of sauce covered lips. There was none of the aforementioned "dryness" etc. I flew across the country to try this place...no joke, and I would do it again. Fiona and Dave you guys are doing AWESOME!

So glad you are open. This place has a great atmosphere, great service, a beautiful bar.
The fried Cornish Game Hen is so incredibly good.
The Smoked Gouda grilled cheese mini sandwiches are so dreamy.
The ribs are so meaty.
The drinks are made with so much love.
I had a date there and we both talk about coming back almost every day.

I loved this place. Food and service were great. Pork ribs were fantastic, at the advice of our server. Sicky toffee pudding was to die for. Perfect little date spot with great service.

Place needs a lot of work. Just like the last user I was waiting for this place to be the BBQ spot Vancouver needed. Instead I got same thing. Dry ribs dry brisket dry pulled pork. Very poor excuse for a BBQ joint. You're better off getting a smoker at Home Depot and doing your own bbq. Seems like this place smokes their meat and then just a quick flash on the skillet. Comes out dry and somewhat cold. Definitely will not be coming back. Waitress was rude as well. On a positive note the fries were edible. I won't be spending my bucks here
Hungrymoms
The picture and description are both mouthwatering and I was excited to try them. Unfortunately when I ordered them I received two of the driest, flavourless slabs of over cooked cornbread I had ever eaten. What's worse though, was that the server didn't even come and ask once if I enjoyed it and when she took the plate away with two almost whole pieces, there wasn't even a hint of concern.
Two very big thumbs down on this item.
Picky Diner
Buckstop’s tasting plate turned out to be the most disappointing one of the evening for me overall. What they offered: Autumn Slaw, House Smoked Sausage, and Corn Bread, did not taste good no matter how I combined them or ate them individually. The slaw did not taste fresh and the dressing was rather bland. The corn bread was quite rubbery. The sausage had an odd texture and the spiciness was not pleasant. However they pleased some diners with their whisky drinks that were on special, and some of them actually got brisket instead of sausage. Other than being a local pub, they surely did not strike me as a foodie’s place.

The staff members here are great. I’ve never had a bad time with the service at any BBQ house and Buck Stop is no different. The man at the front had lots of sass to give and it made the experience more inviting and enjoyable. Water service is very prompt and paying the tax and tip on our SocialShopper was a very painless procedure.

...one of the best smoked chicken I've ever had, although a tad dry on some parts; brisket was nice and marbly but a tad bland; pulled pork not bad; pork ribs were slightly dry and way too charred for my liking Buttermilk marinated fried cornish game hen w pommery mustard aioli - 2 J's comment > really good fried chicken, but a tad too salty Cornbread and Honey Butter - 2 Hush Puppies - 2 J's comment > cornbread and hush puppies tad dense, but the honey butter made everything better ;) Menu www.buckstop.ca Labels: bbq, denman, downtown

Another beautiful night in Vancouver, what better way to enjoy it then with some delicious company and barbecue! We and by ‘we’ I mean I, decided on Buckstop – a classic barbecue, and small plates saloon...

Classic barbecue and small plate saloon. With a particularly fussy partner I am always in search of new places that I can take him to eat at. One that he would actually like, and one that I can write about for this blog. One type of cuisine that never fails is barbecue. So when I googled “BBQ Vancouver”, and “Buck Stop” popped up as a suggestion I have never heard of, it was decided. Through the course of our meal I eventually learned that, “Buck Stop” is fairly new to the Denman strip. The newest successor at 833, after a long list of failed restaurants before it. So much is the case that its name is still not listed on the directory with all the others. They have only been open for 3 months, but already its looks like they are doing well for themselves. They are definitely the nicest looking restaurant along this street. The decor has them fitting right in at Gastown. Outside, their sandwich board attracts your attention, as it instructs you to, “Eat Meat Repeat”. A catchy slogan and

Buckstop was a huge disappointment. Their House-made Smoked Sausage was chewy, crumbly and boring – it only tasted spicy. The Autumn Slaw was bland as leaves and seriously lacked acid. The Corn Bread, for some odd reason, was really spicy too. More importantly, it was as hard as a rock.
Eating With Kirby
Their Autumn Slaw on the left was missing salt and some sort of acid to balance the flavours out. The Corn bread in the middle was as hard as a rock, and the housemade smoked sausage on the right was grainy and too spicy.
Food Persuasion
Everything including the chipotle ketchup and chutney was made inhouse. A simple dish with simple flavours but, very fresh. The eggs were not over scrambled and the inhouse made ketchup went amazingly well with the lightly seasoned hash, giving it a nice kick.
