Best bbq ribs in town by a long shot! Everything on this menu is always great quality. First time trying the ribs and they fall off the bone, they are huge and lots of flavour! I want to eat it all over again, in-fact i think i will! Also got the smoked chicken and bbq beans which i also highly recommend!!!!
Stopped here after our flight landed and it was one of the few spots still open after we checked in after 11 on Sunday. The bartender warmed up to my wife and I and recommended a really good drink “the buckstops here” I believe. Good barbecue for a Canadian place, speaking from some Texas natives! Appreciated the hospitality for sure!
Yes. We,re Eating Again.

I obsessed, some would say too much, over the name Buckstop. What did it mean? Where did it come from? Antlers are certainly in evidence here, in the logo and so on ,. so I get the deer thing, but venison is not on the menu and none of the ruminants dropped in for refreshments while we were there. Is it a masculine reference to what a Saloon might have been say 150 years ago? Shame on me for even suggesting such a thing and rest assured, there were mostly couples and even a toddler present! How about, 'the buck stops here' (there is such a drink on the menu)? Nope, that doesn't work. Now, I know what you're thinking...the name sounds cool and there is some cute potential word play. Just get past it and order something to eat!
My partner and I enjoyed sitting at the front window, watching the West End folks drift by and loved the restaurant soundtrack. We listened to Eels, Johnny Cash, The Charlatans (happily not a single Bob Seger song) and munched happily on Deep Fried Pickles! They were hot out of the fryer, crispy and tasty, with a slightly spicy Cajun dipping sauce. Very nice! Next came Corn Bread and Hush Puppies with sweet butter. Both were moist and sweet with a nice coarse cornmeal texture and I began to worry that I would not have room for the next offering! Then it arrived! Smoked chicken, beef ribs, a pulled pork sandwich, fries, coleslaw and beans. This was a Groupon thing so you won't find it exactly on the menu but they do have some nice platter and combination meals available. This is barbecue. It means long slow cooking over low heat with smoke. Do not confuse it with the food you cook on your grill at home! The chicken was, oh so smokey, a taste that stayed with me and on my fingers ( I am not complaining). Despite brining, we did hit the occasional dry spot on the exposed meat. The ribs (there are 4 moist, meaty ribs under the chicken, not so visible in my photo) had a bit of a spicy kick and were very good. The coleslaw was refreshing and vinegary and also one of the stars of a very good pulled pork sandwich. Again with excellent smoke. I am not enough of an expert to tell you what kind of wood they use, just that it is the right kind. I found that the kitchen is a little shy with salt (not normally a bad thing) and both the chicken and the ribs could have used a little hit to make the flavours stand up a bit more. The fries were tasty (and salted) and the beans were firm, cuminy and smokey. This is a small place, friendly staff, pleasantly noisy and for those seeking libations, there is an extensive listing of Bourbon et al. Make a reservation and try some decent barbeque!
I recently heard about this place thanks to Zomato reviews. The menu seemed pretty good so I went with a friend on a Saturday night. The restaurant's vibe is pretty chill; it's fairly lit and there is social seating-so you may be sharing a table with other people if it's a busy night. If you're looking for a quite date night, maybe this isn't the right place.
We ordered the Half Stop Barbecue for the heck of it. MY GOD that was a lot of food. My favourite were the ribs. Compared to other BBQ houses in Vancouver, Backstop offers the best ribs I've had! They were juicy and tender ..I can still taste them! Their sides were delicious as well. The hushpuppies and slaw got my mouth watering. The chicken was seasoned pretty well! The brisket, though, may need some more work..
Unfortunately we were too stuffed to order the Mac n Cheese but I'm definitely going back to give that a try!
Reasonable price for the amount of food given.
In my opinion this is a place for the meltwater who appreciates good barbecue. Plate sizes are generous and they do a good job of capturing good souther flavour in their dishes. The cocktails were carefully crafted and suited the menus well.
Now this place I liked the vibe of. Staff were super friendly and it was small and low lit.
Didn't have much to eat here just some pop corn shrimp and they were spicy but there was a decent amount of them! I had a bourbon cocktail and a shot made by the bar tender. I wish I hadn't been so tired and could have tried more drinks and a pulled pork sandwich.
Menu looked decent. I had a sip of my friends cocktail and I liked it!!!
I need to go here one time at the start of my night.
Buckstop is a classic BBQ and small plates saloon on Denman Street. I bought a Social Shopper deal for their classic American barbecue feast for two people, including fried dill pickles, pulled pork sandwich, smoked chicken leg, St. Louis pork ribs, navy beans, Kennebec fries, hush puppies, cornbread and honey butter. Pretty good deal for only $28.

