What I really liked about Mr. Red was that the food was unusual. The two sticky rice dishes were not quite like anything I’ve had before. The crispy spring rolls were tasty, though a bit bigger and more crude than some other versions I've had. I thought the turmeric fish was pretty lovely, sizzling away in a pan brought to the table and covered in dill. We ordered slightly too much food but it was less than $50 for the three of us for lunch. A solid four stars.

My classic Pho Bo ($11), or what I call the "everything" beef pho came to rescue the hangry me. It was one of those from-hell-to-heaven experiences that don't happen every day. The beef broth was simply divine - super clear and clean tasting, a perfect balance of sweet, savoury, and umami, and again, the Northern Vietnamese notions of green onions and cilantro. The beef and the beef balls tasted very fresh. I almost didn't want to add the basil leaves for keeping the cleanness of the flavour. It's interesting that they didn't give us those tiny saucers for dipping the beef in chilli paste or hoisin sauce, which by the way, was not on the table.  For me, the whole bowl of beef rice noodle soup tasted perfect on its own.

I dropped in for lunch and had a wonderful dinning experience. I had a difficult time choosing, as everything on the menu sounded wonderful. I ended up having a traditional Banh Mi, pork and pate sandwich, which was delicious. But my favourite item was the sticky rice dumpling with pork. The dumpling was so flavourful and, coupled with the pickled garlic, really delicious. The pandan tea too was a nice change from the usual. It was a lovely meal and I look forward to returning to try other items on the varied menu.

When you think of Vietnamese cuisine, two main dishes come to mind: phở and bánh mì. While completely delicious, both of these dishes fall into a bit of a “fast food” category as far as Vietnamese food goes. But what else is there? I was hoping to find out at Mr. Red Cafe in Kitsilano, one of their two locations in Vancouver. They were voted Best Vietnamese 2016 and Best Vietnamese 2017 in Vancouver Magazine, and so they seemed like a good bet.

We visited on a Friday evening and were seated right away by the friendly staff. The inside of the restaurant is very cute!! I absolutely love the tropical “cabana” style, with dried palm leaves as far as the eye can see. The walls are painted red, which makes a lot of sense, given the restaurant's name. The intricate decor totally embodies the Northern Vietnamese vibe, which matches perfectly with their food. We were immediately served a delicious warm tea, although they never returned to refill our cups. I had also wanted to enjoy an avocado smoothie, but was informed that they didn’t have any left.

The menu is quite extensive and includes both phở and bánh mì, of course. Thankfully there is a lot more to choose from as well. We gravitated right away to the Family Set Menu for two people, which sounded exactly like everything that we wanted and included eight different dishes. To our dismay, we were informed that this meal is only offered on Saturday and Sunday. So we were back to the drawing board and began to cobble together our dinner à la carte. Once ordered, every dish arrived to our table very quickly.

From the appetizer section we chose the Nộm Đu Đủ Bò Khô (Green papaya salad mixed with shredded carrots, assorted herbs, beef jerky, crushed peanuts & fried shallots. Served with sweet & sour fish sauce dressing - $9.00), a favourite Southeast Asian dish of ours. I liked this dish because it was somewhat different from its Thai counterpart, albeit a bit less flavourful. The green papaya and carrot tasted fresh but didn’t have a whole lot of flavour, however the zesty dressing counteracted that a bit. I really enjoyed the unexpected leaves of mint, the crunchy peanuts, and the crispy shallots, which all added interesting elements and textures. Best of all was the beef jerky, something that I have not seen on this type of salad before. Salty and savoury, the jerky elevated this salad quite a lot.

We tried to order the Bánh Mì Cay (spicy bread sticks with pate spread & crunchy shallots) because in my opinion, the pate is the best part of a bánh mì. But we were told that they were all out of bread and that they could not make this. At this point I was feeling pretty unimpressed at the amount of items that we were unable to order.

We had the Nem Cua Bể (Deep-fried pork & real crab meat spring rolls. Served in 3 pieces with light fish sauce and fresh herbs - $9.00), which also sounded good. These were very good and better then your typical spring roll. I liked that they truly seemed homemade. The pork and crab were pretty indiscernible, but the rolls were fried to a golden perfection. Each bite was piping hot and delicious thanks to the tart fish sauce.