M and I came on the weekend to finally use it before it expires.
It was pretty good deal with the SocialShopper deal and I would come back on a regular night. The atmosphere is great especially grabbing a few cocktails or beer to go with your meal.

I had won a dinner for two at Buckstop from the 12 Days of Giveaway of Nomss so we headed to the cozy restaurant on Denman on a Friday night. The winning was a Social Shopper voucher for the American BBQ Feast for 2 valued at $59 for the price of $28. The restaurant is very narrow with a bar at the front. Seating is a bit tight but I loved the ambiance with the dim lighting. Service was alright even though we were using a Social Shopper.
Went to Buckstop last week. Gotta say, Love this place! We had a half stop, which is a crazy selection of house smoked/BBQ'd meats. Brisket, chicken, pork and beef ribs. Corn bread n' beans too! Great spot for BBQ. Open late. Service was friendly and fast. And the Cocktail list was more than I expected from a small place like this. They make their own bitters! And tons of flavours! So impressed. Have to go back just to work my way through the cocktail list. Great experience all around. Thanks Buckstop!
We were in town on business and had been told about this place. Awesome amounts of food one the best bar b que places ever. Fiona was an awesome server. Prices were very resonable. We will return one of our Crüe had the tuna great.
I can’t say enough great things about Buckstop! I went in with my boyfriend to celebrate his birthday and we were both very impressed with the food, service and ambience of this little blink-or-you’ll-miss-it BBQ saloon and whiskey bar.
We ordered the Half-Stop Barbecue platter which came with beef back ribs, St.Louis pork ribs, slow-cooked brisket, smoked chicken and pulled pork plus hush puppies, cornbread, coleslaw, navy beans and fries. A lot of food, but everything was delicious. We enjoyed it all with a bottle of Malbec, and some friendly conversation with the staff.
The brunch is always fab, and the music always great! Definitely our favourite local.
This is my favorite bar in town. It's a great antidote to the corporate bar culture found in Vancouver. Delicious barbecue, great drink specials and really friendly staff.
A great time, great food, and really nice house red wine!. This is a really nice little place. My partner and I went for our anniversary on a Saturday night and we sat at the front near the window, I got a glass of the house red (Mason Jar Red, $6) which was actually really good, it went with the meat really nicely and he just got a beer like usual. The staff were super friendly and attentive, choosing a BBQ house for an anniversary wasn't my first idea, but I just wanted somewhere nicer than were we usually go (sushi or pub) and were I could have some nice red wine that went well with the food. We got the Half Stop, all the meat was juicy, not dry and not too greasy...very very tasty!! and for $55 there was soo much food, we had to take left overs home (which is rare for us). I also indulged in a little dessert, a chocolate mousse with a little reindeer cookie which was very good! Well worth it. I had a very nice evening, left with a full belly and a little tipsy!
Amazing gourmet eatery! Venison burger was amazing! They brew their own ginger ale! Also, Caesar comes with a slice of smoke cheese and bacon on a skewer. Stole some of bf's pulled pork and beans! Hush puppies are southern comfort! Butter is made of cinnamon and honey!
Consistently happy. My partner and I have really limited our eating out and really seldom do anymore. That being said, we've been coming to Buckstop since it opened and have had a chance to try pretty much everything on the menu.
I am confident that there is something on here for everyone!
We went this evening after a short hiatus and were quickly reminded why we loved eating (and drinking) here in the first place.
Our table underestimated how much food we were going to get and had a real feast.
The brisket-wrapped scallops are really to die for, the shrimp and grits are super yummy and rich, the pulled pork was even better than I remembered it (I think the sauce is just about as perfect as it will get), and my favourite, the calamari.
We just love coming here and trying the specials/features, as well as the cocktails. Buckstop staff know how to make a good cocktail.
A neighbourhood favourite!
Great Place, Great People. We love our new neighbours up Denman Street. My wife and I were there on their opening night - let me tell you, the food was great. I've been there many times since and it's always consistently good. Love the chicken, ribs and calamari are amazing. Fiona really knows what she's doing. Be sure to try something off the cocktail list, it's well thought out and executed.
Mouth watering. Came here on a whim and will be back as the go to place when friends are in town or when i'm needing to get the taste of ribs. The staff were -super- friendly and the food/portion size was amazing. (Left with some to take home) We had the deep friend pickles and the smaller of the meat plates to share.
do yourself a favour and check it out. everything was delicious. Thanks guys.