Finally, for my main course, I tried to order something a bit more traditional. I went to the “Dried Rice Vermicelli with "Nuoc Mam” section of the menu and picked the Bún Chả Hà Nội (Grilled pork belly & pork meat balls in sweet & sour fish sauce. Served with vermicelli noodles & fresh herbs - $13.00). Served in the more traditional way, this bún (rice vermicelli) is more of a do-it-yourself endeavour. It’s up to you to combine the various elements on your plate to create your perfect bites. I enjoyed the flavours and textures of this dish quite a lot. I spent a lot of time dragging my noodles through the vinegary fish sauce and grabbing little bits of everything else, trying to rotate though all of it. The noodles themselves were a bit sticky, but once bathed in the sharp broth they loosened up quite a lot. The pork belly was different and interesting, because it was a lot more like a jerky, which I actually liked! The meat was spicy and toothsome and worked very well with all of the other components. The menu states that there are meat balls in this dish, however I only received one. I also really liked the pickled vegetables that were included, which added a lot of flavour. A decently good dish!

My experience at Mr. Red Cafe was generally good, and I did enjoy the food and the ambiance. However, I was let down by the amount of items on the menu that couldn’t be ordered. I would hope that this isn’t always the case!

Wow this is quite the belated post! Oracle, BW and I went to Mr. Red Cafe in Kitsilano! I’m completely in love with the one on Hastings but I have yet to go to the Kitsilano branch and I’ve been wanted to go here for quite some time because their menu is a little different than the Hastings branch.

FOOD FOR BUDDHA
+4
Whether it's on Hastings Street or on West Broadway, Mr. Red Cafe, a restaurant that has been on Buddha Boy's to-eat list for buddha-knows how long, is not really in our neighborhood nor in an area where we would visit often.  We've driven by its Hastings location numerous times but those visits were either for Yan's Bakery or for Gourmet Warehouse.

But, one day, I dragged BabyE along to its Hastings outlet for lunch just so I could satisfy my husband's wish...

On its FB page, Mr. Red Cafe presented its first ever buffet to commemorate the side-by-side celebration of Family Day and Valentine's Day.  The buffet, held at its West Broadway location, ran all day on February 13th from 11am-9pm and half day on February 14th from 5pm-9pm.  The cost was $28CAD (plus tax) per person and children under five dine free.  Advance purchase of tickets were encouraged, but not strictly enforced.

Yes, this was news from heaven for Buddha Boy...

We decided to visit right at its opening time on February 13th.  We arrived at about 10:45am and we could see, through the window, that the restaurant was trying to set up for the event.  Not wanting to intrude, we attempted to wait in the car for the restaurant to open at 11am.  But, approximately five minutes later, we saw an Asian couple entered the restaurant and sat down at a large table.  Buddha Boy and I, along with BabyE, quickly followed to secure our seats.  We were lucky to be seated at the best spot in the house, right by the starting point of the buffet line.

By 11:15am, the restaurant was full.

After we were seated, we were given a buffet menu.  We overheard that a few of the homey items were not listed on the printout.  (FYI, most of the buffet items can be order from its everyday menu on regular days.)

Though we were seated just before 11am, the buffet did not start until 11:45am.  The kitchen really scrambled to get things ready.  That being said, despite how busy they were trying to start the event, each and every single staff was courteous with a positive attitude.  Not only they constantly apologized for the long wait, tea and water were replenished regularly.  Even Rose, the owner-wife, who was running back and forth between the front and the kitchen, was friendly and approachable.

After all the rush, the owners, Rose and Hong Duong, greeted the room and shared a few words before starting the buffet.  Being a buddhist/taoist myself, I give compliments to Rose.  With a restaurant full of people staring and waiting for the food, Rose still took the time to pay respect to her religion.  I saw her kneeling in front of her religious god at the front entrance just before kicking off the event.

The buffet focused on the owners' hometown flavors of northern Vietnam.  Since we're not experts in Vietnamese cuisine, it's really inappropriate for us to comment on how classic or how authentic these dishes were.  After all, our exposures to Vietnamese food, then and now, were only from local eateries.  Therefore, food wise, we have decided to only post photos of our plates.

Buddha Boy and I really enjoyed the buffet.  Despite the long wait (trust me, it was worth the wait), the food was stunning.  From soups to meats to desserts, we enjoyed every single item on its buffet table.  Flavors were bold with dimensions.  We truly appreciate all the hard work of making everything in-house.

It's not easy to organize a public event, especially with such a limited space.  There were some organizing hiccups and here are some suggestions to the owners:

(Rose and Hong Duong, please do not feel offended as I just wanted to share some points from experience as an event planner.)

(1) Layout
Instead of having the L-shaped buffet table along the front window, have it along the long-side wall.  This will allow efficiency to/from the kitchen and less interruptions to diners when creating the buffet line (as the line can go into the back hallway).

(2) Buffet Time Limit
While the food was delicious and amazing, it was a bit hard to truly enjoy the buffet with only one hour to eat.  The one-hour time limit allowed zero breathing room in-between the plates for diners to appreciate all the hard work and to savor all the delightful elements presented in the dishes.  A common buffet time limit of 1.5hr to 2hr is recommended.