SWEET SPOT!. I've been twice to this awesome addition to the West end. They have great music, decor, super friendly staff and DELICIOUS food! I'm a pescatarian so I had the Wild Salmon, but the other veggie options were delicious too..
The Sticky Toffee pudding was sublime and the wine, and cocktail (the whole list sounds good!!) I had was so exquisite, like desert. I've heard the brunch is incredible too, I can't wait to go back for more!! YUM.
Best beef back ribs experience ever. I live in the west end, and decided to try out the new place last night.
I went there with my wife and I ordered the beef back ribs, she ordered the glazed pork belly.
the server was always very friendly and attentive.
while we waited for our food I tried out their cocktail "the buckstops here". really good and with a unique flavour.
when the food arrived was the first 'wow' moment. the ribs came in a nice cut on a wood board with beans , fries, coleslaw and their ketchup and bbq sauces that I discovered later it's all made in the house.
the second 'wow'' was when I tasted the ribs. they were nicely done, perfect temperature and consistency. loved the beans as well.
i had a really nice experience at buckstop and I'll be definitely coming back.
Well all I can say is there is 2 nasty complainers in every hundred people and this little place looks like it got both of them and both decided to review...tards. The place is great! the smell of the smoke in the room alone is worth coming back for, the cocktail list is awesome and the food...well, I sat with a large table that tried literally everything and out of all of us I heard only "oh my god" and the happy smacking of sauce covered lips. There was none of the aforementioned "dryness" etc. I flew across the country to try this place...no joke, and I would do it again. Fiona and Dave you guys are doing AWESOME!
I loved this place. Food and service were great. Pork ribs were fantastic, at the advice of our server. Sicky toffee pudding was to die for. Perfect little date spot with great service.
The staff members here are great. I’ve never had a bad time with the service at any BBQ house and Buck Stop is no different. The man at the front had lots of sass to give and it made the experience more inviting and enjoyable. Water service is very prompt and paying the tax and tip on our SocialShopper was a very painless procedure.
Another beautiful night in Vancouver, what better way to enjoy it then with some delicious company and barbecue! We and by ‘we’ I mean I, decided on Buckstop – a classic barbecue, and small plates saloon...
Classic barbecue and small plate saloon. With a particularly fussy partner I am always in search of new places that I can take him to eat at. One that he would actually like, and one that I can write about for this blog. One type of cuisine that never fails is barbecue. So when I googled “BBQ Vancouver”, and “Buck Stop” popped up as a suggestion I have never heard of, it was decided. Through the course of our meal I eventually learned that, “Buck Stop” is fairly new to the Denman strip. The newest successor at 833, after a long list of failed restaurants before it. So much is the case that its name is still not listed on the directory with all the others. They have only been open for 3 months, but already its looks like they are doing well for themselves. They are definitely the nicest looking restaurant along this street. The decor has them fitting right in at Gastown. Outside, their sandwich board attracts your attention, as it instructs you to, “Eat Meat Repeat”. A catchy slogan and
This place has been a favourite since I discovered them in 2014.
The ambience is dark but cozy and feels homey.
The staff is always a pleasure and you can tell there's always a few regulars around with obvious love and a protective air for the place (**saw it first hand when a few stepped out to look into a possible issue when someone hit the window in passing)
Interesting range of drinks , the red sangria is my favourite and their classic old fashioned really hit the spot too.
Now for the main event : fooood!
Their hush puppies and cornbread is probably the best I've had and I always leave with extras ;)
The halfstop : 70$ , huge serving, took plenty home .2 beef ribs, 5 pork ribs, 2-3 smoked chicken, 3 smoked brisket, ramekin of pulled pork, Comes with fries, coleslaw, sauce and cornbread and hush puppies with cinnamon butter. We swapped the fries for beans (yummy) .
The pork ribs last night were divine and the pulled pork was deliciously smokey . Everything else was good too, though I felt the beef ribs were a little dry but still tasty.
They also have Monday burger specials which is nice . Another special mention is the fried dill pickles! Best way to get the appetite rolling . Slurp slurp !
All in all, I love this place and look forward to introducing new people to buckstop every chance I get !
The food is awesome, has a kind of medieval ambiance.
Would recommend the meat. Pulled pork, ribs, came with a donut type bread, hush puppies, was so good.
Great place for meat eaters. Coleslaw excellent!!! Fries mmmmmm
Definitely my destination when I’m craving ribs.