(3)  Seating Times & Ticket Sales
Due to the limited space, instead of first-come-first-served, offering seating times will avoid long waits and rushed services.  For instance, with each 1.5hr time limit, schedule a two-hour seating time.  If the event runs from 11am-9pm, five seating allotments (i.e. 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm and 7pm) can be offered as booking options as a perk to those interested in purchasing tickets in advance (a perk).  This alternative would only work best if advance ticket purchase is strongly enforced at only one location, not two.  This will also create a better flow and efficiency between the front and the kitchen.  Moreover, this will also help with forecasting.

We look forward to Mr. Red Cafe's next buffet event.  Meanwhile, Buddha Boy and I will be returning in the near future to try out its day-to-day menu.

(Thank you Rose and Hong Duong, and all the staff of Mr, Red Cafe, for giving us the opportunity to sample some of your hometown flavors.  We truly appreciate all the hard work.  Good job team!)

We came here around 7:30pm and the place was full. Luckily, we didn't have to wait for too long. I had the crepe and the tumeric fish. The ingredients inside the crepe was quite flavorful and hot. The fish fillet came in a small hot plate, topped with fennel and scallion. It was very flavorful, and the small chilli used with it can give you a surprise kick to the taste.

This place had quite a unique and cozy environment made me feel like I was in Vietnam again for a bit. My gf had placed the wrong order and I had decided to take her dish since it look so appetizing with the bed of vegetables and noodles on a bamboo tray and a claypot of pork stew. The pork was a bit on the dry side, but the pork balls inside were flavourful and moist. My other friends had ordered a number of other things for me to try as well, I believe I had the df rice paper square Spring Rolls, I'm not sure of the name on the menu , I can't seem to find their menu online, it may be under 'Nem' but it was my favorite part of the meal, crispy and crunchy on the outside and packed with meat and some bits of crab. I also tried the turmeric dill fish which was good with the shrimp paste dip. That was about all for my meal, I'd love to come back on my next trip back and try the rest of the other menu.

Enjoyed the pho. Had two appetizers with a gummy rice wrapper which were good! The place was clean with a good ambiance. Biggest downside was the service. Food was slow, we had to ask for refills of tea, and they messed up when splitting the bill.

Not a typical Vietnamese food restaurant! I love their dishes. Every dish was so special in its own way. Will definitely go again and again and again!! The only downside is that it's quite small & crowded. Not kids friendly.

I was so happy when I found out Mr. Red Cafe opened a location in Kits. I will no longer have to make the trek to their location in Grandview. Their Kits location serves the same delicious northern style Vietnamese cuisine as their other location. Their garlic vinegar is really unique and adds alot to all their dishes. I've been recommending this place to alot of people and it's gotta be one of the best Vietnamese restaurants in Vancouver.

One of the few Vietnamese restaurants in Vancouver that are doing something different. I'm very excited to try their Sunday "family dinner".

Rose, the owner, is a very genuine person who is obviously extremely passionate and talented.

Mr. Red Cafe Vietnamese Restaurant opened a new Vancouver West Broadway location. Aesthetically it carries from the original 2234 East Hastings pho restaurant – Red walls and minimal decor. So what’s new at the new Broadway location? Aside from the original menu filled with pho noodles, salad rolls and banh mi, Mr. Red Café now offers other delicacies, entrée dishes and group meals.

Fermented shrimp paste with deep fried tofu and sliced pork (Bun Cha Ha Noi)

Hanoi Style Grilled Pork (Bun Dau Mam Tom)

Mr. Red Café Chef Special (Bun Tron Dac Beit)

Grilled beef wrap (Bun Bo Xao)

Crispy Fried Pancake Banh Xeo 12.50: The egg pancake was very light and crispy. It comes with vermicelli rice noodles and fresh herbs. Great meal if you are not looking for something too heavy. It is also a great post workout meal other than a super tropical berry smoothie bowl.

Hanoi Turmeric Fish with fresh dill (Cha Ca Ha Noi) 16.50: Served in a sizzling piping small hot pot. The fish is flash fried and coated with spices. Finally I can find this outside of Vietnam. There are generous amounts of fish packed in this small bowl. Be careful of wearing odor-absorbing clothes like this – I walked out smelling like Cha Ca all day!

Mr. Red Cafe is another restaurant we frequent a lot (follow me on Snap 👻 and you will know). If you also ask me “what’s your favorite restaurant in Vancouver is?” you will probably also hear me roll this off my list. I love it for its simplicity, comfort level and flavor profiles. I haven’t yet had a dish I didn’t like or wish I didn’t order.

Give it a try and let me know what you think in the comments below!
